  1. Re: The Intercourse, General Banter Thread.

I feel a 'fill in the missing word' competition coming here:

How is it that iv not lost' date=' and won 3, yet my we have only got 10 points !!

Come on you cunning stunts or i may have to do some letter switching !:D[/quote']

Because the rest of you team are ______

EDIT: 10 points to the team giving the correct answer?

  2. Re: Official Liverpool Thread

I dunno what is going on' date=' why would any team want Luke Young?

maybe 5 years ago.. but not now.[/quote']

The more I think about it, the more I come to the same conclusion. If we're contemplating buying him to play in his favoured RB position, we're simply pushing Stephen Kelly further down the pecking order. If we've signed him for LB - Why?? Surely there's a natural LB we can get instead. Unless Johnson is still being coveted by some club behind closed doors, I can't see any benefit at all (other than the homegrown rota argument). Aston villa must be loving it!

  3. Re: SMEL Drafting thread

It means that I have been that I have been dreading & procrastinating figuring out the list of the plethora of the 90-rated players... Ugh! :o

Going on the assumption that the older players are still upper on the autopick list, the next three would be GKs

    Friedel GK (39)

    Schwarzer GK (37)

    Rost GK (37)

As the vast majority are unlikely to be chasing more GKs (and it's unlikely anyone will draft these), this will prove to be a major deterrant for most and will probably ensure people get their shortlists in :P

  4. Re: Official Manchester City Thread

Kinki was absolute class - the easiest way to describe him is he was like Ozil is now for Germany

I'd say he was more like Messi to be honest. His close ball control and dribbling skills were very reminiscent of Messi today. I remember him walking through a few defences with his memerising skills :)

  5. Re: Official Liverpool Thread

Is it true that Liverpool have agreed a £2.5 million fee for Luke Young?

Would seem to be a 'horses for courses' signing if it goes ahead. It ticks all the boxes - homegrown' date=' versatile, EPL experience. Hardly the most adventurous of signings if it goes ahead and I would be a little worried if he's being signed to cover the LB void, but as the saying goes with our current predicament [i']beggars can't be choosers [/i]:o:(

  6. Re: Official Liverpool Thread

According to Sky sports Maxi Rodriguez is on the verge of leaving going back to Spain........

Hodgson obviously dont like the Argies Insua' date=' Mascherano, Maxi

bit disappointed to be honest he could have done a decent job as a squad memeber this season and finding a replacement for next to nothing of simillar abilty is gunna be very very difficult ......so the exodus begins :(

    EDIT: PACHECO AGAIN!!!

The guy is class take note Roy!![/quote']

Would be a dire mistake to let him go if it's true :( . I think he'd be more than a squad player and would have been one of our premier performers to be honest. I sincerely hope it was his own preference and not Roy's decision.

have to laugh cos remy is better than kuyt on his day..

    You worry me...immensely :P

  7. Re: Will the new 25-man squad rules in the EPL prematurely end players' careers?

To be honest' date=' I can see this rule benefiting the lower clubs in the Prem and the Championship clubs. Because, the players who couldn't get in the squad would seek going to another club and would turn out to be a good bargain for the lower clubs. It won't end their careers. If anybody has a passion for the game, they won't retire just because they can't get in a 25 man squad, they'll work hard to show they are worthy of a deal at another club. As for the cancelling of contracts, that wouldn't happen as it would cost clubs too much, and, in the current climate, they won't take the risk.

I can see a lot of loaning going on though because of this rule, but clubs may still be reluctant to do that because they are still on the books.[/quote']

I'm hoping the bargain avenue comes into fruition too, but it won't happen in all cases. Take woodgate or Hargreaves for example. Not sure too many clubs would be prepared to play the premium Tottenham or Man U would likely ask for them, knowing their recent injury record. Neither will clubs be too forward in taking them on loan for the same reasons. The players could then be left in limbo. In their eyes they may feel they are fit, but unable to play football anywhere for a season. Players will in effect be on gardening leave. Some would probably be quite happy for this to be the case. But will there come a time when either the player or the club will want to challenge the status quo? Could we see a new ruling ala Bosman or Webster? It's certainly not beyond the realms of possibility I feel.

My mention of 'prematurely end' was not necessarily suggesting the players would retire, but more the fact that they be forced to take several steps down to get a game, thereby curtailing their ambition at the highest level. and that quite possibly after a season on the sidelines. At the end of the day, only time will tell, but certainly clubs are going to have to be more streetwise in their selections/transfers as this pseudo-squad cap comes into play.

  8. With the new rules now in force forthis season, teams accross the EPl will be finalising their 25-man squad for the season. For many, it will be a straight-forward procedure as they don't really have the means to maintain large squads. But for some of the big boys, there are some major decisions to be made. The main clubs affected would seemingly be Man U, tottenham and Man C this time round, but this number may grow with time and the continued trend of buying overseas players accross the league.

Sir Alex is facing up to the dilemma of whether to include Hargreaves and Anderson in his 25-man squad. With their injury problems, it appears he may well overlook at least one of these players. Tottenham face a similar dilemma with Woodgate. can they afford to risk him being part of their 25-man squad and leae out a player who can guarantee a better fitness level? The issue with Man C is slightly different in that they simply have too many players to go into the 25-man squad and are stil looking for more.

So what will happen to the likes of Hargreaves, Anderson, Woodgate, Santa Cruz, possibly Steven Ireland etc if the clubs choose not to include them in their 25-man squads for the season. Will there be cheap bargains on offer for other sides? Will the sides attempt to loan them out? Could this be the prelude to a new form of cancelling of contracts? Will players with injury problems be thrown onto the scrap-heap by clubs all round? How will the PFA respond to this and will they attemptto have it overturned if too many of the players are being left in limbo? Certainly interesting times ahead.

  9. Re: About soccermanager.com rules

Yes it's fine to have more than one account, so long as you don't try to take over two teams in the same gameworld. There are some members with over 30 accounts.

Morale can be increased by winning games and playing the player in question. A new contract can also give a morale boost :)

  10. Re: Official Cricket Thread

Well Watson get's late reverse swing and over here he will get a couple of key wickets. I agree with you on Smith. As for Johnson he can't seem to bowl with the Duke ball. The extra laquer on ball makes it different to ontrol obviously but he does have a knack of getting wickets even when bowling poor. North has been getting wickets in state cricket for a while and he did get a few last summer. He won't always get 6 fors but he will chip in. I love Bollinger though! Such a character! :D

Difficult not to love him. He does exactly have the build of a modern day athletic cricketer, but he always gives his all :). Not sure if you saw the comedy moment when he tried to stop a ball on his follow through and stumbled forward about 10 yards before falling over. Classic comedy which will turn up on 'what happned next?' quiz shows for years to come :D

  11. Re: Official Cricket Thread

For us our bowling is brilliant. We have good variety. Pace with Johnson. Bounce with Bollinger. Swing with Hilfenhaus. Reverse swing with Watson. Wrist & leg spin with Smith. Finger & off spin with North.

I heard that mentioned a few times in the commentary, but having seen it first hand I'm not sure it's that good. Hilfenhaus was consistently good and the stand-out bowler on the tour. Watson had a good series, but the Pakistani's attitude aganst him (treating him like a part-timer) and the conditions had a lot to do with that. North was a big surprise, but will he be able to repeat the performance? Not sure. Bollinger is a real trier and will get wickets wherever. Not convinced about Smith at all and yet to see many deliveries spin or much variety from him - still young so I would like him to experiment and add some variety, something he'll need to become top class (it's clear Ponting had no confidence in him from the little he used him at crucial times). And Johnson was back to his form in england last year. Spraying it all over the place and 3 wickets for around 220 odd (overthe two matches) against a young inexperienced batting side from a frontline bowler is not good enough.

Certainly not too worried at facing this attack on their showing in England this summer. But I guess time will tell :)

  12. Re: SMEL Drafting thread

Got to say, it's pretty disappointing to hear that the trade is refused. Even more disappointing to think that the three people in charge of this project did not feel they could be straight up with us and tell us early enough that the trade was going to be refused (me and Akash would have been able to take it and would have moved on I'm sure). But it's absolutely disgusting to now have the knowledge that others person(s) knew the trade was going to be vetoed before we did. That's pretty low lads to be honest.

  13. Re: Official Liverpool Thread

It's amazing how Huntelaar's career has gone so badly wrong. He has to move and move quickly and unless he is in line for regular first team football for Milan, it would be both in the interests of him and the player himself to secure a loan I would have thought. Not sure it's going to materialise at Liverpool however...

on the subject of Huntelaar, just came accross this thread, where people are calling for him to be rated, 93 or 94, saying he'll be better than Van nistelrooy in his prime, claiming he is better than Torres, would easily score 20+ in the premiership and all sorts. If interested read from about page 11 on wards. Funny how football and opinions can change so quickly. Looks like SM got it right on this one :) :

  14. Re: Official Cricket Thread

Congratulations to Muttiah Muralitharan on taking 800 test wickets. A truly brilliant spin bowler' date=' better than Warne, and he deserves this achievement :) .[/quote']

Was looking like being a big anti-climax at one stage when Malinga was taking all the wickets at the other end. But fittingly he took the last wicket of the innings to get his 800th test wicket. Remarkable record from a remarkable bowler. A record that will stand forever I reckon :)

  15. Re: Official Cricket Thread

I admit they're not the most experianced but if they were to get to at least 300-350 I can't see how austrailia have a chance in hell. Ofcourse Pakistan could be all out by close of play but I can't see it personally' date=' Ponting and the whole team have looked pretty miserable so far with no one player showing much will to fight. I can just tell Warny would love to get back out there ! :P[/quote']

Trust me mate, even that may not be enough. Check this test out earlier this year in Australia. Australia bowled out for 127, Pakistan were 109-0 at one stage in reply - ended up with 333. Australia made nearly 400 second innings and Pakistan couldn't get the 176 needed for vistory in the 2nd innings:

    http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/406200.html

EDIT: One thing is for sure though. This Aussie batting line-up is looking less and less fearsome by the minute :)

  16. Re: Official Cricket Thread

All out for 88 ! :D' date=' really amazing start for Pakistan. Just hope they can push on now and get a big score. ;)[/quote']

Amazing decision by Ponting to bat first with the cloud cover and the Pakistani batsmen weakness against a swinging ball.

Pakistan 64/0 at tea just 24 runs behind with all wickets still intact. Who'd have predicted that? Still, if there's one team that can lose it from here in world cricket, it's Pakistan.

  17. Re: Official Chelsea FC Thread

i knew the 25m offer would be rejected.. neymar is on the same boat as ganso both of them will only go for 40m each...

lyon bidded 20m for ganso and santos came out and said no lower than 40m.

By my reckoning that would make it the 5th most expensive transfer of all time. Do you realy think the pair will be more expensive than David villa, more expensive than Luis Figo (when he was in his prime), more than Buffon, Crespo, Vieri when they were at their best. Can't see it personally and I would have to question the sanity of any team willing to pay that much regardless of how good they are perceived to be.
