Soon after, Spain international Javi Martinez forced a brilliant reflex save from Tim Krul. A copy of the opening goal, good work by Jonas Gutierrez paid off as Papiss Cisse finished it off with a well placed, scuffed shot. Jose Mourinho's Man City came into the encounter needing a win after a disappointing display against Chelsea on Wednesday night in front of the City faithful. Things started brightly for the home side, with Carlos Tevez emphatically beating Sunderland keeper Samir Handanovic to open the scoring. Sunderland then had a good spell, forcing two saves from Manuel Neuer, the first being a shot from distance by Riccardo Montolivo and the second being a drive by Manchester United's Brazilian loanee Alex Sandro. Luis Suarez saw his shot tipped onto the post by Sunderland's Handanovic after great work by Bastian Schweinstiger. A minute before the interval, Luis Suarez chested the ball down to Luka Modric who finely scored his second goal of the season. Sunderland began the second half the better team, with Alex Sandro and Stephane Sessegnon combining for the Benin international to force a save out of Manuel Neuer. Soon after that, Manchester City took total control of the match, bossing ball possession and creating chances to add to their two goal tally.
