Re: CD Review Thread
A little not so well known gem from my collection
Envy - Insomniac Doze (2006)
Envy are something of a unique band. Initially starting as an outright screamo act (thats real screamo not the screamy "emo" stuff in the mainsteam) they slowly began incorparting post rock elements into their sound while still keeping their screamo sound. This may be non-sensical on paper but to the ears it makes for something beautiful and on this 2006 album, which to me is their magnus opus it's so clear. The album opens with my personal favourite song of the band, Further Ahead of Warp which opens with a cresendo of guitar feedback which lasts for over a minute and then the vocals of Tetsuya Fukagawa kick in with an almost soft talking voice which reeks of sheer emotion and frailty. This soon changes as he changes to his screams which are harsh and throaty but yet so beautiful and again like his cleans reek of pure emotion. This is just the first track. The other tracks on the album show the very same things and each does somewhat follow post rock's trademark of soft loud dynmaics but despite this each track has a character of its own showing this band to be above and beyond genericism. From an instrumental perspective the guitars display clear emotion and are used perfectly to convey many emotions just like the vocals do. Sometimes quiet as a whisper and hypnotic and at times loud to a level where the hairs on the back of ones neck can only stand up. Part beautful, part ugly but 100% heartwarming and full of emotion, duality at it's very best.
For Fans Of: Mogwai, City Of Catepillar
Recomended Track: Further Ahead of Warp
Not the best I know but wanted to do some justice for this underground gem.
