    5. Standard Luik
This team is not good one week, then good to fairly strong the next week. Being a regular is a big problem with this team. Standard has an adjustment in terms of playing this year, which means it takes some serious time to participate in the 4 best teams currently. Standard Liège is another team where the offense is not running 100%. Attacking it is still a bit too short to fight for a top 3 place. Standard Liège is in midfield and defensive still pretty good. Arnaud Bodart, Samuel Bastien and Selim Amallah are 3 players who prove to possess the necessary potential to break through at the highest level. Nicolas Gavory, Kostas Laifis and Gjoko Cimirot are the players with experience that are important in the team with their footballing qualities. Maxime Lestienne is a player who is back at the highest level in Belgium and is certainly not doing badly. Zinho Vanheusden is also a player with a nice amount of potential, but does not have his best season this year.

    6. KRC Genk
This team is now known throughout Europe because of its youth academy and their excellent scouting. Leandro Trossard, Ruslan Malinovskiy, Alejandro Pozuelo, Joseph Aidoo, Sander Berge and Mbwana Samatta all left KRC Genk in one year. A large number of quality took the step forward. Finding a follow-up in a short period of 1 year was definitely not easy. Carlos Cuesta, Ianis Hagi, Paul Onuachu and Patrik Hrosovsky were seen as substitutes, but not all were successful.

KRC Genk knows the typical story that people cannot rely on talent from abroad every year. KRC Genk became champion last season, which is fairly unique in their team career, but that also has its consequences. Earlier this season they looked at the known players in terms of talent in their country. That brought nice players, but no more than that. The succession of a new trainer, on the other hand, was more a style break with the vision of the team. It chose a coach that was rather defensive. A few wrong choices and a little too much and wanting to go too fast, KRC Genk currently brings it into a normal level nowadays.

The players who make an impression this season are again Joakim Mæhle and Junya Ito. Paul Onuachu is growing in his role and is becoming increasingly important. The full selection could be called too small for injuries. It's important not top much will happen.

    7. KV Mechelen
The team that has just been promoted from the 2nd division of Belgium is one of the revelations. KV Mechelen is mainly collective and mentally strong this season. Joachim Van Damme is the player par excellence of this mentally and collectively strong team. KV Mechelen does not have too many individual revelations within the team. If there are still players to be named, it seems to me deserved to mention Thibault Peyre and Nikola Storm. Gradually the talents Issa Kabore - from Burkina Faso - and Aster Vranckx are getting more and more chances.

    8. Zulte Waregem
A team that has been in the Belgian subtop for years. This year is no different. Zulte Waregem has taken a financial step forward in the last 2 years, so that they can aim players from a higher level. Cyle Larin and Saïdo Berahino are examples of this. This team has also been supplemented by the 38-year-old Davy De Fauw and the 39-year-old Olivier Deschacht who still brings a lot and certainly with their experience. This was added once again with their own youth Ewoud Pletinckx and the Ghanaian rental player - from RedBull Salzburg - Gideon Mensah. Abdoulaye Sissako is the next French talent that Zulte Waregem can launch after Soualiho Meîté and Abdou Diallo.

Due to the many injuries and not being able to continue their good level, Zulte Waregem is currently in 8th place in Belgium. The arrival of Jelle Vossen - another experienced Belgian - should improve the productivity problem of the attackers. Cyle Larin is currently experiencing a dip, but after a season of inactivity at Besiktas, immediately moving to almost all matches is a big step.

    9. RSC Anderlecht
A Belgian top team that has had mismanagement for years has not had an easy time this season either. Small steps have been taken, but there is still no stability and the right structure to get back to the top in Belgium.

RSC Anderlecht has the youth center 'Neerpede' that is quite well known throughout Europe. Where players like Vincent Kompany and Romelu Lukaku were made as great examples. This year RSCA has one of its youngest squads ever with young players such as Marco Kana, Killian Sardella, Sieben Dewaele, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Francis Amuzu, Yari Verschaeren, Jeremy Doku and Antoine Colassin.

Other youngsters such as Rik Vercauteren, Anouar Ait El Hadj and Lucas Lissens are making the move to the A-team. The big problem is that there are mainly financial problems that make them creative in strengthening the team. The team is not sufficiently committed to the game and the focus in and out every week remains a problem. Kemar Roofe and Nacer Chadli are 2 players with experience that bring added value. Hendrik Van Crombrugge saved his team already a lot of times.

    Predictions
The battle for the Play-Off 1 this year is between Standard De Liège, KRC Genk, KV Mechelen, Zulte Waregem and RSC Anderlecht. Fairly unexpected from KV Mechelen.

Standard De Liège - despite some limitations with the attackers - seems almost certain of Play-Off 1 thanks to their victory last weekend against KRC Genk. KRC Genk is still irregular, but the team has a strong right flank with Mæhle and Ito. If that catches on, KRC Genk certainly has a chance. After a dip, KV Mechelen has found new breath and will certainly make it exciting until the last match day. Zulte Waregem has a too big dip and RSC Anderlecht is far too irregular and mentally not strong enough to participate in this fight.

Our prediction is therefore that it only goes between KV Mechelen and KRC Genk. Last match day KRC Genk vs KV Mechelen will be very interesting.

    Tomorrow: No. 4 -> No. 1

Every window since his move to China there has been plenty of smoke. Some of it must have been fire even though he wasn't allowed to leave until now. Things did get heated between Carrasco and his club from time to time. Plus you have the Dalian Wanda links with Atleti and agents looking to grab even more cash.

1000dB got a reaction from thorgan lesar in Belgian football / Talents Hunter.. by Thorgan Lesar
Standard failed to grab the 10 points needed to advance to the KOs last matchday and also this matchday (despite having a 2 goal lead to defend). It was a hard group and yet they came close again. The draw(s) haven't been kind to Belgian clubs. In future a bit more luck, like all those soft draws that Holland has been getting, wouldn't go amiss.
Antwerp losing their head in the qualis has proven to be quite damaging at the end of the group stage. AZ took 8 points home (11.5 including the games before their win over Antwerp) and has given Holland's coefficient a 1.6 lead over Belgium's this season. Had Antwerp kept their cool instead, Belgium could have very well regained the ground lost in the two previous seasons (0.3 in 2018 and 0.8 in 2019 = 1.1).
Holland could overtake Belgium in the rankings sooner rather than later. Better start getting results. Let's see how Gent and Brugge fare next.

Part 1: Which players are certain of their place at EUROs 2020 ?

    Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid CF)
    Simon Mignolet (Club Brugge KV)
    Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham Hotspurs)
    Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham Hotspurs)
    Thomas Vermaelen (Vissel Kobe)
    Dedryck Boyata (Hertha Berlijn)
    Axel Witsel (Borussia Dortmund)
    Youri Tielemans (Leicester City)
    Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)
    Eden Hazard (Real Madrid CF)
    Thomas Meunier (PSG)
    Nacer Chadli (RSC Anderlecht)
    Timothy Castagne (Atalanta Bergamo)
    Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Dortmund)
    Dries Mertens (SSC Napoli)
    Romelu Lukaku (Internazionale)
    Michy Batshuayi (Chelsea FC)

If nothing happens these players are going to the EUROs 2020. In the next days we're looking closer to Thomas Meunier and Michy Batshuayi and their situations. We're also looking to the last 6 players and all these candidates.

Part 2: Michy Batshuayi and Thomas Meunier
Thomas Meunier, he's injured but when fit he isn't always playing. In my opinion Meunier is the best right back PSG has. I don't think there are problems in progress and he will go the EUROs fully fit.

Michy Batshuayi, a difficult situation. He is back-up in Chelsea while Tammy Abraham is first choice. I honestly think Batshuayi isn't a player for the Premier League. In the winter he needs a move (again...) to Ligue 1 or Bundesliga. If he stays in Chelsea his place at EUROs 2020 is in danger.

Part 3: Last 6 positions to complete
In total 18 players who has a chance to complete this 6 last places in our Belgian squad.

Hendrik Van Crombrugge, Matz Sels and Koen Casteels
A third goalkeeper is traditional. Those 3 goalkeepers has the chance to be in our squad. Van Crombrugge is doing very well in RSC Anderlecht, Sels is someone we can relate on. Koen Casteels is injured, but is also talented.

At this moment I chose Matz Sels, but if Casteels plays on his old level again he's one of the better goalkeepers in Germany. It's a battle between those two.

Jason Denayer, Christian Kabasele, Björn Engels, Zinho Vanheusden

Christian Kabasele is playing again, but he isn't playing on his best level yet. Engels is doing well at Aston Villa, but I miss some leadership in his defence. Vanheusden needs to find his old level back, but is growing. We'll see where he stands in a couple of months. At the moment Jason Denayer is my first choice. He is more integrated in the group then the others and still important for Olympique Lyon.

Leander Dendoncker, Dennis Praet, Orel Mangala, Hans Vanaken

Leander Dendoncker isn't doing much at Wolverhampton. He's playing because he does the dirty work and Neves and others can play on their level. He's the only '6' after Axel Witsel, so he's going normally to EUROs 2020. Hans Vanaken began impressive this season, but isn't on his best level at the moment. When he played for Belgium he didn't impress me while Dennis Praet did a better job in his games with Belgium. That's why I chose Dennis Praet. Orel Mangala is playing really well for Stuttgart, but to make a chance he needs a move to a better team.

Yari Verschaeren, Yannick Carrasco, Léandro Trossard, Dodi Lukebakio

At the moment those 4 players are not on their best level. It's looking who fits better and is more interesting. Léandro Trossard needs to be fit and play some weeks/months. Dodi Lukebakio isn't showing at Hertha Berlin his level from previous season. Yari Verschaeren has it difficult in the year of confirmation and Yannick Carrasco needs to leave China. I chose at the moment Yannick Carrasco because he can play as a wingback at both sides and can play after Lukaku. One condition for his place is a transfer in the winter. If not, Léandro Trossard is the first player as a possibility.

Christian Benteke, Laurent Depoitre, Divock Origi

Laurent Depoitre is playing a lot again. That's good. He's good as a target man. Divock Origi has a lot of movement while Christian Benteke is better with his head and can make war at the 16 of our opponent. 2 problems:

    Problem 1- Divock Origi.
Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané are from another level what leads to little chances for Divock Origi at Liverpool. It's a difficult one because he will play if one from those 3 isn't fit or injured.

    Problem 2- Christian Benteke
He isn't playing much for Crystal Palace. He needs to find a new team on short term of he wants to go the EUROs.

    Last 6 choices:
    Matz Sels
    Jason Denayer
    Leander Dendoncker
    Dennis Praet
    Yannick Carrasco
    Christian Benteke

Flawless in qualifying is another first achieved by this generation. It doesn't hurt to keep winning games to instill a winning mentality. Mentally the team does look stonger, since the World Cup campaign, and team spirit has been superb as usual. Belgium on top of the overall ranking. I'm quite proud of our EURO 2020 campaign so far. And, besides finishing the year as the highest ranked team in the world again (+ picking up yet another FIFA Team of the Year award), Belgium is Elo's No.1 for the first time as well. Our Elo rating (+ our FIFA ranking) isn't simply about vanity, it does show how well the team has been performing compared to others.
Belgium is a well-oiled machine. The away game against Russia was the most recent statement of what to expect from us this summer. The Russians have been playing well and gave it their best against us (expecting them to be more cautious next time we meet). Belgium possess too many weapons for a team like Russia to handle. Yet you have to beat better teams to go all the way. A shame the NL was a let-down. Didn't get to play against other favourites while we could do with a few more competitive games against top sides. TBF the World Cup games against Brazil, France and England weren't that long ago and there isn't much opportunity to play against the very best in a competitive setting, let alone with the added pressure of a major tournament.
Martinez promised to bring Vanheusden (got injured and was needed in the U21s; apropos only days ago they won against Germany's U21s). Regardless, I had hoped Martinez would make good on his promise and start bedding him in. Probably my biggest qualm because rejuvenating the defence is a priority for me. Can't really complain though as Boyata is doing very well and he has grown on me. Thorgan and Tielemans are coming along nicely as well. Januzaj OTOH not so much and even though Vanaken hasn't had many chances he has yet to convince me (he's not 18yo, in fact he'll turn 28 this summer). Hey-ho they're on the fringes after all while the big guns have shown you can count on them (plus Castagne, Carrasco, Vermaelen, Denayer, Dendoncker, Tielemans, etc. can provide adequate cover). Lastly, a shame about Benteke (was hoping he'd finally find his old form at club level this season), seeing a big target man still is quite effective in NT tournaments. Guess that's why Martinez keeps calling him up.

PS I hear this Friday we'll know if we play two games in Russia or Denmark (when the play-off draw is held). I prefer Saint-Petersburg (I like the stadium more and recently we've played there a few times). Then, on the 30th, the match schedule will be determined and regarding who'll be our group's pot 4 team it's a coin flip between Wales and Finland (I'd rather have Wales,  they're better than Finland but based on recent memory it's better to face them in the group than in the next round(s) and there's somewhat of a score to settle from the previous Euros). If we get Wales then Finland goes into Italy's group and vice versa.

None of the big teams and not a chance that we'll be joined by League D's play-off winner. FML.
    EURO 2020 Group B:
    Belgium
    Russia
    Denmark
    Finland
UEFA separate Russia and Kosovo in bid to keep the peace => meaning the League D play-off winner cannot be drawn into Belgium's group. The other play-off paths will most likely contain hosts linked to other groups. Currently Finland and Hungary are in pot 4 but as Hungary are hosting as well Belgium's group for EURO 2020 is already complete (*ATM Czech Rep., Wales or Slovakia can still end up in pot 4 instead of Hungary).
Both Russia and Denmark play their games against Belgium at home and a draw will decide if Belgium plays two group games in Russia or Denmark. The Finnish will play close to home at either venue and they're a fairytale in the making, a new Iceland.
Facing Russia again (it will probably be a cagey affair unless the Russians need a win to advance), Denmark are quite decent, very much underrated (yet against this red-hot Belgium...) and Finland shamelessly parking the bus ... not what I wished for, not at all. Luckily Belgium have become very adept at unlocking ultra-defensive teams.

How the final EURO 2020 draw looks now (of course November's results might cause a few changes):

    Group A
    Italy
    Poland/Turkey/Croatia/France
    Czech Rep./Portugal/Switzerland/Austria/Slovakia
    Finland/Sweden

    Group B
    Belgium
    Denmark
    Russia
    Finland/Sweden

    Group C
    Netherlands
    Poland/Turkey/Croatia/France
    Czech Rep./Portugal/Switzerland/Austria/Slovakia
    League A or League D play-off winner

    Group D
    England
    Poland/Turkey/Croatia/France
    Czech Rep./Portugal/Switzerland/Austria/Slovakia
    League C play-off winner

    Group E
    Spain
    Poland/Turkey/Croatia/France
    Czech Rep./Portugal/Switzerland/Austria/Slovakia
    League B play-off winner

    Group F
    Ukraine
    Germany
    Czech Rep./Portugal/Switzerland/Austria/Slovakia
    League A or League D play-off winner

Belgium would automatically go to group B as top seeds. Russia and Denmark are both pot 2 teams but they have been paired and must go into this group. Sweden could be the pot 4 team. Probably the strongest team you can get from that pot, especially in this group as they'll be playing close to home. Both Russia and Denmark play their games against Belgium at home and a draw will decide if Belgium plays two group games in Russia or Denmark. Better to win this group because the runners-up have to travel excessively to go on a deep run (quarters in Baku with not much rest before the semis in London).
I'd rather avoid playing Russia again at the EUROs. Not unlikely Russia would have to become group winners in the qualis for that to be the case. Belgium being drawn into another group, even one that contains one of the top favourites, has the added benefit you wouldn't have to face that team again unless you both reach the final for example.
My desired group would be Belgium + two of France, Holland, Spain, Germany, England, Portugal, Croatia, ... (not Italy because it's the worst group to be drawn into) + the League D play-off winner. With a League D team in the group failing to advance to the KO stage should be impossible. Great games, already in the group stage, and better chances at a deep run.

I'd love a flawless record in the qualis but most importantly Belgium have qualified for the EUROs. Like the Russia 2018 qualis Belgium is again the first and currently only side to reach the final event.
Loooong trip to Nur-Sultan now (used to be called Astana). With qualification already secured focus could very well be lost, as usual. Crappy plastic pitch as well. Kazakhstan can't qualify directly any longer but at home they'll try to get a result though.
@thorgan lesar a pity about not scoring that 10th goal but hey-ho they once more equalled the record. Plus Lukaku became the first player to surpass the 50-goal mark and we witnessed Verschaeren's first for Belgium.
