  1. Re: EC2933 Reporting Thread MIDDLESBROUGH NO MATCH FOR VILLANS June 19 , 2011 With six goals to his name, Luis Fabiano is the club's top scorer. Aston Villa and Middlesbrough came face to face with each other last night in what proved to be a goals galore for the audience. The Villans won the match hands down with a crushing 7-1 win over Middlesbrough. This is the biggest league win Aston Villa have enjoyed at Villa Park. The victory was secured in the first 25 minutes of the match. The scoreline read 6-1 in favour of Aston Villa due to some sloppy defending by the back three of Walter Samuel, Alex and Marc Planus. The red-hot Luis Fabiano scored a goal to bring his tally to five goals in four games, while Gonzalo Higuain continues to regain his form by scoring his second and third goals of the season after a five-week layoff due to a torn hamstring. After last night's results, Aston Villa is well-positioned to mount a challenge to break into the top 4 after two mediocre seasons where they finished 13th and 16th in the league. "Many people have said that they were surprised at how the match ended in our favour and with such a devastating scoreline, however I always knew that with the quality we have in our team, the match was ours to lose" - PhilipM, manager "The lads did pretty well today...I feel pretty bad for Glen(Johnson) though, hopefully he does not lose his spot in the (national)team to Micah(Richards). Despite recent performances, he's still a quality fullback and I hope that the manager sees that.." - Gareth Barry, captain
  2. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread VILLANS TAKE PORTSMOUTH APART WITH 6-0 MAULING AT VILLA PARK June 19 , 2011 With six goals to his name, Luis Fabiano is the current joint top scorer alongside Sunderland's Alvaro Negredo Aston Villa have shot up to the top of the league table following their 6-0 thrashing of Portsmouth. A brace from Luis Fabiano as well as goals from Ashley Young, Gareth Barry, Obi Mikel and James Milner secured the Villan's fifth league victory of the season. After finishing 16th the previous season, nobody would have expected Aston Villa to be leading the Premier League after the first six games of the current season. The Villans have been the most prolific team in terms of scoring, averaging at least three goals per game, totaling 23 goals in six matches. "I'm just really glad that we are winning. So long as the fans continue to cheer for us, I promise that we'll try our hardest to win all our games." - Marcelo, defender "Higuain's a real team player. He not only score goals, he creates them as well. Half of the goals that I have scored were created by him.." - Luis Fabiano, striker "It's really great to see the lads scoring goals for fun this season. We already have eleven different guys who have scored at least a goal ! This shows that we're not reliant on any individual to win games for us. Hopefully, we can continue winning and improve on our league position from last year" - PhilipM, manager
  3. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread MARCELO BECOMES A VILLAN MAY 01 , 2011 Marcelo celebrating his last match as a Real Madrid player Highly sought-after fullback Marcelo of Real Madrid has completed his transfer from La Liga to the EPL. Marcelo will be officially joining Aston Villa on a three -year deal after he completes his medical today. The deal values Marcelo at over $20m and sees veteran defender Richard Dunne and the underperforming Joao Pereira join Real Madrid. This has been a great week for Aston Villa. First, they managed to beat two other teams to capture Marcelo’s signature. Second, the 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge was Aston Villa’s first win in five matches and only their fourth away victory this season. “I’m really glad to be able to move to England to play football. Now that I’m at Aston Villa, I hope to win titles with the team.” – Marcelo, defender “It’s great to see Marcelo at Aston Villa with me, Philippe and Fabiano as well as several other reserve players like Marcelo Guedes and Leandro Damiao. Hopefully Mano(Brazil head coach) sees us doing well for the team and picks us to join the Selecao..” – David Luiz, defender "I'm really proud that Marcelo has decided to start his career in the EPL with us instead of with other teams in England. With his quality, he could have slot right into any of the top teams in England." - PhilipM, manager
  4. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread AN EMPHATIC VICTORY OVER PRESTON HALTS FOUR-MATCH WINLESS STREAK FOR THE VILLANS FEBRUARY 27 , 2011 After a four-match winless run which saw Aston Villa being knocked out of the English Cup by Sunderland, supporters began calling for the sacking of PhilipM. As more pressure was heaped on PhilipM by the board of directors, it was pretty obvious that PhilipM needed to secure victory over Preston North End if he were to extend his stay in England. The team delivered the goods last night, crushing Preston North End 4-1. However, the victory was marred by James Milner's foot injury after he was tackled by Alex Rodrigo. Impressive wing play by Milos Krasic and Santi Carzola led to three of goals scored with Cazorla netting a brace, his third and fourth goals of the season. Cazorla scored twice against Preston North End last night "It is a relief to finally win a match after two weeks of not doing so. Hopefully, we can continue winning for the rest of the season." - Milos Krasic, midfielder "This is prove to the fans that we have the right manager and personnel needed to win the league" - David Luiz, defender "I know that the team has not been performing up to the standards expected by our supporters but I assure our fans that we can only do better." - PhilipM, manager
  5. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread ASTON VILLA A ONE-MAN TEAM ? FEBRUARY 12 , 2011 Aston Villa have just won their most recent match, a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough at the Riverside stadium. However, the win could not have been achieved without a stellar performance from Argentine superstar Gonzalo Higuain. Despite failing to put his name onto the score sheet, Higuain was a constant menace for the centre back pairing of Johann Djourou and Phil Jagielka throughout the entire 90 minutes. Higuain was the Man of the Match in the fixture against Middlesbrough Collecting Man of Match awards is fast becoming a routine for Higuain, who has received four such awards in his nine league outings. In total, Higuain has played nine times this season(out of a possible of twelve), scoring four times, assisting once and receiving four Man of Match awards. The club's record when Higuain played is as follows: 4W 3D 2L(GF 16 GA 13) When Higuain was absent, the club's record is as follows: 2D 1L( GF 3 GA 5) It is pretty obvious that Higuain is Aston Villa's talisman as they have failed to win a match when he was failed to play. Also, Higuain has been the match winner on many occasions this season, once again proving the importance of his role in the team. If Aston Villa were to improve on their league ranking, they have to ensure that Higuain stays healthy for the rest of the season. However, time is not on their side as several clubs have been chasing after Higuain's signature since the start of the season. Even though Higuain has signed a contract extension recently, nothing is certain in these times where managers and players alike are in a merry-go-round mood, filling into each others job as though playing musical chairs. Only time will tell whether Higuain's loyalty is true but what Aston Villa can do in the meantime is to ensure that the entire team performs at the level Higuain is at.
  6. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread VILLANS PLAGUED BY INCONSISTENCY AND INJURIES YET AGAIN FEBRUARY 8 , 2011 Obi Mikel's body language sums up Aston Villa's disappointing start to the season It is close to the halfway point of the season and Aston Villa are stuck in the bottom half of the league table. The Villians have several key players unavailable throughout the first 14 matches. First, Gonzalo Higuain missed 3 games with a twisted ankle after the season-opening draw with Everton. Then, Gareth Barry suffered a similar injury and was unavailable for three games as well. Lucio and Obi Mikel have also been handed a three match suspension each for receiving red cards. " It just feels like deja vu, last season, we were very poor in the first half of the season. We failed to produce those match-winning goals, dropping those precious points early in the season. It's the same this time round, we weren't able to cope well when Higuain wasn't around. Then we lose Barry to injury and Lucio and Jon to suspension. On the whole, i'm still quite pleased with our performances. Especially the never-say-die spirit that we displayed in our 4-3 defeat to Reading. It was a real pity that we lost to them due to a slip up in the second half. I thought that the team really put up a fight and deserved at least one point for effort " - PhilipM, manager On a brighter side, Gonzalo Higuain's return to fitness has been encouraging for the team. He recently netted twice in Aston Villa's 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic. Higuain has also penned downed a new contract that will see him stay with the team for the next five seasons. Higuain is currently the league's best performer "I'm deeply honored to be here at Aston Villa. The fans have been very supportive of me and I hope to score goals to thank them for having faith in me. Several other clubs have offered me a place in their team but i know that here is the place i wanna be at. I want to make a name for myself at Aston Villa " - Gonzalo Higuain, forward
  7. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread ASTON VILLA WRAPS UP PRE-SEASON TRANSFERS JANUARY 2 , 2011 The season has yet to commence but manager PhilipM has been kept busy all this while, negotiating with other clubs to bring in reinforcements to strengthen the quality of the bench players in the team. Here are the players that have been brought into the team: Raul Garcia from Atletico Madrid Raul Garcia is a central midfielder brought in from Atletico Madrid. Knowing that he will most likely to be behind Obi Mikel, James Milner and Gareth Barry in the pecking order for a place in the first team, Raul Garcia still agreed to join the Villians this season. "According what I heard from Ever(Ever Banega was purpotedly the middleman in bringing Raul Garcia to Aston Villa), our manager PhilipM is a person who likes to give chances to those who are hardworking. I'm determined to show him that I deserve a spot in the first team week in week out." - Raul Garcia, midefielder Guillermo Ochoa from CLub America Guillermo Ochoa has been brought in to replace the long-serving Brad Friedel who was used in the part-exchange for Raul Garcia. Ochoa, a Mexican international capped 41 times is expected to fill the boots left by Friedel who was outstanding in his last season at the team. "It is an honour to be handed the gloves left by Friedel. I have confidence that I will be able to achieve great things at this club. I'm really impressed with what the manager has done with this team last season. Hopefully, we'll win something in the new year." - Guillermo Ochoa Joao Pereira from Sporting CP The manager decided to bring in Joao Pereira as a cover for Richard Dunne and Lucio who frequently injure themselves in matches. The lack of a stable defence was a headache for the team last season. With the addition of Joao Pereira, the manager hopes to see the team fare better in the league this season.

  9. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread VILLAINS FINISHES SEASON 5 ON A HIGH December 17 , 2010 Higuain was Aston Villa's match winner in their 3-0 win against Preston North End A poor start to the season led Villains fearing for their club's survival in England's most prestigious soccer competition. Critics suggested that Felipe Massa lacked the tactical nous to lead Aston Villa to greater heights. Fans started to call for Massa to be axed while rumours regarding disharmony within the dressing room began surfacing. All wasn't well at Aston Villa with the team being knocked out of both the cup and shield competitions while participation in the SMFA shield took its toil on the players. The team was on a low morale and were left stranded in the bottom half of the league. The club's fortunes changed for the better and they began their revival in the second half of the season. The team set a new club record of being unbeaten in 11 matches while also losing only twice in the second half of the season. The emergence of Agbonlahor as an able replacement for Higuain and Fabiano meant that Aston Villa always have at least two forwards that are fit for the games. Ridding on their 11 match unbeaten run, coupled with wins over fierce rivals for a top-four finish(Man City and Tottenham), Aston Villa managed to leap into the top four and eventually dislodging Liverpool to claim third placing.
  10. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread EVER'S FIRST EVER GOALS SECURES THREE POINTS FOR ASTON VILLA November 21 , 2010 Banega's brace on Saturday was his first ever for Aston Villa As the Wolverhampton and Aston Villa players lined up against each other last night, securing victory against the other team was definitely on their minds. Wolverhampton needed a win badly to avoid relegation this season while Aston Villa needed victory if they were to continue their push for a top 4 finish. In what was a closely-fought match which saw Richard Stearman of Wolverhampton and Obi Mikel of Aston Villa receiving red cards, Aston Villa left the pitch as victors thanks to a brace from Ever Banega. Banega's goals were his first for Aston Villa and he was clearly ecstatic after the match. Said the 2008 Summer Olympic Games soccer gold medalist after his scoring feat, " This feels better than winning the soccer tournament in Beijing. I'm finally able to repay my gratitude towards the manager for his trust in me." "I know it has been a long wait for him for the goals to come. Hopefully it will spark a goal rush !! " - Felipe Massa, manager After beating Wolverphampton Wanderers, Aston Villa have equalled their club record of going ten games unbeaten. With seven games left in the season, Aston Villa are in sixth position, just one point behind the fourth and fifth-placed team, Liverpool and Tottenham. However, the Villians will have to face the top three teams in the league-Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal as well as seventh-placed Preston North End, who gave Liverpool a 3-0 spanking last night. Well, Aston Villa needs to be at their best in this final stretch of the season if they want to meet their pre-season objective of a fourth-place finish.
  11. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ASTON VILLA'S RISING STAR - GABRIEL AGBONLAHOR NOVEMBER 8 , 2010 What do you make of Villa’s performances this season? Well, I must admit that we have been pretty inconsistent this season. After a series of wins, we’ll definitely be struck with a losing streak. It’s as though we need to be constantly reminded not to get too complacent, to stay level-headed with our success on the pitch. I understand that Villa is currently on a 6 match unbeaten run. How do you feel about that going into your next match against Stoke City? Obviously I hope to extend our unbeaten run with a win against Stoke City. They are just three points behind us and a victory would enable us to build on our lead over them and to push for a top 4 finish. How about your manager, do you think he is the right person to lead the team? Unquestionably, I believe that he’s the most suitable person to be in charge of Aston Villa. I have complete trust in him that he’ll lead us to titles in seasons to come. Any hard feelings towards Higuain due to the comments he made regarding you? If you’re referring to the comments he made when the manager asked me to be Fabiano’s replacement, then the answer is no. I know that he sounded a little too harsh but he has good intentions. Gonzalo expected me to score goals right from the start, however I had trouble fitting initially so I rarely scored. He made the comments hoping that I would work harder. I fully understand that. What do you feel about Luis Fabiano’s return from injury? Luis has been a great mentor to me. He has provided me with assistance in terms of my finishing and composure in front of goal. I’m glad that he has recovered from his injury. Of course, his return suggests that I’ll have less playing time but I’ll continue to work hard to show that I deserve a spot in the team. I’m just psyched that he’s finally fit to play. What about your performance this season, any comments? I believe that this has been my best season so far. I do hope that I can continue improving and deliver trophies to the fans.
  12. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread AGBONLAHOR KEEPING LUIS FABIANO OUT OF STARTING 11 NOVEMBER 8, 2010 Fabiano's 6 week injury layoff has presented Agbonlahor the chance to prove his worth to Felipe Massa Gabriel Agbonlahor was considered a backup striker to star forwards, Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Fabiano at the start of this season. However, fans will be pleasantly surprised that he is on the verge of cementing his place in Felipe Massa's starting 11 due to his recent performances. Agbonlahor's rise to stardom began with Luis Fabiano suffering a broken nose and thus being unavailable for six weeks. Agbonlahor was tasked to take on Fabiano's role in the team. At the start, he failed to live up to expectations and was criticised by Higuain for being 'invisible' and less than impactful in league matches. Agbonlahor continued to work hard, scoring 11 of his 12 league goals since he was installed as Fabiano's replacement in the starting 11. With 12 goals to his name, Agbonlahor is currently the top goal scorer for Aston Villa and the league's second highest goal scorer, just one goal short of Liverpool's Fernando Torres. Agbonlahor's current form also means that despite recovering from his injury,Luis Fabiano will have to wait longer before he can reclaim his spot in the first team. " I'm glad to see that there's finally some competition for the forward position. Agbonlahor has been fantastic in my absence, however I'll work hard to claim back my place in the starting lineup." - Luis Fabiano, striker "It's great to see Gabriel blossoming into a world-class striker and scoring week-in week-out for the team. As long as he puts in effort during training, he'll definitely become as good as Gonzalo and Fabiano." - Felipe Massa, manager
  13. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread CAZORLA: HIGUAIN IS JUST BEING MISUNDERSTOOD OCTOBER 1 , 2010 Cazorla, who scored in Wednesday's 1-1 draw against league leaders Arsenal Following Gonzalo Higuain's public rant regarding Aston Villa's transfer policy, several of the club's players have voiced out their opinions as well. Santi Cazorla, Villa's new signing decided to give his two cents' worth regarding the ongoing saga. "I've played against Higuain when we were still in La Liga, he in Real Madrid while I was in Villarreal. I think that he is an amazing player, the gem in the Real Madrid team. I had always hoped to play alongside him since our first encounter. Really glad that I've been given the chance to do so now. He's a nice guy with a big heart. The first few days when I arrived at Villa Park, he was the first to approach me, help me get settled into the new environment and getting use to the team. I believe that he has been misunderstood by the press. It could be that the translator didn't properly convey his message across to the press that clearly, if you know what I mean. They tend to sensationalise certain issues, distorting the truth. Higuain probably feels that the team's results have been disappointing and that he lacks support upfront. However, I believe that we are all trying our best, to not disappoint our fans." - Santi Cazorla, midfielder
  14. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread HIGUAIN SPEAKS OUT AT LAST: ASTON VILLA IS NOTHING WITHOUT ME September 24, 2010 Higuain at Wednesday's post-match press conference "I must admit things are looking really bad here." Higuain said when asked on how he felt after Aston Villa's second successive win. "Even though we managed to notch yet another victory, life isn't exactly a bed of roses for me at Aston Villa. We just lack the quality needed to vie for the championship, something which the manager promised when we first met. Also, the team rely too much on me for the goals. It's been really tiring for me, especially after Luis(Fabiano) got injured. With all due respect to Gabby(Agbonlahor), we need another world class striker if we are to challenge for the title next season. For now, we should be glad that we can stay above the relegation zone!" Higuain's statement came as a shock to Villa fans especially since the club appears to be bouncing back from a poor start to the season, winning back-to-back for the first time this season. Following Higuain's decision to criticise Massa's transfer policy, several team members have voiced out to support their manager. "What is that fella saying? Is he out of he's mind? If he doesn't like it here, he can jolly well pack up his belongings and leave. We have no space for egos here. " - Richard Dunne, defender "Higuain should be more understanding towards Massa. He has been working hard to secure funds for the team but the management has yet to approve of them. Hopefully, we will be able to sign another forward as we are rather depleted in that department." - Brad Friedel, goalkeeper "C'mon, what we need now is unity. We cannot afford to be fight amongst ourselves. Hopefully they will resolve their differences." - Jon Obi Mikel, midfielder .
  15. Re: English Championship 2933 Reporting thread VILLANS EXTEND THEIR WINLESS STREAK TO 8 September 12, 2010 Aston Villa couldn't have wished for a more miserable start to the season. They have already been knocked out of the English Shield and English Cup after succumbing to Derby County (1-2) and Chelsea FC (0-3) respectively. Last night's 0-1 defeat to Wigan meant that Aston Villa have failed to win in 8 matches, leaving them in 11th place in the league. Aston Villa's poor form could be due to the team's failure to find the back of the net in recent matches(364 minutes to be exact). The strikers' poor finishing this season have been a cause for concern. They have combined for a total of 5 goals in 11 league matches while the team's midfielders have scored twice the amount of goals. Higuain reacting after missing yet another scoring opportunity "I do not want to point fingers at anybody but it seems that the team needs to work more on our finishing if we are to improve on our league standings " - Massa, manager being interviewed after the Wigan match. "This is all that I can say, Higuain gotta sort out his problems with the manager as soon as possible.." - James Milner revealed at a press conference of a possible rift between Gonzalo Higuain and team manager Felipe Massa Meanwhile, Higuain declined to be interview after the match after being asked if there was any displeasure towards the team manager. Sources within the team. who declined to be named, have confirmed that several outbursts have already occurred between Massa and Higuain. As word is pretty tight lipped surrounding the relationship between Massa and Higuain, we can only use Villa's next match as an indicator to how the situation has evolved.
