Reading Hold Villa At Home

65.gifReading 1-1 Aston Villa 2.gif

Mitu Ahmed's first match in charge at the Madejski ended up all square. It was an entertaining game to say the least with a total of 28 shots in the match. All of Readings new signings made their debut with new boy Hakan Yakin getting on the score sheet. Boss Sparky was content with the result; "It's a good start, Villa were always the favourites but we showed them that we're no walkover." He also added "This is just the start of many good things to come, we now have a good squad who are hungry for titles"

Match Preview

The first half was very shaky for the home side with Jermain Jenas and Solomon Kalou troubling Reading. Then, on the 30th minute, target man Kalou struck with a thunderbolt. After the Villa goal, Reading were pushing for an equalizer with great work by Nicky Shorey on the left flank. New boy Pranjic also came close but it was his fellow debutee Hakan Yakin with a close try.

Villa kept on dominating in the second half with Ashely Young and Solon Kalou, but the home side managed to hang on for a draw.

Re: Gold Championship 7

Zenit show Sir Travis trademark with another loss!

Sir Travis teams are slow starters, and almost all his teams get off to slow starts in recent seasons. Zenit showed why they still lacked something, and their opponents only needed 2 minutes to show Zenit gaps in defence. Sir Travis could only say this to the press after the match, "Thats another loss. I wonder if it was my mistake to use Igor(Denisov)"

Denisov misses another shot.

The team only had 33% of their shots on target. Robin van Persie had only 1 shot, which he missed horribly.

The defence was worse, with keeper having to do all the work.

Schalke 0-4 Borrisua Monchenblad

Monchenblad shocked the football world by Giving Manager Elliot Hartfree-Pearce the perfect birthday present... a 4-0 win away at schalke!"It was a great result and we are not just here to make up the numbers!"

First Half

Nunez took advantage of Nuers mistake to give Monchenblad an early lead! And the top scorer of division 2 last year scored a clever goal on the 23rd minute and just 9 minutes later Gargano made it 3!

Nunes scored and assisted 14 in 21 games last season and has already scored 3 in 2 in the top division!

Second half

Schalke's second half plan obviusly did not work as gargano scored his second of the game! After that Monchenblad just held on for a historic 4-0 victory!

Gargano only scored 4 all last season but today scored 2!

So at the moment Borrisua have shocked everyone and are third and with Nunez already leading the goal scoring charts things are looking up

Sporting CP maintain promising start to campaign

AEK Athens 2-2 Sporting

the two side men, piotr trochowski and allesandro rosina get the goals to earn sporting a point, as they return from athens with their heads held high. trochowski, who has been touted as a possible 90 rated player by the press, has had his future uncertain in recent weeks, and was the subject of a £14m move by italian giants AC Milan, which sansom rejected swiftly, saying 'although its a very respectable offer from milan, which i considered for a short time, i feel piotr's future lies in sporting, he has started the season well on a personal note, and i feel he can finish the season playing just as well. he has been involved with the german national team for a number of games now, and he has lots of room to improve'.

3 players could leave lisbon in squad shake up

alberto gilardino, benoit assou ekotto and miguel areias are all roumered to be on their way out. gilardino's agent is working to broker a deal to an un -named russian club, whilst ekotto and areias are simply on their way out to two un named clubs, both for relatively small fees.

youngster vedran corluka, the subject of many an inquiry from a number of managers, is staying put for the time being, says sansom 'vedran is a key member of the team, and although, in time, it is almost inevitable he will move on to bigger and better things, i believe he will stay here till at least the end of the season, maybe longer'.

another san lorenzo player signed by sansom!

sansom has decided to spend in total, £15m on three players - alessio tacchinardi, juan valeron and diego klimowicz, all of whom are either out on loan or available, depending on how sansom feels he can replace them. he has targeted one midfielder for now, but things could easily change. sansom has asked any managers interested in taking any of the 88 rated duo to PM him before saturday.

After an opening day defeat to Getafe, Zaragoza pull off a huge shock by winning 1 - 0 against Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

Simone Perrotta, who was recently the target of big money bids from his old club Roma, scored the only goal of the game in the 41st minute.

A move up to 10th place for Zaragoza who have revealed they will be doing all they can to break into the top 4 at the end of the season.

Division 1 - Wed 21 Nov 2007

Giuseppe Meazza (85,000)

Attendance - 84,602

115.gifAC Milan 3-3 Udinese 131.gif

Didier Drogba (6) ---------- Cristiano Doni (13)

Andriy Shevchenko (38) ------- Nuno Gomes (17)

Didier Drogba (66) ----------Antonio Di Natale (44)

After an easy win on Day 1, Udinese went into the game at the San Siro fully aware of the difficulties of breaking down the Rossoneri XI.

After just six minutes, Didier Drogba netted with a fortunate deflection ending up in Cudicini's net. Not long after, Doni got an equaliser, his spectacular effort gave Dida no chance, 1-1. Nuno Gomes then gave the champions a shock when he finished off from a well worked move on the 17th minute. On the 38th minute, Shevchenko climbed high enough to meet the cross and place it into the top corner. Di Natale then got the 5 of the half, putting his side 3-2 up on the 44th minute, confidently slotting it past the helpless keaper.

Milan began to control the second half and it was no shock when Didier Drogba got his 2nd and the games final goal, blasting it in after pushing his way into the box.

Managers comments -

"It was a decent performance but we relied on luck a bit too much. A draw was the fair result and I think that the Milan coach will agree. Kris Boyd, who jioned for 10m had the most difficult team on his debut and after time, I know he'll show his true talent. With Juventus next, I've got to expect all 3, even when we're the visitors. I honestly can't be happy with a point so I'll be asking for us to be committed in our attacks and not back out of anything. I haven't decided whether to drop any of the players, Garry O'Connor, Ivankov and Kahlenberg have impressed in training and look quite eager to play. By Tomorrow evening, I would have chose my XI."

Match Preview - Vitoria Setubal vs Sporting CP

after a decent start of one win and one draw, sporting fans have been pleased with the way sansom has successfully changed his teams style with success, and managed to get all his players up to superb morale, with the exeption of marek cech, who awkwardly started the season with a 3 game ban after seeing red the last match of the season. sansom believes, that he has moulded a squad capable of winning the league, at least one domestic cup, and reaching the quarter finals of the SMFA shield. his squad are mainly made up of young underrated europeans with plenty to prove, held together by a handfull of experienced proffesionals such as costinha, lucarelli, nikopolidis, juan valeron and diego klimowicz. sansom, as a manager traditionally takes one season to sort his squad out and to put together tactics, then in the next season, blossom by challenges for titles, and invariably winning silverware.

1) since the setup started, sansom was pondering between managing deportivo and sporting, eventually deciding that sporting had more potential, and felt it was an unlikely event that with deportivo he would ever be able to topple the likes of real madrid and athletico.

2) only 2 members of the current sporting squad have remained from the original one - defender fernando abel, and rookie goalie rui patricio

sporting have decided to go with the following line up to the trip to setubal (3-5-2):

after what sansom described "a small chink in our suit of armour [about sportings midweek draw to AEK Athens]" , sporting will get back to winning ways with a 4-0 thrashing of the portuguese minnows

65.gifReading VS West Ham United 85.gif

After drawing his first game in charge against Aston Villa, Reading boss Mitu Ahmed believes that his team can now take something from West Ham United in the Madesjki tonight. Reading are currently lying on 16th place with just a point. A win against West Ham could move them up. West Ham United however, are looking very strong. Sparky believes they will be a bigger threat than Villa last week; "West Ham United have got magnificent players all round, Rogerio Ceni, Mikael Silvestre, Manuel Rui Costa and Louis Saha are just a taster of the talent they have in the changing rooms. We will again be hoping for a draw."

Reading Team News

Reading are still without winger Steven Hunt (Injured) and Irish forward Shane Long (Injured), Kevin Doyle and Danijel Pranjic will be filling in for them again. New boys Leonardo Talamonti, Nebojsa Pavlovic and Hakan Yakin are all expected to start.

Hammers Team News

West Ham United have a full squad of superstars to choose from. Target man Louis Saha and playmaker Manuel Rui Costa are expected to start. West Ham United are 15th, just a place ahead of Reading. A loss could see them drop, and a win could see them rise.

Match Predictions

West Ham United are stronger than Reading at every position. Reading will have to play defensively and hope for a draw.

Reading 0-2 West Ham United

Match Review

Newcastle United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Both sides were looking for their first wins of the season as Newcastle welcomed Tottenham to St James' Park. Tottenham made one change as new loan signing Lisandro Lopez replaced ex-loanee da Silva Muiz Liedson. Newcastle kept the same side that lost away at Blackburn, the Saturday previous.

Shay Given was kept busy in the opening exchanges as he pushed one shot wide with his fingertips, and punched another strike wide for a corner. Michael Owen hit the outside of the Irishman's post after 20 minutes, and Tottenham made the breakthrough twelve minutes later. In the 32nd minute, Michael Owen hit a powerful right foot shot past Shay Given. Just before the break, Elmander was denied by the woodwork for Newcastle.

((Michael Owen gave Spurs the half-time lead against his old club, partnered tonight by Lisandro Lopez))

But only one minute into the second half, the ever lively Johan Elmander got an equaliser for Newcastle. He controlled a long ball over the defence superbly, before volleying past the motionless Paul Robinson. Christian Zaccardo was denied a penalty for the hosts, as Berbatov headered wide and Steed Malbranque narrowly missed. But the next goal was crucial, and it came only two minutes from time as ex-Spurs talisman Dimitar Berbatov used his blistering pace and then chipped the keeper.

Match Preview

Sheffield Wednesday - Tottenham Hotspur

Newly promoted Sheffield Wednesday host Tottenham tonight at Hillsborough, as Spurs look for their first win of the season, yet the Owls look for their second win in a row. Wednesday lost away at Middlesbrough on the opening day of the season, but took the three points last week as Southampton came to Sheffield.

Sheffield Wednesday have no injuries or suspensions, and their three loan signings could prove vital tonight. Wednesday have Royston Drenthe on loan from Chelsea, Manuel Fernandes on loan from Manchester United, added to loanee David Navarro from Milan. They have a very old squad however, with the average age of their last starting eleven being 31. Tottenham will look to exploit this, by playing fast, flowing football tonight.

Spurs make two changes, both of which are tactical tonight, as they travel to Sheffield expectant of returning with three points. With Nery Castillo and Ryan Babel both under performing this season so far, both have been dropped for tonight's match as Barry Ferguson and Taras Mykhalyk replace the duo. Both make their Spurs debut. On loan Lopez starts once again partnering Michael Owen up front and Ross Philp expects them to get the goals tonight.

((Ryan Babel is left out of the eleven tonight, after a poor start to the season))

Philp has changed the formation, and opted for 3-5-2 tonight:-

1. Paul Robinson

2. Pascal Chimbonda, 4. Ledley King, 3. Michael Dawson

5. Taras Mykhalyk

7. Steed Malbranque, 8. Barry Ferguson, 6. Gilberto, 11. Bastian Schweinsteiger

10. Lisandro Lopez, 9. Michael Owen

13. Manuel Almunia, 12. Phillipe Senderos, 14. Stijn Schaars, 15. Ryan Babel, 16. Nery Castillo

Doyle Strikes Late To Save Reading

65.gifReading 2-2 West Ham United 85.gif

Reading drew again at the Madesjki stadium thanks to an 81st minute strike from Kevin Doyle. It was all Hammers with the East London club having more possession, more shots on goal and on target. But Reading managed to hold on.

The visitors scored the first of the game through a strike from Michalis Konstantinou. Hammers kept pushing and pushing, all Reading could do was defend. Onto the second half and West Ham scored again, this time through target man Louis Saha who drove home a 20yard strike!

It looked over for Reading who came close a number of times, but they finally scored when Graeme Murty tapped in a beautiful passing movement. And then onto the 81st minute, when Kevin Doyle thumped a low shot past the keeper!

Kevin Doyle Saves Reading

"We Were Extremely Lucky"

BBC Sports caught up with Sparky after his teams close encounter against West Ham United. He told BBC; "To be honest, we should of lost, they were stronger than us at everything. Louis Saha was fantastic for them and rightly picked up the man of the match award. First half we conceded two and it looked to be over. But after the half time team talk, it was a whole new Reading. I'm proud of the lads, they gave everything they had in that second half and it showed. For me, a win isn't important if they carry on playing like they did at the end." He also added "I'm still looking for my first win, hopefully we can get that against Birmingham City on Wednesday."

Zenit grab first win of season!

Zenit looked set for a draw at half-time before manager Sir Travis told them," A win is a must today." Sol Campbell may be a defender, but his passing skills led to the first goal. Igor Denisov scored the second in the 52th min, with a free-kick that bended past the wall and the opposing 'keeper. Zenit keeper won the MoM award, but must be moaning after he carelessly let Akmar pull back a goal. Robin van Persie marked his last match for Zenit with a goal.

Sol Campell not too happy with the Akmar goal.

The team next match is against Russian rivals CSKA Moscow, a must-win match.

Re: Gold Championship 7

Issue 2

An up and down week for us this past week. No further signings have been made and offer's that were just not good enough were turned down.

We are looking to bring in defender's and will hope to bring in 1 or 2 90+'s before the mid season break.

On Wednesday night we entertained a Lazio side that had previously drawn with Sampdoria in the first game of the season. We expected a tough game from our bitter rivals and that is what we got. The match was decided on the 21st minute after a goal mouth scramble. We outplayed them and so it was a dissapointing defeat.

This evening we played host to Torino who had won there first and drawn there second game. I wanted the team to pressure our opponents early on and when Philippe Mexes decided to shot from all of 35 yards in the first minute I was about to jump out of my seat and shout at him that he had more time when the ball sailed into the top corner.

The pressure didnt continue though as we conceded on the 16th minute after poor defending.

Frank Ribery got his first goal of the season while Iturra made it 2-2 going into half time.

At half time I decided to bring on Marco Amelia for Oliver Kahn who although had been unlucky didnt seem to be performing to the best of his ability.

Ribery got his second of the game while Liedson came on to make his league debut for the club and make it 4-2 before Sabri pulled yet another back for Torino to make it 4-3 on the 84th minute.

Liedson made sure of the win 1 minute later and kept his reputation of making great debut performances with his second after a tap in.

Ribery ended the game on a negative note after getting booked in the 88th minute for gamesmanship which I have been trying to dismiss in the side.

We now sit 4th in the table and are only 1 point behind early leaders Juventus who thrashed Udinese 7-0 tonight!

Next week we travel to Atalanta and face Internazionale next saturday at home in the first title contender game of the season.

Re: Gold Championship 7

Sheffield Wednesday 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur

All the attention was on the debutants Barry Ferguson and Taras Mykhalyk as they looked to help Tottenham grab their first win of the season. Anything less than a win for Spurs would be a failure but three goals meant that there would be no upset at Hillsborough.

Tottenham started the better as a header from loanee Lisandro Lopez grazed the Wednesday crossbar, before Michael Owen's header went narrowly wide. In the 13th minute, Tottenham took the lead through Lisandro Lopez who hit a powerful shot in off the post. Steed Malbranque's crisp strike on 33 minutes hit the side netting before goalscorer Lopez was booked for dangerous play. But Lopez did not let it affect his performance as he doubled Spurs' lead with a clever finish after 38 minutes. Poor communication in the Tottenham back line, gifted Wednesday a lifeline through Nicola Amoruso's 42nd minute strike.

((Lisandro Lopez, above in his Porto days, grabbed two vital goals in the first half to give Tottenham a 2-1 lead at the break))

In form Lisandro Lopez completed a hat-trick using his pace and power to force his way into the box, before lashing home past Wednesday keeper Antoni Prats. Bastian Schweinsteiger's chip came back off the bar six minutes later, before Paul Robinson denied Sheffield Wednesday a way back into the game with sharp reflexes. Lopez could've had a fourth as his chip had the keeper scrambling back towards his goal, but it went narrowly over. And Barry Ferguson on his Premiership debut missed a header from six yards out with seven minutes left.

((Taras Mykhalyk, above in his Dynamo days, played excellently tonight with his performance only overshadowed by man of the match Lopez))

''We fully expected the win and I would have been dissapointed with my players if they hadn't came away here with a win. But they done as they were asked, and Lisandro showed the bit of class that has been missing at this club by netting a great hattrick to secure the win. This is the first win, and more will come with two wins expected next'', said manager Ross Philp.

''It was great to make my debut, and to be honest it was a shock. The gaffer came in this morning and said he was going for a change of formation and that Ryan and Nery were being left out. I was pleased and really nervous, but I was very happy with my performance. I just hope I get the nod for Saturday'', explained Barry Ferguson.

Sporting record another Rout of goals

Vitoria Setubal 1-5 Sporting

its now an incredible 13 goals in the first three matches for sporting as two goals from de jong, and one apiece from nicolae dica, allesandro rosina and alberto gilardino give portuguese minnows a thrashing at the hands of sporting. it was a 'good game had by all' says sansom, 'from goalkeeper to attack', and 'this victory shows that we are genuine contendors for the league this year. new loanee benoit pedretti slotted in seemlessley as he sat in front of the back three, breaking up attack after attack from the baffled setubal attack. with 64% possesion, 20 shots on goal and 9 of those on target, no-one could complain with the scoreline.

although its 'misleading' as sansom describes looking at the table at this stage of the season, sporting lie second behind greek outfit olympiacos who have the only 100% record intact of the league. however, crucially from a sporting point of view, rivals for the title porto and benfica have both slipped up, and sporting have so far been quick to pounce on any chances given to them, which sansom says 'is the way in which we will win the majority of our games this season'.

after robin van persie (finally) completed his long awaited £50m move to aston villa, the gilardino saga has come to an end, and until further notice, will carry on playing for sporting. armed with a sizeable budget, sansom hasnt ruled out making another signing sooner or later, but says he is unlikely to sell any of his first team squad unless new arrivals are better than the current players.

overall, an 8.5/10 start to the season for sporting, and who knows what the possibilities are with this squad.

"Tonight, I didn't know who was playing, Juventus vs ????."

Juventus 7-0 Udinese.

Goals from Pavel Nedved (2), Palladino (2), Del Piero, Rosales and Chiellini rapped up the worst defeat since Tony was appointed over a season ago. The tactician told a reporter after the game, "There's times when a player forgets what he's doing, nearly everyone was like that tonight and they know that. I think they'll take the criticism though and begin to work on a new approach for Wednesdays game against Palermo. Inter, Juve then Palermo isn't easy and it would of been too difficult for us to be third like we were at the end of last season. One loss can't end all hope, we were like this at the beginning of last season and yet we were able to end third. Our defence will need to have more work and on Wednesday, the formation will probably change."
