Re: Gold Championship 7

Chelsea News

Chelsea have been quietly active in the transfer market this season with 14 players joining the club and 4 players leaving. Leigh Auston signed 3 more youngters last night for the bargain combined price of £40,000 bring the total number in his squad to a very managable 100!!

There has been some high profile departures from the club with Auston keen to bring the whole squad below 30 years of age in an attempt to dominate the English Premier League and the Champions League for years to come! Both Thierry Henry and Alessandro Nesta have been allowed to leave for pastures new and high profile arrivals at the club this season include Xavi, Rosina, Corluka, Quagliarella and Lavezzi. The transfers are not expected to stop there either with a deal agreen in principle for Lucas Biglia andd possibly a deal agreed to sell Joe Cole with 2 high profile players coming to Chelsea. There has also been a lot of interest in Ashley Cole who has been told he can leave for the right deal.

On a more sour note, Chelsea relinquished top spot in the EPL this Wednesday with a 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford. Man Utd have been a real bogey team for Auston's Chelsea winning all 4 meetings between the 2 teams since the start of last season! Auston expects to get back to winning ways when the team host Leamington's Steve's excellent Villa team tomorrow evening!

Re: Gold Championship 7

Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Birmingham City

Tottenham looked to bounce back tonight after a midweek defeat at home to Middlesbrough. With a far superior squad, and a full squad at that to pick from, it was all going to come down to whether Philp would get his tactics right or not. There were no changes since Wednesday's defeat for Spurs.

After a scramble in the box after ten minutes, LISANDRO LOPEZ was on hand to bundle the ball over the line and give Tottenham the best possible start. Michael Owen's overhead kick went just over, before Stephen Clemence's run forward failed with an end product. Clemence threatened once again, but goalkeeper Paul Robinson was on hand to keep Spur' lead intact. Robinson was again called on as he dived low to tremedously thwart Birmingham once again, before he stopped Ailton from bringing his side level.

((The sight of Lisandro Lopez scoring at Porto, has now become a regular occurence at Spurs under Ross Philp, since his loan move from Barcelona))

On 61 minutes, after being booked for gamesmanship, MICHAEL OWEN doubled Spurs' lead as he headed home the cross from the left. Lisandro Lopez and Gilberto both wasted chances to extend Tottenham's lead before Birmingham clawed their way back into the game ten minutes from time. GONCALVES AILTON poked the ball past the defender on the line following a goalmouth scramble in Robinson's six yard area. But any chance of a comeback was cancelled out as APARECIDO DA GILBERTO SILVA headed powerfully past Birmingham City goalkeeper Flavio Roma.

((Gilberto for short, above shown on international duty, capped off a fine performance tonight, with an 85th minute goal))

Tonight's win for Spurs, their fourth of the season, takes the side from fourth, to cement a place in third behind league leaders Middlesbrough and second placed Manchester United. Spurs sit above sides such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and last season's surprise package Manchester City. Next up is an away tie at 14th placed Blackburn Rovers.

Ryan Babel, an integral part of last season's squad at White Hart Lane, has secured a deal worth £25,000,000 that will see him move Italy to ply his trade at Juventus. Babel said earlier ''I am not playing anymore and want a new challenge. To play at Juventus is a dream come true for me''. Babel has had little league playing time since the arrival of Bastian Schweinsteiger.

((20 year old prospect Ryan Babel will move to Juventus to play against teams such as Milan, Inter and Roma))

FC Kobenhavn 4 - 1 SK Brann

Last year's scandinavian champions Kobenhavn now look to have found form after picking up their 4th win in a row in all competitions.

After early season losses to title contenders Lillestrom SK and Brondby IF, Kobenhavn have now picked up 5 wins in the league and have moved up to 4th in the league, just 3 points behind the league leaders. The danish giants have also progressed to the Scandinavian Cup 2nd round and have Lyn Oslo in the 1st round of the Scandinavian Shield, which Kobenhavn won last year.

Kobenhavn now have a very big bunch of promising youngsters to go with the already very experienced players at the club. But once again it is 37-year-old Jose Calderon who is the top-scorer for Kobenhavn, bagging himself 7 goals in 6 league games so far.

I posted a match report / team update last Sunday (12-02-2007, 08:47 PM) for 'Valencia' but it was caught by the boards filter.

For those who will not have noticed and have any interest, the post was approved earlier today and has appeared on the previous page of this thread. :)

I am sorry that it's a week behind the current status of the setup!

Re: Gold Championship 7

Sporting lose one, and win one

Sporting 0 - 1 Besiktas

once again, sporting emerge as losers from a game they dominated, with 21 shots on goal compared to 11 to besiktas, more possesion, and 9 corners compared to besiktas' 4. they also had the higher ratings of the two teams, which is why sansom was not too happy after the game: 'we should have won this match by at least two goals, its 3 points lost for sure'. nobre got the only goal of the match against the run of play, to add a bit of pressure to sporting to perform in the next match.

Crvena Zvezda 2 - 3 Sporting

sporting get back to winning ways with a high scoring match against croatian outfit zvezda. star striker alberto gilardino got two goals, a 9/10 performance, and man of the match, with sansom singing his praises: 'gilardino has done fantastically well this season, and i believe his partnership with lucarelli is really paying its dividends now. they have 9 goals between them already, and a further 10 assists, which is an incredible start for them'. altintop hamit, sportings turkish right sided midfielder got the opening goal for lisbon as he scored his first goal of the season after 3 starts.

Transfer / Player Updates

after a season of bad luck with ratings, sansom for once got a couple of risers:

andreas gorlitz

83 > 86

martin demichelis

91 > 92

altintop hamit

89 > 90

the former bayern munich trio all get a rise, to justify why sansom signed them.

Re: Gold Championship 7

Blackburn Rovers 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur

Ross Philp's Tottenham went into this one looking to continue on from Saturday's home win against Birmingham City. Blackburn boasted players such as Pedersen, McCarthy and Bentley in their eleven so it looked to prove to be a tough game for Philp and his side. They travelled to Ewood Park, knowing a win would keep them in the top three.

After only one minute, Brad Friedel in the Blackburn goal parried a shot, but Ledley King followed up with the re-bound to give Spurs an early lead. Barry Ferguson was denied a blatant penalty before Gilberto struck the cross bar with a header, and in the 22nd minute, Spurs' lead was doubled. Michael Owen finished at the second attempt with a toe-poke, and less than one minute later it was three, as Gilberto hit a trademark strike. But as Spurs looked to be cruising, with ten minutes of the first half remaining, Ryan Nelsen headed in a cross from the left to get Rovers back into the game.

((Ledley King, who came under much criticism last season came up with the opening goal and a man of the match performance in a fine win against Blackburn Rovers))

The next goal was always going to be crucial, and it went the way of Tottenham as Taras Mykhalyk ran onto a through ball and lashed home. The 46th minute goal was followed up by Barry Ferguson hitting the woodwork before Bastian Schweinsteiger finished poorly. There were no more goalscoring chances at either end as the win for Spurs keeps them at third in the English League.

((Defensive midfielder Taras Mykalyk has really impressed since he made the move to London, and scored an important goal to fend off any Rovers comeback last night))

With that win, Spurs remain third in the league a point behind joint leaders Middlesbrough and Manchester United, as they still sit above Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. Next up for Tottenham is a home match against Wigan Athletic, who are currently sixth and are continuing from their fantastic first season.

Re: Gold Championship 7

Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Wigan Athletic

Spurs came into this one off the back of an excellent start to season two which saw them sit comfortably in third place. They had beaten Blackburn 4-1 away at Ewood Park midweek, but they would face a tough task tonight against a Wigan side sitting sixth place in the league - following on from last season's great first season. Philp rested no players, as the second string will meet Swindon Town on Monday in the Cup, with Lisandro Lopez being replaced by Mladen Petric after he was recalled by Barca.

After only one minute, Wigan threatened to silence the White Hart Lane crowd as Lionel Mathis' headered grazed Paul Robinson's crossbar. And German superstar who moved in the off season from Bayern, Bastian Schweinsteiger scored his first goal in Spurs colours as his deflected shot gave Spurs the lead. Pascal Chimbonda kept up his fine form of getting booked, after he seemingly was booked for a fair tackle. Gilberto missed an easy chance, before Henri Camara somehow struck wide of an open goal after 16 minutes. And that was to prove costly as loanee Mladen Petric received a square ball before he turned and rasped home a screamer on the edge of the box.

((German midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, shown above on international duty, got his first Tottenham goal eight minutes in. One of many to come hopes Philp))

Using his blistering pace, Mladen Petric struck again, lengthening Spurs' lead as he left the Wigan defenders in his wake, before chipping Chris Kirkland. Emile Heskey went close to giving Wigan a slight chance of a comeback, but the dismissal of Denny Landzaat for a petulant kick out at Gilberto meant that after 62 minutes, the match was effectively over. Bastian Schweinsteiger grew in confidence through his time on the ball and blasted wide of the goal as he looked to extend his goalscoring tally in London. Taras Mykhalyk also went close, but Tottenham held on for a priceless three points.

((Croatian forward, above in his Basle days, struck twice for Spurs tonight almost singlehandedly winning the match for the London side tonight at home))

The win takes Tottenham second, behind last season's champions Manchester United, ahead of some important matches. The reserve side will face Swindon Town on Monday in the second round of the English Cup, before Spurs travel to Everton in the league, followed by an away trip at Sociedad in the SMFA Shield, and that's before they host Manchester United the night after in the league. West Brom are then the challengers in round two of the English Shield, but here's how the top four looks:

Happy manager Ross Philp was interviewed by the BBC after the game, for tonight's Match of the Day programme: "Last season, we were poor and didn't start well. This season its totally different, as we used to concede many and not score to much. This season, we have tightened it up at the back, and teams seem to be struggling to keep our strike force at bay. Unfortunately loanee Lopez joined Liedson back at Barcelona as they have both had great spells here. Mladen has done the same, and I shalln't negotiate with the Barca manager again. Thanks"

Re: Gold Championship 7

English Cup: Second Round

Swindon Town 1-6 Tottenham Hotspur

Ross Philp made eleven changes to the side that beat Wigan on Saturday for this English Cup second round tie as they travelled to Swindon Town who weren't doing to well in the third division.

Ireneusz Jelen scored after only ten minutes and then again on 17 minutes to fire Spurs two up. Nery Castillo then headed home a cross from the left after 24 minutes. RetoZiegler finished at the second attempt on 39 minutes, making it four nil as the sides went in at half time.

Ireneusz Jelen completed his hat trick lashing home three minutes after the break before Nery Castillo got his second and Spurs' sixth on 56 minutes. Dean Heffernan salvaged a late consolation for the hosts, but Spurs' second string marched on to round three.

Everton 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Philp kept the same side that demolished Swindon Town on the road, knowing it was a much harder test and a loss would see them surrender their place second in the league. Everton were struggling in the league on the other hand, but would they be too strong for Spurs' weakened side as the squad was rested for the SMFA Shield.

The senior Everton players showed their class and started the better as Andy Van Der Meyde went close; Gonazlo Robledo fired over; and Vincenzo Montella struck the post. But Spurs fought back as Ireneusz Jelen went close from a corner before Tom Huddlestone's strike struck the frame of the goal, smashing a 25-yarder onto the bar. Van Der Meyde then missed an open goal, before Jelen and Ziegler let good opportunities slip for the visitors. Just before half time there was a bit of controversy as Gonzalo Robledo received a second yellow card and was dismissed for a petulant kick at Tom Huddlestone.

Hossam Ghaly's free kick just after the hour mark was the first real chance in the second period - as it was cleared off the line and away to safety. Jelen's chip was also cleared off the line as Tottenham began to control the match before James McFadden threatened Paul Robinson's goal with a decent effort. Van Der Meyde continued to threaten, but the breakthrough came from forward Vincenzo Montella. On 72 minutes, the striker dummied the Spurs keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net. Spurs looked for the equaliser and Castillo again hit the woodwork, as they also spurned chances through Ghaly and Jelen too.

The Daily Moskavite

Spartak Moskva 3 - 0 Illichivets

Spartak grabbed a vital three points in the race for the title against Ukranian outfit Illichivets. In there previous game Johnsons men drew 4-4 with Zenit, a team they usually get a result against, however Johnson remained up beat, even though his side are still without there start striker PAVLYUCHENKO. The Russian international has only played two games this season and his absence to some is why Spartak havent got all the results they wanted and deserved.

He is expected back from his injured ankle in 3 weeks

Spartak very much dominated this game, however did let the opposition have a few to many shots in Johnsons eyes. The first 15 minutes Illichivets goal was peppered with shots and their keeper did well to keep it at 0-0/ I the 18th minute, Dindane scored a beauty living up to all the superlatives the pundits are laying upon him. The keeper had no chance and the fans sounded their appreciation.

Illichivets after they had conceded started to settle down and play some football, however they couldnt break down Spartak and in the 40th minute they were punished by pure magic courtesy of Suazo, the Chilean ace curled a right foot shot from the edge of the area which gliding into the net.

This goal just before half time must of killed Illichivets of as Spartak tightened their grip on the game preventing them from playing football. It all became a little laid back, and a small scare occured, TSYKHMEISTRUK blasted wide of an open goal, this unfortunately kick started Moskva again and Dindane grabbed his brace in the 81st minute after rising above all the defenders and knocking the ball home.

Both strikers were rated at 10/10 but Dindane's brace made sure he went home with the MoM award.

Re: Gold Championship 7

Real Sociedad 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur

As expected, Ross Philp made ten changes to the side that was defeated away at Everton midweek, Nery Castillo the only survivor with his position suiting the formation used by Philp tonight. Spurs were favourites, sitting fourth in English division one, with Sociedad twelfth in Spain's second tier.

After only eleven minutes, Nery Castillo climbed above the Sociedad defenders and headed past goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. It gave Spurs the perfect start in a match where they started favourites, and begun the match well, making chances.

Bastian Schweinsteiger headed wide, before Castillo headed onto the roof of the Sociedad net. The second half saw Sociedad start the better, but Spurs spurned an excellent chance through midfielder Aparecido de Gilberto Silva when he shot wide.

A long ball down the middle on the hour mark, was collected by Steed Malbranque before the Frenchman drilled home a right foot shot, effectively sending Spurs into the last 32 of the SMFA Shield.

Spurs' award for tonight's victory, and going one further than last year, was a home tie against Scandanavian side Lillestrom SK who are indefinitely a poor side. Tottenham will fancy their chances of moving on, but it will be tough from then on with teams like Ajax, Arsenal, Benfica, Roma, Lazio and even Barcelona left.

Brought in from the unmanaged wilderness, SUNDERLAND have a new and in a case of art imitating life imitating art, in experienced manger.

t_d has accepted his first Gold position, a life long supporter of Sunderland, he pledges to do the fans proud.

''Walking into this job means the world to me. With them being relegated last year, and hovering above the relegation zone again this year whilst selling all their best players it has been excruciating to watch. We will be stronger this year, i can promise you that.''

10 games in they are only 2 points above 18th, but at this stage he still believes promotion is possible. A big budget should be backing him, sunderland having sold David Nugent, Nigel Reo-Coker and Lee Cattermole this season alone.

So far he's made a few signings, mostly additions to their youth side..the only first team additions being made are Paul McShane who goes straight into their side for the game tonight, and Kevin Lejeune and Axel Witsel both on loan from chelsea.

''Having taken this job so late on, most good prospect have long been snapped up, making my job harder ten fold. My youth side as well are packed full of youngster i've never seen nor heard of before so thats gonna take some research. But i will persevere and will be here for the long haul*. I Relish this great challenge i've been offered.''

[*Unless of course i can nab sunderland in the upcoming Gold Set up 10:p ]

Re: Gold Championship 7

Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 Manchester United

Spurs approachd this one on the back of a fantastic European away win at Real Sociedad, whereas United were left reeling from their group hammering at the hands of Fenerbahce. United kept the same side that lost in Europe, while Spurs boss Philp saw no reason to change his side that won the night before.

After 8 minutes, and having already fired over, Mladen Petric beat two defenders and slotted home with a great solo effort. And just a minute later, Cristiano Ronaldo struck Paul Robinson's near post with a volley, threatening to come back into the match. In the 11th minute, captain Gilberto Silva followed up on the rebound after Van Der Sar palmed the ball out to the Brazilian's feet. And it was three, only six minutes later as Barry Ferguson volleyed past Van Der Sar after excellently controlling the long ball. Mladen Petric made up for Chimbonda's penalty denied, as he poached with a goal on 22 minutes. Surprisingly, in the first period, there were no more goals.

((Petric, above in his FC Basle days, has now scored four goals in three Spurs appearances and has really done well up top with English forward Michael Owen))

Captain Gilberto Silva scored his second of the match, seven minutes into the second half as he volleyed past Van Der Sar - the Dutch stopper now having been beaten three times tonight. Xabi Alonso chipped just over before John O'Shea struck the woodwork, and even with a goal it would have been a little late. And another goal for either side wasn't found despite Paul Scholes spurning a great chance late on.

((Above, celebrating a goal in his Arsenal days, Gilberto Silva put in an excellent captain's performance tonight - as he scored two goals against giants Manchester United))

And after that win, Spurs propel to second in the league only one point behind United, whom they hammered tonight. Aston Villa and Middlesbrough occupy third and fourth; with Bolton, Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham in the SMFA Shield places; and Newcastle United, Reading and Southampton struggling in the bottom three.

Re: Gold Championship 7

New Sunderland Manager t_d was over joyed to see his side overcome dirty leeds, especially having twice gone behind.

Having gone 9 games without a win, they have now won back to back games, only their second and third wons of the season and have moved up to 13th.

''We're now three points ahead of the bottom three and just 9 behind promotion, but we dont want to get ahead of ourselves just yet.''

A stadium with more empty seats than fans 'saw' a thrilling end to end game. Sunderland just edged possession and had more corners but were out shot, despite getting all five of their shots on target and went behind just 2 minutes into the game. Maciej Korzym has only played three times in two seasons for sunderland but has now racked 3 goals, 4 assists and last night added a Man of the Match award. 'I think we may see a bit more of him from now on' said his delighted manager.

After missing two good chances to level he poked the ball past the defender on the line following a goalmouth scramble.

Not one for the purists but they all count!

Just 10 minutes later dirty leeds took the lead again, through Diego Tristan, a right foot shot in off the woodwork and thats how they went in at half time, 2-1 down. Thankfully for the home supporters who did show up they came out fighting in the second half. Another goal from Korzym, this time a wonderous unstoppable strike set up a chance for glory - and it was taken by the most unlikely of sources - Chris Baird. But all the plaudits after the game were taken by the young Pole.

Re: Gold Championship 7

Still in all club competitions!

Philp's set out a weakened side tonight as they inflicted West Brom's first defeat this season on them, at the Hawthorns. The Baggies sit top of English division two but Philp was confident his side would prevail. The won 2-0 courtesy of goals from Reto Ziegler and Hossam Ghaly, both interviewed after the game: "We both got our accounts off and running for the season and are pleased with the win. It was a weakened side but the manager got it spot on again. We surge onwards!"

With tonight's success in the English Shield, it followed the club's wins against Swindon Town and Sunderland in the English Cup. Even at the third round stage, the draw has been kind to them, but Philp knows they can take nothing for granted: "I know from last year that it will be tough. Although we are at home, Burnley(Cup) and Bradford(Shield) will come and defend so it will be up to my team to break them down and progress to the latter stages of both competitions".

On the European front, after the comfortable victory away at Real Sociedad, Philp has praised his side in the way that they have came on leaps and bounds since his first season at the club: "We have drawn Lillestrom in the next round and we are at home. The match comes at a busy point in the season with the Cup, Shield and League all being competitions we are still in. But I built the squad to cope for these times and I am sure they will not let me or themselves down".

Tottenham really have been a rejuvenated side since their first season under Philp, with their 5-0 demolition of defending champions Manchester United opitimising their performances of late. This has not gone un-noticed assured the manager: "Three defeats all season at this point, I am loving it and I am sure the boys are too. But they deserve it for the work they put in on the training ground. We will be really tested in the near future with our very hectic schedule".

Re: Gold Championship 7

Mackems Endure Season of Woe

There was no festive spirit nor cheers for the Black Cats down at deepdale this boxing day. Now just one point and one goal of the relegation zone they missed a chance to move within six points of third.

''I'd like to talk about positives we got from this game - most of the players now are raring to go. We saw the return to action of Giles Barnes, our new signing Mandana looked good in goal, Chris Brunt is back fit for the next match, and the boys out injured are that much closer to coming back for us.''

In truth - there are few positives to take from this game, and the boys out injured are going to be very necessary. A new player to add to that ever growing list of casualties this season is last games match winning hero - defender Chris Baird.

''Yes that wasn't a good moment for us, the lad has a pretty bad calf strain. We'll know more after the scan but he's looking at missing around 4 weeks.''

Poor performances by two youngsters Maximiliano Montero and Adam Hammill has seen them sent back to the youth team and replaced by Richard Stearman and Nathan Dyer, but really all the waiting centres around newer signings Dean Whitehead and Nyron Nosworthy, more experienced and match ready players. In teh long run youth is of course important, but on 13 points, the black cats need wins, and plenty of them.

A great win for City in Milan

The game started bad for City with only 9mins on the clock Correia Kleber was given a red card for a dangerous two-footed tackle

but it was the 10 men from Manchester who went ahead with a great chip by Francesco Tavano on 29 mins

just after the break its City who go 2-1 up with a left footed screamer from Max Tonetto

with just 15 mins to go Luís Nani is sent off for aiming a headbutt at Citys Wes Brown

5 mins later its game set and match to City when Max Tonetto slams in he's 2nd and City's 3rd

Re: Gold Championship 7

Top of the league!

Going into tonight's match against Bolton Wanderers, Spurs were on the back of the defeat to Lillestrom. The return of the first-teamers were there to take on top of the league Bolton. Ex-loanee Mladen Petric was replaced by Nery Castillo.

Peter Odemwingie(23') put Bolton ahead before Michael Owen(31') got Spurs back on level terms with a tap-in. Bastian Schweinsteiger(32') took advantage of the poor Bolton defending to capitalize and give Spurs the lead at half-time.

Nery Castillo missed an open goal before Michael Owen(76') extended Spurs' lead as Bolton stopper Jaaskelainen allowed the ball to squirm underneath him. A goal from Chris Burke(85') couldn't prevent Spurs taking the three points.

Michael Owen's two goals and man of the match performance was ironically compared to his move to Bayern Munchen which should be completed tomorrow morning. Carlos Tevez should join Spurs!

And now with a Manchester United defeat, Aston Villa drawing and Chelsea winning, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are tied at the top with 26 points. This is severely contrasted to Spurs' early form last season. May it continue!
