French Shield Round 2:

MONTPELLIER 2-1 RENNES

Montpellier again sent out a second string XI to face tough opponents Rennes away in the 2nd round of the Shield. Keeper Jourdren was given the armband in Barzagli and Mexes' absence, and debuts were given to Naughton, Padoin, and Jiminez

Montpellier struck first after 11 minutes through Padoin, assisted by the in form De Melo. Both sides then had a goal each ruled out offside, with De Melo in particular looking threatening. With 15 minutes to go, CB Hilton scored his 2nd Shield goal in as many games with a powerful header, from a inch perfect Jiminez cross. However, once again the clean sheet eluded us as Totti pulled one back for Rennes with 2 minutes to go, and the match ended 2-1

Another solid performance from Montpellier, who deserved the win. De Melo was named MOTM for the 2nd game running, and again will be hard to drop after another great performance.

OG Nice awaits us in round 3 of the shield, and though we're at home, Nice are 2nd in Ligue 1, so this will be a tough match.

Italian Shield Round 1:

Catania 1 - Palermo 2

Palermo bounced back after a loss in the league to progress to the 2nd Round of the shield after a tricky away trip to Catania. The team was largely second-string, although Clint Dempesy made his first start for the club, whilst newest signing Payet came of the bench. We dominated the game(9 shots on target compared to Catania's 1) and opened the scoring as Bertolo delivered a pinpoint cross, which debutant Utaka lashed home. Then the pressure began to tell on Catania, as they conceded a dreadful own-goal. Unfortunately, against the run of play Catania scored from a counter-attack, but we held on for the victory. The next target for Sach The Gunner is keeping a clean sheet, and the defenders will use training time to gel better.

Palermo Transfer News:

Attacking midfielder Dmitri Payet has been added to give us more creative options in midfield. However, the club parted ways with youngster Labrin and veteran Donati as part of the deal, but this will not affect our squad depth. Everyone at the club wishes Dmitri a successful stay with us!

In other news, Sach The Gunner is intent on bringing in a right-back, with Debuchy and Jonathan reportedly his main targets.

Palermo Injury Update:

The squad was dealt a blow as defensive midfielder Migliaccio hobbled off midway through the game against Catania. He was later diagnosed with a broken toe, and will miss 6-8 weeks. This means he will miss roughly the next 15 league matches, and was a crucial squad member, as he could cover in central defence too. Sach The Gunner has said he will dip into the transfer market to buy a quality centre-back to back up Rodriguez and Silvestre, now that Migliaccio is injured. We all wish Guilio a speedy recovery!

MENDIS TAKES OVER LAZIO

Manager Shavil Mendis today resigned from Montpellier, and instead made his way over to Italy to take up Italian club Lazio. Mendis reportedly had a bust up with the chairman of Montpellier about his stinginess to donate funds for transfers, and hours later, received an offer from Lazio which he accepted immediately

Speaking from Rome today:

It's been a great couple weeks at Montpellier, and i'd like to apologize to the fans, as i was developing a project with them to take them to the top of France. However, i've left the club in a very good position, with a stronger squad. I now look forward to working with Lazio, where we'll aim to finish with a Champions League spot

Lazio are currently in 19th position in the league, and 3rd in their Europa League group, so Mendis will need to quickly change things around if Lazio are going to reach top 4 and progress to the knockouts of Europa
