Great start for Sunderland, Quinn and Philp ecstatic!

Sunderland went into this match having spent around £25m pre-season, and as large underdogs. However, the squad with a few new faces travelled to Anfield and came away with a great win :D

New signings Navas, Zuiverloon, Drenthe and Shishkin all made their Sunderland debuts as all four made Philp's starting XI. Loan signings John Obi Mikel, and Steve Sidwell both started creating a good central midfield partnership for Sunderland, the two players who know each other well from Chelsea.

So to the action, and both teams started well. Xabi Alonso went close for the home team, before Sunderland striker Michael Chopra raced through, only to be denied by goalkeeper Reina. The first goal of the game came 11 minutes in as Liverpool new boy Vicente scored on his debut, pleasing the Anfield crowd, putting the Scousers ahead. Vicente was close to adding a second, as was Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuijt. But just before the break, youngster Kieran Richardson got Sunderland level with a great header on 38 minutes, and missed a glorious chance 6 minutes later(HT 1-1)

The second half was all Sunderland, as their back line stood strong and contributed also, going forwards. Full back Roman Shishkin went close with a free-kick, and missed another two opportunities. Michael Chopra tested Jose Reina on countless occasions, and goalscorer Richardson struck the post. On 67 minutes, Dirk Kuijt scored for the home side, putting them back ahead, and with 20 minutes to go, looked like killing off Sunderland. But the Black Cats fought back, as MOM, on-loan starlet Steve Sidwell scored as the Liverpool defence was nowhere to be seen. Then only 6 minutes after Sidwell put Sunderland level, striker Michael Chopra scored putting the newly-promoted side ahead, as there was antoher defensive mix-up in the Liverpool defence(FT 2-3)

Wigan Athletic 1-2 Birmingham City(Greig Spence)

Chelsea 4-1 Derby County(Kev)

Cardiff City 5-1 Shorpe United(Kev G)

Mixing with the big boys

The team from Birminham are now mixing with the big boys. They started life in the Premier division on saturday night's feature game live on Sky Sports News. Greig Spence's new look team had the worst start possible as Wigan Took the lead after an error from keeper Maik Taylor.

After Some harsh shouts from Spence and assistant Little Spence the blues lifted thier performance and got back on level terms after a thunderous strike from Allesandro Rosina on the 24th minute.

Nikita Bazhenov headed home 6 minutes later and this made the away support jump for joy.

A solid Second half display secured the win and made Spence a happy chappy

We played well today and and i am deligthed with the performance, now we have to look forward to the next game

Re: Relegation Rebels Challenge - EC 388

In the last few minutes, Sunderland boss came out to speak to SMTV in reaction to Greig Spence's big talk:

I think Greig would be better focussing on his team, rather than the others around about him. I am totally focussed on my job here at the Stadium Light, and as long as my boys are doing the business then why should I care how Birmingham get on?

He then reacted to the weekend action:

Well what a win! 3 points away at Anfield, against Liverpool! Couldn't have asked for a better start. The boys have set the standard now, and they must play like that, week in and week out. Obviously Greig missed the score, which is surprising as he usually cares more about everyone else rather than his team!

He responded to a question about on-loan duo Sidwell and Mikel:

Well me and Niall have enquired about keeping them for the whole season. They have really impressed and were fantastic at Anfield on Saturday

He was questioned about tomorrow night's match:

We started with a very tough match, away at Liverpool. We couldn't have had a worse start. But the boys rose to the occasion, and came through for me. Next up tomorrow is Fulham, here at the Stadium of Light. It will be another tough game, but I think we may get the 3 points. I will keep the same team, and the fans will surely be excellent so they will back us right until the end

Philp was then asked about his expectations for the season ahead:

As long as we stay up it will be an achievement. There is no reason why we can't aim higher, as our weekend performance showed that we can mix it with the top teams

Black Cats!

Re: Relegation Rebels Challenge - EC 388

There were less than 50 empty seats, as a near 50,000 crowd jammed into the Black Cats home ground expecting an exciting match, and hopefully 3 points against a reasonable Fulham side..

Ross Philp stuck with the same side that won away at Anfield in the last game, to take on Fulham here, at the Stadium of Light..

Sunderland were confident going into this match, and their pre-match huddle got the fans singing. The action began and it was the away side who started better, Jorgensen and Simon Davies went close for the London side. David Connolly narrowly missed, and just three minutes later, Brian McBride put Fulham ahead with a fantastic header. Defender Zuiverloon, and also Michael Chopra and Keiran Richardson went close, but then Fulham struck again. More misery was heaped on the home side, as Diop scored making it 2-0. And then only seven minutes after that, Jan Koller finished cleverly, as Fulham were in dreamland. Zuiverloon went close again before the break, and Jesus Navas and also Steve Sidwell were foiled by the crossbar(HT 0-3)

After Philp gave the players a rollicking at half-time, the players came out, and boy did they mean business..

Jesus Navas again went close, just before Keiran Richardson won a corner for the home side. John Obi Mikel went over to take the corner, and delivered a high ball to the back post where David Connolly met the ball and headed into the top corner. He rsuhed for the ball and placed it back at the centre spot, just before Jesus Navas floated in a corner as Roman Shishkin headed over. Michael Chopra went close with a lob, and Richardson had a strike cleared off the line, as Sunderland dominated proceedings. Then on 68 minutes, Roman Shiskin bombed up the right and made his way into the box where he got on the end of Keiran Richardson's cross, to convert with a neatly placed header. In the last twenty minutes, Sunderland were pretty quiet as Fulham reverted back to their usual formation and created a few chances(FT 2-3)

Birmingham(Greig Spence) 3-1 Chelsea

Derby County(Kev) 3-5 Tottenham

Bristol City(Paul Thame) 2-2 Cardiff City

Shorpe(Kev G) 0-1 Burnley

Re: Relegation Rebels Challenge - EC 388

English Division 1:Turn 3

Sunderland 0-0 Aston Villa

Not too bad a result here for Ross Philp's men, as they bounced back from a home defeat against Fulham the turn before.

David Connolly had a few good chances in the first half, but couldn't score. At the other end Gabby Agbonlahor and also John Carew looked sharp for the away side.

The second half passed, and after Richardson went close on more than one occasion, and so did Agbonlahor again, the match finished goalless.

English Division 1:Turn 4

Arsenal 0-1 Sunderland

A fantastic three points at the Emirates Stadium took Sunderland into the top ten in the table. After already beating Liverpool at Anfield in front of their huge support, the Sunderland fans that made the trip to London were ecstatic with the win.

Philp kept the same side as he had in the side's previous three matches.

Sidwell had three great chances for Sunderland in the first half, but Robin Van Persie and Mathieu Flamini could've put Arsenal in front.

It was Sunderland who scored first however, and with only ten minutes left on the clock. David Connolly bundled the ball over the line after a goalmouth scramble.

Birminham City Update

B-ham City have had a tremendous season and currently sit 6th and in the quarter final of the Sheild. All signings have had a rating increase and now are performing. We are doing the best off all the promoted sides and loan signings of Adebayor and Dojoru have been instrumental in the push for top half finish.

Re: Relegation Rebels Challenge - EC 388

Sunderland.. So far!

Since the last time you heard from me, my Sunderland had lost away at Portsmouth. Since then, well..

Sunderland 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur.. Drenthe and Richardson with the goals.

Signed Mario Gomez from Stuttgart, made his debut at Chelsea.

Chelsea 1-2 Sunderland.. Richardson again, and Shiskin the full back sealed the win.

Sunderland 1-2 Birmingham City.. Adebayor got a late winner, David Connolly scored.

Defeat Preston in second round of English Cup.

Derby County 1-0 Sunderland.. Gonzalo Higuain got the winner for the struggling Rams.

Sunderland 1-1 Manchester United.. Sidwell gave me the lead, Ronaldinho equalised.

Exit the English Shield after second round defeat to Blackpool, on penalties.

Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Sunderland.. Samba and Santa Cruz, Mikel with consolation.

Sunderland 0-0 Everton.. No goals, creditable draw against a good Everton team.

Lose 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield, thus leaving the English Cup at third round.

West Ham 4-0 Sunderland.. Totti(2), RVN and Vieira scored for the hosts. Dreadful.

Sunderland 0-0 Reading.. Lots of chances, but Gomez not performing.

Mario Gomez is dropped. Won only one game with him here!

Wigan Athletic 1-1 Sunderland.. Chopra replaces Gomez and then scores.

Boro 1-4 Sunderland.. Chopra with a brace. Connolly and Drenthe got a goal each.

Sunderland 1-0 Newcastle.. Keiran Richardson with a second half winner.

Looks like the decision to drop Gomez is working, as I have two wins and a draw since he was left out of the eleven. At the moment I have both my right sided players Navas and Edwards out injured. Halford comes in and replaces them. Edwards is back in five days, and Edwards returns in seven. Halford should fill in no problem, I hope!

6. Birmingham City 30(-1)

10. Sunderland 26(0)

18. Derby County 15(-29)

It's looking good for Birmingham who are flying high, only four points off second place.

Sunderland are only four behind Birmingham, and 11 above the relegation zone.

Derby looking in trouble at the moment, but are only four points from safety for now.

Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 Sunderland

(..) - (..)

It's the twelfth game unbeaten for Ross and his Sunderland who are still very much exceeding pre-season's expectations from chairman Niall Quinn. The expectation of being relegated, and trying to stop it, is now no longer thought off, and it will be a disappointment if we don't finish in the top six.

5. Sunderland 44pts(+5)

7. Birmingham City 42pts(0)

20. Derby County 18pts(-42)

The next four games will be crucial however, here are the fixtures:

Top 6 Is Our's

Greig Spence and his birmingham are the talk of the town. All Over Birmingham Spence's name gets shoutted out as he has took a newly promoted side challanging for ueafa Cup Football.

Spence was questioned at the start of the season after signing a host of young players that lacked quality but now since they have rose his team are fierd by all. In recent matches it hasnt been going so well but the season so far is unbelivble. He hammerd Aston Villa on thier home patch and also Sunderland away and to round it off hammering Chelsea 3-1. Spence is tipped for manager of the year award after what so far is been a tremendoues aheivement a nd has brought B-ham back where they belong

Re: Relegation Rebels Challenge - EC 388

Not long left now, where are B'ham?

With John Obi Mikel back at Chelsea, Russell Anderson and Gianni Zuiverloon injured - now to add Royston Drenthe to that list - it is understandable that Sunderland's form of late has been indifferent, especially since the end of the thirteen match unbeaten run.

After the 0-0 draw with Chelsea, Sunderland travelled to Birmingham as Tomas Galasek scored the only goal of the game to give Birmingham the three points. But in the next match against bottom side Derby County, first half strikes from Kieran Richardson and Jesus Navas sealed a 2-0 win with another clean sheet too.

Ivan Rakitic, Jermaine Jones and Hatem Ben Arfa all moved from abroad as Philp opted for three instead of one - in the form of Karim Benzema. The signings were good young additions and players who will improve sooner rather than later.

But a loss at Old Trafford was suffered next as David Connolly's goal to put Sunderland in the lead was cancelled out by goals from Dion Dublin and Rio Ferdinand strikes late on. Paul McShane and Jesus Navas' goals earned Sunderland a home draw against Blackburn as Benni McCarthy and Gilberto Silva scored.

Two league losses followed, which was unlike Sunderland who were experiencing a poor run of form at late. An Andy Johnson hat-trick meant a 4-2 win for Everton as Sunderland went on their travels. A double from Luis Figo, one goal late on, cancelled out David Connolly's first half goal against leaders West Ham with a 2-1 defeat.

But the optimism returned to the Stadium of Light as Michael Chopra and David Connolly's goals sealed a fine 2-0 away win at Reading. Goals from Connolly, on loan Sidwell, and Michael Chopra too, then gave Sunderland a 3-0 home win against Wigan Athletic. Two wins in a row could see a late up in the table position.

At the moment, Sunderland sit a very respectable sixth position in the league, with the early season objective of avoiding relegation well surpassed. Third is achievable but fifth more likely and well in Sunderland's reach. Games against Middlesbrough and Man City at home with an away match at Newcastle will decide Sunderland and Ross Philp's fate - but all in all, whatever the position, a successful season!!!

Re: Relegation Rebels Challenge - EC 388

Philp extends his contract - and spends big!

Despite a dissapointing end to the season as Sunderland drew three consecutive matches, Ross Philp has extended his deal at the Stadium of Light which will see him take charge of the Black Cats again next season, to help them achieve more.

Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Man City all held Sunderland late on in season one, as Birmingham took advantage and finished above Sunderland in sixth. But seventh for Sunderland was fantastic, above Everton, Arsenal, Villa etc. etc.

And with the prize money for the fantastic league position, Philp spent big in a late night shopping spree yesterday as four new players joined in their push next season for a top six finish. This took Philp's season expenditure to well over £60,000,000.

Juliano Belletti moved from Barcelona for a fee of £3,800,000.

Ryan Babel joined for £4,500,000 and Kieran Richardson moving from Valencia.

Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa moved with Craig Gordon & David Connoly moving to America.

And youngster Joao Moutinho joined as Jesus Navas and Dickson Etuhu left.

The season also saw players such as Jermaine Jones and Mario Gomez join, with future stars Ivan Rakitic, Krkic Bojan, Hatem Ben Arfa, Royston Drenthe, Roman Shiskin and Gianni Zuiverloon moving to the Stadium of Light to play under Philp.

And Philp is still on the lookout for a central midfielder and defender for the Cats, and hopes to tie them up before the season starts next Saturday. Russell Anderson, Royston Drenthe, Michael Chopra, Dean Whitehead, Liam Miller, Carlos Edwards and Ross Wallace have all been told they are free to leave the Stadium of Light, Sunderland.

Re: Relegation Rebels Challenge - EC 388

Schunthrope United 2-2 Portsmouth

' Good result, but they stay in relegation spots '

Good performances from all 4 new signings earn Schunthrope a 3rd draw of the season, hosting Pompey. David BELLION gave the Schunthrope hopeful an early lead after only 1minute. Marc WILSON then equalized for Pompey on the 31st minute, before Cleveland TAYLOR gave the home side the lead again on the 41st miute, but Arnold MUVAMBA equallized 1 minute from half time.

Fellow relegation strugglers Watford lost out to Aston VIlla 1-0, Fulham beat Middlesbrough 2-1, Sunderland narrowly lost out to Man Utd 2-1 and Wigan lost 2-1 to Man City.

Schunthrope stay in relegation by 2 points, Sunderland lie 17th and Toggs looks to climb over them in the table, and hopefully sned Ross, into the relegation spots :).

13 West Ham United 5 1 3 1 11 12 -1 6

14 Everton 5 2 0 3 9 11 -2 6

15 Chelsea 5 1 2 2 6 6 0 5

16 Wigan Athletic 5 1 2 2 8 9 -1 5

17 Sunderland 5 1 2 2 6 8 -2 5

19 Fulham 5 1 0 4 6 11 -5 3

20 Watford 5 0 1 4 3 8 -5 1

To climb above Sunderland, they must get 3 points away to Middlesbrough, which looks a very hard task, and hope Sunderland dont win against Aston Villa. Before that, Shrope travel to Div2 outfit, Leeds United. Toggs expects a good reign in the competition.

Re: Relegation Rebels Challenge - EC 388

Shrope United 4-1 Blackburn Rovers

' Great win for Toggs as they leave relegation '

Toggs side really started to show why they should be in the top division with a 4-1 win against a strong Blackburn side.

The game really didnt start well for Blackburn, after 1 Minute defender Bordon was dismissed for a two-footed challenge. Shrope were stil on the back foot after that, but grabbed a unexpected lead, thanks to veteran Alfred Schuallfer. Toggs side built on that and only 10 minutes later, they doubled their lead through Ian Baraclough. It stayed the same scoreline until half-time.

Shrope returned to the pitch and yet again were against it, but they grabbed another un-expected goal, again through Ian Baraclough. They then made that 4 thanks to Marcus Williams. A half volley from outside of the box went into the top corner. Blackburn defender Vincent Kompany then volleyed in a constallation for Blackburn.

Fellow forumers Ross beat Pompey by one goal, through Ben Arfa, and Grieg's Birningham beat Aston Villa by 3 goals, to 1.

Blackburn Rovers 7 2 2 3 9 12 -3 8

15 Bolton Wanderers 7 2 2 3 5 9 -4 8

16 Aston Villa 7 2 1 4 7 19 -12 7

17 SHORPE UNITED 7 1 3 3 13 16 -3 6

18 Everton 7 2 0 5 11 17 -6 6

19 Fulham 7 1 1 5 10 17 -7 4

20 Watford 7 0 2 5 6 12 -6 2

Midweek, Schunthrope travel to high-flying Liverpool, who are 2nd. Tonight they beat Fulham 4-2. Toggs is confident they will take points from the game.
