After two abysmal league performances, Feyenoord upped their game for the visit of Racing Santander in the quarter finals of the SMFA Shield, it was always going to be a tough game for Feyenoord as Santander boasted stars such as Shevchenko, Pires, Makelele and Beckham in their first team but Feyenoord got through in the end with a 39th minute header from Kevin Hofland.

Feyenoord will now battle it out against Tottenham for a place in the final of the SMFA Shield at the De Kuip.

Ajax 4-0 Werder Bremen

Ajax made ten outfield changes to the side that were held on Wednesday by FC Twente, as they took on Werder Bremen who were on a poor run of form in the German League. The last time these sides met in Group E, Bremen won 2-1 in Germany, with Ajax looking for revenge tonight in the Amsterdam ArenA.

After only three minutes, Garcia Gabri headed just over for the home side as they started the better. Nicolae Mitea saw his lob go just over, while he then had a header go just too high as well. Defender Thomas Vermaelen went through one on one but his shot came off the post, before Garcia Roger missed a great chance to open the scoring. Mitea went close once again before Luca Toni showed a small sign of intent at the other end for the visitors.

Jurgen Colin opened the scoring on 50 minutes, as he thumped in a low drive from 20 yards out. And only one minute later and Ajax were further ahead as Alberto Luque bundled the ball over the line after a goalmouth scramble. Tim Wiese then saved twice as Ajax pounded the pressure on the Bremen back line, before they then decided to try and score as they previously looked to simply defend. And on 75 minutes, their woes were extended as Nicolae Mitea rounded the keeper to finish with simple ease to make it four. And the rout was completed six minutes from time when Garcia Roger darted past the defender before driving the ball into the net.

Before the match, a place in the last sixteen for Ajax looked highly unlikely, but a win against Fenerbahce in Turkey in a weeks time will see the Dutch side progress. Philp and Ajax face Heerenveen, who are currently second in the league, tomorrow night as the first eleven will see ten changes from tonight's match.

Two forumers; top of the pile!

Ajax travelled away to second placed Heerenveen tonight, looking to continue on from the thumping they handed out to Werder Bremen last night. Ten changes were made, as Ajax went all out for the win!

Cassiol Lincoln took his goal tally to 12 in 14 matches with an excellent finish after 59 minutes. And Dutch supremo, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar added a second on 75 minutes to give Ajax the three points.

Ajax stayed top and moved onto 37 points for the campaign, and are closely followed by George's FC Twente who are only two points behind. Feyenoord are equal on points with Twente, with Heerenveen two further back.

Defender joins!

180.gif

After scouring the transfer market at the tail end of Christmas day, Ajax boss Ross Philp made a bid for Ghanaian defender John Mensah. The 25 year old joined Dutch giants Ajax this morning from Rennes for a fee of £7,800,000.

th_sm_WCBJS220606917.jpg

Ajax boss said this morning: "John is a good talent and at his age he is at a great point in his career where he is experienced to play at any level. He will make his debut tonight against Gent, as I play my weakened side. But John is not part of my second string, he is more likely to feature in the first team more often than not".

Feyenoord won 2-1 at home to FC Groningen tonight to go 1st in the league for the first time this season, Feyenoord got off to a great start in this game by taking the lead 2 minutes in with a strike from midfielder Charles Aranguiz and then there was a moment of madness in the 20th minute by FC Groningen's Rasmus Lindgren who made a shocking tackle and was rightly red carded for it, only five minutes after that Feyenoord scored there second goal as veteran striker Michael Mols scored a poachers goal, The last ten minutes was nervous for Feyenoord as Erik Nevland pulled one back for ten man FC Groningen but Feyenoord saw out the game to take all three points.

Feyenoord reached top of the league tonight because of a shock result in Amsterdam, Ajax lost 3-0 at home to Gent as they put out there second string side so they can concentrate on qualifying for the next round of the SMFA Champions Cup and FC Twente who were second before tonight also lost against Anderlecht in what was a slight shock as is the great turnaround in fortunes of this club since GeorgeECFC took over.

CSKA Show Ukranians how to play the beautiful game !

CSKA-Moscow.png

Shakhtar Donetsk 2 - 6 CSKA Moskva

Manager Adam Johnson is confident in his players ability, but im sure even he didnt believe that his side could pull of such a win against the biggest Ukrainian team, on their soil.

Johnson named a fully fit starting 11, Johnson set his tactics to attacking and wanted to take the game to Shaktar. His side certainly did that, at the final whistle CSKA had over 60% possession and an amazing, 46, yes thats 46 shots against their opponents.

The rout started in the first minute, Dudu scored a brilliant strike after a foraging run through the Shaktar defensive line. This sparked off the songs from the traveling fans that were never to become silent.

12 minutes later, Love got his first of three goals, The brazilian ace shot from an acute angle which was deflected into the goal, However he could claim it and in his eyes a goal is a goal. In the 25th minute he got his brace when he headed home a superb cross from the right.

Dudu also got a brace, he had to wait till the 31st minute, again he scored an impressive, powerful header. Shaktar did grab one before half time making the sides go in at 1-4.

The first 20 odd minutes of the second half were quiet, Until the 70th minute where Shaktar were given a glimmer of hope when they scored a second. Painfully for their fans this wasnt the case as two minutes later Jo showed how dangerous CSKA were from set pieces and crosses when he scored CSKA's third header of the game.

Love had to wait till the 88th minute to win the match ball, the striker skipped passed his markers and fired in a shot from 25 yards. This result gives a ever growing CSKA confidence which they will hopefully take forward and use.

MoM obviously went to Hattrick hero Vagner Love.

SERIE A NEWS

- Lazio appoint Tony.

With most of Rome still shocked with Tom's resignation, Tony Baldo's arrival should also cause a few debates among the Lazio fans, whether it was the right decision from the Chairman or not, will soon be answered. It is clear though that Tony has a great squad to work with but 7th place isn't satisfactory.

Tony told Gazzetta Dello Sport, "Coming midway through the season won't really help me, especially when my first game in charge is probably the biggest game this season. However, I'm confident in the players, I won't be making any signings but I will be changing the line-up."

7236.jpg

(Already been awarded captaincy.)

Tony continued to say, " I'm a bit shocked about why such a weak XI was played in the Champs Cup but we'll do our best to qualify. There are some exceptional players at the club but forming a team feared by the whole of Europe is my true aim."

SMFA Shield Semi Final

192.gifFeyenoord 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur80.gif

Scorers

Aiyegbeni Yakubu (Feyenoord), 5 mins

Andwele Slory (Feyenoord), 13 mins

Jonathan De Guzman (Feyenoord), 74 mins

Feyenoord reached the final of the SMFA Shield with a great 3-0 result against Tottenham at the De Kuip, the game was much closer than the result suggests with the shots and possession almost even from both sides but it was Feyenoord's clinical finishing that saw them through.

The first goal came in the fifth minute with Nigerian Aiyegbeni Yakubu spectacularly scoring with an overhead kick and the second came only eight minutes later when Andwele Slory thumped the ball into the net, with approximately fifteen minutes left Feyenoord sealed the game with their third goal and it came from young Canadian Jonathan De Guzman to seal a memorable night for Feyenoord.

The Feyenoord players should be proud of themselves as they all put in strong performances with four players getting a match rating of nine and five players getting a match rating of eight and thanks to those performances they will now face Argentinian side River Plate in the final on January the fourth.
