Celtic 2 - 2 Steaua Bucureşti

Steaua Progress From Group!

Steaua's second string were denied an unlikely win as Celtic struck twice late on, in a game of little importance. Whatever the result, both teams were guaranteed progression, with Celtic going through as group winners. Juan Culio capitalised on a defensive error to give Steaua the lead in the first half, before Gueye doubled the lead from 15 yards. However two goals in two minutes from Hunt and Polanski meant the match ended in a draw. Celtic now face Panathinaikos and Steaua face Juventus.

SMFA Preview:

379_1192158033.gifVs. 110_1227090196.jpg

Steaua have progressed from the group stage from the first time and have arguably been given one of the hardest draws possible in four time Italian champions, Juventus. Steaua will also be without new signing L. Acosta who is cup tied, so N. Dica is believed to be favourate to take his place. This is indeed a battle Italy and Central Europe's biggest teams with a combined 14 cups between them (7 each). Juventus go into the game favourate, but anything can happen in football, right?

Juventus 1 - 4 Steaua Bucureşti

Steaua Take Shock Advantage

Steaua Bucureşti pulled off the shock result of the first leg in tonight's SMFA Cup Round 1 fixtures as they triumphed in Turin, over a second string Juve, to send the small contingent of away fans home overjoyed and the homes fans in a state of shock.

Steaua were quick out the blocks with Gonzalo Bergessio turning on 3mins to fire home, before Bergessio produced a great solo effort to double the lead on 21mins. Cassano pulled one back just before half time to suggest a second half comeback was possible.

Juve were in more trouble after the break as Molinaro received a second yellow and three minutes later Karamyan restored Steaua's two goal cushion. However a glimmer of hope returned as two goal hero Bergessio was also sent off, before Kovac scored a very late goal which may prove vital.

Manager, Chris Lewis stated, 'This is a wonderful result for the club as a whole, but as everyone says, this is only half time, and i cannot imagine a second string team being fielded in the second leg like tonight.'

Tavey Takes The Hotseat At Wolfsburg

Today Wolfsburg have confirmed Tavey as their new manager. This news comes to a shock to everyone. Wolfsburg were expected to let the caretaker take care of the squad until next season. When the news broke out on Sky Sports News, excited fans crowded the streets of around the stadium to catch a glimpse of Tavey. This is what the spokeman for the club had to say, "We are all obviously delighted with the appointment of Tavey. He is a very experienced and successful manager and will hopefully bring success back to the club after what has been a very disappointing time for the club, we are currently 15th which is not near good enough."

An excited Tavey had this to say, "I'm delighted to be here. This is a great club, with a great mentality and great fans. The squad however, needs to be improved before we can go any further. We have great players here but from what I've seen from matches earlier this season, we lack quality in certain areas of the pitch and I will look to bring in new players in the coming weeks."

Tavey has brought some back room staff with him, including Rafael Benitez's former assistant manager Paco Ayesteran. Paco will become Tavey's number two. Tavey had this to say, "Paco is very experienced. Hes a great man and a close friend. I won't bring success to Wolfsburg, WE WILL BRING SUCCESS TO WOLFSBURG"

Traveling Fans Go Home Happy

Steaua fans had due reason to celebrate tonight's result as a run three unbeaten has seen their team return to the top of the table as rivals continue to slip up. After setting the early pace, domestic and SMFA cup games seemed to have taken their effect on the squad as draws became common place. Steaua are now top with a substantially superior goal difference to second place Mlada Boleslav.

Bergessio grabbed the first tonight on 4mins with a great solo effort, before Pavlyuchenko's tenth of the season made it two on 9 mins with a superb volley. However, Agouda pulled one back before half time, with a great overhead kick. After half time, Luis Mario sent the home crowd wild with an equaliser just before an hour, but Karamyan grabbed the winner on 66mins with a header, after a cross from the right. The result leaves Steaua top with seven games remaining.

Red Bull Salzburg 1 - 3 Steaua Bucuresti

0304derbikup5sx6.jpg

Steaua To Retain Title?

With four games remaining, Steaua Bucuresti are five points clear at the top of the Central European League and are on the verge of becoming the first side to retain the title. Pavlyuchenko claimed the first goal on 6mins from an acute angle, before he turned on 21mins to put Steaua 2-0 up at half time. Salzburg pulled a goal back around the hour mark, before Kante added a third on 75mins after Kome was sent off.

This result means Steaua have hit top form at the perfect time as this is the third win in three games. The first being a 1-0 win over Slovan Liberac and the second, an away day 5-0 battering of then second place Mlada Boleslav. The only minor blip is the loss of L. Acosta for the rest of the season, so manager Chris Lewis will hope for a return to form of former captain N. Dica for the climax of the season.

Wisla Kraków fall short at last hurdle

The last remaining round of league fixtures came down to Wisla Kraków v Dynamo Kyiv with the winner to claim 4th position on the league, the loser to miss SMFA competition. Wisla had a good run towards the tail end of the season only losing 1 fixture in the last 10 league matches. Dynamo Kyiv on the other hand had lost 7 league fixtures from the last 10 matches.

FK Austria Wien 1 - 0 Steaua Bucuresti

456366_BIGLANDSCAPE.jpg

Steaua Claim Third Title

Despite an away day defeat on the last day, it couldn't stop the Steaua Bucuresti party. Two games prior to this match, Steaua and manager Chris Lewis, knew they had made history, becoming the first team to retain the Central European League title. In the last two games, with the league secure, Lewis fielded second string sides to allow more members of the squad to become eligible for league winners medals. After disapointment in the first knockout round of the SMFA Cup, Steaua were still second behind Mlada Boleslav, but a run of just one defeat in their last ten games, saw them rise back to the top and claim the title.

picture.php?albumid=38&pictureid=193

Lewis also singled out Roman Pavlyuchenko, for a brilliant end to the season, which saw him become the club's leading scorer.

'He had a disappointing start to the season, but he showed his class and retained his leading scorer award from season 2.' Praise was also given to veteran Niko Kovac who has announced that he will retire and loan signings David Weir and Aly Cissokho. 'To be able to compete in so many competitions, you need a great squad and that is what is starting to emerge here. At the age of 37, Niko gave us 34 top performances over two seasons, and on behalf of the fans I would like to thank him for his services,'

This seasons total of 71pts is the lowest ever points total for a side that has gone on to win the title. Previously, Steaua have achieved 86pts (Season 1), 88pts (Season 4) and even 81pts (Season 3) when the side finished 2nd. This seasons total is only 2pts higher than when the side came 3rd (lowest ever finish) in Season 2. Manager, Chris Lewis, refused to comment as to whether this was his greatest season at the club, which saw the side win the first ever Charity Shield, the Domestic Shield and then lifting the league trophy on his birthday, but targeted a crusade for all four domestic trophies along with even further progression in the SMFA Cup next season.

CSKA secure back to back titles

Johnsons team secured the title on the last day of the season by beating Krylia Sovetov, If it was not for a defeat in the 37th fixture this season, Johnson could of had the title wrapped up a game before.

Johnsons CSKA has changed slightly from the title winning squad of last season, Hulk & Chamakh are the most high profile players to join, a partnership which Johnson hopes will blossom. French sensation Gourcuff, and club captain has had heep piled on him by Johnson for the way he influenced this seasons title charge after a mediocre start to the league.

Steaua Bucureşti 2 - 0 SK Austria Kärnten

Bergessio.jpg

Charity Shield Stays in Bucharest

Two early goals from Gonzalo Bergessio (pictured) were enough for Steaua to remain the only side to have held the Charity Shield. Both goals can be seen as fortunate, but acted as a hammer blow to the opponenets SK. The first on 5mins came after a shot from an acute angle was deflected past the keeper, and then seconds later, a back pass fell short for Bergessio to double the lead.

The result suggests that the Central European Champions have continued their form from the end of last season, which will be needed if they are to mount a challenge on all fronts this season. However, manager, Chris Lewis is confident in the strength of his squad, days after announcing the signature of young Ukrainian striker, Yevhen Selezniov who impressed on loan last season, along with a rapidly improving youth squad. It is hoped that this new crop of players will be ready for when the current squad reach the end of their time at the club.

Possible Future Line-up:

Anotolovic (20)

Paun (20) - Acka (19) - Vernydub (21) - Ivanov (21)

Gonzaléz (21)

Lamela (17) - Niklitsiotis (18) - Bottinelli (22)

Acosta (21) - Selezniov (24)

Dinamo Bucuresti 2 - 7 Steaua Bucuresti

08-05-2009--Steaua-Dinamo-023a.jpg

Steaua Destroy Rivals Dinamo

Champions Steaua Bucuresti stormed to an emphatic five goal victory in the first Bucharest derby of the season. It is the biggest derby day victory over Dinamo in history, and the nine goal thriller equals the 9-0 demolition of other major rivals Rapid, as the highest scoring game in the club's history.

The deadlock was broken on 19mins when the home side took the lead through Ronald Garcia. This seemed to spark Steaua into life, as 3mins later Roman Pavlyuchenko pounced on a defensive error to equalise. This was followed by new signing, Shaun Maloney, claiming his first goal for the club after another defensive mix-up, leaving the score as 2-1 at half time. After half time, Pavlyuchenko and Maloney each grabbed a second, before Bergessio added a fifth on 75mins. On 79mins, Zicu grabbed a consolation for the home side, but this was soon forgotten as Pavlyuchenko added two more late on, to take his tally to four, and Steaua's to seven. Manager Chris Lewis hailed the result as one of the best so far, and praised the start his side have made to the season, with them sitting top form day one, with a +16 goal difference after just six league games; and unbeaten from the ten games played so far.

I've quit Pachuca to become the new Hamburg manager :). My first game is Chelsea in that Champions League style competition. I did quite well at Pachuca for the time I was there, I won one of those domestic cup competitions and got them into europe and this season there sitting 4th. Its not bad for the team they have. But I couldn't refuse this offer, it was too good to turn down :o

Aston Villa have a greed a deal with Benfica to bring in Gabriel CRISTIAN RODRIGUEZ, the 90 rated LM/Wing. The cost of this deal is £5 million plus Edgar CASTILLO, the 88 rated LB/LM (Edgar CASTILLO in the real world is currently on loan from Club America at Tigres, and doing rather well).

Aston Villa are very happy with this deal but are sad to see Edgar CASTILLO leave as he is a promising future talent, but squad depth means that Danijel PRANJIC can fill in at LB if required.

Benfica were desperate for a LB as they only currently have Lourenço LEO, who is 34 and rated 87.

NEWS FROM BAYERN MÜNCHEN

"The salatschüssel is at home again"

90805090.jpg.9174.0_feature.jpg

After last season's quite weak league performance, Mr HoW's side won the Bundesliga again with 6 points ahead of rival Borussia Dortmund. "The salatschüssel is at home again. We really owe our fans with this. We made a tremendous running at the second half of the season, and we were able to win almost all of our matches, and with this performance, I think we really deserve this title." said Mr HoW. With 7 trophies so far, the board of directors are very satisfied with the managers performance, who has been at München for 6 seasons.

Over 100 goals again

Bayern's attacking side were excellent again with 105 goals, mainly thanks to Croatian midfielder, Luka Modric, who got the golden boot this season with 26 goals. Lukas Podolski and Franck Ribéry are on the elite list too with 18-18 goals, and Miro Klose with 17 this season.

Luka Modric, this season's top goalscorer

"No dissapointment"

Franck Ribéry, Bayern's biggest star is happy with the title. "You cant win allways everything. We won two Champions League title so far, Europe knows us well. I would like to say, despite the rumours, I'm very happy at Bayern, and would like to stay here. Moving to somewhere else is not an option for me. We must and we will improve as we allways did, I have no worries for the next season."

Its only possible to get 36 from 12 games . . . are you going by manager points ?

Anyway CSKA win the league and lose on the last day of the season to miss out on what would of been a undefeated league campaign :( very sour end to a succesful season.

Gourcuff can leave if its a special offer :)

Steaua Bucureşti 4 - 0 BSC Young Boys

banel3939.jpg

Steaua Complete Treble & Third Consecutive Title

A brace from Guinzau and goals from Bergessio and Nicolita (pictured) handed Steaua their second domestic treble, five seasons after claiming their first; with victory in the Central European Cup. This result followed a tense Central European Shield final, which Steaua won on penalties against Slavia Praha. Bucureşti also won the Charity Shield at the beginning of the season for the second consecutive time, with a 2-0 victory over SK Austria Kärnten.

This treble marks an historic season in Central Europe as Steaua become the first side to claim three consecutive league titles and also the only team to complete the treble once, let alone twice.

Manager Chris Lewis hailed his squad as 'truly magnificent throughout the whole season,' which resulted in Steaua claiming the title with eight games to go and a record points total of 95 points and just three defeats. This can be explained by the fantastic form of Steaua's strike force, which reached 104 league goals, with Bergessio grabbing 28 goals and Pavlyuchenko claiming 26 goals in all competitions.

This has been described as the greatest season so far under Lewis, but the quest for European glory still eludes them.
