Top 100 Players Ever: The Association of Football Statisticians

Recommended Posts

Everybody likes a controversial set of "best-ever" stats to get their teeth stuck into and you can bet The Association of Football Statisticians have been getting their fair share of dissenters following this latest Top 100 footballers survey.

The AFS have tried to prove who is the greatest ever player by analysing every football fact and figure over the last 100 years.

top.jpg

Missing in action: Denis Law, Bobby Moore and George Best have all failed to make the Association of Football Statisticians list

The results are fascinating, if a little perplexing, with England's right-back Gary Neville rated the 86th greatest.... ever.

Pele is No 1. No surprise there, but you might imagine Diego Maradona, who many feel to be the finest footballer ever to grace a pitch, to be a close second.

Not so, according to these statos. Ronaldo, Romario, Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane make up the top five, with the diminutive Argentinian relegated to sixth.

And what of Eusebio, Ferenc Puskas, Johann Cruyff or Alfredo di Stefano? Surely these four legends of the game would make a top 10? Well, not quite. In fact only Eusebio (19) makes it into the teens, and only just. The others come in at a respectable 20, 21 and 22.

Apparently the list gives points for goals scored by forwards and clean sheets for defenders. Players also get awarded for cups won, being captain and the level they played at.

Take note of this final point because it explains the glaring omission of one George Best. In fact, there are a few Man Utd players hard done by with Denis Law and Eric Cantona also conspicuous by their absence.

However, most baffling of all must be the name of Jon Dahl Tomasson at No 82, with Neville not too far behind.

The highest-placed Englishman is Bobby Charlton at 23, with David Beckham at 44, Kevin Keegan 46, Gary Lineker 56 and Michael Owen 63 - but no Alan Shearer.

But surely Bobby Moore, England's greatest central defender and a World Cup winner, must be in there somewhere. See for yourself, but the answer is no...

Re: Top 100 Players Ever: The Association of Football Statisticians

This was in the sun wasn't it. I remember being at school at the time as 1 of my mates always buys the sun so we can have a look at the 'Headlines', and we had a huge debate over who Ali Daei is as i ahd personally never heard of the gut but he was once the most prolific striker for his country or something along them lines and the we argued whether pele or ronaldinho was better and IMO it has got to be pele.:)

Re: Top 100 Players Ever: The Association of Football Statisticians

Ya there good Picks' date=' Im sure they will be a few more then we can get stats ect & videos and make our choices.[/quote']

Thanks, but I also find that I had to cross out a few great goalies like Buffon to complete the list.

In the list of AFS, there is Barthez and all those kinds of terrible players!

Jose Luis Chilavert, also remember Rogerio Ceni does this also.

Let's not forget Jorge Campos! Not a great keeper but he was the mexican who designed all his own keepr tops etc. Like this:
