Feyenoord and Atletico Madrid will meet at De Kuip after both sides endured a 0-0 opener. Both teams had super cagey and even opening matches and will be looking to put runs, and goals, on the board. moukandjou will be expected to score for Feyenoord, whilst Ighalo and Matias Suarez will be expected to produce something for expectant fans in front of goal for Atletico.

Round Two -

Sunderland will be at the Stadium of Light for the visit of Hanover and both sides will be looking to improve on the single point from their first round games. Both managers have their teams progressing well. Expecting a home win here.
Feyenoord will play host to Atletico who notoriously do not travel well. Another home win here although I have probably jinxed Feyenoord with this call.
Ajax will face Frankfurt at the Real Life stadium in waht are expected to be rainy conditions. This will suit Defoe who will take advantage of slips with pace and guile. Away win is on the cards here.

Seattle will travel to Stuttgart who failed in their first round. Seattle have a potent strike force that may be too much for the hosts. If they can cope with the attacking players from the US side, Stuttgart can get a result but defensively they will need to be on the ball.
The Celts will be hoping that the gods smile on them after they played well in their first game but walked away with nothing as they travel across the water to Paris. Gutierrez scored two in his first game but is not known as a prolific scorer...even so the Scots will struggle against  team that scored 3 in the first round. The fact that they also conceded three means PSG need to improve defensively and the visitors will be looking to play tight and hit PSG on the break.
Berlin make the short trip to cologne for an all German affair. Kranavitter was inspiring in the first game and Cologne will be looking for another similar performance. If he can produce it I think Berliin will struggle to get a point from this game.
Newcastle will receive a visit from Club America. Both teams won their first matches so this one shapes to be the game of the round. What will be most interesting here is how well the Mexicans travel and whether or not Newcastle can avoid there notorious inconsistency. This one may well be a very even game with a draw the expected result.
Finally the blue side of Manchester take the journey to China. Guangzhou lost their first game but City only managed a draw so this also could be an even affair. City will be looking for Cambiasso to be the midfield general as he was in the first game but they will have to be sharper around the goal. This one looks like a draw as well but if the home team can lift from their first game they could keep the points in the bag.

Good luck to you all.

Stuttgart, Lord Bendtner says he wants to give you a fair chance so he won't be playing tonight.

If you plan on using him against me, just lemme know in advance, so I can tell my lads to stay home and take the 3-0 "no-show" loss.

It sure beats being slaughtered by the Lord.

Which poilce station is he in tonite?

If that's some sort of referrence, I'm too ignorant to get it.  :(

PS: top notch write-ups, Gordon!

PREDICTION: Sunderland will be at the Stadium of Light for the visit of Hanover and both sides will be looking to improve on the single point from their first round games. Both managers have their teams progressing well. Expecting a home win here. - ONE UP FOR ME!!!!

Man of the Match Camarasa set the scene in this game forcing a big early save from Adrian in the 10th minute. The keeper got both hands on the ball to a low shot. 5 minutes later a foul 23 yards out saw Camarasa take full advantage of a bad defensive error when the ball went straight through the wall and into the net. Although Sunderland were the better side on the day they did not boss the game however they certainly left the game wwith the points and left Hanover with lots to do on the training ground before their next game. The upside was that with a couple of tactical tweaks Hanover did finish stronger as Sunderland began to sit in to hold the lead with Butlans stranded in the 65th minute to a ball that slid wide and making a brilliant save from Vazquez with only 10 minutes remaining. Final Score 1-0

PREDICTION: Feyenoord will play host to Atletico who notoriously do not travel well. Another home win here although I have probably jinxed Feyenoord with this call. - TWO UP FOR ME!!!

As predicted Atletico again came to grief on the road despite the protestations of their manager who suggested I was taking drugs to predict this result :) . The first half was a boring affair with both teams unwilling to open up. The only shining light was the work of midfielder Cork who showed plenty of energy and resolve to eventually win the MOTM award. It was not really a surprise therefore that Cork himself opened the scoring after receiving a pass from Reyes out of defence, turning and making 15 yards unchallenged in his approach to the goal before curling a shot that crept just inside the post past the despairing dive of ADAN. Despite several substitutions neither team could do much more although Germain had a great chance about 155 minutes from time that went high, wide and not so handsome.  Final Score 1-0

PREDICTION: Ajax will face Frankfurt at the Real Life stadium in waht are expected to be rainy conditions. This will suit Defoe who will take advantage of slips with pace and guile. Away win is on the cards here. - OOOPS!!! that makes it 2-1

Although my prediction was wrong with Ajax having a good win it was not that comfortable...and it was Defoe that scored for Frankfurt. Ajax had slightly more of the possession with on target shots 5 - 4 to the home team and corners 7-5. There were two major differences in the teams. The first was in goal where Aussie Matt Ryan looks like a shrewd pickup by Manager LauraV but Sportiello in the visitors goal looked anything but safe and solid...the term hesitant springs to mind.  Maksimovic opened the score on the half hour when a great dummy run bu Origi pulled the defense open and allowed Correa to silp the ball to Maksimovic at the top of the box to curl it past the keeper. only one minute late Origi himself drilled a through-ball from Suarez past the goal keeper who was slow to respond. In the 37th minute the ever dangerous Alli found Defoe loose in the box and he did what he does and slotted it past Ryan who got a hand to it but could not keep it out. when they came out for the second half Ajax were happy to conceded territory to Eintracht and hit them on the break and in the 76th minute one of those fast breaks saw  Suarez with assist again as he found Telles who slid one in beside the post. Some rethinking needed by Manager Closer before the next game. Final Score 3-1

150x_Stuttgart_FC.jpg                    V                     150x_Seattle_Sounders_FC.jpg

PREDICTION: Seattle will travel to Stuttgart who failed in their first round. Seattle have a potent strike force that may be too much for the hosts. If they can cope with the attacking players from the US side, Stuttgart can get a result but defensively they will need to be on the ball. 3-1!!

Stuttgart fought really hard in this game and an unusual setup by manager KJKJ gave the visitors something to think about. A close game, where as predicted, the home team could simply not contain the Seattle Strike force for 90 minutes. With scores level at half time Stuttgart were not switched on as the second half kicked off, maybe due to the half time substitutions, but a poor pass was intercepted by Januzaj which saw the wing man skip past a defender and put an early cross to the feet of Tolisso who caught the keeper off balance and the score was 1-0. The Sounders were VERY lucky only a few moments later when Mbemba found Oliviera unmarked just outside the box and he floated it past the keeper only to be ruled offside. Replays show it as a VERY tight decision. Tolisso was more and more involved in the game in the second half which earned him the MOTM award. Final Score - 0-1

150x_psg.jpg                     V                    150x_Celtic.jpg

PREDICTION: The Celts will be hoping that the gods smile on them after they played well in their first game but walked away with nothing as they travel across the water to Paris. Gutierrez scored two in his first game but is not known as a prolific scorer...even so the Scots will struggle against  team that scored 3 in the first round. The fact that they also conceded three means PSG need to improve defensively and the visitors will be looking to play tight and hit PSG on the break. 4-1!!!

The Scots did play well as they did in the first game and got the reward and PSG again showed they can score goals OK but the defense is suspect having now shipped 6 goals in two games. In honesty it was a very close match with MOTM Pienaar proving he still has some magic in his feet with two goals and the assist on the third. In a seesawing game Celtic took the lead in the 20th minute when Pienaar scored with a curling free kick from 25 yards that ZOET could not reach but only 8 minutes later Marin found Risse with a great through ball that the right sided midfielder slid home perfectly...Celtic, mainly through Pienaar, put huge pressure on the PSG goal but they stayed strong - half time 1-1.

5 minutes into the second half Pienaar became the supplier and PSG became the latest team to realise that leaving Roy Keane unmarked in the 6 yard box is a bad idea. However the lesson was hard learned, 2 minutes later Kirchhoff found Keane again in space and again he found the back of the net only to be ruled offside. IN the 69th Minute Elia linked onto a pass from Marin who was very creative for the home side to level the scores but Pienaar repeated his first half strike to score from another free kick with just three minutes on the clock after a silly foul given away in the wrong area by the PSG defense. Final Score 2-3

PREDICTION: Berlin make the short trip to cologne for an all German affair. Kranavitter was inspiring in the first game and Cologne will be looking for another similar performance. If he can produce it I think Berliin will struggle to get a point from this game. 4-2!!!

Well basically Kranavitter failed to have any kind of impact on this game...in fact the entire Cologne failed to do it. Niasse for Berlin go the MOTM award for his general play and one assist and Cardona was probably unlucky not to get it. The two of them bewildered Cologne all game and Joel Campbell tucked the ball in the twice to seal the deal. The game got off to a really bad start for Cologne, conceding their first goal in the first minute and it is often tough to come back from there. Both sides played a 4-2-3-1 formation but the Cologne midfield could not cope with the tough tactics of the Berlin midfield. Berlin received three yellow cards for their hard tackling. Both Cardona and Vainquer were booked for challenges on Kranavitter who simply had no time on the ball and Manager David Moyes will need to come up with a plan B if his side are to enjoy more success this season. Final Score 0-2

PREDICTION: Newcastle will receive a visit from Club America. Both teams won their first matches so this one shapes to be the game of the round. What will be most interesting here is how well the Mexicans travel and whether or not Newcastle can avoid there notorious inconsistency. This one may well be a very even game with a draw the expected result. 4-3!!

Manager Matthew Webb will have every reason to be disappointed with the outcome. With almost 60% possession and 6 shots to 2 on target the result should have been much closer. In fact without an impeccable MOTM performance from the Club America 'Keeper and a poor one from Rico in the Geordie goal...the result could well have gone the other way. CA only got two shots on target all game...The first in the 8the minute when Janssen found Cheryshev with a through ball and failed to close down the Russian who just blasted it past him and the second the second in the 38th minute when Janssen again was the supplier this time to Melgarejo which Rico got a hand to and really should have done better with. Tatarusanu at the other end seemed imperious. Whatever was fired at him was stopped or parried away in a dazzling display of shot stopping that must have really frustrated a Newcastle team that seemed to everything right but score. Final Score 0-2

150x_Guangzhou-Evergrande.jpg                    V                    150x_Manchester-City.jpg

PREDICTION: Finally the blue side of Manchester take the journey to China. 4-4!!

Well...I thought it might be close - NOT SO! City attacked down the left side at will with Baba and Cambiasso (again) the major providers. Guangzhou held their own for large parts of the game but the defensive effort from City was such that even shots that were on target lacked venom. At the other end City notched up 4 from 5 attempts on target with Guangzhou keeper Sels not really at fault with any of them. It was in two short spells, one in each half, that City one the game. The first was either side of half time when Deeney slotted home in 41st minute from a Cambiasso free kick and then Brandt just 6 minutes later game time as the second half got under way. The second was the 74th and 77th minutes when first Baba found Mina with a cutting ball through the defense and he slotted home and just three minutes later Cambiasso scored from a free kick with a shot that was almost unstoppable into the top corner. Guangzhou tried hard towards the end as City took the foot off the pedal a bit and there were some great saves from Rulli in the City goal but this was a decisive win to Manchester City and manager Noisy will be well pleased with thei performance. Final Score 0-4

Match Day 3 -

Match one sees Feyenoord hosting Sunderland at the De kuip Stadium in Rotterdam - evenly matched teams sitting 6th and 5th in the league in these early rounds. Camarasa is the linchpin for the visitors. Keeping him under control is the #1 task for the Dutchmen. If they cannot do this Sunderland to win.
Hanover travel to Ajax this week. Ajax manager LauraV has her squad ticking nicely at the moment with Telles and Maksimovic a real threat down the left. Hanover is not faring so well with Caio's team yet to register a goal. Ajax to take the points here.
Atletico Madrid travel to Stuttgart as another team that has failed to find the net so far this season and will feel the loss of Paulista at the back who is out with a groin strain. Both teams will be looking for points to move out of the cellar. Forecasting an away win here as I feel Manager KJKJ is still settling in at Stuttgart following the exit of his predecessor ...but it should be a very tight game.
Frankfurt travel to PSG with a one win one loss record. Both teams are shipping goals with PSG conceding 6 and Frankfurt 4 in two games. With Marin and Delli Alle the providers for their respective teams an open game will certainly produce an exciting and high scoring game.. Looks like a high scoring draw for me this time around.
Seattle will be hosted by Cologne having stayed in Germany after their match with Stuttgart in the previous round rather than have the big flight round trip. Cologne were stymied in the last game by the stiff tackling on playmaker Kranavitta and I am sure Seattle will try to do the same. Seattle will be without Foket who has a shoulder injury which will likely see Jara as his replacement. I expect the Sounders to be too strong for the hosts but the week long stay away from home may affect them. In the end a close game with Sounders to scrape home.
Newcastle will welcome Celtic to St James Park. Newcastle will be looking to make a good impression after an unlucky result in their last game while Celtic will be looking to build on a great win at PSG. Lustenberger will be missing at the back for Newcastle which will probably mean Keane will come in to replace him. This should be a top game and in the end I think it will finish level.
Guangzhou welcome Berlin to the Tianhe stadium where manager Gozzy has some work to do with his defense which has leaked 7 goals in just two games. To make it worse 2 of their defenders will be out...probably for two matches...so trying to settle the defensive group will be even more difficult. Dendoncker should get a start with most pundits a bit bit surprised he has not made an appearance before this with maybe Elvedi to also com in on the right side although Antonio could also fill that role. Still it will be difficult for the home side to get it together I feel and Berlin should notch their second win of the season.
The only 100% team in the league, Club America, will go under the microscope today as first play second in the Match of the Round. Both teams are scoring well with 5 each in two games and City have conceded only 1. Sanches will be out of the midfield for CA and will possibly be replaced by NDONG. Club America keeper Tatarusanu is in sparkling form at the moment but the attacking prowess of Cambiasso, Mina and Brandt will mean he will have to be. I think City have the edge here and should take the points but only by the odd goal.

Prediction: Match one sees Feyenoord hosting Sunderland at the De kuip Stadium in Rotterdam - evenly matched teams sitting 6th and 5th in the league in these early rounds. Camarasa is the linchpin for the visitors. Keeping him under control is the #1 task for the Dutchmen. If they cannot do this Sunderland to win. 0-1

Well this is a little confusing but I suppose I have to put it down as a wrong prediction. As I said Camasara is the danger-man and he did get MOTM for an outstanding performance...but Sunderland could not get the win.It took just 5 minutes for him to get his name on the scoreboard when he latched onto an Inaki Williams cross and beat the advancing Boruc with a great chip. This was the score at half time. The second half started as a disaster for England Keeper Butland. Feyenoord kicked off, immediately went on the attack and won themselves a corner. Propper took it and played a curling shot into the 6-yard box which Butland completely missed and it flew straight into the goal. This one mistake probably cost Manager Huddo the points on the day. Two minutes later Camasara struck again this time from a free kick about 24 yards out and to the left of goal. His swerving shot dipped under the crossbar and although he got a hand to it Boruc could not keep it out. Sunderland held on till the 82nd minute when they gave away a free kick wide on the right. Moukandjo whipped a fast low cross into the box and Ward-Prowse struck it brilliantly into the roof of the net. Butland at least got his hand on this one but the sheer pace of the ball made it unstoppable. Final Score 2-2

150xafc-ajax.jpg                    V                    150x_hannover-96.jpg

Prediction: Hanover travel to Ajax this week. Ajax manager LauraV has her squad ticking nicely at the moment with Telles and Maksimovic a real threat down the left. Hanover is not faring so well with Caio's team yet to register a goal. Ajax to take the points here. 0-2

Well Hanover certainly got themselves on the scoreboard with Leon Osman netting a brace but even this could not stop Divock Origi from taking the MOTM award. Origi opened the scoring in just the third minute when Suarez drifted a ball across the box and the Hanover defense, which clearly still had their minds in the dressing room, just did not pick him up. His header was perfect and struck the back of the net with the keeper stranded. This certainly woke Hanover up and they equalized in just 6 minutes When Jeremy morel found Osman at the edge of the box and the midfielder curled one into the top corner to level the score. In the 20the minute Origi, who was being an absolute menace to the Hanover defense, went on a weaving run towards the goal and was brought down inside the box by a careless tackle from Robert Huth who was lucky not to be booked. Origi himself took the Penalty and even though Adrian went the right way the shot was too strong for him to keep out. 2-1 to Ajax. But the scoring in this half was not finished. In the 33rd minute midfielder Charlie Adam put a slide rule pass into the box that Osman met with a fierce strike that Ryan could not keep out 2-2. In the second half both sides lifted their game and although Origi continued to menace the visitors goal but Adrian would not be beaten while Ryan at the other end also kept the ball out of the net. After four goals in the first half there were none in the second. Final Score 2-2

Prediction: Atletico Madrid travel to Stuttgart as another team that has failed to find the net so far this season and will feel the loss of Paulista at the back who is out with a groin strain. Both teams will be looking for points to move out of the cellar. Forecasting an away win here as I feel Manager KJKJ is still settling in at Stuttgart following the exit of his predecessor ...but it should be a very tight game. 0-3

Well KJKJ certainly proved me wrong on this one and Cameron Lucas must be pulling his hair out trying to work out where he can get a goal from...three games now with not one ball in the net. On the face of it the game was fairly even. Possession was 50/50 Shots on target 6-4 to Stuttgart and even corners were 7-6 the same way. Both keepers played well. But the difference between them turned out to be a masterful half time substitution when Millik was replaced by Oliviera. The 35 year old was only on the field for 4 minutes when he latched onto a beautiful through ball from Zielinski and beat the keeper handsomely. Oliviera continued to haunt the Atletico defense and in the 67th minute Boufal found him on the break with a first time cross from the left and the Brazilian had his second for the half. It is not often that a player can win MOTM and only be on the field for half the game but today was that day. keep an eye on this being a regular substitution for Stuttgart. Final Score 2-0

150x_psg.jpg                    V                     150x_eintracht-frankfurt.jpg

Prediction: Frankfurt travel to PSG with a one win one loss record. Both teams are shipping goals with PSG conceding 6 and Frankfurt 4 in two games. With Marin and Delli Alle the providers for their respective teams an open game will certainly produce an exciting and high scoring game.. Looks like a high scoring draw for me this time around. 0-4 - Predictions on fire for this round - NOT!

I was right that it was a high scot=ring game with 6 goals scored but there was a little improvement ini the PSG defense who managed to concede only 2 on the day. Continuing the early goal theme we have seen in other games the dangerous Delli Alli slotted home the first for Frankfurt in the 5th minute when he took a free kick from 28 yards and the wall just did not do its job. The ball curled around it crept inside the post. Just tow minutes later Marquinho found found Mandi at the top of box with a ball cut back from the touchline and the latter made no mistake with a cracker that went in off the post. At this point is really looked the my predictions were on track. However as the half progressed Sessegnon started to exert some authority over the midfield which, in the 22nd minute led to Beavue finding Chester on the edge of the box with room to beat the keeper to his left. Half time 2-1 to the hosts. PSG were certainly getting more of the possession at this stage but Sportiello made a fast downfield clearance to Coman who was brought down in a professional foul by Wilson who for some reason failed to receive a card. Delli Alli stepped up and beat Zoet handsomely from 23 yards for his second. At this point it was 2-2 and the draw looked likely. But we had reckoned without Sessegnon. Firstly a great run into the box from Joselu on 73 minutes resulted in a late tackle and Sessegnon stepped up to take the penalty...3-2. Again no yellow card issued. Then in the 88th minute, from a free kick, Sessegnon returned the compliment finding Joselu unmarked in the box and he beat Sportiello to give PSG the 2 goal break. Alli was unlucky not to score hi hat trick just  a minute later when a ball from Talisca was flicked goal-wards but went narrowly wide. Final Score 4-2
