I'm happy to have Alderweireld, Kompany, Vertonghen and Vermaelen in my national team, but with that saying I still chose Godin. Because he is one of The best (Chiellini is my first) ! Don't you want that your national team have more stronger players ?

If Godin was Belgian he will be the captain...

Alderweireld though quality, struggled to stay healthy and play this past year.  Vertonghen had perhaps his best season ever. Wonderful performance from him. Kompany is classy...the one month a year he is on the field at this point. And Vermaelen is second level at this point.

Euhm... short tournament ? You mean the most important tournament where each country sends his 23 best players ? :/

It may be the most important tournament in the world though there are those who would argue the point. Still, 3 matches does not a player define. Is George Best not one of the all time greats for not even have played at a World Cup?

Hi all, As you have seen, I have not really been active over the past few months other than updating my preds. It's just been me phasing out of the forum. Now that the reviews are done, I can say

Well, cruising in the Championship certainly gave him confidence, it's a ver tough league, let's see how it goes.

Also an example of how quickly opinions can change. Remember when he first came up with Porto, he excelled and everybody loved him. Then he struggled for a couple of season and everyone said he was a failure. Then, he moves to Wolves, may have been the best player in the entire Championship last season and everybody loves him again. It's a fickle crowd those that watch the matches. haha

My point is I can easily say Godin would be the captain in our defence while we have 4 very good defenders (Vermaelen is underrated)

You're right about that and I can not answer on that question. I never saw him playing :)

We agree on the value of Godin. But Vermaelen underrated. Thanks for the laugh mate. :D

I mean, he's not bad or unworthy, but he is clear second choice and a long ways from very good. He was once there. But no more.

Similarly, I don't think you can consider Kompany very good anymore because of his health issues. Yes, he is clearly top-shelf when healthy, but how often is that? And how often do we get to see that? Part of any player being very good or above for me is the ability to be on the field. Many a good careers were ruined, or at least held back, by injury. Kompany looks to be part of that club unfortunately.

It depends on the person i guess, i still think Sanches can make it, even when everyone sees a bad player now. The thing is in Portugal people found out about the word flop, and now people call almost every player they don't like or even know nothing about "flops".

ok so Salah, Matic, Lewandoski and the whole german team should all drop?

Or how about the players how didn't even get there this year. Some of who will get there. People like:

Oblak or Hamsik or Pjanic or Aubameyang or the whole Chilean and Italian national teams?

Ultimately, many consider Oblak to be among the top 2-3 GKs in the entire world, but since he'll likely never play in a World Cup, I guess everyone is wrong, right? haha

I wouldn't be ready to give up on Sanches yet, but his steps backward are concerning. I definitely hope the best for him.

He was amazing. Pele said he was the best player he'd seen, which must count for something. Clearly I'm a fan though (George Best is my profile pic in case you didn't know).

Cristiano Ronaldo or Muller + Diego Costa?

Ronaldo. He's maintaining his level. Don't give up Ronaldo at this point unless you are getting back a generational talent like him. Mbappe or Jesus for example. Or a truly top young defender like Kimmich or Varane. And then you'd still need a second piece IMHO.

What's people's thoughts on the likelihood of Ante Rebic getting a +2 to 89 on the back of the World Cup?

None. It's a small snapshot of time. He's not suddenly an 89 rated player. And Germany was just done. If he has a great start to the season, maybe, just maybe he'll get an 89.

Well I think they've certainly under reviewed him. The way he's performed this season, and the way he's performed in this tournament is definitely of an 89 calibre. He was one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga last season, looks like he could well get a big money move and ahead of Brozovic (90), Badelj (90) and Kovacic (91) and the pecking order for this Croatia side. If he can keep on making a key impact, should they get to the final or win the competition then surely he'd get an 89?

Not until Germany, or wherever he is playing, is reviewed again.

I think the point he was trying to make was that if he does rise, it won't be just because of the World Cup.  If he does have a good season or deserved to rise more, than the World Cup will help. But the World Cup won't be the reason he rises.
