Celtic Football Club

1888

235412865_dfc73c134b.jpg

There has been dramatic seens unfolding at Celtic park over the past 24 hours with fan favourite Nathan Kirby stepping down due to personal reasons and now club chairman and former Home Secretary John Ried is happy to announce the appointment of J.Friel.JohnReidHeadshot.jpg

John Ried: The family here at Celtic Park are proud to announce the appointment of J.Friel. After having a board meeting to discuss possible candidates we narrowed it down to 2 people Friel and another which will remain anonimas. We had very little time deciding upon a new club coach as we understand that Friel was being tracked by several other clubs. So we had to move quicky and after a brief interview we thrashed out a deal which will see Mr.Friel take the helm at Celtic park for the foreseable future. Everyone connected with the club is delighted to have Friel at the club, he has a proven track record in England and Portugal and I am sure he is the right man to bring the club back to the top of European football where it belongs.

The contriversial Scottish born manager took the hot-seat last night andand wasted no time in breaking into the clubs transfer kitty to sign 17 year old Argentine prospect Patrico Rodriguez in a 5m pound deal.

Hot prospect

The new Celtic boss has already been linked with a number of players and our sources tell us that a deal is close to bring in two Bundesliga players with Scottish International Scott Brown heading to Germany.

UDINESE 1:1 MILAN

D'Agostino(25) : Jankulovski(61)

"Very pleased and very unlucky..." was the reaction of Ross Philp after his Udinese really should have taken three points from giants Milan. "...yes they had more possession, but goals win games, and if you don't shoot you don't score. We had 15 strikes, with 12 on target, them having 6 and 6 on target". Philp's second string side, many rested for the Reading match on Friday, took the lead, but then lost it after the hour, Milan eventually hanging on for a draw.

Udinese are sixth at the moment, on 23 points, with form W7 D2 L5, as they are really building up to mount a challenge on the title. They are seven points off leaders Fiorentina, and facing Reading on Euro duty on Friday, they have matches against Inter and Lazio following. "...this is a busy time as we are still in the SMFA Shield, and are still in the third round of the Italian Shield. But we have a squad capable of the progression we need in all competitions, and we will be glad, very glad, when we get a break".

SMFA SHIELD, ROUND OF LAST 32.

UDINESE 2:1 READING

57_front_small.gif23_front_small.gif

After the rating changes, Philp now saw Zapata and Felipe in the heart of the defence, with Mesto and Dossena filling up the wings in attack at the Friuli. Philp had looked at the Reading squad and decided upon a 4-4-1-1 formation which has in the past, excelled against the normal 4-4-2 formation, tonight used by English side Reading, who are currently, domestically 12th in league.

After only eleven minutes, the 40,000 capacity crowd inside the Friuli were shocked as Reading's Glen Little using his pace chipped Udinese stopper Jose Corona. But newly drafted into the Udinese eleven, defender Dias Felipe poked the ball past the Reading goalkeeper Hahnemann to draw level. And the classiest player on the pitch, used to scoring the goals for Udinese, after 36 minutes, burst into the box and lashed home from 15 yards out.

560360_mediumsquare.jpg

And the scoring ended there, as Udinese progressed to the quarter-finals of this year's competition. And the reward was a home tie against currently fourth place in Holland, Feyenoord who boast Roy Makaay and Giovanni Van Bronckhorst. Philp said "It is a very tough tie, but it could have been worse especially with the likes of Juventus left in the Shield. But we are at home, and will hope to play well and progress" said Philp earlier.

SMFA CUP nights at Celtic Park are world renound for the fantastic atmosphere which is generated by the Celtic faithful as it strikes fear into the opposition and there have never been a better example of the so called 12th man that at the Parkhead fortress.

Tonight saw J.Friel in his first game in charge of the Hoops as they were up against Samba giants Sao Paulo which was sure to throw up a thrilling encounter.

Celtic lined up in a 4-5-1 formation which generally shocked the majority of Hoops supporters and the Smtv presenters but this was nothing compared to the shock they would soon recieve when they stadium announcer called out the starting line up.

Friel known for his contriversial decisions and unique management style ditched the superstars in favour of the young guns and what most would call the fringe players at Parkhead.

Players such as Club captain Steven Mcmanus, Scottish International Scott Brown and Irish gem Aiden Mcgeady failed to even make the bench while Scott Cuthbert, Jim O'Brien, Teddy Bjarnason and Dairmuid O'Carroll were the ones in favour.

Sao Paulo lined up in the traditional 4-4-2 formation and while they did not field a full strength side either due to injuries and susspensions still on paper had a exciting side with players such as Brazilian Internationals Hernanes and the legend that is R.ceni.

Match Highlights

hoopshudle.jpg

Celtic kicked-off the match and started piling on the pressure and were unlucky not to be one up in under a minute when a unexpected shot caught R.Ceni off guard but he managed to recover in time and in the end it was comfortable save.

The Hoops frontman D.Riordan was the next up to try his luck but he also blasted into the arms of R.Ceni.

Diego Tardelli was then first to test A.Boruc at the home end and was unlucky not to score after Boruc fumbled the initital shot only for Tardelli to blast over.

18 Minutes had gone in the match and the players were lapping up the praise from the fans as they sang unique individual songs about them then broke into the famous Celtic song You'll Never Walk Alone. Half way through the Celtic fans were on their feet hoping the upcomming opportunity was going to be the breakthrough goal

and they were not disapointed when a long cross from the left of midfield was met by the head of 20 year old Irish SMFA CUP debutant D.O'Carroll that sent the parkhead fortress into ruptures.

Sao Paulo looked distraught but looks can be decieveing as they certianly didn'ttake their foot off the gas as they continued to open up the Celtic backline time after time.

Then finally they silenced the home fans through a contender for goal of the tournament when J.Lozano glided in a curling right foot strike past the despairing A.Boruc.

Half-Time 1-1

With no changes at half-time Sao Paulo got the second half under way but quicky lost possession when D.O'Carroll picked the ball up and advanced down the wing and swung in a great cross only for T.Bjarnason to head it over from 6 yards.

Just 10 minutes later Parkhead was booming once again and Friel was saw leaping up in the air Martin O'Neil esque with joy and excitement as D.O'Carroll remembered the Brazilians the meaning of Samba Football when he showed tremendous athleticism and connected with the ball with a thunderous overhead kick which smashed into the back of the net.

Sao Paulo were feeling the heat now after they were the ones under constant pressure and could have pulled one back but the ball nailed the crossbar and A.Boruc quickly graped the rebound to the relief of the back four.

Scottish centre half J.Kennedy was denied a penalty on the 59th when he was clear through on goal and was brought down but the referee waved it away but surely if it wasn't a penalty there should have been a card ?

It was still all Celtic until the 89th minute when hearts were in their mouth as G.Fernando found himself clear of the defence and one-on-one with Boruc but he couldn't capitalise and struck the ball off the post.

Roma.jpg

Sparky's Reign - After 10 Games.....

SMTV caught up with AS Roma manager Mitu Ahmed to talk about his teams current form and future plans. The boss took over after 4 games and are currently sitting at 3rd place - 2 points away from the top. However, the manager believes his team could have, and should have done better. The team started off poorly under the new boss, losing to Udinese 2-1.

Sparky told SMTV;

"It's an amazing feeling to be here, but these feelings can easily fade away if you team are not performing up to standards. I took over Roma thinking that we can win something this season. We are currently 3rd, the championship is still open! 2 points behind leaders Fiorentina and still 24 games remaining. I will admit that the team didn't play too well under my guidance, I can see that they had problems with my unorthodox 3-5-2 formation and out style to attack directly. I had forgotten that this is the Italian league, we need to be patient in building up an attack. However, after the first 5 games or so, the lads found form, this was after a change of tactics and formation. I think that we are currently full filing ambitions and I guess time will show. All that we need now is to carry on performing."

"The SMFA Champs cup is one trophy that I would love to win. Some of the best teams around Europe compete for this so it is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious. We are 2nd in Group H after some disappointing results. First off was a 3-3 draw against Sao Paulo, a game I thought we should have won. We dominated possession and had most goals on target, yet we needed a late goal to achieve a point? Then came a 2-0 loss against Liverpool. They are absolutely fantastic in these competitions, but it is teams like us who have to stop them. Yet we failed to do that. The race for 2nd place is open, We are favorites, but you mustn't underestimate Celtic or Sao Paulo."

"My favorite match so far has to be the 2-1 win against rival Juventus. We achieved a vital 3pts, a game which placed us 4th. They were first place back then. Before the match, all I asked the lads were 'Do you want it?', I was referring to the championship, If you want it, then you have to start now. That was all I said to the lads and they proved to me that not only did they want the title, but that one performance showed that ther were hungry for success."

"There are still more things to come, this is just the beginning, I'm not expecting the lads to get a win after win after win. We need time, so far I thank the board and the fans for their patience, their support and contributions are starting to pay off. Our main target is the championship, if this means that we should forget about the Champs Cup then we will. That's how strong our feelings are."

AS Roma face Siena today, Sparky said that his team have no late fitness worries and are expected to field a strong team. A win here could see them regain top spot - If Fiorentina and Internazionale lose

Champions League Group Stages

Group A

GroupA.jpg

This group is panning out almost exactly as expected. Levski are struggling at the half way stage of the group stages but Sevilla look on course to win it. Chelsea are only one point behing though and could clinch first place with a few wins. Marseille are not done yet, they are only two points off Chelsea in second place and three points off Sevilla. They could prove a shock.

Group B

GroupB.jpg

Valencia are top of the group as expected but the biggest shock so far is that Arsenal are bottom and struggling. Arsenal have only three points from a possibly nine and if they dont get a string of wins going soon they could find them selves in major trouble. Dynamo Kyiv and VFB Stuttgart are tied on points for second place and either of them could qualify.

Group C

GroupC.jpg

Argueably the best team in the world are struggling in this group. FC Porto are doing very well and are unbeaten in the group so far with seven points. Rangers have also proved a shock as they are on course for the knockout stages. FC København are struggling but they are still only one point off a qualification spot and we know anything is possible.

Group D

GroupD.jpg

The top two teams in this group are in the top two as expected but Real Madrid are just edging it. Toulouse and CSKA Moskva are struggling and they will need to get some wins soon if they are going to pose a serious threat to get into the knockout stages.

Group E

GroupE.jpg

Fenerbahce are taking this group by storm having beaten all of the teams. Lyon and Werder Bremen are level on points and it looks as they will be battling for second place. Ajax have been really struggling in this group and have yet to record a win. They will need to win atleast two of there games if they are going to qualify.

Group F

GroupF.jpg

One of the tightest groups with three teams on equal amount of points. FC Schalke 04, Milan and Boca Juniors are all serious contenders for going through. Elfsborg are struggling as expected and are yet to record there first win.

Group G

GroupG.jpg

Manchester United look on course for the group stages as they have won all of there group games so far. Dinamo Bucuresti and PSV are level on four points and either one of them could qualify. Lazio look dead and buried as they have zero points. This group looks as it is going to Manchester United.

Group H

GroupH.jpg

Liverpool are cruising this group but the other qualification spot is wide open as only three points separate second from fourth. Roma look the most likely to qualify but Celtic or São Paulo could cause a shock!

Aberdeen 1 - 3 Celtic

Jeanvion Yulu MATONDO (31) Mohamed CHERMITI (56)

Barry ROBSON (77)

Mohamed CHERMITI (80)

After Celtics midweek heroics against Brazilian giants Sao Paulo at Parkhead it was a trip to Pittodre to face Ricky Evans Aberdeen. Celtic and Aberdeen were both level on points so it was a important affair for both sides especially Celtic if they were going to get their league campaign back on track after a misserable start.

Aberdeen manager Evans settled for the same 4-4-2 formation that got them 3 valuable points at Amondvale on Wednesday and stuck with the same line up aswell.

Celtic made some changes to thier already depleated side with former Dundee United man Barry Robson replacing Jim O'Brien on the right side and Jarosik slotting in to central midfield in place of Icelandic International Teddy Bjarnason.

Derek Riordan was rested and 4m pound signing Mohamed Chermiti made his 3rd competitive appearence in a hoops jersey. Celtic manager Jinky also gave a debut to Vitorino Antunes a emergancy loan signing from SMFA CUP rivals Roma.

PITTODRIE.jpg

Match Highlights

The game kicked-off with Aberdeen on the back foot as Celtic applied pressure and nearly capitilised through a mixup in the Dons defence only for New Zelander Chris Killen to blast over.

This however changed vastly as minutes later Matt Taylor had the opportunity to put the Dons in front after showing terrific footwork only for his finishing to let him down.

4 Minutes later the away end had something to laugh about when hate figure Barry Nicholson the former Rangers midfielder tried a overly ambitous shot from 30 yards out which nearly landed in Peterhead.

Celtic were nearly caught out again when a former Celt in Jamie Smith thundered a 25 yarder at Boruc which looked destined for the back of the net but to the relief of the Hoops blasted off the crossbar and away to safety.

Aberdeen made the breakthrough with half a hour gone when Belgian Jeanvion Yulu MATONDO 4.7m signing from Roda Jc out jumped the Celtic backline to make it 1-0.

Things then got worse for the Glasgow side as Alexei Yashin sent Czech International and former Cska Moscow star off after he got caught headbuttting one of the Dons midfield.

Half-Time 1 - 0

The first half ended with Aberdeen having Celtic by the throat and the second half started the same as Israeli Maor Buzaglo hit the post with a right footed bullet of a drive from 25 yards.

Celtic pulled one back through Mohamed CHERMITI after a foraging run at the Aberdeen defence which let them buckled and he took his chance very well and blasted past T.Kuszczak to the delight of the travelling support.

Barry ROBSON then put Celtic in front after the ball was glided in to the near post and Robson was the first to react and it payed off for the Scot.

Not to be outdone by his team mate Mohamed CHERMITI then added the 3rd after the Dons defence was got napping when the ball was slipped through to him and struck the ball at lightening speed in off the shaking woodwork.

Full-Time

Post Match Interview

Reporter: Jinky your enjoying your time here I can tell by the cheshire grin on your face how do you think your team faired today.

Jinky: Well that grin is there because we were lucky to walk away here with the three points Aberdeen played fantastic but just couldn't deliver the end product which we had no problem doing.

Reporter: Thats 2 wins from 2 congratulations what do you think the new bhoy V.Antunes.

Jinky: I don't single out individual performances it was a team effort and the lads done well in front of goal we were a bit shaky at the back but overall the performance was fine but I will be looking for more from them in the coming weeks.

Reporter: Smtv understands that Scot Brown could be heading for the exit with German giants Hamburger intertested but we understand Benfica is his oreferred destination is there any truth in this ?

Jinky: Yes yes myself and Scot sat down and had words and he feels its time to move on but the deal isnt anywhere near the final stages were still in neogotiations. He has told me that he would prefer a move to Portugal and we're looking to part exchange him for Oscar Cardoza.

Reporter: I hope it all works.

Jinky: Thanks again.

New man in charge at Ajax

After taking over at Ajax on Friday Welsh manager David Winston noticed that the last manager had really devastated the first team and left the team needing real restructuring. The old manager had worked the first team into the ground that they were all struggling in their first training session with Winston. He only had a few first teamers available for his first match in charge against AZ Alkmaar at the Amsterdam Arena on Saturday and played several youngsters in order to give his first team a well deserved rest. He hopes to have his best players available for the SMFA Cup group game against high flying Fenerbahce on Friday, Winston has taken Ajax who are rock bottom of their SMFA Cup group after 3 losses, they can still qualify but will need to get a result fro m the game against the Turkish side to have any chance.

The young team that Ajax fielded Saturday done Winston proud as they ran out 3-0 winners after the run of 11 games without a win came to an end with goals from Edgar Manucharyan, Rydell Poepon and Siem De Jong. The Welshman is very happy and impressed with the way that his young players showed maturity to step into the first team at such short notice.

Winston has made a big signing already in Spanish defender Fernando Amorebieta from Atl. Bilbao.

He hopes to strengthen his squad further in the coming weeks.

"Amazing!"

Having beat title chasing Juventus on Wednesday comfortably 4-1 and in Turin, Parma were clearly buzzing going into another crucial game against Palermo last night.

A new hero among the Gialloblu faithful propped again to make it 1-0 with 29 minutes gone. Reginaldo was able to finish perfectly after a skillful run past 3 defenders.

22728_news.jpg

Until the last 10 minutes, Parma although having many chances before just went goal crazy. Corradi`s well placed shot on the 81st was followed by a Daniele Dessena trademark volley. Finishing it off was the on form Morrone, adding to the 2 goals he scored against Juventus with another simple finish into the bottom corner.

"I appreciate how much time I've had with the players and the faith from the Chairman has allowed me to focus more without added pressure. We're now the highest we've ever been and in the European places. --- The hunger in the cups are also still there. We'll go into the game on Monday, hoping to bag as many possible past Atalanta. We always go into the Monday game like that. I feel that in either cup, we should hopefully go far and win it."

Valencia News

Valencia update 15 games in!

vcf1.gif

Game 1

Valencia 4-1 Mallorca

Scorers were- Morientes, Joe Cole, Vicente (2)

Managers Comment- We played very well and deserved our win. I am pleased for Joe as he had just joined the club and it was good to see him prove his worth to us. Morientes and Vicente also had an extremely good gamem, which i was happy about.

Game 2

Valencia 4-0 Sevilla

Scorers were- Moretti, Albelda, Cole, Vicente

Another good result against a good side. I was happy fot Joe once more and Vicente for getting another goal each. It was good to see a defender coming up from the back and getting a goal and Albelda proved his worth aswell.

Game 3

Valencia 2-0 Getafe

Scorers were- Alonso and Vicente

Again i was pleased eith a victory although i thuink it was expected as we are by far the better side. Alonso the new signing got himself on the scoresheet which is also a bonus for the club and himself, and gagain Vicente cropped up with goals.

Game 4

Valencia 1-2 Barca

Scorer was- Morientes

I ecpected a loss, but still dont want to talk about it much

Game 5

Valencia 3-1 Almeria

Scorers were- Moretti, Morientes, Alonso

Again i was happy with the Input from Alonso and Morientes who both grabbed themselves another goal each which was good. It was also nice to see another defender score, the benefit of using attacive tactic!

Game 6

Valencia 1-1 Osasuna

Scorers- Raulo Albiol

I was a bit annoyed that we only managed to get a draw from the game as we were by far the better team, but alternatively i am please Raul Albiol got his 1st goal for us, and there are plenty of +ves to take from the performance.

Game 7

Valencia 3-1 Villareal

Scorers- Morientes (2) Moretti

Good game for us as we played them off the park and fully deserved the win. Again a defender scoring for us is good as it shows our attacive policy is working and Fernando getting 2 will do wonders for his confidence which was gtting a bit low

Game 8

Valencia 5-2 Levante

Scorers- Silva, Manuel Fernandes, Morientes, Albiol, Joe Cole

Another great performance, i was dissappointed to concede 2 but we can work on that. Another defender scored which is good and the 4 other players chipped in well which was plesing.

Game 9

Valladoliid 1-0 Valencia

I disaster for us we didnt score and we didnt play well at all. I think this is a game we should try and forget rather than look at, but there were positives in the game, but its trying to find them which will be hard!

Game 10

Valencia 2-1 Santander

Scorers- Cole, Morientes

We won which is the most important although it was not in quite a fashion as i expected but a win is a win and i am pleased with that. I am also happy Cole and Fernando are finding there form again as we need to bolster and continue 'bolstering our attack!

Game 11

Valencia 3-1 Murcia

Scorers- Hamit, Angulo (2)

Pleasing that Hamit scored his first game of the season as he is a good player and he showed it today. Angulo scored his first and then his second, which was also good, as it shows more depth. The win was also a good win for us and i am very pleased with it.

Game 12

Valencia 3-0 Recreativo de Huelva

Scorers- Silva, Cole, Alexis

Again this game was a good result and we scored 3 goos goals, which is ust as expected. We should sregnth and depth as Silva and Cole borh scored which shows that attacking midfielders is important.

Game 13

Real Betis 4-3 Valencia

Scorers- Silva, Arizmenzi, Albelda

We agin showed that we can score plenty of goals but again our defence is weak against a team which i think that we really should have beaten. Perhaps time to invest in a new defender to help sort out the fact that we scored 3 but still managed to lose.

Game 14

Valencia 4-3 Athletico Bilbao

Scorers- Kalou, Angulo, Cole, Fernandes

AFter 35 minutes we were 3-0 down and i was not very happy. With 5 minuted to go we were 3-1 down, however 3 quick goals meant we won. I think thtat this result showed we had great character and i am pleased with that as it it important.

Game 15

Valencia 3-1 Zaragoza

Scorers- Albelda, Cole (2)

Great result itshows we can beat some of the best and i think that we should we are a team to watch as we can cause an upset. I was pleased for Cole as he keeps getting the back of the date and Albelda aswell as he is a fantastic player.

Top Scorers

Joe Cole - 8

Morientes - 7

Vicente - 4

ALbelda, Silva, Moretti, Angulo all on 3

Plymouth Argyle News

argylevsbristoljd4.png

In another great win for Plymouth Argyle they move up into the playoff places in the Championship. Both goals came in the first half, with the opener coming from bulky center back Krisztián Timar, and the second coming from star striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

Match Stats

argylevsbristolmatchstaoy3.png

As you can see Argyle didn't even let Bristol City have a shot on target this was down to great defense from the strikers down and great commitment shown in pressurising all over.

Fiorentina update

The manager of Fiorentina had this to say to a hot chick of La Gazzetta Dell Sport.

"3th in the league... not bad, we're on schedule cause the top 4 is what we want.

We're out of the SMFA Shield and out of the cup... but so what? That's not an issue, we played with a second team and will keep on playing with a second squad in the domnestic shield.

Qualifing for the SMFA Cup, that's what we want babe!!"

It wont be easy, maybe we went a bit too far in our selling older, higher rated players to get young tallents policy.

And we feel a bit scr*wed in the Montovillo - Obodo swap with Udinese. But we won against Udi, so take that Ross!! :)

*ps* The Italian league is pretty cool so I'll make more posts here from now on.

Good managing on my part, bad on yours.

Montolivo and Obodo were 89, but Obodo was a DM as you were desperate for one. Montolivo goes to 90, Obodo as he wasn't playing much, drops to 88.

Oh well, you can have your win.

I'm in the quarters of the SMFA Shield and the Italian Shield.

And now he isn't even a DM anymore. :o I knew he wasn't playing much but I'm OBSESSED with DM's. The first thing I look for in a team is "Do they have a good DM, if not I must buy one".

Our game was fun, 6 red cards, each 3. B)

Another dissapointing match for the Brazilian Giants as they are beaten by 1st placed Estudiantes manager Kevin Heaton Expressed His Views.

"The Team Is Undergoing Rest As Main Players Are Injured as We are still in all the cups my team needs more strength, after being second down to sixeteenth managers would be on the verge of quitting but i am dedicated to sort this team out, i will need to make a few signings to help us, a full strength side will be coming on the pitch soon, i can only apoligise to the fans"
