Champions League

Borussia Dortmund - Club Brugge KV ( 0-0 )

Horvath; Poulaîn - Mechele - Denswil; Mata - Nakamba - Vormer (Decarli 92') - Amrabat - Dennis (Rits 76'); Vanaken - Wesley (Openda 92')

A defensive and strong organisation performance from Club Brugge.

Brandon Mechele was the exponent from this strong defensive performance.

Europa League

Standard Luik - Sevilla FC ( 1-0 )

Ochoa; Fai - Luyindama - Vanheusden - Laifis; Cimirot - Bastien; Carcela (Lestienne 86') - Mpoku (Marin 44') - Djenepo; Emond (O.Sà 66')

Strong performance from Standard Luik against the nr. 1 from Spain. They had even the chances to win with 2-0 or even 3-0.

The others

KRC Genk was equal with Malmö FF (unbelievable after a 2-0 away for KRC Genk...)

RSC Anderlecht was the same. They gave a point for the coefficiant, but that's the only thing about that game.

Against Germany's number 1 no less.

Great run and Brugge even deserved more points in this year's group stage. It will be a close race to get among the seeded teams in the EL.

Standard, the big surprise. The win against Sevilla was deserved. Standard is still alive, Akhisarspor next.

Due to the 5-1 in the first leg it's unlikely that failing to convert their chances in the return leg, i.e. winning 2-0 instead, will prevent Standard from advancing to the KO phase. In case Sevilla win their final group game at home, as is to be expected, we'll have a three-way tie. Because of Standard's GD (-3) they'd need to win in Turkey by at least 2 goals and Sevilla would have to win 4-0. Any win for Standard would suffice if Sevilla beat Krasnodar by at least 5 goals (and then Sevilla don't need to keep a clean sheet). In these type of situations it's unlikely to see a high-scoring game. If Krasnodar are losing they could as well turtle up and go through as runners-up than risk elimination. Sevilla OTOH have little reason to rack up the score (+ risk elimination themselves by letting Krasnodar back in the game).

Sevilla dropping points at home against Krasnodar is Standard's best chance. Standard would need at least a point if Sevilla lose and all three points if Sevilla is kept to a draw. That's a lot less complicated than a three-way tie.

Genk could also end up in a three-way tie if they lose. Yet in their case a loss = elimination. They need at least a point from their final group game. Genk shouldn't have wasted a two goal lead (and should have scored a third). They should have secured qualification already. Hey-ho, Genk will have another shot, at home v. Sarpsborg.

Also, it's a shame (for the ranking) that in the other game Besiktas scored the late winner, what Genk themselves almost did at home against Besiktas, or Brugge at home v. Monaco, or Brugge conceding a late goal at home v. Dortmund, or Standard away in Russia, or Shakhtar's last-gasp winner a few days ago (they were virtually eliminated but that goal gave them a lifeline and most likely makes it a close race again with Ukraine in the rankings), ... a lot of late goals/big misses and usually they cost Belgium in the rankings. OK in one game Standard scored the late winner, it's just the one game though.

Anderlecht, two lousy points from 5 games, SMH. Seriously, their Z team is expected to beat Spartak Trnava but even playing at home they didn't do better than a bloodless draw. It's fine to experiment when you're already eliminated. And I saw plenty of young Belgian talent ... on the bench ... why not start them instead of keeping them on the bench/giving them a paltry few minutes 🤡

So many (coefficient) points were spilled, not only by Anderlecht, but by all Belgian clubs. The haul will still be decent, I hope. Belgian talents getting more minutes could have been a silver lining but no, even in a dead rubber their time on the pitch was limited.

Sounded like Henrotay was trying to take Dendoncker to Atleti too (but they didn't exercise their option to buy him) and then Doyen/Mendes got involved. Mourinho all of a sudden showed interest in bringing Dendoncker to Man United, creating a bit of buzz around the player. Dendoncker himself wasn't interested in putting his future in the hands of Doyen, declining to move to OM, but in the end still went to a Mendes club. So far it hasn't gone swimmingly. Fans were worried about their "new" player as he seldomly made the bench in league games despite the club being confronted by a poor run of results. Well he did get those 9' during his debut.

Club Brugge KV. - Atlético Club de Madrid (0-0)

Horvath; Poulaîn - Mechele - Denswil; Amrabat - Nakamba - Vormer - Vanaken (Mats Rits 91') - Ngongé (Luan Peres 69'); Openda (Schrijvers 74') - Wesley

Strong organisation, but overclassed by Atlético Clube de Madrid. In the 2nd half Atlético wasn't good and had Club Brugge the ultimate chance to win with 1-0.

Special mentions for:

Ethan Horvath

Brandon Mechele

Ruud Vormer

Moraes Wesley (strong game)

The youngsters did a good job:

Cyril Ngongé

Loïs Openda

Hi Thorgan, many thanks for the update on the risers.

After your post in the summer about players to sign, i signed Gholizadeh , Jhon Lucumi and Groeneveld in many gameworlds.

They all were predicted 78-82 if i remember correct, now they are all noted for a small rise from 78-80.

Can you tell a bit about these three players and why they don´t have so many minutes as expected before ?

Would you sign them now in a new gameworld or should you spend your money on other players which rise more ?

Many thanks for your help. And thanks for a wonderful and interesting thread to all who contribute here regularly.

Ali Gholizadeh

He was for a time of the season on the bench for Massimo Bruno. Finally the coach decided 2 or 3 weeks ago to put him in the first "11" with Gholizadeh (on the left), Benavente CAM and Bruno at the right. If his stats will grow a bit better, there is a big chance on 78 --> 82.

Jhon Lucumi

He played till now 34 % of the game time (560 minutes in total 1620 minutes). Actually he deserves to rise to 82, but it's not because his potential is 82 he will have 82 on this moment. The main reason is an injury. Normally he is back in 1 or 2 weeks from now. So yeah, based on these facts he will have a small rise (78 --> 80) on this moment. That's the reason for the small rise, but if he comes back and play like he did in the "34 %" he is a strong must buy. He has the potential to be the future for Colombia

Arnaut "Danjuma" Groeneveld

He played till now 54 % of the game time. It's a bit the same like Lucumi. He deserves to be 82, but the main reason is the same as Lucumi

Gholizadeh is a good choice on this moment to buy.

Some players that I can recommend now are...

Joakim Maehle

Simen Juklerod

Sebastiaan Bornauw

Alexis Saelemaekers

Giorgi Chakvetadze

Zinho Vanheusden

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Moraes Wesley

There are some more, but these players are strongly recommend to buy. All are options if you have a vision with your club(s) on the future, except maybe Juklerod.

Little doubt:

Albert Sambi Lokonga

--> he is a young talent, with a lot of flair. But there are a lot of injuries at the moment in RSC Anderlecht. I don't have a view if the coach Vanhaezebrouk will put him on the first "11" if everyone is back, but he deserves it.

Francis Amuzu

--> he is a player to buy on long term. He will rise, but he is player to have patience with. So that's up to you.

I also signed Paintsil in a couple of gameworlds, after seeing a video.

How good is he in a better league ? still worth buing in a new setup ?

His concurrence in KRC Genk is Leandro Trossard (one of the best in the competition) and Dieumerci Ndongola. He is a good player, but he isn't 100 % on his best. The coach Philippe Clement gives him chances (possibly enough for a + 1), but he needs to improve more to get more chances in the future in my opinion. Ivan Fiolic is another player who is quietly coming up, so he needs to developp a bit more the following weeks.

Not a strong must buy on this moment.
