First 11 in Belgium

Central defenders

Dutchman Stefano Denswil (Club Brugge), Belgian Brandon Mechele (Club Brugge), Ghanaian Joseph Aidoo (KRC Genk), Belgian Sébastien Dewaest (KRC Genk), Belgian Zinho Vanheusden (Standard Liege), Cypriot Kostas Laifis (Standard Liege), Tunesian Dylan Bronn (KAA Ghent), Norwegian Sigurd Rosted (KAA Gent), Belgian Dorian Dessoleil (Charleroi), Belgian Dino Arslanagic (Antwerp FC) and Japanese Takehiro Tomiyasu (STVV) are all central defenders I have nominated and have the chance to win a place in "The Best 11".

Belgium his competition is known for certain aspects. 1 of those aspects is defending. You notice that aspect in the large number of candidates for these positions.

2 players chosing from 11 players is a heavy task. In the first place I focused on the "wow" factor. In the 2nd place focused on how many matches they have behind their names. As the 3rd and last point their potential and the qualities they have shown.

With these information I'm going with the Japanese Takehiro Tomiyasu from STVV and the Belgian Brandon Mechele from Club Brugge. Both flawless in their game and both can perform certainly a level higher.

Tomiyasu becomes someone to keep an eye on.

1. Takehiro Tomiyasu

2. Brandon Mechele

3. Joseph Aidoo

4. Dylan Bronn

5. Zinho Vanheusden

6. Kostas Laifis

7. Sigurd Rosted

10. Dino Arslanagic

11. Dorian Dessoleil

Note: Normally Lucumi was also a candidate but because of his injury he didn't play enough to be in this list

Right defenders

In this category, 5 players have a chance at the position of the right defender in the First 11. The young Dane Joakim Mæhle, the young Belgian Alexis Saelemaekers, the Greek Stergos Marinos, the Camerooner Collins Fai and the Portuguese Aurelio Buta each stand a chance.

In the end, the choice seems clear to me. Joakim Mæhle clearly wins this for me. What a player. He seems to be tireless, has the technic and has a good view in the game.

This player will go far in his career.

1. Joakim Mæhle

2. Collins Fai

3. Alexis Saelemaekers

4. Aurelio Buta

5. Stergos Marinos

Defensive midfielders

In this category, 7 players have a chance at the position of the defensive midfielder. The young Norwegian Sander Berge from KRC Genk, the Belgian Faris Haroun from Antwerp FC, the Malagasyman Marco Ilaimaharitra from Charleroi, the young Belgian Bryan Heynen from KRC Genk, the Bosnian Gjoko Cimirot from Standard Dd Liège, the Nigerian Anderson Esiti from KAA Gent and the Gambian Sulayman Marreh from KAS Eupen are the 6 candidates for this place in the First 11.

This wins the Norwegian Sander Berge easily. He is one of the greatest talents, if not the greatest talent at the moment in Belgium. He had even an injury, but that did not become a problem to play further on his level.

1. Sander Berge

2. Bryan Heynen

3. Marco Ilaimaharitra

4. Gjoko Cimirot

5. Faris Haroun (on his age still an important factor for his team. Respect)

6. Anderson Esiti

7. Sulayman Marreh

So far:

Mæhle - Mechele - Tomiyasu - Uronen

What is the potential of Schlager of Salzburg? Rahul predicted +2. Is he being linked with bigger European club?

In March 2018 he was linked to Borussia Dortmund, but it's not serious any more. He will rise with + 1 definitely, but it's not that impressive his performances lately.

Central midfielders

In this category, 5 players have a chance to win the position of the central midfielder. The Ukrainian Ruslan Malinovskiy of KRC Genk, the Romanian Razvan Marin of Standard De Liège, the Belgian Vadis Odjidja of KAA Gent, the Belgian Mats Rits of Club Brugge and the Belgian Julien De Sart of KV Kortrijk are the contenders for a spot in the First 11.

Despite the surprisingly strong performances of Mats Rits and Vadis Odjidja, Ruslan Malinovskiy wins quite easily. The Ukrainian has a brilliant left foot and is a very important factor in the team. He is technically engineered and he is also a free-kick specialist.

1. Ruslan Malinovskiy

2. Vadis Odjidja

3. Mats Rits

4. Razvan Marin

5. Julien De Sart

Attacking midfielders

In this category, 6 players have a chance at the position of the attacking midfielder.

The Belgian Hans Vanaken from Club Brugge, the Spaniard Alejandro Pozuelo, the Peruvian Christian Benavente, the Israeli Lior Refaelov, the young Japanese Daichi Kamada and the experienced Spaniard Luis Garcia have a chance at the place 'nr 10' in the First 11.

If I have to be honest, this is only a battle between Vanaken and Pozuelo. Very difficult choice, because they are both the brain of their team. With 51% against 49%, Hans Vanaken wins this fight. The Belgian has a great added value in the team with 7 goals and 12 assists. Pozuelo his stats: 4 goals and 10 assists.

1. Hans Vanaken

2. Alejandro Pozuelo

3. Christian Benavente

4. Luis Garcia

5. Lior Refaelov

6. Daichi Kamada

Note: Luis García is 37 years old. Respect for what he still brings at this level.

So far:

Ochoa

Mæhle - Mechele - Tomiyasu - Uronen

Berge

Malinovskiy  - Vanaken

Thoughts on Casper de norre the new genk recruit ? Thanks. Also how good as heynen?

Young Belgian talent with nice potential. Will not play so much, because KRC Genk has Mæhle on that position, but it's a long term-buy.

In the Summer there will be a lot of clubs who wants Mæhle probably. Till then he will have his position in the squad. KRC Genk plays also in the Europa League. So it's possible he will play sometimes in the competition before an Europa League-game (Mæhle will rest then) and in a rotation system (Clement rotates on current base).

Heynen has a little chance to rise with + 1, because he plays often, but he isn't a first choice. Berge - one of the biggest talents - is his concurrence. Good player !
