What I'm doing here is to compare the world ratings according to SM with the FIFA world rankings. This is for fun and to stimulate some debate. I've looked at the best XI according to SM ratings for the international teams and calculated averages for comparison in order to find the final table.

Please note I know:

- This does not necessarily represent the best teams for each nation

- No definite conclusions can be made from this

- A national squad is made of more than 11 players.

Therefore, I would appreciate if any smart alecs who wish to make derogatory remarks about how I've done this to keep it to PM. This is for fun debate only and let's avoid unnecessary arguments :)

Anyway, here goes. I looked at the top 25 teams as stated by the FIFA rankings from January 2008:

Argentina - Average SM team rarting - 93.73

......................Abbondanzieri (92).......................

14. Scotland (990)...............................15. Turkey (89.19)

16. Mexico (970)..................................15. Cameroon (89.19)

17. Cameroon (967)..............................17. Columbia (89.09)

18. Turkey (927)..................................18. Romania (89.00)

22. Russia (890)...................................22. Poland (88.09)

23. Israel (878)....................................23. Ghana (87.91)

24. Ivory Coast (877)............................24. Bulgaria (87.82)

24. Sweden (877).................................25. Israel (87.00)

The numbers in brackets represent the points according to the FIFA formula in the FIFA rankings table and the average rating as calculated above for the SM XI rankings table

Note: Israel may actually be lower than 25th in th SM table but I only looked at the top 25 teams according to FIFA

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions regarding which list is better, whose over-rated and not. My personal view is that the SM generated table is more accurate - Italy deserve their place at the top as world champions, the likes of Mexico and Ivory Coast deservingly higher up. However, England are seemingly over-rated by this table  as perhaps are Russia and Germany are under-rated

Re: SM World Ratings

Romania is underrated too now , but I think that after the next Romania rating change we'll have an 89,5-90 average rating team

some underrated players are Bogdan Lobont , Eugen Trica ,Lucian Goian , Stefan Radu (at Lazio now but he is an 88-89 player) and others;) B)

Re: SM World Ratings

The one thing i would say is that they are hard to compare due to Fifa's rankings being based on national teams' results and SM's ratings based on players' individual performances domestically as well as internationally in real life. However, this is a really interesting thought and post!:)

Re: SM World Ratings

How Do Egypt Fair' date=' Best Team In Africa For Some Time Now.. Altough Its SOme Time Since They Qualified For World Cup.

& Are Ireland The Best Worst team In SM Ratings/Real Life - Any Team Below Them in Fifa Rankings With Better SM Avg 11?

Would Check But Havent Time[/quote']

Well Egypt's SM first XI would yield an average rating of 86.81. Their FIFA ranking is currently 29th and their SM First XI average rating would place them roughly in the same position.

Rep of Ireland on the other hand are rated 36th by FIFA and as you hint above, are rated signicantly higher by SM:

Rep. Ireland - Average SM rating - 89.63

.............................Given (92)................................

Finnan (91)....Dunne (91)...O'Shea (89)....Kilbane (87)

Hunt (88)....Carsley (89)....Ireland (88)...McGeady (90)

...................Keane(92)......Doyle (89).....................

This would have Rep. of Ireland up to 15th in the SM first XI rankings

Re: SM World Ratings

Time to update this with a major championship coming up. Again I looked at the top 25 teams as stated by the FIFA rankings (April 2008), but also looked at some of the slightly lower ranked nations which do better on the SM table:

Argentina - Average SM team rarting - 93.82

......................Abbondanzieri (92).......................

The numbers in brackets represent the points according to the FIFA formula in the FIFA rankings table and the average rating as calculated above for the SM XI rankings table

Interesting to see teams such as Ghana, Israel and USA who are rated by FIFA do not appear on the SM generated table. On the other hand some teams not in the upper echolons of the FIFA rankings do well on the SM table (e.g Serbia). I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions regarding which list is better, whose over-rated and not.

Excellent post, but I would like to add a few teams and make a few changes to the teams that you made (e.g: Nesta & Totti have retired from national duty so they can't be included) These teams are all based on World Soccer, which I believe is very accurate on the tactics...

Re: SM World Ratings

Yeah couple wrong ratings.

Cesar is a 94.

Ayala a 92.

Yep sorry about that. Cesar has been corrected. Ayala has been replaced by Dimichelis (93). :o

Malouda was mentioned in the ratings moths ago and is not in the France team I've put forward this time Moam :)

These ratings are just for fun and represent the best possible team in SM. They in no way are meant to represent what the teams would be in real life

Re: SM World Ratings

The reasoning for this (international average ratings) IMO is because of the leagues the players are playing in, and how well they are playing at club level, as there haven't been any competitive international matches for awhile, the recent ratings updates have been based on club performances.

Also,I think all the players deserve all their ratings for their various nations for what they do achieve at club level but bring a group of great players together doesnt always mean they will play well with each other. The best example of this is England, who probably are the 5th best team in the world, on paper, but struggle to impress when it comes to the crunch and DO underachieve.

So as far as 'on paper' is concerned, that is more like the sm ratings whereas the fifa ratings are based on how they actually all play together & what they achieve.

dutch guys are underated due to playing in a weaker home league.there guys will useally rise when they leave to play in a bigger team in a bigger league such as england/ spain and so on not fair i agree perhaps a strong run in the euro 2008 will help or if some of there teams could progress further in european competion

One thing I noticed from the post of the Dutch team, Ooijer is the lowest rated player (87) and still in the team in RB in front of higher rated players, and he plays in the EPL.

Re: SM World Ratings

One thing I noticed from the post of the Dutch team' date=' Ooijer is the lowest rated player (87) and still in the team in RB in front of higher rated players, and he plays in the EPL.[/quote']

Yes , he is simply underrated. (I am not sure that van basten will play him as rb but there is a high chance. Other underrated player are : Van Persie should be 93-94 ( future 95) Oojer should be atleast 90/91, Bouma rise to 89/90. Boulahrouz is back and fit again if he starts playing again he should rise to his old level (91) If Robben keep on playing he could rise to 92 again. Vennegoor of hesselink played a pretty good season why did he go down?? Sneijder is playing really good for his fisrt season at real should be 94. Afellay is way underrated is one of psv s most importants players and plays almost every match should be 91. Engelaar is playing outstanding this season at twente and is maybe going to schalke next season should be 89/90

ETC ETC
