AEK Athens 0:4 Fenerbahce; Following on from the excellent win in the friendly against Spartak, last night, Fenerbahce travelled to the intimidating Olympic Stadium Athens and returned with an excellent opening day three points. Sevilla off to Best Possible Start

sevilla31levantesd1.png

Sevilla were confident about the win before the game as manager Sam Pooley spoke openly on sky sports news and said this "My players will win, they might draw they might lose but they won't, they will win. We are at home and we are the better team so why should we not win. My players will have a good nights sleep knowing they got off to the best possible start." And the players didn't let Sam Pooley down.

Although Levante took the lead only three minutes into the game through Mustapha Riga. A long range effort from Tommasi bounced just before the keeper and the Sevilla number one, De Sanctis could only parry it away into the path of Riga who smashed the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the six yard box.

Sam Pooley was screaming orders from the touchline none stop, between the first goal and Sevilla's equaliser. The goal came from the Sevilla left back José Crespo who was the lowest rated player on the Sevilla squad. A through ball into the path off Crespo was all he needed, he then ran at the defense, beat one, beat two and then smashed it passed the keeper. Great goal.

(Jose Crespo scores the equaliser after beating two defenders.)

The two sides came out buoyant after the half time break and the turning point in this game was going to be the next goal. Whoever got it was going to get a point out of the game ..... at least. And it was Sevilla who got the goal. A great header from the Sevilla center back gave them the lead after going one nil down.

The third and final goal of the game wrapped up all three points for Sevilla. A great long range effort from Seydou Keita was unsavable. He smashed it into the net from 22 yards out. And for the first time in the game Sevilla manager Sam Pooley actually smiled, after knowing his side had done enough to get all three points.

Palacios joins Strasbourg

344.gif

Strasbourg have added another player to their set of recent signings, bringing in Wigan's Honduran midfield player Wilson Palacios for just over 5 million pounds.

Deveney's say on the signing:

"Wilson is a strong midfield player who gets box to box throughout the 90 minutes, and is someone we have been looking at for a while to cover in the midfield. He is certain to improve soon and im very happy to have been able to bring him in. The deal was very smooth and thanks goes to Wigan for the deal, they were a pleasure to work with."

Strasbourg vs Caen, Match Preview

Season so Far

After the opening weekend success away to Rennes, next up for Luke Deveney's Strasbourg outfit is a home tie against Caen, who also took maximum points on the opening day.

The 3-2 away victory on Saturday was a positive start for Strasbourg, who impressed to come back from 2-0 down to come out victorious in the 5 goal thriller. The confidence will be flowing through Deveney's players, not least of all centre forward Eric Mouloungui, who bagged two clinical finishes in the comeback on Saturday. The forward was seemingly very happy with his side's start to the season when interviewed, having this to say for himself:

"(Translated into English) Well personally i think you will not see many better comebacks this season, a great effort from the boys away from home and down 2-0 so early against a strong Rennes side. On a personal level it was very nice to start the season with two goals, i felt confident with my level of play and i believe that while im partnered with Wason (Renteria), who i have great pleasure playing with, i have a good chance of continuing this scoring form."

The Gabonese attacker caused a lot of problems to the seemingly solid Rennes defence in the second half and if his form continues his cultered left boot is sure to produce the goods many times over.

As previously mentioned, Caen also managed a victory in their opener, grabbing a late 1-0 win over Sochaux with 4 minutes of normal time to spare, star striker Yoan Gouffran notching the winner.

art.gouffran.afp.gi.jpg

Managed by experienced and well known manager Austin, the tie will sure to be a tough one for Strasbourg who are under no illusions about the league as a whole after their opener, knowing that every game this season will be a tough one. Caen were tight and effecient in their first game and could of possibly scored more throughout their 90 minutes.

Players to Watch

From the Strasbourg point of view, the main men to watch, aside from the front two mentioned earlier, could be the two new signings brought in over the past few days by manager Luke Deveney. Highly rated Mexican goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo is likely to make his debut in between the posts for Strasbourg, and experienced Brazilian Arruda Wender is a well known player in Portuguese parts, and should be looked upon as the sort of player to change a game in his side's favour within an instant.

Strasbourg's new Goalkeeper Saucedo

In terms of Caen's key men, onlookers should look no further than key central midfield partnership Benjamin Nivet and Gregory Proment. The experienced midfielders will most certainly be key to Caen this season, forming a very robust but technically sound pairing. On top of this the main man up front is opening day scorer Yoan Gouffran, a young forward with serious potential who has interested certain European sides such as West Ham in recent times.

Predictions

This game has been portrayed by many Media sources as a game that is clearly looking like it will be an extremely tight affair, with the score destined to be a draw. On a personal level i believe that my side can win this game at home, but Caen are no pushovers and will certainly be a tough opponent.

PREDICTION: Strasbourg 2-1 Caen.

First three for Mattis!

Tonight, Espanyol picked up there first win of the season under manager Louis Mattis, 21,000 turned up at the Juegos Mediterraneos to watch the teams play. Espanyol dominated a massive 61% of the possession, but both teams had the same amounts of shots on and off target. Almeria took a shock lead on 17 minutes, a trademark goal from José MANE, with the teams looking to go in at half time with Almeria being 1-0 up, someone needed to do something, and Espanyol done that on 42 minutes, Ivan De La Pena making no mistake from 15 yards as the teams went in level at half time. Espanyol didnt take long to open the scoring in the second half, Ivan De La Pena making it 2-1 with a well placed header and getting his second of the match. And Espanyol went 3-1 up on 57 minutes later, new signing Andrei Arshavin lobbing the ball over the keeper giving Espanyol a vital

three points.

Strasbourg 3-1 Caen

The critics who came out and spoke about this game being destined towards a drab and low-scoring affair were proved massively wrong this evening by Luke Deveney's Strasbourg side, who came out the better from a 4-goal tie shared with Austin's Caen, winning by an impressive 3-1 scoreline. Although the game was never balanced massively in favour of either side at any point within the game, this did not deter from the game's overall quality which was undoubtedly of a good standard, and provided some entertaining play which resulted in the 4 goals being put away tonight. The finishing of Strasbourg proved the difference, as they took their chances clinically and made sure of their seond successive victory at the start of the season.

First blood was for the home side, who struck after just 4 minutes, with right sided midfield player Yacine Abdessadki rising above his marker at the back post to guide home a well placed header beyond the despairing dive of Plante to make the score 1-0. The lead that was developed so early by Strasbourg was extended only 13 minutes later in classy fashion, with Colombian striker Wason Renteria dummying the keeper delightfully after being put through one on one, and he duly slotted the ball into the empty net to complete a sharp start for Deveney's men.

renteria.jpg

Renteria salutes the crowd after his neat finish

With only 406 spare seats in the La Meinau, the crowd was certainly making itself heard and showing strong support for their favoured team in the atmospheric ground, which only added to the game as a whole. The game, as a spectacle, despite Caen's gritty determination, was ended on 62 minutes when Renaud Cohade finished neatly inside the box after good build-up play, and moved Strasbourg into a 3-0 lead. The Caen goal was scored in the 62nd minute by Juan Eluchans, but it turned out to be a consolation as the Strasbourg side used their possession much better over the duration of the 90 minutes.

7842.jpg

Cohade delighted with his goal this evening

New Kids on the Block

The Strasbourg fans both at home and in the ground were eagerly waiting to see manager Luke Deveney's new signing's in action, and both started, and didn't dissappoint. Mexican goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo was on show in between the sticks and made a couple of top drawer saves as well as being generally solid, and other new signing Arruda Wender was especially impressive, showing off his abilty on numerous occasions down the left hand side of midfield. All in all, a very satisfactory debut for both players.

Overall Conclusion

The game was entertaining overall as both side's looked to get the ball down and pass along the deck, but the overall point to look at in this game is the difference between the chances being taken, and the opposition chances being squandered. The game was generally tight but the lack of composure in front of goal from Caen was evident on numerous occasions, especially from the ones player who you would expect the best from up front, Yoan Gouffran, who missed a couple of golden opportunities. Man of the match, despite not getting on the scoresheet this evening, is Renteria's partner in crime up front Eric Mouloungui, who once again showed how much of an asset he is up front, linking beautifully with his team-mates.

Luke Deveney had this brief statement to say after the game:

I'm delighted with the boys again, as i predicted Caen would be a tough side to play against but the finishing was the difference and once again we looked clinical in front of goal. I'm obviously very happy with the start we have had this season and i hope we can continue it against PSG on Saturday.

Strasbourg Vs Paris Saint Germain, Match Review

Saturday night promises to be an entertaining affair at the La Meinau stadium in Strasbourg, between two sides who have started their season at a flying pace.

Recent Form

Strasbourg's season has started off much better than a lot of sceptics would have thought, as they opened their 3-point account immediately with a fantastic comeback win away at Rennes, 3-2. This victory was followed by a good 3-1 midweek victory over Caen, with some very tasty attacking football on show from Luke Deveney's men. This start has many of the Strasbourg critic's thinking twice about their original opinion of Deveney's sides chances, as they look like a side who could certainly get into the top half this season at the very least when playing at the level they are at this moment in time.

Deveney's fellow forumer Keith Fitzsimons is the man at the helm of Saturday's opponent's Paris Saint Germain, who have also started the season strongly, although they admittedly have a stronger squad than Strasbourg and have also made good additions in recent times. Fitzsimons is a well-known and experienced manager and his side has so far won 2 from 2 this season just like Deveney's outfit, so both sides will be looking to continue their 100% percent record in Strasbourg on Saturday night.

Players to Watch

Despite the home advantage of Strasbourg this weekend, the realisation is that Paris Saint Germain are the stronger side overall and will be definitely looked at as favourites on Saturday despite the fact that both teams are yet to drop points in the league.

PSG possess some gifted players who are looking sharp once again at the start of this season, and the main man you think of when looking at their key players has to be Jerome Rothen. The French left midfielder has always been blessed with good ability on the ball and a telling cross into the danger area, and he will surely be a big threat to the Strasbourg back line once again in this particular fixture. Despite now being 30 years old, the wide man is still a big threat for PSG and has not lost his uncanny ability of changing a game when he is needed the most. As well as Rothen, the main man at the back and the club captain is Columbian international centre back Mario Yepes. Still looking ageless at 32, the imposing defender has still looked very strong at the start of this season and is still key to PSG's experienced back line.

Mario_Yepes800x600_565724.jpg

Columbian rock at the back for PSG

On the other side, Strasbourg have their two key players thus far in the forward positions, with both Wason Renteria and Eric Mouloungui causing big problems up front so far and scoring 4 goals already between them. The whole team is obviously performing well but the front 2 are tucking away the chances and doing their job especially well.

mouloung.PV__.JPG

Mouloungui impressing so far this season

Game Prediction

This game promises to be entertaining enough with both sides showing their ability to play attacking Football at the best of times, and i feel that a few goals could certainly be scored on Saturday. The game is there for the taking but i have no doubts that PSG will be my toughest opponents so far, and any point out of this game will be well-earned.

Deveney was quoted when speaking to BBC Sport:

This game will undoubtedly be a tough encounter against a very efficient and experienced PSG side who have a strong manager at the helm. I do however believe that we can give them a tough game and i look forward to the game this Saturday.

Strasbourg 1-1 Paris Saint-Germain

The undefeated start to the season for Strasbourg has continued this evening with a 1-1 draw at home to Paris Saint-Germain, although they were very lucky to have escaped from the game with a point.

PSG were very impressive at keeping the ball under pressure throughout the game, holding 62% of the possession over the ninety minutes, which probably merited an away three points for Fitzsimon's outfit if it wasn't for some slack finishing which did ultimately take away 2 points they could of taken from the La Meinau stadium. The scoring was in fact completed after just 11 minutes, as certainly wasn't as entertaining as many would of thought considering the sort of play the two sides were producing in their first two games. The opener was notched inside the first minute of the game, with central midfielder Renaud Cohade scoring a good chip although he was helped along the way by a slack piece of goalkeeping from experienced stopper Laundreau. The reply from Fitzsimon's experienced outfit was almost immediate though, as they fired right back into the home side and the impressive Jeremy Clement was the man the level the scores, scoring a strong header which flew past the hapless Cassard.

After the early pair of goals scored by the two sides, the game ebbed and flowed well at times, but the superb game that many expected failed to deliever. The game had occasionial flashes of brilliance underneath the general amount of cramped midfield play, most notably a outstanding bicycle kick for the man of the moment Clement, which just flashed wide of the far upright with the goalkeeper well beaten. Wason Renteria and Eric Mouloungui, the front pairing so threatening thus far in the league this season, were somewhat stifled today by an admittedly experienced defence once again led well by the ever-present Mario Yepes, and the chances weren't there for the Strasbourg men as they have been so far. Despite the general dominance of PSG, Strasbourg were still determined and compact when under extreme siege from a well-drilled away side led by fellow forumer and well-respected manager Keith Fitzsimons.

The man of the match award went to goalscorer and key midfielder Renaud Cohade, who held the centre of the Strasbourg side together against PSG's flowing movement, and before all this, he managed to score a decent finish very early on which gave his side a point.

375517.jpgmom.gifMan of the Match - Renaud Cohade

Luke Deveney was interviewed immediately after the Ligue 1 tie that took place earlier, and he had this to say about his side's draw:

I feel as though we were easily playing the best side we have met so far this season, and a point is really a good result for us after the way the game spanned out. We dug in well when under pressure from PSG, and Renaud has got us another important goal which has given us another unbeaten game. Of course next week's game away to Lyon will be possibly the hardest game of our season, but we are ready for the challenge, and we want to play against the best so this will be our chance to show what we can do on one of the biggest stages in world Football.
