Cruz Azul News

Transfers In

  • Peter Lovenkrands - 8.5m (Schalke 04)

  • Daniel Aranzubia - 5.1m (Athletic Bilbao)

  • Guille Franco - Loan (Villarreal)

Transfers Out

  • Felix Gonzalez - 500k (Bristol City)

  • Juan Daniel Rodriquez - 397k (Mladost Apatin)

  • Jose Ramirez - Free

Cruz Azul manager stated in pre-season that he was in desperate need for a back-up goalkeeper and a centre forward to lead the line this season if Cruz Azul were going to perform to their potential, and he has brought in the two men he needed. Daniel Aranzubia, signed from Athletic Bilbao for 5.1m, was brought in to provide competition for experienced number 1 Goalkeeper Oscar Perez. The Spainish shot-stopper is well-equipped to do a good job when Deveney needs him, and should be a vital member of the squad in the weeks and months to come. Many options were considered for the attacking position that was so badly needed for the Mexican outfit, but first up it was Danish international Peter Lovenkrands who got the nod. Signed from Schalke 04 where he was seen as surplus to requirements, the pacy striker cost 8.5 million and has slotted in well up front in the early part of the season. The third signing brought in by Deveney so far is on loan from Spanish giants Villarreal, and the man who was deemed correct to improve the Azul front line further was Mexican Guille Franco. Moving back to his native country for the season, he is so far partnering Lovenkrands effectively and is looking like a very shrewd loan brought in by Deveney. Despite heavy interest in a number of other targets, notably Atalanta's Tiberio Guarante, no other incoming deals have been struck so far.

On the selling side of things, no-one major has left the club as of yet, with only two squad players leaving so far while commanding a fee. Right midfielder Felix Gonzalez has joined English Divison 2 side Bristol City for 500k, while central defender Juan Daniel Rodriquez is leaving for 397k and joining Mladost Apatin tomorrow. On top of this, Jose Ramirez has left on a free transfer. The bigger names of the Cruz Azul squad have drawn obvious transfer attention, with Torrado being enquired about and bid for regularly, but the club captain is going nowhere. As well as captain fantastic, young starlet Martin Galvan has been receiving some serious attention from clubs all across the world, but he has officially been made unavailable for transfer, with many at Azul believing he could be a massive player for them in the future.

In terms of transfers in the future, Cruz Azul are still on the lookout for potential players to improve the 1st team squad, with a numerous set of targets being slowly but surely put together. 88+ in any outfield position will be considered by the gaffer Deveney, who is confident of a good season in Mexico.

First win for United

2.gifAston Villa 2 - 5 Manchester Utd49.gif

Winston was determined to get his United team winning as soon as possible and he thought that a game against Aston Villa would be a great place to start. Winston recently parted ways with out of favor striker Louis Saha who moved to Dynamo Kyiv with Ukranian defender Andriy Nesmachnyi coming in.

Andriy Nesmachnyi was named in the starting lineup for tonights match as Nemanja Vidic and Silveira Juan suspended and the Ukranian International was named man of the match. He scored the opener for United after 17 minutes to give Man Utd a well deserved lead.

Man Utd ended the first half 3-1 up after Scholes and another goal by Nesmachnyi made it 3-0 to United only for Martin Laursen to pull a goal back for Villa just before half time.

Villa pulled another goal back early in the second half through John Carew to give United a few worries. The United players seemed to get a boost from Villa coming back and started to play great football, it was only a matter of time before they extended their lead and with that Antonio Di Natale scored to put United 4-2 up and really looked like they would go on and win.

Just to rub it in, Di Natale scored his second and Man Utd's 5th to seal a good win and make Man Utd intent for this season clear.

Cruz Azul News

Cruz Azul 1-2 River Plate

Cruz Azul fell to their second defeat of the season yesterday evening at the Azul stadium, with impressive Argentinian outfit River Plate winning away from home by 2 goals to 1.

River Plate are the sort of team that can always keep the ball well, as they are blessed with many technically gifted players who are so comfortable on the ball. These qualities were displayed last night in an intense atmosphere in Mexico, and they showed that they could keep the ball well despite the level of pressing by the home side, who were looking for some more points to add to the 3 they earned against San Lorenzo last week. Although possession Football was the reason River Plate ultimately come away with the three points, their final product wasn't of the highest quality and Azul actually managed to find the target more times with their efforts than the eventual winners. Cruz Azul were the side to strike first after just six minutes when pacey left midfielder Jaime Lozano put away a good header after good work from the right hand side of midfield. For a 15 minutes period after the goal, Azul had general dominance and could of scored again, but failed to make it count, and they were made to pay.

With 28 minutes gone, the left hand side of River Plate's back three, Eduardo Tuzzio, was the unexpecting player to find himself through on goal after a lucky deflection, but he took his goal brilliantly, rounding an advancing Perez and notching from a tight angle. This goal clearly gave the Argentinans a refound confidence, and they began to take control with half-time approaching. Passing the well accurately and neatly, River were looking to take the lead before half-time, and they managed to do so despite the desperation of the Azul players to get to the break level. The easiest of three goals fell to wide man Christian Giminez, who tapped in from 3 yards out after a cracker of a strike hit the bar and fell comfortably to him. AFter the flurry of first half goals, the second half did not follow suit goal-wise, but there was some chances and the standard of Football, not just in this game, but in the divison as a whole, is top quality. Cruz Azul couldn't claw their way back into the tie, and so a great away win for River Plate was the final result that many fancied. Man of the match was given to River's left midfielder and goalscorer Christian Giminez, who tormented the right hand side of Cruz Azul all evening.

282.gifmom.gif Man of the Match, Christian Gimenez.

Interviewed after the game, Cruz Azul manager Luke Deveney was dissapointed with the defeat but hopeful for the future:

I felt as though we didn't have the same will to win as River today, and we didn't hold onto the ball long enough to create enough chances to win the game. Saying this, River were technically good as per usual, and were probably worth their 3 points. Next up we have got Fluminense away, another tough tie, but the boys will be well prepared for a tough tie in Brazil.

Chelsea News Update

Jewiss has decided to talk about his times at Chelsea finally, after giving up on posting for a while and just observing, other people. At the start of the season the onus was on Jewiss to bring in some quality, which, eben he admits he failed on, 'A lot of managers wanted to take my players in deals for some of theirs, that was something i wasn't looking forward to doing as i feel i dont need to break apart my squad just to make it better, i wanted to build on it, and because of that i have signed players who i think will play ok in the cups, possibly not starting but i plan to give every player a game this season.'

First player in this season was Milan Stepanov from FC Porto fro a bargain fee of 9million, the 87 rated player, is going to be usec for a back up role at Chelsea, where he will a few games. Jewiss said, 'I saw him play at Porto a few times, admittedly he is not good enough to play right back all the time, but we now have sufficient back-up, as he can do a good job there'.

Milan had this to say about his joining of Chelsea, 'I am very pleased to play under such a great manager and at a great club in Chelsea'- he obviously had way too much to drink!

Next in was Gabi from Zaragoza for a minimal fee of 6.5million, he is a great young player, who will do well when he comes into the side to play but te liklihood, is thin as he has to get ahead of Cole, SWP and Malouda. Jewiss sadi this 'sometmes i like playing Cole throught the middle, and therefore we would need a back up winger, gabi will provide us with this', Gabi basically repeated what Stepanov had to say, and when asked, Why come to England to play, he replied, 'the girls', Gabi is obviously gay! jewiss is obviously trying to diversify his squad.

Ziegenbein, was the next player to join for a fee of 1.9million from TSV Munchen. Jewiss discribed him as the new Pele, and later retracted his words after seeing the look his mate Pele gave him. Ziegenbein, but for the purpose of this interview we shall call him Z, is also a top youngster and accordiing to Jewiss 'has a lot of potential', we could not really get a word in with Z, who is said to be struggling with German, and thereofre, asked Genious Jewiss to translate 'Im sehr glücklich um hier jetzt zu sein'. Yes Z we all agree!

Last player in for the time being was Dong Fangzhuo, the reason for this signing is that, jewiss felt Chelsea needed their own Sun Ji Hai, Jewiss ahd this to say, 'Japan and China have massive populations, if they see a Chinese okayer playing for Cheslea, they will al buy the shirts and we will be rolling in the money, joking aside, i think he is a good player and he was very unlucky at man U not to have more games as he has plenty of potential which we will look to exploit.' Dong had this to say ' 我是很高興的'

So far this season Chelsea are unbeated including a win over Manchester United, which jewiss is extremely pleased about.

Cruz Azul's Failings Continue

Fluminense 3-1 Cruz Azul

A terribly lacklustre performance from Cruz Azul, not for the first time this season, resulted in a deserved 3-1 defeat this evening at the Maracana. A monster attendance of 88,329 crammed into the monumental ground, but witness a pretty poor game as Azul failed to turn up, and offered no real resistance as the Brazilian outfit were allowed to play their football at will, and control the game.

Goals from Luiz Washington, Damian Escudero and Topuz Mehmet in the first half were easily enough to kill off the game before the half-time whistle, and mean that the game's second-half wasn't really an entertaining spectacle as such, due to Azul's willingness to seemingly accept their fate, regardless of the attempts of manager Luke Deveney to get them going from the sideline. Even Cesar Villaluz's 77th minute conselation was barely deserved, and the fact of the matter is that Cruz Azul will have to drastically improve their overall performance and determination on the field if they are to cope with the demands of such a strong league across America. Their is clealry true ability within the squad, and good signings, particularly up front, have been made, but for one thing the distribution to the strikers was awful this evening along with the agression of the side and i'm sure Deveney will give his best to attemp to rectify such problems. This is of course not taking anything away from a good Fluminense side, who passed us to death and were generally very good, but we could of offered much, much more. Man of the match for the evening went to goalscorer Luiz Washington for his all-round quality performance.

295.gifmom.gif - Man of the Match, Luiz Washington.

Luke Deveney spoke to Sky Sports after the game and had this to say about his side:

I am quite simply shocked and dissapointed at the way the players performed tonight. We always knew it would be a tough game against such a technically gifted outfit like Fluminense, but to not compete and offer anything going forward like that was very poor indeed. I will be having stern words about this game, because that really did make me wonder why i am here managing if thats what's going to be produced by such gifted players.

Chelsea Romp Past Pompey To Make 4 Wins In 4

Chelsea turned up last night expecting another performance and they were not disappointed, as they saw there side romp home to another victory. However they did not have it all their own way as Pompey managed to hold them for the first half dispite seeing only 38% of the possession, credit has got to go to manager, Joe robinson for holding on that long, but, as Chelsea came out in the second half the played with a lot more swagger and their class showed by far, as Essien and Carvalho pipped in with important goals which saw Chelsea take the game beyond the reach and capability of the Pompey men.

A lot of credit must go down to the manager, who seemed to be unhappy with the performance at the half time whistle, even though Chelsea were all over Pompey. He said this, 'I couldnt believe that they were holding us, we were all over them and we couldnt stick the thing in the net, it was silly, the ammount of chances we had, yet we couldnt put one away'.

Lampard gave us an insight into what the manager said at half time, 'He wasnt very happy with the chances we had missed, and he just looked us in the eye and said, we can do this, we have th beating of them, just go out there and show them what you have got'.

At the Full time whistle, Jewiss was extremely pleased with the result and he said that his men 'showe great character when it wasnt necessarly goin ghtere way for a time being'.

Cruz Azul find some form

Cruz Azul 5-0 Lanus

Cruz Azul managed to find some of their best finishing form this evening to beat Argentinian side Lanus 5-0. Despite only having a small amount of shots on target, the difference this evening was the clinical manner that Azul put away there chances and put a decent Lanus side to bed. 36,053 were present at the Azul stadium to witness Cruz Azul's best performance this season by a comfortable margin, in which goals were scored at regular intervals throughout the ninety minutes.

Joaquin Beltran, the Azul central defender who was tonight filling in for the injured Joel Huiqui, managed a sensational first-half feat as he managed to notch two quality finishes that a centre forward would be proud of. On the 25th and 40th minutes of the game, he finished cooly after being found in an unusually advanced position, and gave the Mexicans a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break. Lanus stars Diego Valeri and Jose Sand struggled to get the grips with the game throughout, and couldn't manage to haul their under-par team through a tough away fixture, which ultimately meant a crumbling team fell in the 2nd half to Azul.

After just 7 minutes of the second half, recalled centre forward Miguel Sabah, taking part in an enterprising front line with Peter Lovenkrands and Guille Franco, took his chance brilliantly as he sent a crisp header flying into the roof of the net to put the game, as a spectacle, to bed. Danish speedster Lovenkrands added to the impressive goal tally for the night as he finished neatly after rounding a sprawling Bossio, and the 5-0 scoreline was completed with just 3 minutes of normal time to be completed, when impressive young wide man Cesar Villaluz nodded home a quality cross from the wing. All in all, a massive improvement this week from recent poor performances, which will stand Azul in much better stead for weeks to come. Playing against a good Lanus side tonight, they showed that they can perform to a high standard and will surely be desperate for the next game after producing such a strong win this evening. Man of the match went to stalwart goalkeeper Oscar Perez, who, despite not having as much to do as expected, produced a couple of world-class saves as well as his usual consistent and all-round goalkeeping.

443.gifMan of the match - Oscar Perez

Luke Deveney was interviewed in a much better mood tonight after his side's performance, and he had this to say:

I feel as though what we got across to the boys at training this week definitely rubbed off on the players, they were so much sharper in possession and were much more agressive all over the field. As well as this, our front men looked a real threat this week unlike recent times, and the defence did a great job against such a threat as Jose Sand. A good performance, but room for improvement as we all know, but we will go on to the next fixture with improved confidence for sure.
