Re: Euro 2008

This is the best 11 according to sky sports:-Euro best 11

I pretty much totally agree with this team as it is based on how well the players have played and is not influenced by how far their teams have reached in the Euro. Maybe they could have put Srna instead to Modric and Casillas or buffon instead of Boruc but otherwise i really like the team. Robben deserves to be in it imo :)

this is a joke right? sorry mate, but when I read how the team was picked and looked at choice #1, #2 and #3 I just closed the window.

Re: Euro 2008

Happy To See Boruc there As I Said During The Group Stage He Had Been Fantastic..

I JUST Hope Celtic Can Keep Him, But 8-10 Million & A Decent Replacement Will Surly See Him Leave Especially If Arsneal Come Calling

Having Ruud There Surprised Me A Bit i Must Say, Altiugn Only Because I Ecspected Him To Hold The Dutch Side Together, As It Turned Out They Performed Well & He Was Outshone By 2 Attacking Midfielders & Did The Gritty Work As Hes Always Done

How Rooney Can Have a 96 Like Ruud

Boulahrouz got the sympathy vote!!

I agree with Melbguy .... bit of a joke to include Modric, Boruc and Boulahrouz in the team imho. Robben was good when he played all 20 mins of Euro 2008. :P

I think it's typical english BS bias not to include a SINGLE german player ... but then what does one expect when it comes to football knowledge of a country that failed to qualify! lol :D

Cheers,

Herby

I agree putting Modric and Brouc was a goof up but otherwise i think the team is fine. Maybe Anyukov or Lahm in place of Boulahrouz(but he did play pretty well imo).

Robben was brilliant in the 108 min that he played. Scored 1 goal and got atleast 2 or 3 assists. He was the best player on the filed when he played imo. :)

Maybe Ballack or Podolski instead of Modric but otherwise the team is fine imo. ;)

There are loads of players who deserved to be mentioned and everyone will have his/her own opinions. U do have to chose only 11 players so considering all that the team put out is not that bad. ;)

Re: Euro 2008

I think they have selected the best players in comparison to the amount of minutes they played (I've stated it wrongly, haven't I?) . So, if a guy played 2 games and gave a 9/10 performance in both, and another played 6 games with an average of 8.8 in all - the guy with the average of 9 would be selected ahead.

In fact Modric and Boruc both had excellent tournaments, and both shone for their teams. It's only because they didn't get far that you guys are putting them down - the truth is that they were the stars of the group stages.

OMG!! This is a total joke by Sky Sports!!

So Turkey, Germany and Russia all make it to the semi finals and not 1 players from any of these countries are in the team. I totally disagree with that. I mean 3 of the top 4 teams didn't have 1 player in it and countries like Poland did. Unbelievable.

I'm not laughing.

Boruc was the reason Poland played all 3 group stage games for something.

Fine' date=' it was a [u']bad[/u] joke.

And yes Boruc played well, but not to be the best goalkeeper in the tournament. I mean he made on average 5 saves a game. That's not that amazing. In comparison to like Akinfeev who made (on average) 9.6 saves a game. I'm not saying Akinfeev should have gotten the spot, I'm saying Boruc shouldn't.

Mainly I'm actually saying that there should be players from Turkey, Germany or Russia in there. I mean they were all in the semi finals and Germany in the finalss!! OMG!!

Re: Euro 2008

Well, ignoring the defence, Sky Sports' best XI is much better than the 'official' best XI. Van Bronckhorst at LCB??? That's just stupidity. The guy played well, but he can play on the left of a flat back 4, left wing-back, or maybe at a stretch left mid... he can NOT play on the left of a back 3. Then there's Ramos. Maybe I'm wrong, but didn't he just give the ball away for half the tournament? He was one of Spain's worst players imo (the only 1st team player who was worse than him was Puyol). Boulahrouz was probably Holland's best defender, so I won't argue too much there. I don't think he was as good as Goian, Ignashevich and Servet though.

agree fully about Ramos...

Just to be clear.. that IS NOT SkySports top 11, it's SkySports viewers top 11.... and we know where they come from:rolleyes: so into the bin it goes;)

Re: Euro 2008

No defence is perfect Without a Goalkeeper.

What I'm saying is Poland's defence isn't great is it? And against Austria if It wasn't for Boruc they could have been 5 or 6 nil down in the first half.

But they went into half time One Nil up.

And Klasnic's goal against Croatia, Where was the marking!!

And against Germany their first goal was just a tap In, Two on the goalkeeper, He should have just lay down its obvious there were going to score.

Germany's second goal, well nothing much he could do Like Pavlyuchenko's header against Spain.

A rocket.

Re: Euro 2008

Spanish dominate users' all-stars

Xavi is not merely a great player, he appears to be a clairvoyant as well. "We’ll rise above ourselves," Spain’s diminutive midfield pivot exclusively told FIFA.com ahead of the quarter-finals at UEFA EURO 2008, which came to its glorious conclusion just over a week ago.

Spain’s richly-deserved 1-0 triumph over Germany in the final sparked frenetic celebrations and also provided yet another highlight for Alonso himself, as he was later named official Player of the Tournament. Luis Aragones’ free-scoring side clearly made a big impression on users of FIFA.com, who picked no fewer than six Spaniards in the all-star team compiled from responses to our latest Have Your Say forum discussion. And admiration was not confined to our Spanish-language edition either, as the results were replicated by English-, German- and French-speaking users too.

Spanish majority

The definitive all-star team features no fewer than six players who starred for the new continental champions, namely: Barcelona duo Xavi and Carles Puyol, Real Madrid pair Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos, Marcos Senna of Villarreal and Valencia hitman David Villa. The Spanish six all turned in magnificent displays at the continental showdown in Switzerland and Austria, underscored by the fact that each player received the most nominations in his position in all four FIFA.com language editions.

Only one other national team supplied more than a single player to our users’ all-star team, and that was beaten finalists Germany, praised for carrying the fight to the technically superior Spanish right to the end. Midfield general Michael Ballack of Chelsea and Bayern Munich left-back Philipp Lahm both attracted enough mentions to make the team.

Recognition for Sneijder and Arshavin

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Lahm’s team-mate at national and club level, finished just behind another skilled and inventive roving midfielder, Wesley Sneijder. The Real Madrid man initially appeared set to spearhead a glorious and memorable charge to the European summit, only for a dream to die in spectacular fashion in the quarter-finals. Yet despite his EURO ending in deep disappointment, Sneijder netted one of the best goals of the tournament and was duly elevated to our users’ all-star team.

The man largely responsible for the Netherlands’ sudden and surprising exit was Andrei Arshavin. Fresh from collecting UEFA Cup honours with Zenit St. Petersburg, Arshavin led Russia to the last four in a convincing show of evidence that one of world football’s sleeping giants is in the process of awakening. The Zenit goal-getter thus earned a place alongside Villa in our users’ all-star team. The line-up is completed by Portugal centre-half Pepe, who finished just ahead of Turkey and Galatasaray stopper Servet Cetin to hand Real Madrid the largest single-club contingent with four nominations.

Imagination running wild

Curiously, the nominations featured a sprinkling of big-name footballers who may not have counted on being among the suggestions for any line-up based on the recently-concluded tournament. Alessandro Nesta, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole and Mahamadou Diarra all received glowing tributes from Morocco-based m3aizow, although the four men in question will at best have observed the goings-on in Austria and Switzerland on TV. A number of users named the entire Turkey or Russia teams, while Algerian contributor Abdou10 came up with the most original suggestion for a EURO 2008 all-star line-up: "Casillas and me, Abdou!"

The FIFA.com users’ all-star team:

Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas

Defenders: Sergio Ramos, Carles Puyol, Pepe, Philipp Lahm

Midfielders: Marcos Senna, Michael Ballack, Xavi Hernandez, Wesley Sneijder

Forwards: David Villa, Andrei Arshavin
