Di Natale finally got his second on 39 minutes, the Italian beating his marker from the corner and heading the the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net. But this goal was short lived as Chelsea made it 3-3 one minute later, Ashley Cole with a shot from a acute angle which deflected into the United goal. The score was 3-3 at the break.

After the victory against Portsmouth in the English Shield Round 4 on Monday, Louis Mattis's Chelsea faced a tuff match against Gazza Thomas's Liverpool in the league on Wednesday night. Mattis knew a victory away from home would be great for the squad's morale and it would keep Chelsea hot on Tottenham's tail. Chelsea dominated 58% possession, with 3 out of 13 shots on target.

The game started, and Chelsea could of been 1-0 up within 15 minutes, Joe Cole diving at the near post, only to be denied by the woodwork. Chelsea should of scored another two minutes later, a 25 yard rocket from Claudio Pizarro hitting the crossbar. Chelsea finally took the lead in the 25th minute, French striker Karim Benzema who showed great composure to finish. Chelsea should of doubled the lead in the 28th minute, J. Cole chipping the Liverpool keeper only to see his shot hit the crossbar. Liverpool could of been back into the game in the 37th minute, defender Jose Boswinga with a snapshot which was parried away by Chelsea keeper Petr Cech. Chelsea went 2 up in the 41st minute, Benzema with his second with a amazing goal. Didier Drogba put Chelsea 3 up one minute later, the Ivorian rising majestically and heading the inswinging corner into the net. The score was 3-0 to Chelsea at the break.

Liverpool pulled two goals back in the space of three minutes next, the first from German International and ex-Chelsea player Michael Ballack, the German beating two defenders and slotting home a great solo effort. The second from young Brazilian talent Carneiro Keirrison lashing the ball into the back of the net from 15 yards. Liverpool could of leveled the game in the 73rd minute, but a overhead kick from Jamie Carragher shaved the top of the crossbar. Chelsea should of secured the three points in the 87th minute, but a rebounded shot from Didier Drogba went over, the score finished 3-2 to Chelsea, they remain three points behind Ben Reado's Tottenham Hotspur. Up next for Chelsea is Crystal Palace in the league.

Reading team news

Alex Thom has returned as Reading manager in style. After a first season with the club in where he lead the royals to promotion to the premier league and saw his side come runners up to chelsea in the English cup, the Reading manager had to step asside for personal reasons. After a break Alex Thom saw spells at QPR and Ipswich town, but with a Reading team relagated back to the championship and struggling in the bottom 3 at the start of the new season saw the old Reading boss return to Berkshire and he returned in style, with 3 wins and a draw in his first 4 games back in charge, putting the royals back up in the playoff places where they hope to remain all season.

Ladder:

laddergc17manuarse.jpg

Recent History:

10th January, 2009 (Season 2 Turn 21) - Manchester United def. by Arsenal, 2-1

5th November, 2008 (Season 2 Turn 2) - Arsenal def. by Manchester United, 3-0

This match will see the return of Arsenal Manager, WillC who was away on holidays for the past month!

The Arsenal Perspective:

Okay, lets not beat around the bush, both of these sides are capable of a top 4 finish however their current ladder positions prove that they are far from it. Manchester United currently sit on 11th with just 2 wins on the board. Also with 2 wins is Arsenal, sitting in the relegation zone with 6 losses.

It's fair to say that both teams have been very disappointing so far this season. Their two wins have been unconvincing and against sub-par opposition, and their losses have been typically one-sided affairs. Chelsea humiliated Manchester United by 5 goals earlier this month and Arsenal have faired no better, going down to the spurs 3-0 last week. It will be very interesting to see how both of these teams bounce back after suffering such big mental blows. Just 10 rounds in, the possibility of either Arsenal or Manchester winning the title seems to be near impossible with current leaders, Tottenham, still yet to record a loss.

This is the type of match which a team needs to win if they want to make up some ground and feature in next seasons SMFA Shield. This is two bottom half teams hoping to make it into the 8 and to get there you really need to beat the bottom half teams. The big advantage Arsenal have is the game is at Emirates Stadium. Arsenal have won their two matches at home and have looked much better at home than away. This is another reason why this is a must win game for Arsenal if they think they are going to make the top 8 this year. Manchester United will be looking for their first win since the 11th of April this weekend, which could propel them into the top 8.

What the stats tell us

Arsenal

• 18th in Goals For

• 11th in Goals Against

Just 11 goals in 10 games is simply not good enough. After scoring the most goals last season, star strikers Luis Fabiano and Keane have managed a combined total of just 3 goals this season. Arsenal will need a big form lift from both of these guns if they're to get out of the relegation zone.

Manchester United

• 11th in Goals For

• 6th in Goals Against

It's no secret that Manchester United have been leaking goals left, right and center all season long. Guys like Vidic and Alves are still not match fit and may be late withdrawals which may spell trouble for United's defence on Saturday.

The Keys to Victory

The Key Forward Battle – Fabiano and Keane v Toni and Pato looks good on paper and the duo who capitalizes on their opportunites will most likely get the positive result.

Dominating the wings - Arsenal boasts the best wingers in the world in Ronaldo and Ribery and expect both of them to dominate their directly opposed players. United's wingers of Bentley and Morales will need to be on their game and provide as much pressure on Ronaldo and Ribery and not allow them to dictate play.

Winning the captain's battle - Arsenal's Fabregas or United's Gerrard. Whichever one of these captains can step up and have the most infuence by providing quality ball to their strikers will go a long way in claiming the 3 points on the night.

Skills – both teams were pretty poor skills-wise last weak and whichever team can come out and hit targets as well as minimise turnovers I think will win the game. Guys like Isla, Petre and Kombarov must put in a good performance otherwise they may be dropped with Arsenal's manager publicaly stating that a blooding of youngsters is on the cards.

Defensive pressure – this is a key element in today’s game and whichever team pressures the other most effectively wins the game 9 times out of 10. Arsenal have been a good tackling team but they have not put on much “frontal pressure” recently and in their losses are not pressuring the receivers enough. They are marking space in their zone rather than the men that move into that space. Arsenal are a more physical team than United and might be able to overpower them if they can get them in the clinches. To do that they need to work both harder and smarter.

The Changes

For Arsenal

After the disappointing loss to Coventry City on Tuesday, it wasn't a question of 'if' players were getting dropped, it was 'how many?'

IN: Petre, Altidore, Castro

OUT: Bovo (sus), Gallas, Echouafni

Teams have not yet been finalized so more changes prior to the start of play is a possiblity

The Result

With Arsenal's manager returning from holidays quicker than initially thought, expect Arsenal to come out firing in the first half. However, with guys like Ribery, Ronaldo and Fabregas all NMF, United should be able to take control in the latter stages of the game and secure a vital point in a very close encounter.

2-2

Reading team news

150px-Reading_badge.png

New boy does good

Reading continued their good run under their new boss with another win, this time over Sheffield united. The Royals took the lead in the first minute at the Madejski through a Kevin Doyle strike, however the game was all about Reading new boy Christian Noboa who marked his debut in the English championship with a man of the match performance, which also saw him get on the score sheet with a goal on the half hour mark. The 2 goals were enough to put the game out of reach for Sheffield and the game ended 2-0 to the Royals, keeping them 5th in the league.

Transfer news

The Reading boss wasted no time in strengthening his promotion hopes and on the same day that new boy Noboa made his first appearance for the Royals, another south American arrived in Berkshire in the form of Paraguayan midfielder Victor Caceres. With the 2 new signings, the Reading boss said that "he is very confident that his team is now strong enough to challenge for a promotion place and hopes that with Caceres making his debut on wednesday night in a tough game away against Birmingham that the current run of good results will continue."

The Special One returns

Adam Gutteridge has returned to football after having to leave Benfica for personal reasons. It was a very successful period at Benfica for Gutteridge who won 2 league titles, 1 Portuguese Cup and the Charity Shield, which saw him get 199. points in 65 games. He has returned with French Side, OGC Nice. Nice currently lie 5th in the league, and with Gutteridge returning full of enthusiasm, the french sides' supporters will be very optimistic for a european place next year. Gutteridge hasnt got ahead of himself however and has stated that hes looking for a top 10 finish this year, as he finds his feet at the club.

'I'm very happy to be at Nice, the whether is fantastic here and i have a villa just down the road. I am especially looking forward to battling with friend Bowen who is manager of Lyon, and although they have much bigger resources, I will be looking to challenge them in a couple of seasons.'
