There wasn't much media coverage of Ben Turner's departure from Valencia, as Ross Philp took up the reigns at the underachieving Spanish giants. Philp was happy with the already acquired Karim Benzema and Dieumerci MBokani, and made on transfer since he arrived. Spanish forward David Villa left for Zenit, as Tymoschuk and Arshavin arrived in Spain. And in his first match in charge, goals from David Villa and Baraja sealed a 2-1 win away at Getafe. Philp's second match in charge was at home to new boys Sporting Gijon last night. New signing Tymsochuk started, as did ex-Standard Liege forward Mbokani as Philp looked for three points in the match.

Dieumerci Mbokani also grabbed a double in the first half was Raul Albiol scored too, leaving Valencia four goals to nil up at half time. Gerard Autet got one back for the visitors, and then Hidalgo scored for Sporting Gijon either side on Angulo's second goal. Karim Benzema struck on 86 minutes as Valencia sit joint top.

Navas set to make Barca debut

Jesus Navas will make his Barcelona debut tonight against Numancia just 24 hours after joining from Sevilla. Barca have been left without hardly any players to fill the positions out wide and Navas was signed in a deal which saw Seydou Keita and Eidur Gudjohnson move to Sevilla. With Aleksandr Hleb back from his suspension he'll move into an attacking midfield role alongside Lionel Messi, with Xavi set to continue on the left. Navas' inclusion means there's no place for Thierry Henry. Barca are still looking to get rid of Eric Abidal, Gabriel Milito and Henry but Hleb and Samuel Eto'o have found themselves taken off the transfer list.

Cambridge United continue their brilliant run

After winning both of their first matches 2-0, Cambridge United travelled to Mansfield Town yesterday to see if they could continue their fine form. They ended up winning 5-2 in a brilliant performance from the whole team. Goals from Paul Carden(1), Esteban Zapata (26) who was making his debut, Wayne Hatswell (34), Albert Celades (67), and Andy Parkinson (86) helped Cambridge on the way to a great win. Cambridge now sit top of Division 5 alongside Wycombe Wanderers with a 100% record, only conceding 2 goals in 3 games, and scoring 9. Shola Ameobi remains United's top goal scorer with 2 goals in 3 games.

Valencia 2-1 Real Betis

standard.JPG

Dieumerci Mbokani (pictured above) helped make it nine point from nine for his Valencia side as they beat Real Betis 2-1 at the Mestalla last night. The Congolese forward, playing instead of the injured Andrei Arshavin, scored yet another goal in a Valencia shirt on 44 minutes of last night's match. Another of Philp's signings, Anatoly Tymoschuk also got on the scoresheet, with a goal on 84 minutes. That goal was the winner, as the Ukrainian struck after Rafa Sobis levelled for Betis.

La Liga

Osasuna 0-4 Valencia

standard.JPG

It seems that it is going to take a lot to stop stand-in striker Dieumerci Mbokani running riot in La Liga as the Congolese forward just can't stop scoring. The ex-Standard Liege striker is ripping apart the Spanish teams in his wake, with Andrei Arshavin out injured. But with the Russian back to full fitness, it seems he will be edged out the side despite hitting five goals in three games - and despite him scoring twice in the 4-0 win away at Osasuna on Wednesday night. His two goals were in between Sanchez Joaquin's opener, and Anatoly Tymoschuk's late strike as Valencia stayed level on points at the top of the La Lige table with twelve points from 12

SMFA Shield R1

Valencia 1-0 Milan

400x400_KarimBenzemaNew.jpg

In the pick of the round one ties on the opening night of the SMFA Shield, Spanish giants Valencia took on the big guns of Serie A, AC Milan. The Italians came to the Mestalla tonight boasting Ronaldinho, Van Der Vaart, Pirlo and Gattuso and ended up losing to Ross Philp's stubborn Valencia side. Valencia had more possession with the sides almost equal in shots on target - but only one shot mattered as Karim Benzema scored on 81 minutes to give Valencia a one-goal lead in the overall tie.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim bring in experienced mexican keeper oswaldo sanchez on loan from Barcelona(thank you Georgeecfc), and throw him straight into the starting line up for tonights game, due to kick of less than 2 hours after signing for the club.

It is believed that manager Sean Fitzpatrick has sees current keepers ozcan and heaton as contenders for next season, but don't think they are quite up to bundesliga standards yet.

Sanchez is sean's second loan signing following the arrival of Mauricio Isla from Udinese on Thursday.

Real Madrid ON FIRE!

Real madrid made it 7 wins out of 7 in all competitions, Last night they travelled to the estadio reyno de navarra to play espanyol in a poor first half there were no events it was looking like his decision to rest his top players would come back to haunt him with the best chance coming from Madrids Fernando torres who was subsuquently given a rest for the second half. The start of the second half couldnt of been any different with madrid coming out of the blocks like a greyhound, they were rewarded in the 57'th minute when aldrete collected the ball and blasted a long range drive from 30 yards out, after that it was all real madrid the quality showed in a stunning last third with semak scoring in the 66'th minute with a crashing header at the far post ,Amauri then showed his quality in the 69'th minute by collecting the ball in his own half and running half the length of the pitch to exquizitely chip over the keeper WHERE WAS THE DEFENCE!,Reals 4'th came in the 77'th minute when a great passing move was finished at close range from a well advanced semak a cracking team goal , Piatti also got in on the act when he cleverly finished a pull back from delared by rounding the keeper but the real manager refused to get carried away with his team second half performance in his press conference " i refuse to get carried away yes ofcourse i know my team played well second half but we need to keep focused for our Champions league game against zenit hopefully we can make it another succesful week", Real madrid now have played 7 games scored 21 and conceded only a remarkable 1 goal. This result leaves real already 5 points clear with thier closest rivals mallorca on 13 points after 2 draws.

SMFA Shield Round 1

Milan 2-5 Valencia

(Valencia win 6-2 on aggregate)

arshavin.jpg

Valencia manager Ross Philp came under criticism having sold David Villa to Zenit, and came under more pressure after consecutive league losses to Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. But with a 1-0 lead going into the second leg of the first round of the SMFA Shield, it was Valencia's way to silence their critics. Andrei Arshavin (above) done his bit on the night with two goals as Valencia progressed to play Ajax in the second round with the two legs taking place over the next few weeks.

Valencia knew in their minds that if they scored first that they would have a great chance of going through, and so when Andrei Arshavin struck only one minute in, they were on a high. However, they were brought back down to earth as Alexandre Pato levelled on the night only one minute later. The next goal was to be crucial, and when Valencia got it through Joaquin, and then scored again through Benzema, they looked like they were cruising through to the second round. Miguel Angulo scored in the second half, before Van Der Vaart did for the home team, but Arshavin scored his second of the match with two minutes left. Valencia won 6-2 on aggregate against the competition's favourites, and so have sent alarms all around Europe. Philp's second string tomorrow will play Recreativo and look to win.

New Man At Deportivo La Coruna!

New manager was announced on 16th December Kevin Heaton took over after resigning at Paris Saint Germain, Kevin told SMTV "Its a big chance this is no doubt one of the greatest leagues ever, to see where Deportivo were at the bottom of this league with 1 win a place where a team like this shouldn't be, we are 11 points off safety and this is a tough task and i hope the players are up for it" Kevin rested major players like Guardado and Bravo for his first game against Malaga the side that need to be chased.

145_1198102128.gif 2 - 1 154_1190855715.gif

It took only 13 Minutes for Deportivo to take charge after Pablo Amo slotted the ball home, Hidalgo Cristian missed an open net just 5 minutes later which could have killed Malaga of early, Cristian was kicking himself after Malaga equalised on the 19th Minute after the driving the ball into the corner. Chances were squandered until the 37th Minute when Miguel Angel Mista sent the crowd while with a beautiful run finished with a blistering shot. Chances were far from few in the second half as Dudu Aouate stood strong.

A succesful start for Deportivo as the lift off the bottom but still a long way to go.

Deportivo Take 3 Priceless Points!

Deportivo beat Sevilla and Kevin was left red-faced after giving his side no hope, Deportivo carried on with a reserve squad as the team was still NMF, in Kevin's second game his side didn't let him down as they go 5 points behind Malaga and 5 Points from safety, Taborda scoring in the 49th Minute sealed the win but Kevin insists theres a long way to go. "Yeah we can celebrate i've been here for 2 matches and we've won both but we are still so far away from safety, i was hoping with a side this good we can go to Europe but to do that we need to keep winning and keep shocking the La Liga. Some key players will be returning in the next couple of games like Bravo and Guardado who i expect to play first team but when your on a run its hard to change the side"

Bravo Returns To Fire Deportivo To Another Victory!

Deportivo fired 6 past helpless Sporting Gijon as they move 2 points from safety. It took only a minute Deportivo to take a Contraversial lead when Riki apparently offside knocked in but the goal counted, still moaning about the decision they were caught out as Alberto Lopo to slot home and put Deportivo in a commanding position, the match was over 7 minutes in to the match after returning Omar Bravo headed in. Higdalo Cristian made it 4 after only 13 minutes of play with another header.

Sporting found their feet and held Deportivo till half-time but in the second half Deportivo picked it up another level and at the 69 minute point man of the match Higdalo Cristian volleyed home and left Ivan Cueller motionless on the line. Sporting Gijon finally scored on the 80 minuite mark with a diving header from Luis Moran, Omar Bravo made it 6 and sealed an impressive victory for Deportivo, 3 Games and 3 Wins for Kevin in charge of Deportivo.

El Clásico win for Barca as progress in Europe is made

140_1204773136.gif

After a dodgy start to the season, Barcelona have hit form in recent weeks especially over the Christmas period. The past week has seen Mallorca hit for 6 in the Spanish Cup Quarter Final followed up by a 3-2 win at Espanyol. Then on Boxing Day, despite going into the game on just 7 points from their 5 games, goals from Janos Szekely and Rafael Marquez made sure Barca reached the knockout stages of the Champions Cup with a win in Bremen. They went into last night's derby against Real Madrid with Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o and Andres Iniesta able to return though the defence was weakened with Cristian Zaccardo and Andrea Barzagli both starting. 21 year old Rodriguez Pedro was given his first start of the season following his return from a loan spell at Lanus.

Messi's well placed header gave Barca the perfect beginning to the game in the 2nd minute before a thumping drive from Rubens Sambueza drew Madrid level. A brilliant curling shot from Eto'o put Barca back in front soon after and he made it 3-1 with his 8th of the season in the 2nd half. Andres Iniesta's chip made it 4 just after the hour mark before Kaka pulled one back late on but Madrid suffered their first defeat in the league this season.

The win saw Barcelona close the gap at the top to just a single point - Madrid remain top with Villarreal and Barca close behind.

Transfer News

Barca have been busy in the days before Christmas to add some more youth to their squad as 7 more players joined. Jeronimo Barrales (£5.9m), Pavel Golyshev (£1.9m), William Paredes (£5m), Hernan Bernardello (£6.9m), Jamie Mackie (£1.8m), Samuel Ochoa (£900k) and Jesus Molina (£2.2m) all completed moves and were made available to loan for the remainder of the season.

International

Meanwhile, George has this morning become manager of Spain as he admitted it was an offer he just couldn't turn down. Having managed Scotland, Turkey and Brazil before, the appointment came as a surprise with Spain managing 4 points from their 2 qualification games so far. The first game in charge will be away to Nigeria on the 2nd January. Carlos Marchena, David Albelda and Guti have been added to the squad whilst Xabi Alonso has been dropped.
