Harvey 3,234
Re: Gold Championship 48 - Match Report / Transfers Thread Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 1. FC Nurnberg Bayer Leverkusen warmed up for their SMFA Shield Semi-Final on Monday with an emphatic win over 1. FC Nurnberg last night. The result was their seventh consecutive victory in all competitions, and it looks as if they're coming into form at exactly the right time. The night could have been so much better for Leverkusen - if it wasn't for Ivica Olic's 83rd minute winner for Hamburger against Hertha Berlin. That goal meant that Hamburger stayed top on goal difference, while Bayer stay in second place with just five league games to go. Sandwiched in between all of that, manager Jack Harvey has to contend with the SMFA Shield Semi Final Leg 1 match against Getafe on Monday night. The first half was a tight affair and both teams could have been in front going into the break. Nurnberg failed to take their chances when they came and they were punished after 19 minutes. Recently disgraced midfielder Barry Ferguson rose majestically to meet a cross from Neri Cardozo to put 'Werkself' in front. Both keepers produced fine displays in the opening 45 minutes to keep the score at 1-0 going into the second half. Greek striker Theofanis Gekas doubled the lead just two minutes after the whistle. Gekas was left unmarked, and only two yards out he simply couldn't miss. The two goal lead allowed Bayer to relax slightly and they retained possession very well, with Barry Ferguson and Christoph Dabrowski dominating the midfield battlle. Ferguson grabbed his second of the night with just 7 minutes to go, when the ball was pulled back to him he made no mistake from 12 yards. Just before the final whistle, Gekas added the fourth with a simple tap in. The final score may have been a little harsh on Nurnberg but nonetheless Bayer Leverkusen fully deserved the victory. They will now host Getafe on Monday before another league match on Wednesday away at Hertha BSC. Both of those teams are currently filled with 'not match fit' players but Harvey loses more of these games than he wins, which frustrates the young English manager. Harvey will be playing his second string on Monday, prioritising the league over Europe, but says winning both is his aim. Above: Gekas celebrates his second, and Bayer's fourth of the night. .RC
Harvey 3,234
Re: Gold Championship 48 - Match Report / Transfers Thread Bayer Leverkusen Win The League! 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen have won the league title after a 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen at Weserstadion. Leverkusen only needed a single point to guarantee the trophy, but Boubacar Sanogo's 63rd minute goal looked to dampen the away team's chances. Chris Dabrowski equalised just seven minutes later and Bayer hung on to the draw. Their main rivals, Hamburg, also could only manage a draw so a defeat for Leverkusen last night would still have won them the league title. End Of Season Awards Defender of the Year - Michal Kadlec Kadlec has been versatile this year, playing in his favoured role as a left back but filling in at centre back when needed. The Czech international also scored 2 goals this season, one of which was the winner in the penultimate game of the season. Midfielder of the Year - Neri Cardozo Neri Cardozo has played regularly this season, playing 24 out of the 34 played. The Argentine has scored 8 goals and made 5 assists in that time, mainly playing from the left of midfield. Striker of the Year - Theofanis Gekas Theofanis Gekas is Bayer's top goalscorer this season with 12 goals, though that tally would surely be higher if not for a lenghty injury in the middle of the season. Gekas scored some important goals for Bayer Leverkusen and won the man of the match award 6 times. Player of the Year - Rene Adler Rene Adler has played every game this year, with an average performance of 7.62. Bayer had the third best defensive record in the league, and Adler deserves as much credit as the back four. Team of the Year Adler Castro ---- Friedrich ---- Haggui ---- Kadlec Schneider ---- Ferguson ---- Dabrowski ---- Cardozo Gekas ---- Kiessling Bayer Leverkusen now have a long wait until their SMFA Shield Semi Final Leg 2 match against Getafe on the 17th August. The score ended 3-3 in the first leg, so Bayer will travel to Getafe looking to get the away win they need to progress to the final.
Harvey 3,234
Re: Gold Championship 48 - Match Report / Transfers Thread Bayer Leverkusen Into SMFA Shield Final Bayer Leverkusen were celebrating tonight after a stunning 5-1 victory away at Getafe. The teams went in to the match deadlocked, after the first leg in Germany ended three goals apiece. Bayer Leverkusen were at a slight advantage as their season finished almost two weeks ago, while La Liga is still ongoing. In the other semi-final, Independiente progressed at the expense of VfB Stuttgart, beating the German side 2-0 both home and away en route to the final. Leverkusen and Independiente have never played eachother in this competition, and the final promises to be a great occasion. After winning the league just under two weeks ago, Bayer Leverkusen went into tonight's game at Getafe in high spirits. Getafe, who were still slightly suffering with fitness after their league game on Saturday night, started slowly to the match and were made to pay inside eight minutes. German striker Stefan Kiessling was put through one-on-one with Oscar Ustari, and coolly rounded the Argentine goalkeeper before finishing from a tight angle. His strike partner, Theofanis Gekas, was also keen to get on the scoresheet, and did just that three minutes after the opener. The Greek forward, Bayer's top scorer this season, ran at Getafe's back line with pace and power, and after beating two defenders he powered past Ustari to double the away team's lead. Chris Dabrowski smashed the woodwork for Leverkusen on 16 minutes, before Getafe worked a chance of their own. Jaime Gavilan broke through Bayer's usually solid back three, but scuffed his effort way wide of the target. Bernd Schneider, who announced his planned retirement earlier on this season, was given the captain's armband tonight, and fittingly he was the man to make it three. Schneider met Cardozo's cross with a bullet header which left Ustari rooted to the spot. It was the midfielder's first goal of the season, and could well be the last goal of his career if he fails to score in Sunday's final. The travelling fans were enjoying their sides performance and were dreaming of a league and cup double, which could have been a treble had it not been for a defeat in the German Shield final - a match they dominated against Borussia Dortmund. Back to tonight's action, and a good night for Bayer was turned into a great night on 40 minutes. Chris Dabrowski drifted out to the left hand side, cut back inside and curled a beauty past the already-downbeat keeper to make it 4-0. Just one minute later, and Kiessling made it five! A poor ball from Getafe's restart allowed the German in for his second of the game. Roberto Soldado offered some consolation to the home side on 43 minutes with a great header which left Rene Adler stranded. A goalless second half ensured Bayer Leverkusen's path to the final, and no doubt their fans will travel in their thousands to watch their heroes in action. Stefan Kiessling celebrates the fifth for the away side in Spain.
Gary Townsend 1,283
Re: Gold Championship 48 - Match Report / Transfers Thread Liverpool are Champions!!! Needing only a point at home to Fulham on the last day the nerves were there to see and it was no surprise to see Fulham take the lead with an Andy Johnson strike on 15 minutes, however Liverpool were back on level terms within a minute with another goal from Armando Petit, his 8th league goal in 16 starts. Francesco Totti added a second after 24 minutes to the relief of the crowd, this was then end of the scoring until the 85th minute, when again Francesco Totti popped up for a tap in after the ball came back of the bar to score to cruicial 3rd, the crowd went wild, realising that the title was now only minutes away, then in the 88th minute Alejandro Dominguez was given a gift from keeper Mark Schwarzer whose miss hit clearance went straight to him for him to calmly stroke the ball into the back of the net. Manager Gary Townsend was extremely pleased with his first league title with Liverpool and also with the performances of the lads over a difficult season, particularly Totti and Dominguez, who have scored 25 league goals between them this season, which has been much needed as Sulejmani and Torres have spent much of the campaign on the treatment table, with Torres only managing 3 goals in 14 starts.
