Manchester coast to victory in opening game of the season!

Venue: Old Trafford

Attendance:75,553

Manchester United turned on the style to defeat visitors AC Milan 3-1 in what was billed as "The clash of the heavyweights" in their season opener. The only dampener for the Caleb's side being new signing David Villa receiving his marching orders just 4 minutes into the game. The Spanish international will now miss the next three games against Roma, Real Madrid and Lyon.

Manchester United started the match brightly, with veteran midfielder Paul Scholes opening the scoring after just 50 seconds. Milan's Ceni could only parry a long-range effort from Luis Anderson and Paul Scholes needed no second invitation, lashing the ball home to send the Old Trafford faithful to their feet.

With the match picking up in pace and tenactiy, Manchester United left winger Ryan Giggs earned himself a caution in the 3rd minute after a theatrical tumble in the Milan's pentalty box. Teammate David Villa was shown a straight red 1 minute later after a slap on Nesta.

David_Villa_goes_of_518261a.jpg

A sorry debut for Villa lasted only 4 minutes.

An off-color AC Milan failed to make their numerical advantage count as they fell behind to a second goal after another blooper by new signing Ceni. The Brazilian custodian could only fumble a teasing chip by Ryan Giggs over the line. Manchester United were 2-0 up with only 9 minutes played. Giggs goal seemed to have sparked the Italian side to their senses as they began to lay siege to the home side's goal. Manchester United would have been glad to hear the half-time whistle sound for had it not been veteran goalkeeper Van Der Sar's string of saves, they would not have gone into the break 2-0 up.

Van Der Sar in fine form.

AC Milan emerged after the break galvanized by gaffer's Rafa Benitez's words no doubt as they played with urgency, with Kaka spraying passes around the field as they attempted to get back into the game. Luck was however not with them as another defensive lapse allowed Manchester United to kill off the game. Three minutes after the kick-off, Spanish winger David Silva was allowed space and time on the right flank and his teasing cross was met by the head of Rio Ferdinand, who rose highest to glance home a header to put the match result beyond Milan. Manchester United manager Caleb could be seen exchanging high fives with the subs bench.

_42227010_rio_goal_gett416.jpg

Yeah baby! Its a goal! Ferdinand leads the celebrations.

Rio Ferdinand's goal proved to be the sucker blow as AC Milan were completely deflated by now. Both sides have further chances to add to the scoreline but the poor finishing from first, Giggs and Kaka ensured the scoreline remained at 3-0 in favor of the hosts. THe hosts were beginning to display signs of complacency as they begin to take their foot off the pedal. AC Milan seized the chance after poor marking at the back allowed an unmarked Seedorf to plant a header past compatriot Van Der Sar to grab a consolation in the 72nd minute.

Seeing the game won and truly over, Caleb took off the impressive Carrick and sent on Portuguese starlet Miguel Veloso for his debut in the 75th minute. Brazilian prodigy had two more chances to claw the Italian side back into the game but it was not to be his day as he ballooned his shot horrendously over the bar and slipped as the arched himself to strike the second. Zambrotta had to be alert as he tackled the ball away from Rooney cleanly just as the England forward was heading for goal. Wild scenes of celebrations erupted on the terraces when the final whistle was blew as Manchester United celebrated a relatively easy victory over fellow title hopefuls AC Milan.

Manchester United crash to away defeat

A frustrated Rooney on a night when things didn't go as expected.

High-flying Manchester United were brought back down to Earth when their title hopes were hit by a defeat to an impressive Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. A full-house of 82,922 were there to witness the match in which the sultry weather did both teams no good. An early goal from Montenegro striker Vucinic and another from Italian midfield maestro Aquilani 15 minutes from time was enough to secure all three points for Roma. Roma, under coach Amel Murgijaš are now unbeaten since the season started while Caleb's Manchester United record stands at one win, one lost in two games. Roma were the superior side throughout with a larger share of possession and having more shots on goal.

New signing Higuain had a glorious chance to gift the visitors the lead when he beat the offside trap and raced through on goal only to skew his shot horribly wide in the 4th minute. Just as Manchester United were still settling into the game, Roma took the lead in clinical fashion. Receiving the ball, hitman Vucinic dribbled past two opponents before his rasping shot bulged the net to open the scoring in the 7th minute.

610x.jpg

Vucinic acknowledges the fans.

England wonderkid Rooney spurned a chance to draw his side level after he shot tamely at Roma's Doni. Spanish midfielder, Marcos Senna tried his luck with a free-kick 25 yards out but his effort could only skim the bar. Roma had a chance to double their lead but Vucinic was wasteful after a neat pull-back from Taddei. Manchester United veteran midfielder Paul Scholes was lucky to escape with a yellow after swatting Juan with his hand. Higuain then incensed several Roma players after he fell to the ground too easily from a Mexes challenge. In the 30th minute, Roma new signing Gael Clichy showed immense speed and skill as he sped down the left from a Roma counter-attack but he lacked the final touch. David Silva shot lacked venom as Manchester United ended the first half a goal down.

Manchester United emerged after the break fired up, as they played with greater urgency than the first half. However for all the hard running of Rooney and Higuain, Roma were solid at the back with Juan marshaling the defence well.

GD6865130@Football---Manchester-7338.jpg

Juan enjoyed a fine night with his crucial interceptions.

Roma were dangerous on their counters with the pace of Clichy and Taddei on both flanks particularly a thorn in the Manchester United defence. Evra was often outnumbered with Panucci and Cicinho bombing down the right flank at every chance and Giggs offering little help. There was a sense of inevitability about a second Roma goal and it duly arrived in the 75th minute. An inswinging cross from Cicinho was chested down by Aquilani, who they volleyed the ball home, leaving Van Der Sar with no chance. Clichy was then booked for holding back Anderson and it was the French defender's final contribution as he was later taken off after complaining of a dead leg. Manchester United were relieved to hear the final whistle in what was a bad night for them. Roma currently soared to 5th in the table while Manchester United plunged to 13th.

Rio Ferdinand confirmed as new Captain of Manchester United for this season.

49_1204432433.gif

Following the departure of experienced right-back Gary Neville to VFL Bochum for a deal in excess of 2 million, Manchester United manager Caleb has named Rio Ferdinand as his new captain. Dutch veteran keeper Van Der Sar has been revealed as the vice-captain.

Said Caleb to the club's website, manutd.com.

"Ferdinand is a lad with great leadership capabilities. I've no doubt he'll be the right man to lead the team. I'll also like to thank Gary Neville for his services to use over the past and he's been a real leader and model example for the younger lads in our side."

The Soccermanager Times also managed to catch up with Ferdinand and get what the England international had to say on this.

"Oh I'm surprised and pleased. I was expecting someone more experienced like Giggs to inherit the armband. But now that I'm entrusted with this responsibility, it'll be a great honor to lead my team out to matches. I'll definitely give my all for the squad."

Caleb: Ronaldo's party lifestyle a no-go for me

paris_hilton1_300_400.jpgcristiano-ronaldo-entertainer.jpg

Paris Hilton (left) charm was too hot for the suave Ronaldo to handle.

Speaking to the media for the first time since the sensational sale of Portugese winger Ronaldo to Valencia, Manchester United manager Caleb revealed that the party-loving side of Ronaldo was the reason why he sold him.

"It is insulting to the squad and me after Ronaldo was out clubbing when the squad was supposed to have a pre-season get together in Manchester, a day before our season opener against Ac Milan. No player is bigger than Manchester United and since Valencia offered David Villa and David Silva, after consulting the board, they decided it was a fair deal and thus decided to cash in on him."

The final straw regarding the Ronaldo saga was thought to be when the media photographed him leaving a club with Paris Hilton, also notoriously known as a party-animal herself. To make matters worse, the paparazzi found out later that the club was having a final get together before the new season started when Ronaldo was "missing" from the session. The media soon pieced two and two together and pictures of Ronaldo and Paris were soon plastered all over the Manchester paper.

The Portugese winger did arrive at the club's training ground, albeit two hours later, resulting in a fiery bust-up between coach Caleb and him, according to teammates.

Said club captain, Ferdinand. "They had a nasty argument. I got to admit. The coach even said he could see lipstick smears on his lips!"

Ronaldo was unreachable for comment yesterday when the press contacted his agent.

Manchester German starlet to join Hamburg SV on loan.

Marko Marin will return to his homeland in a loan deal.

Manchester United have confirmed that promising winger Marko Marin, snapped up from German minnows Borussia Monchengladbach for 8.1 million pounds this season will move back to Germany on a season long loan, joining Division 2 outfit Hamburg. Manager Caleb was said to be a keen admirer of the 19-year-old and thus decided to draw the club's checkbook to snap up the German international. With competition for places tough, Caleb revealed that a loan move would be the best for all parties.

"Marin is a lad whom I've got high hopes for. Competition for places are tough currently with Giggs and Kranjcar ahead of Marin in the pecking order. A loan move back to Germany will be good for the lad as he seeks playing time there. He need not worry, as one thing for sure, the lad's future is with Manchester United." Caleb told the club's official website.

Marin was said to be delighted with the deal when the media caught up with him outside Manchester United's training ground just minutes ago.

"I'm glad the gaffer has allowed me to move on in a loan deal to get playing time. I hope to return to Manchester United a better player. This is a really big club and I'm proud to be part of it."

Preview: Real Madrid vs Manchester United

Santiago Bernabéu will serve as the backdrop to the clash of two powerhouses.

Spanish giants Real Madrid host Manchester United in another mouth-watering tie which have left the pundits drooling. With both sides level on points in the league standings after a win and a loss in two games, today's result could very much determine the standings of both teams. A defeat for either team would severely hamper their title hopes.

Real Madrid could be set to unveil new signing Lionel Messi against at the Santiago Bernabeu tonight. Should that happens, ex-Manchester United Tevez would have to contend with a place on the bench to accommodate manager Chris Dennett preferred lone striker formation.

Messi (left) arrival means Tevez would have to wait for another chance to play against his former club.

Caleb refused to reveal his line-up for today but Argentine hotshot Higuain is expected to retain his starting place with first-choice forward David Villa still missing through suspension. Much will be expected of Higuain after an average debut against Roma. Fellow strike partner Rooney is also feeling the heat after firing blanks against AC Milan and Roma.

Real Madrid has the luxury of a fully fit squad to chose from but Caleb has to contend with the exclusion of David Villa as the Spanish goal-machine serves his second of a three match ban.

Rooney will be hoping to prove himself tonight after two lacklustre performances this season.

Giants share the spoils in pulsating match at Santiago Bernabeu.

A late Rio Ferdinand header rescued a point for visitors Manchester United after Dutch midfield schemer Sneijder had earlier gave Spanish club Real Madrid the lead in the 8th minute.

Much of the spotlight were on the strikers of Manchester United, with Higuain and Rooney unabale to find the net once this season. Interesting, Rio Ferdinand leads the scoring charts now with two goals with all of Manchester's goals having come from the midfielders and defenders.

Manchester United sought to banish memories of their painful loss to Roma as they showed the greater ambition upon kickoff but could only muster a tame shot on goal through Higuain while Real Madrid Casillas was alert to fist a Rooney's effort away. Manchester United were left to rue their generosity in front of goal when Real Madrid took the lead with their first shot, Sneijder putting the ball in the top corner from eight yards. Robben's free-kick was nodded on by Tevez before the ball fell to Sneijder, who smacked the ball into the top corner for his first goal of the campaign.

610x.jpg

Sneijder with his first goal of the season.

Marcos Senna had a chance to level the score but he could only fire horribly wide with only the goalkeeper to beat. Wayne Rooney could only roar at the sky in disbelief after he fired straight at Casillas. Lionel Messi and Sneijder had chances at the other end but poor finishing let them down.

Messi2750310.jpg

Messi consoled by his teammate after a good chance gone begging.

Manchester United continued to have the better of chances but Higuain dallied on the ball to allow Pepe to flatten him with a crucial intervention and Vidic arrived late on a corner but couldn't get his head to it. The travelling fans suffered a real scare after a Messi lob sent Van Der Sar backpedaling to push if over the bar.

The visitors looked far more incisive after the break, and Higuain was inches away from converting Giggs's low cross to the back post. David Silva then tested Casilass with a venomous shot before Ryan Giggs effort shaved the bar. Manchester United were handed a lifeline in the 62nd minute with a controversial penalty decision. Higuain went down after an aerial duel with Fabio Cannavaro and the referee wasted little time in pointing the the spot. To make matters worse for Real Madrid, Cannavaro earned himself a yellow.

340x.jpg

Cannavaro applauds the referee sarcastically after being booked.

Up stepped Rooney as he sent Casillas the wrong way only to see his shot dribble inches wide of goal as whistles and howls erupted around the Bernabeu. Lionel Messi was sent through on goal after a delightful pass from Sneijder but Van Der Sar was quick off his line to clear the ball. Robben sparked a melee after he spit in Vidic face, earning himself an early shower.

AngryFerdinand.jpgArjenRobben_692416.jpg

Ferdinand (left) reacting angrily after Robben spat in his face. The latter was sent off for the offense.

Making full use of their numerical advantage, Manchester Untied kept up with their high tempo pressing game and the finally grabbed an equalizer off captain's Ferdinand head. The English defender rose highest to nod home a Giggs corner in the 77th minute to send relief to the anxious away fans.

Rio_Ferdinand_682x4_405014a.jpg

Ferdinand soaring high after his equalizer for the Red Devils.

Gago was then booked after a dive before Argentine wizard Messi fluffed his shot. Heinze had a chance to emerge a hero in the 83rd minute after beating Vidic and bore down on goal but he left his scoring boots at home after his shot went out for a throw in from a tight angle. Patrice Evra had the last chance to win the game for Manchester United but his swerving free kick cannoned off the bar as it was once again poor finishing which let Manchester United down.

Manchester United are now winless on their travels and with a home time against Lyon coming up in the league, a chance for redemption looms. Manchester United currently sit in 9th position while Real Madrid are positioned 12th after 3 games.

Manchester United loans out Asenjo, unveils Brek Shea and Keirrison.

Germany. Here I Come! Asenjo moves to Hamburg on loan.

Manchester United have confirmed that 19-year-old Spanish sensation Asenjo would join Division 2 side Hamburg in a loan move. The highly-rated goalkeeper was said to be finding it hard to dislodge veteran Van Der Sar from between the sticks so he opted for a loan move after consulting manager Caleb.

Said Asenjo to ESPN soccernet.com.

"I'm pleased that the manager understands my concerns. He assured me that my eventual aim of becoming a first-choice goalkeeper would come true with Van Der Sar set to retire soon. I aim to up my game at Hamburg and come back a better player to stake my claim for the No. 1 Jersey."

Meanwhile, two new 19-year-olds were unveiled to the media at Old Trafford yesterday. Defensive midfielder Brek Shea was handed the No. 34 shirt at Manchester United while striking prodigy was handing the No. 32 shirt, filling the void left by Tevez.

Said Caleb of the duo, " Shea is someone whom I feel is in the mould of Roy Keane. The lad is tenacious and has bags of energy. For the first season or two, Shea will praobably be either sent on loan or involved in the reserves. Keirrison would probably be involved in our cup campaigns. At only 19, the lad does have a bright future."

In a sensational move, Manchester United golden boy Rooney is set for a move to the Nou Camp after Barcelona and United came to an agreement on the fee. The deal which will see Rooney swap rainy England for sunny Spain is thought to involve a part exchange with Eto'o and ex-Manchester boy Pique returning to Old Trafford.

Caleb is said to be pleased with the deal, while thanking Rooney for his services.

"I'm glad to be able to get Eto'o and Pique in return. Eto'o is a proven goalscorer and Pique is someone who has immense potential. I'll like to wish Rooney all the best and thank him for all he has given us. The fans will have a place in their hearts for him, no doubt." He told manutd.com

The deal is expected to be completed within the next 20 hours, subject to medicals and the official paperwork. More reports to follow later.

English club Manchester United has unveiled Cameroonian pacy striker Samuel Eto'o as their new No.10 following the sale of Rooney to Barcelona. In a exchange deal, Spanish defender Pique and Eto'o left the Nou Camp while England sensation Wayne Rooney traded England for Spain.

Samuel Eto'o was all smiles as the press caught up with him at the club's training ground early this morning.

"I'm glad to be at Manchester United. They are one of the biggest sides in the world. To be honest, it was very insulting to me when Barcelona tried to use me as a makeweight in the Rooney deal. I felt then that they did not value me so i agreed to come to Manchester United. The gaffer has really been good, assuring me of my role and importance to the team. " He told the BBC Sports.

Manchester United boss Caleb has hinted at a possible debut against French Champions Lyon on Wednesday.

"We'll see how it goes. If Samuel passes through his first training session unscathed, he may well be in line for a debut against Lyon, seeing as David Villa is still suspended, leaving us with a dearth of options up front. " manutd.com was told.

Wright Philips: I'm flattered with United link

Looking forward: Wright-Phillips

Man City pacy winger Wright Phillips has made no attempt to hide his feelings after rumors emerged that derby rivals Manchester United were keen on signing him. The red half of Manchester have tabled an undisclosed bid for me and the media are reporting that a swap deal may be the most likely scenario, with Canadian-born England international Owen Hargreaves moving in the opposite direction. Manchester United have received a shot up the arm earlier this week after owner Malcolm Glazer had stated that the cheque book remain open for manager Caleb to sign players.

Said Wright-Phillips to goal.com, “ I’m flattered to be linked with Man United. They are a big team, and with world-class stars in their ranks, any player would love to play for them. Their manager is also one who emphasizes on youth and fast attacking football, a style of which I am well acquainted with. Many good young lads are also at Manchester United, another attractive factor.”

Phillips comments is one which will not go down too well with the Man City hierarchy and his days at the Eastlands appear to be numbered. The 27-year-old has so far amassed more than 20 caps for the Three Lions.

Manchester United misses out on Wright Phillips, snag Danny in shock move.

Former Zenit midfielder Danny will be hoping for more scenes like such in his England venture.

Manchester United has admitted missing out on English winger after his club Manchester City refused their city rivals the chance to speak to Wright-Phillips.

Said Caleb to the media afterward, " It's a big disappointment, obviously. We have a lack of options on the right flank and Phillips is a lad with all the attributes we need. No one's ruling out anything and perhaps we will get him next month, who knows?" He said cheekily.

However, loyal fans of the English club were given some reason to cheer after Caleb secured the signing of Portugese international Miguel Danny from Zenit with Hargreaves moving the other way. A 5 million fee would be further paid to Zenit after Danny scores his first goal for Manchester United. Danny has recently cemented a spot in both Russian club Zenit and the Portugal national team, drawing interest from Europe's elite sides. It was ultimately Manchester United who won the race for him, following their swiftness in splashing the cash, to ensure the 25-year-old will be donning the red of Manchester United.
