Goias crowned Brazilian champions

2 Horse race for league title

With 2 teams setting the pace in the Brazilian top division this season, meant an explosive finish between Goias and Internacional. Both teams had dominated the top 2 spots of the league since mid season and pulled away from the likes of Cruzeiro and Sao Paulo.

Internacional were favourites and on the 23rd of January, after an 18 game winning streak in all competitions came face to face with Goias. After a heated game it ended 0-0 and gave Goias hope that an improvement in form in their last 3 games and they could still have a chance of finishing one place higher than last season and top of the league.

As hoped Internacional finally slipped up and lost their second to last game against Santos 3-0 and could only manage a 3-3 draw with Sao Paulo on the last day of the season. With this Goias hunger for the title grew and grew and with the addition of a couple of new players bringing in fresh legs, Goias managed 3 wins out of 3, with new boy 19 year old Marcelo Lulinha scoring 4 goals in the last 3 games and helping Goias end Brazilian champions!

Brazilian Champions Goias claim Brazilian Cup

Goias continued their good league form into the cup and reached the final through beating Figueirense 5-1, Vitoria 4-0 and Santos 1-0 in penalties after a tough 1-1 draw at the end of extra time. The cup final was to be played on the 16th of February and would see the seasons top 2 teams go at it again, Goias v Internacional.

With Goias winning the race to become league champions over Internacional meant Internacional were out for revenge and were going to do everything in their power to stop Goias taking another trophey away from them. However Goias started the game still on a high and on the 22nd minute mark took the lead through a Giancarlo Maldonado goal. Internacional were in panic mode and 7 minutes later Thiago Silva took advantage and smashed in Goias 2nd before adding their 3rd after another 2 minutes. Half time couldnt come soon enough for Internacional, but they regrouped and came out fighting in the 2nd half, earning a goal back in the 54th minute through Peter Odemwingie. Internacional fought hard but couldnt stop Dayro Moreno scoring a 4th for Goias 67 minutes in. Internacional refused to give up and Odemwingie got another goal back but 10 minutes before time Goias centre back Thiago Silva picked up his hatrick and ensured Goias as Brazilian cup winners.

Re: Gold Championship 53/Match Reports/Transfers.

Rushden & Diamonds F.C

After nearly 2 years without a manager, Rushden & Diamonds have announced the shock signing of young manager Ricky Rodriguez.

The club who sits at the very bottom of division 5 beat other clubs such as Sunderland and Leeds to sign Rodriguez who has stepped in and already made an immediate impact in his plans to turn the club around quickly.

Rodriguez has stated that with just 12 games left, winning the league is impossible but he is determined to take the team from dead last into the top 4 before the end of the season.

Rodriguez has already struck in the transfer market, after making a verbal deal with 32 year old keeper Stefano Sorrentino. Also brought into the club was young winger Christian Eriksen on loan from Bordeaux.

Rodriguez stated that "Christian will hold the key to whether we can climb the table before the end of the season. The kid demands respect both on and off the pitch and I think the fans will be just as excited as I will be to see him start against Northampton on Saturday."

The next 12 games for The Diamonds will show whether the team has the ability to compete against the best in the league and if they can make the move into a higher league.

Things heating up in the top 4

With only 5 games left in the season and only 1 point seperating the top 3 teams in the English top flight things really heated up yesterday when Arsenal travelled to Old Trafford to take on fierce rivals Manchester United.

The game turned out to be one of the games of the season with both teams and managers giving it their all to continue the dream of that number 1 spot in the league.

Result:

Manchester United 6 - 8 Arsenal

Both teams started the game at full speed and it took just 2 minutes for Manchester United to go 1-0 up through a CABAYE free kick. Arsenal responded instantly and on the stroke of 4 minutes made it 1-1 through a CESC FABREGAS free kick. The game stayed equal until Arsenal's Brazilian defender DEDE gave away a penalty after a badly timed challenge 27 minutes in which Aleksandr KERZHAKOV smashed into the top corner for United giving them the advantage again. 4 minutes later and a panicing Arsenal defence gave away another free kick in a dangerous postion which CABAYE put into the back on the net again putting united 3-1 up. Arsenal clawed one back through SOW before half time, making the half time score 3-2 to UNited.

The second half began in Arsenals hands and 5 minutes in SOW vollied in his 2nd of the game making it 3-3. 3 minutes later and United responded through a FORLÁN strike. Arsenal were quick on the counter attack and THEO WALCOTT curled one in to make it 4-4. It was quiet for 7 whole minutes before Arsenal scored another 3 goals in 3 minutes through VAN PERSIE, SOW and BARRY putting Arsenal 7-4 up and surely out of sight....but no ROONEY got 1 back for United just 2 minutes later and another 5 minutes later TOURE put United back in the game and made the score 7-6 to Arsenal. With both teams dead on their feet PAPISS CISSE managed Arsenals 8th goal before Brazilian defender DEDE was sent off for Arsenal. Final Score 8-6 to the Gunners!

Report

Arsenal had a poor start to the season which saw them lose 4-1 on penalties to Everton in the English Charity Shield Final at Wembley at a 1-1 draw after extra time.

However Arsenal had an immediate opportunity for revenge over their English rivals as they met again days later, this time in Monaco at Louis II for the SMFA Super Cup Final. Again the game was too even to call and after a goaless 0-0 draw the game went to penalties again, but this time Arsenal took the advantage and won 4-3.

Arsenal continued to dominate abroad after climbing out of their SMFA Champions Cup group of River Plate, Chievo Verona and Hannover 96. They then went on to knock out Brazilian side Atlético Paranaense, Real Madrid and Juventus before meeting Scottish powerhouse Rangers in the final in Italy at the Stadio San Paolo. Goals from Isco, Nasri (2) and Van Persie (2) gave Arsenal a 5-1 commanding win.

As holders Arsenal went into the English Cup strong, beating Torquay United, Norwich City, Everton, Aston Villa and Manchester United before meeting London rivals Fulham in the Final. 3 goals from Van Persie and a penalty from Tevez gave Arsenal a 4-2 victory and enabled them to hold onot the English Cup for the 3rd season in a row.

After coming runners up in last seasons English Shield Arsenal wanted to go one further this season and reached the final by beating Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Shorpe United, Swansea City and Derby County. In the final Arsenal came up against Newcastle United but 2 goals from Van Persie gave Arsenal a 2-0 victory.

Arsenal couldnt manage to catch English Division 1 winners Newcastle United who finished 11 points above the gunners.

Arsenal Player of the season:

Ivory Coast forward Seydou Doumbia finally got his chance to show what he can do when given playing time for the gunners, with Tevez and Van Persie busy in other competitions meant Doumbia could step up in the league which he did and managed to finish as the leagues top scorer with 20 goals in 24 games, also providing 8 assists and 4 man of the match performances.

Transfers

Arsenal managed 2 exciting signings at the end of the season with 22 year old Spanish attacking midfielder Isco joining from FC Porto for 20 million and proven striker Sergio Aguero moving across London from Chelsea in a deal which saw Cesc Fabregas move the other way. 2 other big departures were Song and Sagna.
