Caleb's Sunderland got kept up their Division 2 title hopes after turning on a 5-star display against troubled Sheffield United. The home side were no match for the visitors, bossing both possession and shots. Sunderland had 74 percent of the possession and 59 shots to Sheffield's 19. New Sunderland gaffer Caleb handed debuts to seven players, with four of them getting on the score-sheet.

Sheffield United were without a manager prior to kick-off after a collapsed proposed takeover left the club mired in troubles and the previous manager duly resigned.

Against a wall of noise, Sunderland took little time to settle down, with Serbian midfield sensation nutmegging his man marker before clipping the ball over Mario Galinovic in the 1st minute amid thunderous cheers from the home fans.

This one's for you fans. Kuzmanovic makes it 1-0.

Perhaps still dizzy with euphoria, Kuzmanovic was guilty of missing a glaring opportunity just 3 minutes later. Speeding away from a static Sheffield United defence, he saw his fierce shot saved by Galinovic after he fired straight at the latter. New signing Wendel then displayed a slick piece of individual skill, his step-overs leaving poor Sheffield right-back Kozluk red-faced before he curled home a wicked ball from the right-edge of the penalty box. 2-0 after 6 minutes, it's clearly not a night for the Sheffield United fans.

2-0. New signing Wendel makes an instant impact with the fans.

Conceding two early goals was clearly not what Sheffield United had planned as they instantly regrouped with Rob Hulse shot grazing the Sunderland crossbar before Israel winger Benayoun displaeyd a blend of good pace and skill to shrug off the attention of Mathijsen but could only send his shot into the side-netting. In a typical end-to-end action, Sheffield Croatian goalkeeper was soon called upon to save from Argentine forward German Denis before Spanish wonderkid Bojan skewed his shot wide. Sheffield winger Kazim-Kazim had the honor of being the first to go into the referee's book after he scythed down Lorik Cana in desperation after the latter robbed him of the ball.

With the minutes ticking away and half-time approaching, German defender Westermann was clearly keen not to miss out on getting some limelight. The new signing muscled ahead of his marker in the 39th minute to send a looping header past a flapping Galinovic to make it 3-0 with 6 minutes left in the first half.

No one can stop him. German Westermann scores on his debut.

With the first half drawing to a close, Belgian midfield hachetman Kompany cut in from the left before unleashing a screamer which bulged the top left corner of the net to make it 4-0 in the 44th minute.

Oh what a night. Kompany makes it 4-0.

The second half kicked off in similar fashion, with Sunderland showing more urgency as they probed their way around, even camping in the Sheffield United half for long spells of the game. Sheffield United got their breakthrough in the 50th minute after Kazim-Kazim showed off his searing pace as he sprinted the entire length of the pitch after a clearance off a Sunderland corner fell to him. Racing clear of the entire Sunderland defence, he squared the ball unselfishly for the tailing Rob Hulse to slip the ball under the advancing Frey to grab a consolation for the visitors.

Too little too late? Rob Hulse grabs a goal for Sheffield.

The floodgates opened as an energetic Sunderland took advantage of a fast-tiring Sheffield by playing a high-tempo pressing game. Argentina forward German Denis then scored with a delightful lob in the 53rd minute to put the game beyond Sheffield. Spanish sensation Bojan Kirkic then grabbed a hat-trick in the space of 8 minutes to make it 8-1.

A debut goal from Denis makes it 5-1.

Bojan was unstoppable with his 8 minute blitz.

Sunderland showed no sign of easing up on a poor Sheffield United fans. Sunderland fans could be heard singing "We are going to the premiership" as Westermann bagged a brace for Sunderland to make it 9-1. 3 minutes later, a poor clearance fell to Dutch defender Moris Mathijsen outside the panalty area and he volleyed it past Galinovic to ensure Sunderland took their goal tally to double figures.

10-1. Mathijsen scores a screamer.

Further goals from German Denis and Bojan Krkic ensured Sunderland grabbed their biggest league win of the season to give Caleb the perfect start to his managerial career at the Stadium Of Light.
