Cheltenham Win In 5 Goal Thriller At Oakwell

Cheltenham Town have achieved their first win of the season after beating Barnsley 3-2 in an entertaining game at Oakwell. The Robins had the lions share of the possession thanks to some neat passing football but Barnsley will feel unlucky to have come away from the game with a defeat as they had more chances. Cheltenham were far more clinical in front of goal with 8 of their 9 nine shots hitting the target.

Cheltenham started the game brightest when right winger Willians Santana was set through on goal in the 3rd minute but poor control let the chance slip away. The deadlock was broken in the 16th minute with a wonder goal from man of the match Alan Dzagoev. The talented Russian teenager struck a curling shot from outside the area with his right foot which just crept inside the far post giving Barnsley goalkeeper Heinz Muller no chance.

The advantage was only to last 3 minutes though as Barnsley's França Anderson Silva beat the Cheltenham Town offside trap leaving the defence standing. With just the keeper to beat Anderson Silva showed great composure slotting the ball home from 10 yards. Barnsley continued to push for a second goal but Cheltenham goalkeeper Dos Santos Renan was having none of it. Then in the 36th minute completely against the run of play the Robins regained the lead with a fantastic solo effort from Robert Lewandowski.

Half-Time: Barnsley 1 Cheltenham Town 2

The Cheltenham Town defence looked extremely nervous at the start of the second half almost gifting Jamal Campbell-Ryce with a goal after dithering with the loose ball. Luckily for them Campbell-Ryce could only blast his shot wide. Then in the 50th minute the game was tied at 2-2 after a stunning strike from Barnsley center back Steve Foster which even the Cheltenham fans applauded.

The game was on a knife-edge and could have gone either way with both teams creating chances on goal. In the 82nd minute Cheltenham were given a corner which Barnsley could only clear to the edge of the box for Mounir El Hamdaoui to smash into the Barnsley net on the half volley to make it 3-2 to the Robins.

Cheltenham Town Exodus Begins

Cheltenham Town have announced that they will be reducing the size of their squad down to 22 players over the next couple of months as their wage bill is currently putting a huge strain on the clubs finances. This means a further 56 players are set to leave the Robins in the near future. The Cheltenham manager also plans on improving the quality of the first team squad in the process.

Ricardo Daniel Noir had already left the club for FC Vaduz for £4.1M last week. Two more players also left Whaddon Road this morning. Elías Hernandez joined Helsingborgs IF for £1.9M and Alfredo Sanchez completed his £531K move to Greek side Kallithea.

Plymouth Argyle Want Eltringham

After the shock resignation of Steven Bunker the Plymouth Argyle board decided Cheltenham Town manager Ian Eltringham was the right man to help them get into Division One this season. With Plymouth expected to challenge for promotion again after making the play-offs last season and a squad which boasts some real talent such as Carlos Vela and Bakari Kone the Plymouth board felt this could be enough to tempt Eltringham from Whaddon Road.

Unfortunately for Plymouth Eltringham rejected the offer and pledged his loyalty to the the Robins. He stated that he is in the middle of a long term project to get Cheltenham Town to the top flight over the next few seasons and he went on to say that he has a great relationship with his chairman, the board and the fans so won't be going anywhere for a very long time. The Cheltenham Town chairman and fans are delighted with Eltringham's decision to stay.

Cheltenham Town Transfer News

The Cheltenham Town fans are buzzing with excitement after the club announced the arrival of 10 new players to their already talented young squad. 20 players also left the club after being used to broker the deals. The Cheltenham Town manager has also stated that he is interested in signing four more players and hopes his chairman can get the deals completed over the next 2-3 days. With the quality of the players who are now joining the Robins it's easy to understand why their manager turned down the advances of Plymouth Argyle.

Walsall v Cheltenham Town

Match Preview

Eight players are set to make their Cheltenham Town debuts against Walsall today. The players to make their debuts are Pedro Rui Patricio, Andreas Beck, Sebastian Boenisch, Dirk Marcellis, Edgar Solis, Marko Marin, Patrick Helmes and Guillaume Hoarau. All are fresh and ready to play even though they only arrived at the club less than 24 hours ago. It will be interesting to see how well this new look Cheltenham Town team perform considering how many new players are making their debuts for the club.

Walsall go into the game on the back of a 3-0 defeat by Southend United on Wednesday. The game overall was fairly even but school boy errors at the back cost Walsall the match. They will need to be much more disciplined in defence against Cheltenham or they could be on the receiving end of another heavy defeat. Walsall will be without right back Anthony Gerrard because of suspension.

Cheltenham Town Transfer News

Cheltenham Town secured the services of three more high profile players this evening. Guillaume Hoarau joins from Paris Saint-Germain, Vedad Ibisevic joins from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and Claudio Marchisio joins from Italian giants Juventus. All three players secured their moves to the Robins just an hour before Cheltenham's game with Walsall.

Manager Ian Eltringham had already settled on his team selection for the game but with the deals now finalised he decided to bring Hoarau into the squad in place of Nimani. Marchisio was given a place on the bench.

More players also left Cheltenham Town today. Rinaldo Kassio was signed by Dordrecht for £1M. Leandro Caruso, Bittencourt Danny Morais, Luís Chico, Júnior Serginho Mineiro and José da Costa Jumar also left the club as they were used to broker the deals for Vedad Ibisevic, Guillaume Hoarau and Claudio Marchisio.

Cheltenham are still in the hunt for a right midfielder to provide competition for Edgar Solis. They should have a deal signed and sealed sometime on Sunday. Many more players are still to leave the club in the near future.

Walsall 0 Cheltenham Town 2

Cheltenham Town's new attacking partnership of Helmes and Hoarau combined well together to break down a stubborn Walsall defence. The Robins dominated much of the game with their short passing moves but Walsall looked a lot more organised compared to their previous game against Southend United where they were easily beaten 3-0.

The Cheltenham Town manager had to wait until the 61st minute to see his team take the advantage. Guillaume Hoarau set his strike partner up with a pass from the right. Patrick Helmes then skipped past his marker to blast the ball into the back of the net from 25 yards. The Robins made it 2-0 on the 82nd minute when Guillaume Hoarau played a wonderful through ball which beat the Walsall offside trap. Patrick Helmes latched onto pass and slide the ball under the advancing keeper to get his second of the game.

Tobias Weis Joins Cheltenham Town

Talented German midfielder Tobias Weis completed his move to Cheltenham Town from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim earlier today. Cheltenham paid £200K plus Nery Veloso and Vedran Jugovic to secure the services of Weis. He will provide competition for Edgar Solis on the right wing. Weis is the third player to leave Hoffenheim for Cheltenham this week joining former Hoffenheimers Andreas Beck and Vedad Ibisevic at Whaddon Road.

Carlos Santucho, Sabrin Sburlea, Mario Ticinovic and Silva William Matheus also left Cheltenham Town today as the club continue to bring down the size of their squad to a more manageable level.
