Birminghams City's second league match was played tonight in St. Andrew's Stadium with 20,183 Blue'sfans in attendance as well as 5,000 Crystal Palace Fans. The first half started very slow, with the first and only score coming at the 41st minute from youngster Scott Sinclair with an excellent chip. Crystal Palace had 3 first half scoring chances but Maik Taylor made three diving stops, one of them coming back into play with Liam Ridgewell blasting it out to pick up the fallen goalkeeper. Going into the half it was 1-0 Blues.

The second half saw the match taken to the next level as both teams came out firing on all cylinders. Palace's Snowcroft, Derry, and Carle had shots on goal, but Maik Taylor continued his superb form saving all three. For Birmingham, Carsley, Mariga, and O'Conner all hit the crossbar, and failed to score. The match ended at 1-0 Birmingham. Both teams played great defensively with superb performances from each goalkeeper. Coach Weaver had these things to say, "Glad to pick up the three points, Taylor and Sinclair both played excellent."

Birmingham's next match will be tomorrow's friendly against Hull City, then on Saturday they play there third league match against Queens Park Rangers.

Another great Wolves performance

N. HUNT (23)

M. KIGHTLY (36), (51)

Wolves have continued their fine opening season form following Monday's shoot out victory over Derby in the Cup and the opening day win over Sheffield Wednesday with a fine performance at Molineux last night.

The Midlands side got off to the perfect start as Sylvan Ebanks-Blake took advantage of some early nerves in the Reading defence and took a chance well. This was inside the first minute. Reading did come back and were the better team for the first 25 minutes. They got their equalizer within their good spell as Noel Hunt netted.

After conceding, Wolves seemed to jump into gear and really put Reading under pressure, creating numerous chances and keeping the ball well. Before too long they were back in the lead. This time, it took two attemps by Michael Kightly to beat the keeper. A deserved lead going into half time.

The half time break didn't stop Wolves' rhythym at all and they kept attacking, resulting in Kightly getting his second goal and Wolves' third. A thunderbolt from 20 yards which gave the Reading keeper no chance. A fine goal to seal the win for his team.

Winston is expecting great things from his team this season and now that he has boosted ranks with the signing of Dietmar Hamman from Manchester City, he believes the squad is strong enough to challenge for automatic promotion.

Inter Milan get off to the perfect league start

After the first 2 matches Inter find themselves in 2nd place in the league conceding just the 1 goal.

Leite Adriano kissing the Inter badge after the latest goal.

The only hiccup to Stefan's reign is the 1-0 defeat to Boca Juniors which will need to be addressed thoroughly as it seems the players thought this would be an easy match before the game at Arsenal on the 13th.

Players rumoured to leave.

Cambiasso, Maicon, Stankovic + Ibrahimovic were all caught clubbing at the local pizza bar and are all placed on the Transfer List, although Ibrahimovic is proving his worth to the club by contributing goals for the club.

Internacional draw again

Fluminese 0 Internacional 0

Internacional battled to a creditable 0-0 draw away to Fluminese, despite being on the back foot for the majority of the game, Internacional were resolute in defence and earned there 2nd successive draw of the season with a weakened team due to match fitness problems as both Internacionals star men D'Alessandro and Nilmar were only fit enough to play 15-30 mins.

Manager Ray Pauley had this to say:

" I am happy enough with the result against a good Fluminese team, hopefully we can kick on and start converting these draws into wins which I am confident we can do after the new team has had a settling in period"

This leaves Internacional 7th of 10 after 2 games in Brazil following 2draws, Vasco Da Gama set the pace on 4points after a resounding 4-0 victory over Botafogo.

Manchester City update:

47_1190143104.gif

2nd March: SMFA Shield Round 1 - Leg 1: Racing Santander 0-2 Manchester City

Given

Zabaleta - Apam - Onuoha

Nicolita - Fernandes - Hamann - Felipe Melo - Hellebuyck

Mandzukic - Bellamy

With the Shield not being top priority for City this season, 9 of the reserves were given their chance in Santander with only Given and Bellamy keeping their places from Saturday. Dominating possession and restricting the home side to just 1 shot on target the away side were the most comfortable and the opening goal came from a mix up in the defence when Ezequiel Garay's back-pass fell short and gave Gelson Fernandes an easy finish in the 65th minute. Mario Mandzukic doubled the lead soon after when he went round the keeper to finish from an acute angle on his debut for the club. City now take a lead back to Eastlands next Friday where the reserves will play again.

4th March: Manchester City 2-0 Bolton Wanderers

Given

Dunne - Richards - Bridge

Wright-Phillips - Ireland - Kompany - De Jong - Robinho

Mandzukic - Bojinov

City were made to work hard by a determined Bolton side on Wednesday night but overall a 2-0 win was probably a fair result. Using a 4-3-3 wingers system, Bolton seemed to be coping well and forced Shay Given into making 2 brilliant saves early on. However, after half time they began to push more forward and were made to pay when Wayne Bridge thumped a low shot under Jaaskelainen after 50 minutes. Bridge nearly doubled the lead soon after but his effort was ruled out for offside, a very narrow escape for Bolton's defence. Vincent Kompany managed to beat their offside trap in the 74th minute though before sliding it under the advancing Jaaskelainen for another 3 points.

Transfer News:

Al Nassr's striker Saad Al Harthi has become the latest signing for Manchester City as he completed a £5.4 million move a few days ago. With City in 4 competitions Al Harthi is likely to become a valuable squad member and looks set to play in the cups alongside Craig Bellamy.

Meanwhile, both Dietmar Hamann and Elano have left the club recently as City look to build a younger squad. Hamann moved to Wolves for £2.5 million with defender George Friend heading the other way, whilst Elano moved to Fiorentina for £3.6 million + the highly talented Carvalho Felipe Melo.

Leeds Lackluster Again

Shorpe Utd 2 – 2 Leeds Utd

Leeds United managed to pick up their first point of the season with a draw at Shorpe United in Division 3. However, manager Benno Davey was far from satisfied with his team’s performance as it showed in the post match comments. ”We just haven’t began to play yet this season, we are defiantly below par from what I expected and this needs to change and it needs to change right away. We looked better then what we did in Saturday’s humiliating game against Tranmere but we were far from impressive today. Hard work and determination is what is needed and that is what I will be installing as of now with this team. We start preparing tomorrow for the visit of Leicester City this Saturday, there may be a few changes in personnel as well as tactics for this game and if they players step up and play like what I expect them too and what they are capable of, I fully expert all 3 points to be staying at Elland Road” Davey explained.

Athletico Madrid appoint Jake Alexiuk as their new clubs manager

Earlier this hour Athletico Madrid appointed Jake Alexiuk as their new clubs manager after he left Portsmouth with the opportunity to manage Athletico Madrid immediatly as Thomas Ince no longer liked managing in Spain and took over where Jake left off at Portsmouth. Jake Alexiuk wishes Thomas Ince all the best at Portsmouth and hopes he has a successful career with the club that he used to manage. Jake Alexiuk currently has no transfer targets but he is looking around for a suitable buy but he says that he is mostly focusing on tommorows Spanish Sheild clash with Xerez and Jake Alexiuk hopes Athletico Madrid can progress to the next round.

1 point from 9, where does Leeds Utd Go from here?

Leeds United have only picked up 1 point from their opening 3 games and already the fans are getting on the back of new manager Benno Davey. Leeds went down at home to Leicester City by 2-1 and piled on the misery for the Elland Road outfit at the start of this campaign. Manager Davey said “If you had told me we’d have 1 point from our opening 3 games at the start of this season, after having 2 home games and 1 away, I’d have said you been talking rubbish, but that is where we stand today. As the manager I’ve got to remain upbeat and positive, things defiantly looked better in our last game despite the result and we’ve got to build on those positives. We have a tricky game on Wednesday at Colchester City, I’m hoping that our season we start there.”

Xerez 0-2 Athletico Madrid

Jake Alexiuk's Athletico Madrid last night went up against Xerez in the Spanish Sheild Round 1 in what was Jake Alexiuk's first game in charge of the club. A 22,000 capacity was packed inside the Nuevo Chapín and were ready to witness what was to be an amazing competetive game. There was nothing in the game until the 32nd minute when Matti Lund Nielsen smashed a shot past José Maria Chema Jimenez in the Xerez goal and the Athletico Madrid fans were estatic as they went 1-0 ahead. Mariano Pernia then rapped up the game on the 70th mine when he was 20 yards out from the Xerez goal with he's amazing left foot he managed to fly in to the top corner of the net and ensure Athletico Madrid progress to the next round easily.

New Man at Tottenham

It was quite an amazing day yesterday for manager Benno Davey. He started the day in search of his 1st 3 points of the season for his, then team, Leeds Utd but it ended up with him watching his new team Tottenham Hotspur pick up 3 points with a win at home against Wigan Athletic. “It all happened so fast” said Davey. “I had my Leeds Utd selected and ready to earn their first win away at Colchester Utd (they did eventually win 2-0, as well). Then Spurs came in with an offer I couldn’t refuse, after their manager walked out on them after only 3 league games in to the season. They flew me down straight away and I was able to watch the game from the stands and finally got to meet the players and worked with them this morning” added Davey.

Tottenham Hotspur came out with this statement –

It was a surprise to everyone here when the manager walked out on us just before kick off last night. We had to act fast and knew Davey had a great record in the top flight, even though he wasn’t setting the world alight with Leeds. I think we got the right man for the job but only time will tell. As a club we are looking for stability and I know Davey will give us that, we expect the team to finish in the top 6 this season and even fight for a SMFA Champions Cup spot.
