Man of the Match

Livingston manager, Myran Szostak, described his sides 2-0 win against Hamilton as Incredible. Hamilton who are a divison higher than livingston and previously knocked out Celtic in the 1st round of the cup will be bitterly dissapionted with themselves. However, credit must go to Livingston who were inspired by veterans Pavel Verbir and Dwight Yorke as they deserve to be in their Round 3 match against Dunfermiline.

AE Larisa

The story so far

When young manager James Goddard took control of the club at the start of the season everyone associated with the club expected nothing except a hard and ultimately dissapointing season.

But after 14 games the club are 11 points clear of second place giants Panathinaikos and are now starting to look like a realy useful footballing side.

Although questions have been asked after putting out a very weak side in the shield against giants Olympiacos and being embarrased 6-1. Many pundits have accused him of putting all his eggs in one basket.

Goddard has already stated his intent to try and bring a new generation through at the club. This is in evidence in the signings he's made with them capturing the signatures of young Richard Stearman, Seydou Doumbia and highly rated Aleksander Pesic along with a few other talented youngsters. Also right back Zanni was bought in to add his undoubtible experience to the squad.

The key man so far has been experienced Polish striker Maciej Zurawski who has scored a key 11 goals in 13 games so far this campaign.

The question is now whether Goddards men can continue to surpass all expectations and break the dominance of the bigger teams in Greece.

Goddard has also stated that he is in need of two 85+ players on loan for the rest of the campaign to add to the small squad he currently has.

Right I am loving Notts County atm. Top of the league still uneaten in the league mainly with the help of 3 loaned players in Laverry a 85 rated F' date=' Lupatelli a 82 rated G and holek a 85 rated CM. But I have brought in 23 risers and most of them are summer risers which is great news.[/quote']

Lost my unbeaten record after I posted that:p

Notts County have stated that they would be making only 1 more signing before stopping all transfer activities. Notts County have bought 24 players in sold 12.

Still top of the league by 4 points.

Match Preview

Palmeiras vs Sao Paulo

The top 2 of the Brazilian League face off on Saturday, with Sao Paulo manager Jack Harvey branding it 'The Biggest Game Of The Season So Far'. This match is always fiercely competitive, but this local derby sees 1st play 2nd in the Campeonato Brasiliero First Division. Important fixtures are coming thick and fast for Sao Paulo, with an SMFA Cup Round 1 Leg 1 match on Monday against Chelsea, and the manager has made his priorities for the season clear. "As great as it would be for us to progress further in the SMFA Cup, Chelsea are a great team and we're not all that optimistc of our chances over both legs. I will still be putting out a team to cause an upset on Monday, but the match on Saturday is more important to us."

Palmeiras have emerged as Sao Paulo's main rivals for the league title after defeating Santos and Internacional in recent weeks. They're unbeaten in 8 league games, and a win on Saturday would move them within 2 points off the top spot. A Sao Paulo win would increase the lead at the top to at least 7points, depending on the results of Internacional and Santos.

The two teams have already played eachother twice so far, and both boast the same record. Palmeiras won 3-1 at the Palestra Italia Stadium on the 9th May, while Sao Paulo reciprocated that same result in their home fixture at Estadio do Morumbi.

Key Battles

andredias.gifvs Keirrison_1892839.jpg

Palmeiras striker Keirrison has already scored 13 goals this season and will prove a handful for Andre Dias, who has been specifically given the task to man mark the young striker.

22306_200x250.jpgvs 15399_200x250.jpg

Humberlito Borges has scored 4 in his last 4 league games and is in top form. Palmeiras defender Franchin Gustavo has handled Borges well in previous meetings but will have to perform to the top of his ability if he is to repeat this.

16857-gattuso.jpgvs diego-souza.jpg

Gennaro Gattuso has been a model professional since joining Sao Paulo. He has grabbed 10 goals this season but his performance needs to be more disciplined on Saturday to cope with the attacking prowess of Diego Souza, who has impressed in recent performances for Palmeiras.

Champions League Round 1 Leg 1

Sao Paulo Earn Shock Win At Stamford Bridge

Brazilian Division 1 Leaders Sao Paulo have snatched a memorable victory from Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Both teams named a weakened team from their respective league games on Saturday, though the Chelsea line up still boasted stars such as Didier Drogba, Michael Ballack and Florent Malouda. Sao Paulo started brightly and despite an early save from keeper Rogerio Ceni, they took the lead just seconds later. Alex Mineiro scored an absolute screamer to silence the Stamford Bridge rendition of 'Carefree'. The 34 year old striker, formerly of Gremio, was staking a claim for more first team football. Tijani Belaid almost grabbed the equaliser in the 8th minute when he hit the crossbar, but just two minutes later, he couldn't miss from just a yard out. The West Londoners weren't about to settle for one, though. Didier Drogba nudged Chelsea ahead in the 17th minute. The Ivory Coast international found himself free of the defence, and coolly went round Ceni and tapped home. After coming from behind several times already this season, Sao Paulo knew they had to dig deep to do it again, especially against much tougher opponents. The equaliser came, but more through luck than character. A miss-hit strike from Freitas Kleber squirmed under Petr Cech's body. The Czech international wasn't in the best form - tonight made his record 10 goals conceded in just 3 games. English manager Jack Harvey would have been pleased going into the break at 2-2, but the scoring wasn't finished. A mix up at the back allowed Freitas Kleber to grab his second of the game, poking past Cech. 3-2 up at half time, Harvey was delighted with his team's efforts, but knew that there were another 45 minutes to be played.

Shinji Kagawa, the promising Japanese international and Champions League debutant, had a great chance almost immediately after the restart. A scramble in the six yard box eventually fell to the midfielder but his weak shot was straight at the Chelsea stopper. Ignoring their manager's instructions to 'keep it tight', the Brazilina leaders went in search of the 4th. Alex Mineiro, Aparecido Cesar and Oleh Husev had chances to extend the lead but none were able to convert them. A nervy ending was inevitable for Harvey's team, and Florent Malouda was just inches from levelling the match. Sao Paulo just hung on to the 3-2 lead, giving them something to protect in what will undoubtedly be a tricky second leg in Brazil.

In his post-match interview, Harvey was predictably ecstatic at the result and the performance. "The win was great, of course, but I thought the manner of the performance was fantastic tonight. We had more of the ball and created more clear cut chances. I know Chelsea weren't at their strongest tonight, but that team was still a strong team and we needed to be at our best to get anything from it." When asked about his chances in the second leg, Harvey seemed cautious yet optimistic. "We're not going to get carried away. The game comes at a tough time for us, as we have Santos just two days before, who are currently just behind us. That game will be huge for us, as will this, so I have a difficult decision to make. Do I think we can win it? If we perform like we did tonight, we have every chance."

The second leg will be live on Sky Sports 2, and Sky Sports HD 2 on the 24th July.

Elsewhere in the Champions League tonight-

Internazionale 2-1 Roma

Internazionale defeated fellow Italians Roma 2-1 at the San Siro, thanks to a double from Juan Manuel Mata.

Chivas de Guadalajara 0-2 Fiorentina

Fiorentina got two important away goals in Mexico, beating Chivas de Guadalajara 2-0.

PSV 1-2 Barcelona

All the goals came in the first half in Holland as Barcelona beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1.

Villarreal 3-4 Real Madrid

Fans were treated to a thriller at El Madigral. Real Madrid came away with a 4-3 victory against Villarreal. An 87th minute goal from Robert Pires turned out to be just consolation for the home team, but they could still go to the Bernebau victorious.

Juventus 0-2 Boca Juniors

A surprise result in Turin saw Boca Juniors defeat Juventus by two goals to nil. Martin Palermo and Paolo Sammarco grabbed the goals for the South Americans.

Shakhtar 1-0 Celtic

A 1-0 victory for the home team sees the second leg evenly poised. Luis Fernandinho got the only goal of the game in the first half.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Manchester United

German striker Miroslav Klose scored a superb solo effort 6 minutes before the break to see off Man United. The second leg will undoubtedly be a match not to be missed at Old Trafford.

New Boss at Mallorca

With Mallorca second from bottom in the Spanish first division having played 23 games so far and only winning 3, drawing 6 and losing 14 there was demand for a change at the top and it came in the form of Englishman Alex Thom.

With no money to spend on new players for now, the new Mallorca boss said hes happy with the squad hes got and believes that with a kick up the **** it can perform well enough to finish mid table and away from the danger of a drop to the second division.

The new boss hopes to start his climb out from the bottom three away at sporting tonight.

Sao Paulo battled to a crucial 4-2 victory over Santos tonight to stay top of the league. With 10 games left of the season, Palmeiras remain Sao Paulo's fierecest rivals as they currently trail by three points, while Santos are now 7 points behind the leaders. Sao Paulo host Chelsea on Friday night in the SMFA Champions Cup Round 1 Leg 2, after earning a 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge - Harvey agonised over which competition to prioritise and eventually decided that their chances of winning the league were much higher than the prestigious SMFA Cup.

Sao Paulo were under pressure tonight in front of their home fans at Morumbi, after failing to win in two games. Their form didn't look like improving early on as Santos made the early running. They got their rewards in the 31st minute when Luis Bolanos calmly chipped the keeper after a terrific run through the middle. With Sao Paulo facing another half-time rant from their English manager, Gennaro Gattuso's 42nd minute effort struck the post before crossing the line to level the sides going into the break.

Half Time: 1-1

After his two goals at Stamford Bridge, Freitas Kleber earnt a starting role tonight, and he didn't disappoint. He edged Sao Paulo in front just after the whistle. His effort looked to be going wide but a wicked deflection wrong-footed the goalkeeper and rolled into the corner. Just two minutes later, that man again made it 3-1. Kleber receieved the ball on the left hand side, skipped past Santos right back Nascimento Domingos before curling a beauty into the top corner. Santos weren't going to give up that easily though. In the 58th minute, Santos Roni picked up the ball just inside Sao Paulo's half and ran at speed at the home defence, and eventually finished past Rogerio Ceni to put Santos right back in the match. Humberlito Borges effectively ended the match when he took advantage of slack defending. A vital win for Sao Paulo tonight, and they host Gremio on Saturday night.

Sao Paulo Bag Six Against Flamengo To Stretch Lead At The Top!

After Saturday's 4-0 demolition of title rivals Palmeiras, Sao Paulo went in to their match at Flamengo last night in good spirits, knowing that only a win would guarantee them to stay at the top of the table. Flamengo's veteran striker Claudio Bellucci was intent on spoiling the party for Sao Paulo when he opened the scoring after just eight minutes. A back pass fell short of the keeper and Bellucci took full advantage. Sao Paulo's left winger Jorge Wagner equalised for the away side on 25 minutes. Wagner found himself through on goal and cleverly lobbed the goal keeper to the delight of the travelling fans. Just before the break, Sao Paulo's top goalscorer Humberlito Borges edged them to a narrow lead when his deflected effort wrong-footed Fernandes Bruno and went in the opposite corner. Just one minute into the second half and Jonathan de Guzman made it 3-1. The young Dutchman found himself in acres of space, and picked his spot perfectly. Javi Navarro then got in on the act just two minutes later, when he ran through one-on-one with F.Bruno, and slotted home comfortably. Gennaro Gattuso grabbed the fifth with a stunning volley before Humberlito Borges completed the rout four minutes from time. The win stretches the gap at the top to four points with three games remaining. Fluminense are Sao Paulo's next opponents, and have already beaten the table-toppers twice in three attempts this season, with all of the previous meetings ending 2-1. A win for Sao Paulo would leave them just needing a win next Wednesday night to secure the league title in what has been a dramatic season, with four teams challenging for the top spot.

Humberlito Borges' brace took his tally for the season to an impressive 17 in 29 appearances. Borges was named man of the match for his performance at Flamengo last night, his tenth MOM award of the season.

Sao Paulo will travel to Santos tomorrow night, knowing that a win will guarantee them the league title. Sao Paulo have been there or thereabouts for much of this season, yo-yoing between 1st and 2nd in recent weeks. Their biggest win came just over a week ago when they defeated biggest rivals Palmeiras 4-0. That win lifted them above Palmeiras, and since then Sao Paulo have picked up maximum points to extend their lead. Tomorrow night's opponents, Santos, were one of Sao Paulo's biggest rivals up until a week ago when a 1-0 defeat away at Fluminense ended their title charge. Sao Paulo currently top the table by four points with two games to go, meaning that 2nd place Palmeiras must win their home fixture against Cruzeiro - a draw simply won't do due to Sao Paulo's goal difference being 18 goals better off. Manager Jack Harvey spoke exclusively to the club's official website:

"I'm pleased with the season we've had. I think the most disappointing aspect of this year has been the fact we've lost 9 games, 7 of which were just by one goal. During the mid-season, we looked like we were gonna run away with the league, but a bad spell in late July allowed others back into the race, and credit to Palmeiras for getting within touching distance of us."

When asked about his side's efforts in the SMFA Champions Cup, he said "I thought we gave a real good go of it. Just to qualify from a group with teams like Juventus, Lyon and FC Schalke 04 was good enough for me. Then we went to Stamford Bridge in the first round and sneaked a 3-2 win. I remember in the second leg at our place, we were 0-0 at half time and I was thinking what a great win it could be for us. But then their quality shone through and they ended up beating us 2-0 on the night, 4-3 on aggregate. I think some fans weren't happy that I played a second string side, but I feel vindicated now by our league position. Our main priority was to win the league, and we had a far better chance of achieving this than winning the SMFA Champions Cup. Hopefully there won't be any slip ups fromus in these last two games and we can go on to lift the trophy."
