PORTUGAL - 1st Division extensive thread

Recommended Posts

As mentioned some weeks earlier I will embrace the challenge of creating and keep updated a thread about the Portuguese league. However, I won't do it alone. A fellow friend of mine, the SM player/forumer and a dedicated Porto fan, Euronight, agreed to help me and together we will do the most complete Portuguese thread on the forum. This thread will basically include the rating predictions of all players in all clubs of Liga Zon Sagres, the Portuguese 1st division. Subjects such as new players/signings, hot prospects, opinions on all players of the Portuguese league and comments on the fixtures played will be made in the Discussion Thread (link below). Note that the 2nd division won't be reviewed in the thread, but again I'm fully open to answer any questions about it in the Discussion Thread. Also, we would like to keep this thread clean of comments aside from our own. Questions and comments should be made in the Discussion Thread. If anyone has a question regarding a player's rating, current form, transfer rumours, etc. post it there or alternatively post it as a visitor message, preferentially to both of us to get a faster answer. This will keep the thread much more readable and it will be easier to look for certain information in the first pages.

The predictions listed here were made taking into account the last fixtures of the 2010/2011 season and obviously the 2011/2012 season. The date of the last update is displayed at the end of each post.

EuroNight should come soon and make his introduction.

Regards and enjoy.

EDIT: Due to the amount of comments made in this thread without reading the introduction I feel it is necessary to inform once again that there exists a comments/questions/discussion thread over this one here.

EDIT 2: The forumers pedro r. and pedropt10 agreed lending a hand on the predictions of some of the clubs. Whenever they helped in either the prediction or update of a team it will be indicated below. As such, credit for the contents of this thread should go to them as well.

**Elisson decided to terminate his contract with Nacional after learning he would spend the next matches on the bench. He played 10 full games as a starter, thus I'm still backing him to get a low rise despite not playing in Portugal any more. Nacional's current starter in the goal is Marcelo Valverde who is not on the database.

Re: PORTUGAL - 1st Division extensive thread

The second part of the thread consists in two compilations: the best risers for the next ratings change and the most talented young players in the league.

Hot prospects:

James Rodríguez (FC Porto) - 87 --> 89/88 James is currently the brightest spark in Porto's otherwise fairly poor start to the season. He was André Villas-Boas' choice to compete for a place in the wings last season. His adaptation to the European football went rather quickly and despite not playing much in his first 6 months with the club it was only a matter of time before he displaced Varela in the starting squad afterwards. Since his last review (20th May) he played 11 matches for Porto, scoring 8 goals and grabbing 5 assists. This includes the last match of the 2010/2011 season (after the review was complete), which was an MotM performance against Guimarães in the Portuguese Cup final. He scored an hattrick and left everyone drooling at the prospect of seeing him play next season. Unfortunately for Porto he was summoned to represent Colombia in the U-20 World Cup. This meant he would miss Porto's first three matches, including the European Supercup clash against Barcelona. Anyway, he was elected Colombia's captain and lived up to his reputation by scoring 3 goals and providing 2 assists in 5 matches. Colombia eventually fell out of the tournament against rivals Mexico, but James' performances in the competition earned him rave reviews. More recently he finally made his transition to the National Team squad, playing the full 90 minutes in Colombia's first match of the qualifiers for the 2012 WC, which ended with an important victory against Bolivia. Once again James was considered MotM, creating dangerous opportunities for his team mates as well as leading a counter-attack which eventually resulted in Falcao's winner in the dying minutes of the game. So this is where we stand: James is currently rated at 87 and he will easily rise to 89. This was the exact same rise that Varela had one year ago, the difference is that James is playing Champions League football (Varela was playing in Europa League) and James is now starting for Colombia (Varela only made his debut for Portugal later). However I wouldn't rule out 88 as well due to a couple of matches spent on the bench more recently. At 20 years of age we're looking at one of the most promising footballers of the Portuguese League and it won't take long before the bids start raining...

Kléber (FC Porto) - 84 --> 87 Not remotely as important to the squad as James, the Brazilian made a decent impact himself. Kléber joined on a cheap deal from Brazilian club At. Mineiro after playing two seasons on loan to the Portuguese club Marítimo. Most of Porto's fans were expecting a big signing after Falcao's departure, but after seeing a huge bid for Damião get rejected Kléber was the only replacement available given Walter's personal problems. So, OK, Kléber's scoring record looks pale in comparison to Falcao's, but I believe we're still very far from seeing the best Kléber in action. His tally is set at 6 goals in 15 matches which I believe is enough for a rise to 87, still fairly low for a starter in Porto mind you. Surprisingly, Mano Menezes decided to call him for his debut with the National Team due to several injuries on more important players (Pato and Damiao), but Kléber himself suffered from a dislocated shoulder in the match against Zenit and had to skip the trip to Brazil. Eventually he made grabbed his first cap on an international friendly against Gabon. Kléber is definitely one to look out for. As soon as he reaches the same form he had in Marítimo he'll start banging them in regularly. He's one of those players who'll keep rising steadily, so make sure you don't sell him too soon.

Gaitán (Benfica) - 88 --> 89/90 Seen as a short-term replacement for Di Maria and a long-term replacement for Aimar, Gaitán established himself as one of the most flamboyant players in Portugal this season. He's very quick, possesses the typical South-American technique and has a knack for scoring screamers. Gaitán is one of those players who is simply unstoppable on his day, adding that extra flair to the match. While not always being Benfica's most effective player he's certainly the flashiest. He still suffers from the trequartista syndrome, so yeah he has a couple of matches where he's pretty much inconsequent, but all in all every team should look to have one of these. He's very similar to Nasri and it's no wonder that Manchester United are looking to get their hands on him. I have him down to a +1 with an outside chance of a +2. He doesn't play much for Argentina and honestly I think he should end the next ratings change with the same rating as James (89) but he might make it to 90, you never know it with SM these days...

Rodrigo (Benfica) - 82 --> 85 Real Madrid made Benfica pay a hefty sum for Rodrigo last season (6 million euros) and most people were sceptical over his loan move to Bolton. Apparently he did well enough in England to convince Bolton to launch another loan bid for him, but he was requested to stay at Benfica this time, and rightly so. Rodrigo has seen his game time increase lately and despite playing only four times as a starter he already has 5 goals to his name. He's also an important player for the youth levels of Spain's National Team and leads the scoring charts with 10 goals in 8 matches with the U-20 and U-21 this year. I think he is best suited for an inside forward role, seeing that he is capable of playing both as a striker and as a winger, but Benfica always puts a 4-4-2 into use, which might not be the best formation for Rodrigo. I'd play him over Saviola since the Argentinian has never been able to recover the form he had in his first year in Benfica. The manager is slowly starting to agree with this. Rodrigo should have even more first team opportunities in the future if Saviola leaves in January and I'm backing him to do well.

Carrillo (Sporting CP) - 78 --> 83 It had been a while since Sporting had decent wingers. This year they made three good signings for that position. One of them is Carrillo. How to describe this guy... Well, he's Nani's clone. Extremely fast, loves to cut inside and his dribbling ability allows him to cripple the Portuguese defenders without breaking a sweat. As soon as he undergoes a physical transformation similar to Nani's I'm sure he's going places. He was reviewed recently in the South-American section, but honestly I thought a +2 was unfair for his deeds with Allianza Lima. He hasn't played much as a starter for Sporting (Capel is favoured) but he has made his debut for Peru. Granted, they aren't the strongest South-American National Team, but playing for a National Team and being rated 78 doesn't make sense to me. I predicted a +5 although a +4 would also be fair. Keep an eye on him.

Rubio (Sporting CP) - 75 --> 80 Another South-American prospect that went to Sporting this season. Colo-Colo fans were disappointed to lose him so cheaply and I think Sporting made a great bargain. Rubio had a lot of highlights in the pre-season but the manager prefers to use a single striker in his formation and Rubio's game time has been limited due to Wolfswinkel's great form. At just 18 he was capped twice for Chile's National Team (probably to avoid being eligible for Germany, but hey, it still counts!) and he skipped the Chilean rating change due to his transfer move. As such I predict a rise to 80 for the lad, specially for his performances in Libertadores where he scored some important goals for Colo-Colo. I would give him a +7, but I know SM will never be so generous. I don't see him as mere money spinner, so keep him. The season is very long and he's young enough to take his time before breaking into the squad.

Wilson Eduardo (Olhanense, on loan from Sporting CP) - 80 --> 83 I made a scout report on Wilson Eduardo two years ago so I won't dwell much on his qualities. I rate him highly and so does the staff at Sporting. He should return to the club next season and fight for a place in the team. Meanwhile he's helping Olhanense with vital goals. 4 goals in 10 matches is a decent record in a mid-table team and Wilson Eduardo cemented a starting place which he'll keep for most of the season. He isn't a money spinner and although it could take a while he has the potential to get at least close to 90.

Kelvin (Rio Ave, on loan from FC Porto) - 77 --> 80 According to our dear Insider, Kelvin is one of the brightest talents to come out of Paraná in recent times. He played an important role for the team, albeit in the 2nd division. Kelvin is a very Robinho-esque player. Agile and flashy with the ball on his feet, he does like to beat his man repeatedly and so far he is the talent behind Rio Ave's attack, although the team is struggling to get results at the moment. I am eagerly anticipating his return next season because he is a player who needs a lot of ball possession to perform at his maximum, and Rio Ave is not the most indicated team for that... Still, playing in the Brazilian 2nd division is a lot different from playing in the Portuguese League and Kelvin is taking this new step with a lot of enthusiasm.

Atsu (Rio Ave, on loan from FC Porto) - 75 --> 80 Atsu is the most talented winger to come out of Porto's youth academy in the past half decade. I know 'cause I've watched him play for the youth team. Rio Ave is among the youngest teams in the league but the lack of experience isn't bothering Atsu even a bit, grabbing the odd goal and assist when it matters most. He's very fast on the ball and his crossing would shame any of Porto's wingers except James. His transition to senior football was better than I thought it would be and although I'm not expecting him to return to Porto next season (I'd like it very much though!) it won't take much longer should he continue to develop at this rate. Surprisingly he never played for Ghana's youth teams nor at the highest level. As such he will be available to play for Portugal soon if he wishes to do so. Definitely a contender to the YPotS.

Guilherme (Gil Vicente, on loan from Braga) - 75 --> 76 Supposedly Barcelona wanted him at some point. Probably not true but it might give you a hint regarding his potential. Guilherme impressed a lot towards the end of the last season (that's what reports say at least, honestly I never saw him play) and I think it would be sensible to include him in the talents lot. He hasn't played that much for Gil Vicente but to be fair they prefer to use most of the players who handled them the promotion in the first place. He might return to Braga next season and I'd keep him on shortlist just in case.
