Re: English Champ 1 - Youth Championship Thread

End of Season Youth Tournament

Officially cancelled due to lack of facility to call friendlies in the close season.

Season 18 Youth Cup

Okay, let's get something organised for next season.

I'm going to assume that pre-season friendlies can't be arranged so there won't be a pre-season tournament. That's such a shame and I can't understand why SM have set things up that way. However, I do think it's a worthwhile effort to resurrect Machine's original tournament and see if it can become a regular event.

Hence, I'm going to propose a simple straight-forward knockout EC1 Youth Cup. To explain, I don't think too many managers (other than John) would be keen on a long-term commitment. I also want to avoid the problem of too many games being won by default due to ineligible squads. So in order to keep it short and simple, the first round would be a knock-out round of sixteen, followed by quarter-finals, semis and a final. Just four matchdays there, and only fifteen games in total (or less if any teams get byes in round one). Games would be on consecutive Thursdays with the first on 19th April.

I'll post the new rules in the Youth Tournament forum (http://forum.soccermanager.com/showthread.php?t=44779). Can I ask that managers visit that forum and post their willingness to enter a team? I'll leave the eligibility dates at March 1st, so any players who were 21 years old and 85 or under rating can be named. That way, those managers who had entered a squad can leave it in (but can they please visit the forum to confirm they want to take part in the new competition).

Re: English Champ 1 - Youth Championship Thread

Season 18 Youth Cup

The tournament is scheduled to kick off one week tomorrow on Thursday April 19th. I'm going to make an assumption at this stage that we will have between 8 and 16 teams competing, so some teams are likely to have a bye into the quarter finals which will take place the following Thursday.

At present, we have seven confirmed entrants (Carlisle, Luton Town, Darlington, Rushden & Diamonds, Hull City, Millwall and Reading) with another three (West Ham United, Manchester City and Ipswich) who had planned to join the end-of-season tournament not, as yet, confirmed. Of those, Reading and Manchester City would need to submit final squads by Sunday 15th April and I'd like to see as many managers as possible join us by going to the Youth Tournament forum (http://forum.soccermanager.com/showthread.php?t=44779) and posting a squad there. I'll post the draw early on Monday morning so that home managers can issue their friendly challenge in plenty time for the Thursday game.

Hi Tony' date=' To make matters worse Cheltenham are under a transfer embargo so we will have to drop out. Sorry, Alyx[/quote']

Our transfer embargo was lifted last weekend and Cheltenham have invested in a youth squad. Hooray! :)

Not surprisingly, I think we're currently last in the seedings if I've done the maths right, but not by as much as I'd expected.

Here's my squad of 18:

Cheltenham

Philippe Koch 84

Lewis Dunk 82

Sergey Petrov 80

Rafael Lopes 80

Dario Tadic 80

Gustavo Blanco Leschuk 78

Anderson Carvalho 77

Jak Alnwick 75

Harlee Dean 75

Balázs Balogh 75

Ahmed Benali 75

Jack Grimmer 75

Re: English Champ 1 - Youth Championship Thread

The deadline for entries is just over 24 hours away.

We now have nine confirmed entrants (Carlisle, Luton Town, Darlington, Rushden & Diamonds, Hull City, Millwall Reading, Ipswich and Cheltenham) with another two (West Ham United and Manchester City) not, as yet, confirmed. Reading and Manchester City need to submit final squads by tomorrow night. I'd like to see as many managers as possible join us by going to the Youth Tournament forum (http://forum.soccermanager.com/showthread.php?t=44779) and posting a squad there. I'll post the draw early on Monday morning so that home managers can issue their friendly challenge in plenty time for the Thursday game. As we have over 8 and less than 16 teams competing, some teams are likely to have a bye into the quarter finals which will take place the following Thursday.

Please come and join in.

Re: English Champ 1 - Youth Championship Thread

Season 18 Youth Cup

As promised, here's the plan for the Youth Cup.

We have nine confirmed entrants. Man City have dropped out and there's no word from WHU. Of the nine confirmed entries, 8 have submitted squads which meet the criteria set (Reading failed to submit a team). I'm therefore going to make an exectutive decision to give those 8 teams (Carlisle, Luton Town, Darlington, Rushden & Diamonds, Hull City, Millwall, Ipswich and Cheltenham) byes into the Quarter Finals which will take place as planned on on Thursday April 26th. The draw is published below.

If Reading, West Ham or any other team still want to enter, they will now have to issue challenges in what amounts to a Qualifiying Round on April 19th. No team is obliged to accept a challenge.

A few players have been disbarred from the tournament because they were born before March 1st 1990 or because they've left their clubs:

Cornel Rapa - 16 January 1990

Kaj Ramsteijn - 17 January 1990

Dan Gosling - 2 February 1990

Santos Edenilson - 18 December 1989

Matt Doherty - Lincoln City

Pietro Iemmello - Pergocrema

The full squads will be posted under a separate message. Hence the seed ratings are:

# Team Seed

1 Carlisle 84.45

2 Rushden & Diamonds 83.73

3 Luton Town 83.64

4 Darlington 83.45

5 Millwall 81.09

6 Hull City 80.64

7 Ipswich 79.55

8 Cheltenham 78.27

On to the draw (arranged by seed rank):

Quarter Finals

Cheltenham v Carlisle

Ipswich v Rushden & Diamonds

Hull City v Luton Town

Millwall v Darlington

Semi Finals

Cheltenham or Carlisle v Millwall or Darlington

Ipswich or Rushden & Diamonds v Hull City or Luton Town

Final

Cheltenham or Carlisle or Millwall or Darlington

v

Ipswich or Rushden & Diamonds or Hull City or Luton Town

So, if anybody wants to join the tournament now, you'll have to submit a valid squad and challenge one of our eight teams to a match on Thursday. Cheltenham, Ipswich, Hull and Millwall are welcome to go ahead and book their games for the 26th April at any time over the next week or so.

It's over to our competitors now.

In the event of a draw, a replay will be arranged for the following Sunday. Should that game also end in a draw, the result will be decided by a penalty shootout. Penalties wll only be taken by players on the pitch at the end of the game. The order of the penalty takers will be in descending order of shirt number. A penalty will be scored if the player's rating exceeds the opposing goalkeeper's rating. If, after five penalties each, the result is tied, sudden death will follow until all of the available penalty takers from the team with the lowest number of players on the pitch have taken a kick. If the result remains tied, the first five players will retake their kicks, but using Full Match Statistics (i.e Possession, Total Shots, etc) where an unequal score means the player with the lower statistic (or higher in the case of Bookings and Sendings off) has failed to score. If all of those statistics are equal - I give up!

There were no games arranged for the first (qualifying) round on Thursday, so we progress directly to the Quarter Finals stage this week with games to be arranged for Thursday 26th April.

We have one of the ties already set up, so thank you to the managers of Cheltenham and Carlisle for being quick on the draw. Can Ipswich, Hull and Millwall please propose friendlies as soon as possible to give their opponents time to accept?

Quarter Finals

Cheltenham v Carlisle

Ipswich v Rushden & Diamonds

The Quarter Finals are tomorrow night. Please remember to change your line-up tonight so that all 18 players are from your listed squad. Those players eligible to play are listed in the Youth Championship Forum if you've forgotten who you submitted.

May the best teams win.
