Klaas-Jan Huntelaar gave Madrid the first half lead

Barcelona held their closest rivals Real Madrid 1-1 in this highly-anticipated match at Camp Nou which give a much favour for league leaders Manchester United to win the Division 1 title with three games left. United will still win the title even though they lost all their last three games and Madrid won all as they have a superior goal difference compared to Madrid one. Dean Bryant's side have not won a home match since 4 July and they were again fustrated by a stubborn Madrid side, who took the lead through Klaas-Jan Huntelaar after 22 minutes. And Barcelona, missing Lionel Messi through injury, struggled to find a way back into the game. The Catalans eventually equalised through Andrés Iniesta after 64 minutes, but were unable to secure the second victory against bitter rivals Madrid this season.

Iniesta (left) celebrates his equaliser with Xavi who set up the goal

Barcelona began the first half convincingly with Seydou Keita put in a lot of running and determination at the central of the park. Ferreira Pepe started the first attack for the visitors with some brilliant work down the right flank but a weak pass was easily intercepted by Éric Abidal. A lovely pass from Hernández Xavi leave Keita with time and space but shot wide. Without Messi in the starting lineup, Barcelona struggled to find rhythm, though, and Madrid were more than a match for their illustrious rivals early on. But it was still something of a surprise when Huntelaar fired the visitors into the lead after 22 minutes. The Dutchman read the game well and quickly ran towards the goal and fired home from one yard after receiving a low cross from a fellow Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart. After that moment, Barça began to find some motivation to fight back. Xavi almost hit back straight away for the Catalans, but saw his easy tap-in somehow went wide. Barça continued to throw men out in the attack with Iniesta shot went over the bar after an impressive solo in the middle of the park. Samuel Eto'o had an effort on goal but Madrid keeper Iker Casillas dived to his left and make a great save. Xavi had another chance to capitalise before the break but blast wide after Madrid defence failed to clear a loose ball.

The Catalans continued to dominated after the interval and Eto'o were unlucky not to get on the scoresheet when his clear shot hit the post. Four minutes later, Arjen Robben missed a good opportunity to double his side's lead and the Dutchman headed over inches wide from six yard. Barça had to rely on Xavi for some creativity on the midfield and help his side to get the equaliser shortly after hour mark. Xavi whipped in a dangerous corner into the box and Iniesta headed home the equaliser. After a dreadful impact on the first half, González Raul went close to get back the lead for his side but his glancing header went inches wide. Real Madrid began to push men forward looking for the winning goal, knowing they will be out of title race if they fail to do so. Barça keeper Sebastien Frey took the centre stage with a string of important saves late in the game to prevent Madrid from taking home all the three points and also the second consecutive league title. Real Madrid are now facing more setbacks as Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ribas Diego picked an injury which will rule them out of the season.

Barcelona are still fourth in the table with fifteen points from eleven games. Real Madrid, meanwhile, remain second behind newly-crowned champion Manchester United with eighteen points, a full nine points different.

Cazorla signs new contract at Barcelona

Monday, 3 August 2009

santicazorla.jpg

Santi Cazorla signed new five-season deal

Barcelona's title hope for this season may be over but they were boosted with the news that Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla has agreed a new five-season deal at Barcelona. The deal could see the 24-year-old earn a hefty £119,700-a-week. Cazorla's current contract deal was due to expire at the end of next season but has committed to the club until the end of season 11. Reacting to the news, Barça manager Dean Bryant told the club's website: "We are pleased to announced Santi Cazorla has agreed a new deal with the club. He was one of my first few signings when I join this club and to know he's staying for a long period is another great boost for the squad. This shows that many players are committed to the club."

With star player Lionel Messi out injured for the rest of the season, Santi Cazorla, who return from suspension, will deputise the Argentinian on the right wing role for the remaining three games while Mikel Arteta and Stephane Sessegnon failed to provide the consistency in the team over the past weeks. Cazorla said: "I'm glad to remain in this club for many more seasons as I believe this club can move forward and achieve something. We have lost Messi for the rest of the season and I am ready to take his place and help this team win games."

Dean confirms Barça contract talks with Eto'o

Tuesday, 4 August 2009

Samuel Eto'o with his Golden Boot award last season

Barcelona manager Dean Bryant has confirmed they are working on a new contract for star man Samuel Eto'o. Reports suggest the Catalan club are to offer the 28-year-old £1.4m per season and increase his release clause, which currently stands at £30m, to £60m. Dean and other club officials have already met with Eto'o's agent to discuss the matter and the Barça head coach insists the Cameroonian striker is worthy every penny.

"There's a very good relationship between both parties," he told the club's website. "They know that Barça want the player to feel happy here. He's a great player; we are proud to have him in the team. Everything's going along well. Barça will always do whatever is necessary to keep Eto'o happy at the club and we know that Eto'o has a complete commitment to Barça. This commitment had to be repaid on all levels. The club will always equal that commitment and love he has for Barça."

The mooted new deal would see Eto'o, who has spent his entire career at Barcelona since the start of European Championship, as the second top paid player at the Nou Camp behind skipper Carles Puyol. Eto'o was the top scorer of European Championship Division One last season with eleven goals and with five goals and two assists to his name in the current campaign, Eto'o is widely viewed as the favourites for the Division One Best Player of the Year award.

Messi sidelined for seven weeks

Lionel Messi: Out for 7 weeks with dislocated shoulder

Barcelona star man Lionel Messi is expected to be sidelined for seven weeks after undergoing surgery on a dislocated shoulder. The 22-year-old Argentinian was hurt after clashing with Cristian Chivu in the 3-0 victory against AC Milan last week. Messi is already expected to be out of action until the end of the season but after the surgery, specialists have confirmed that the player could only return to normal training on 21st September, meaning he will also miss most of the next season campaign. Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Stephane Sessegnon will bid to fight for the right wing spot in the Barça starting lineup left by the superstar. Cazorla started only four times in the current season before the Messi injury due to the three match suspension but is likely to be given the nod after started the previous match against Real Madrid. Barça have three more fixtures before the end of the season and Dean Bryant will use these matches to assess who will become first choice for next season.

Barcelona held to another draw

keita.jpg

Seydou Keita celebrates his goal

Barcelona recorded their second consecutive draws as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Atlético Madrid. Dean Bryant's side were seeking a morale-boosting victory to erase the failure of winning the league title this season, but were well unlucky against an ultra-defensive Madrid outift. Following long spells of dominance, Seydou Keita finally gave the Catalans the lead before the hour mark, but the visitors hit back shortly afterwards through Yoan Gourcuff to sum up a frustrating evening. Dean had played a similar 4-2-3-1 formation in the last three matches but could only see his side held to another 1-1 draw following their 3-0 victory against AC Milan.

Atlético Madrid began the first half optimistically with skipper Marcos Senna tried an ambitious 30 yard drive just over the bar. With Barcelona missing Messi on the teamsheet, Dani Alves was involved in most of Barcelona's attack early on, helping Santi Cazorla on the right flank. Samuel Eto'o had an attempt on goal but rifled his shot wide following an excellent first touch at the edge of the box. Madrid winger Luís Nani almost got himself in the scoresheet but his shot was cleared off the line by Carles Puyol. The crowd began to show their frustration as Barça struggled to break down a disciplined Madrid rearguard, and Barça's effort were not help by a harsh yellow card on Éric Abidal. Alves were denied by the woodwork with his diving header near the post. Keita had the chance to put the home side the first half lead but his tap-in somehow went wide. Sebastien Frey took the centre stage in the last ten minutes left before the break with some top class saves. Frey pulled off a spectacular save to stop a six yard shot. Frey then dived to his left to prevent a curling shot from Sergio Aguero.

puyol_pernia.jpg

The visitors started to dominate the game more after the interval with Nani threatened the home side down the wing with little interference from the Barça defence. Nani skipped past Dani Alves and made a cross into the far post where Vedran Corluka headed wide. Hernández Xavi had the best chance to put his side the lead but his shot went tribbly wide. The pressure eventually told when Keita gave Barça the opening goal shortly afterwards. Keita rounded the Madrid keeper Rogerio Ceni before fired home into the empty net. The advantage as shortlived as Atlético hit back seven minutes later, Gourcuff sticking out a foot to deflect Sabrosa Simao's freekick past a helpless Frey.

Atlético Madrid moved up to second place after drawing all their previous four games. Barcelona, meanwhile, remain fourth in the table, having taken six points from six games.

Barcelona accept Bordeaux bid for defender Iraola

andoniiraola.jpg

Andoni Iraola set to leave Barça

Barcelona have reportedly accepted an offer from Bordeaux for defender Andoni Iraola. Both clubs have come to an agreement on a fee believed to be around £9million. It is understood that Deportivo La C, Hamburg SV and Panathinaikos are also reported to have offered their bid. Iraola has failed to established himself as regular in the Catalan club since joining them four seasons ago. Iraola, 27, will be free to talk to Bordeaux now an accord has been struck between the two clubs.

Iraola's fellow defender Alessandro Gamberini, meanwhile, looks set to be staying at the Nou Camp - for the time being at least - after Atlético Madrid have rejected a swap deal for Maxi Rodriguez. Atlético were unimpressed by Barça's valuation of the 28-year-old Maxi, who has yet to start a match this season after an outburst with manager J Ho. Dean said: "They have rejected our offer that we believe is the best for both parties. We will still keep track on the player but it may take longer for us to prepare another improve bid."

Eto'o signs new five-season deal with Barcelona

samuel_etoo-1.jpg

Samuel Eto'o has pledged his future to the Dean regime at Barça

Samuel Eto'o has signed a new contract with Barcelona, which will tie him to the Catalan club until the end of Season 11. Eto'o, who was awarded the SMFA Player of the Year last season, was previously unhappy with the manager when he was used as makeweight in a deal to bring in Liverpool hitman Fernando Torres. The 28-year-old has now ended the speculation that he will leave this season after signing the new five-season contract. Newspaper reports have suggested the new deal will put the Cameroon international on £195,520-a-week, making him the second highest paid Barça player along with Andrés Iniesta. Captain Carles Puyol remain the top earners in the club.

A club statement read: "Barcelona are delighted to confirmed that Samuel Eto'o has signed a new five-season contract that keeps him at the club until the end of the Season 11. This reaffirms both Samuel's and Barcelona's long-stated desire for him to be at Camp Nou for the rest of his playing career."

Eto'o's contract was due to expire in the end of this season, and this new deal will take him to stay for another five seasons. He has made 64 appearances in 6 seasons at Camp Nou, aiding the club with 31 goals and 27 assists.

Barcelona sign Marin, Rodriguez joined Viola

17_marin_g.jpg

Marko Marin: Barcelona's new recruit

Barcelona have completed the signing of Newell's Old Boys winger Marko Marin, according to the club's official website. The fee is thought to be in the region of £15.5m. Marin revealed his mind was made up on a move to Barcelona as soon as he met Dean Bryant, and that the ambition of the manager was a massive pull as he completed a switch from Argentina club Newell's Old Boys this afternoon. He has also revealed that Werder Bremen are also in the race to acquire his service but opted to join the Spanish giants.

"I am really pleased to be joining Barcelona. It's a massive football club with good ambition," he told the club's website. "It is a dream come true for me and to play for a big club like Barcelona, it is a big step for me. I'm ready for the new challenge."

"It's certainly been a some speculation for me for the past weeks but I tried to switch off and get a good break before the new season starts. Saying that, when it became apparent that Barcelona were interested I was very excited. I wanted to come as soon as I met Dean Bryant so I am delighted it's now sorted out. I was about to join Werder Bremen but as soon as I know Barcelona are also looking to sign me, I had to reconsider Bremen's offer. It was obvious that Barcelona were a club that have good history. You can see a chairman and manager who want to build great things. They have done that over the past few seasons, particularly after Dean Bryant took Barcelona back to Division 1 in his first season."

"You can see there are so many world class talent in the squad like Messi, Eto'o and Xavi. It's an honour to be playing alongside them. And once you get here and see the stadium, the training ground, the people behind the scenes and the manager with his ambition and hopes for the future, it's even better than you realised."

In other transfer news, Gabriel Cristian Rodriguez has completed his switch to Fiorentina after agreeing on personal terms and passing a medical. The deal is reported to be around £9m.

Barça midfielder Granero departs for Atlético Madrid

Esteban Granero joins Atlético Madrid on loan

Barcelona midfielder Esteban Granero has completed his move to Atlético Madrid on a season loan deal. The 22-year-old, signed from Getafe for a total fee of £7.3m last season, has agreed to join Jo H's side and could feature in their opening Division 1 clash with Manchester United. Granero made a single start during their disappointing season and the capture of Marko Marin has pushed him firmly down Dean Bryant's plan. The midfielder will now spend the whole new season at Vicente Calderón where he will be given more first team opportunity. Granero, however, will be ineligible to face his parent club when both clubs meet in league clashes.

Barcelona sign Milan defender van der Wiel

PA-7065199.jpg

Gregory van der Wiel sealed his Barça move

Barcelona have completed the signing of versatile Netherlands defender Gregory van der Wiel from AC Milan. The 21-year-old, who can play either centrally or on the right, passed a medical on Tuesday and will bolster a defence that came under fire from all quarters last season. Barcelona have not disclosed the fee or the length of the 'long term' contract, but van der Wiel's agent recently suggested a four-season deal had been offered to his client and reports estimate the transfer fee to be around £6m.

van der Wiel said: "Barcelona is a great club with a world class manager, high quality players and a fantastic stadium. I just want to assure the fans that I will give everything for this club and I hope we can enjoy winning some trophies together next season. I have had a good taste of European Championship during my time with Milan and this is something I am looking forward to experiencing again with Barcelona."

van der Wiel, who joined AC Milan back in Season 4, added: "I am also looking forward to playing alongside world class players like Messi, Xavi and Eto'o. And for me Barcelona have the best squad in the world."

The Netherlands international, who joined AC Milan in Season 4, has played twice for the Italian giants during their relegation season. van der Wiel, however, failed to retain a spot in the first team in the following season.

"We are delighted to have sign Gregory (van der Wiel)," Barça manager Dean Bryant said. "He has international experience which is good even though he never played a single appearance for Milan in the last season. He will provide some competition with Davide Santon as a cover for Dani Alves in the right-back position."
