SMFA Cup, Group Stage Game 2 - Friday 24 Jul 2009

Chelsea 3 - 4 Santos

After a valiant display to try and gain three points which would not only boost morale but put them in good stead in the cup competition, Brazilian outfit Santos were the team on top and won the game 4-3 at Stamford Bridge, to send Chelsea to their third successive defeat. On the score sheet for Chelsea were Michael Manciennce scoring early in the first half, and Andriy Shevcenko scoring a goal in each half. It’s believed Selby will want Chelsea to field a stronger side in their next game to make sure the Blues have a chance of European Success this season.

League Match - Saturday 25 Jul 2009

West Ham 1 - 5 Chelsea

Chelsea after 3 unconvincing defeats in as many games needed a win, a win not only to boost morale but to keep them in a slight chance of title success. And Selby’s prayers must have helped as West Ham united were hit for 5, as Chelsea romped to an outstanding victory. In a wonderful team performance, Diego Forlan hit his four goals past Robert Green, with Drogba scoring the fifth and Chelsea absolutely dominated proceedings in this tie. Fantastic performance by Selby’s men and this places Chelsea 10th in Division 1 of the English League.

English Shield Round 3 Round 3 - Mon 27 Jul 2009

West Ham United 2 - 3 Chelsea

After Chelsea’s 5-1 domination over the Hammers, Chelsea kept to the same 3-5-2 formation and fielded a weaker side. West Ham fielded a much stronger side, but it had no impact on the games proceedings as Chelsea convincingly romped to a 3-2 victory. Chelsea dominated on the attacking front and looked convincing throughout. John Obi Mikel, Daniel Sturridge and Andriy Shevchenko delivered the goods and put Chelsea comfortably into the fourth round of the English Shield. David Di Michele and Dean Ashton were on the score sheet for West Ham.

Dan Griffin and Arsenal went into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw with the current champions of England, Manchester United, and also Arsenal had beaten Boca Juniors 1-0 who are also in group C, while Inter had lost their first game of the group stages 2-0 to New England Revolution.

The game started well for Arsenal as they went 1-0 up within 8 minutes when Croatian Striker Eduardo hammered a shot home from 23 yards, beating Julio Cesar by a country mile. 8 minutes later and the Gooners had capatalised on their lead as they took another step into the game by going 2-0 up, again Eduardo the goalscorer, as he followed up on the rebound when an Abou Diaby shot crashed off the bar in the 16th minute. Just before half time, tempers rose and a fight broke out between Fabregas and Vieira and other team members joined in to try and break it up, resulting in Eduardo and Zanetti being booked.

A minute into the second half and Vieira had shown what a player he was by rising above the first half incident and then hit a powerful shot into the top corner in off the post and out of Almunia's reach, Vieira's put Inter right back into this! 11 minutes from time and Inter were saved when Materazzi was allowed to score due to poor communication at the back of the Arsenal line up, Arsenal were surely robbed 2 points, but Inter will feel they deserve this point from their second half hard work.

Liverpool FC sent their fans home happy after a 5-1 demolishing of Birmingham City at St Andrews earlier this evening. The game didn't see a goal until the 54th minute when Afellay curled it around the keeper after good build up play. Birmingham then managed to grab a goal back when Christian Bermudez shot was deflected in the 58th minute. It didnt take long for Liverpool to take the lead again when an inch perfect cross from the wing was met by the towering Fernando Torres , who nodded home.

Then 8 minutes later striker Dirk Kuyt managed bundled it over the line after a scramble in the box to send liverpool 3-1 up. Defender Martin Skrtel then made it 4-1 to the reds after he vollyed into the back of the net after a long ball.

The goals didnt stop there as on the 82nd minute Dirk Kuyt slot the home after some neat footwork to grab his second of the game to make it 5-1.

Manager Rob was delighted after the match which sent out a real warning to the competiton. Next game for liverpool sees a visit from Arsenal to Anfield in which Rob is expected to field the same side after such a good win.

Starting XI: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel (MOM), Insua, Afellay, Mascherano, Gerrard ©, Riera, Kuyt, Torres

Hunt takes over at Liverpool!

English manager, Rhys Hunt has taken the helm at English giants, Liverpool FC. Hunt has taken over from another English manager in Rob Hardwick, who Hunt has said he admires very much and hopes Rob may one day be able to return to his post at Liverpool as Hunts assistant manager. Rhys Hunt was an obvious choice for the Liverpool board as he has had successful stints with Celtic, Bayern Munchen and other big clubs. Hunt won the quadrouple in his second season at Celtic, so Liverpool will be hoping for some of that managerial magic from the English gaffer.

Rhys Hunt spoke to SMTV in his first press conference since being appointed the Liverpool manager, he had this to say: "I'm very pleased to be here. Liverpool are a great club, and I can't wait to get straight into the action". He then spoke about his key players for the rest of the season and he had this to say: "Well obviously our main man and captain Steven Gerrard will be key this season along with Fernando Torres who in my opinion is the best striker in the world. I also think that Dirk Kuyt is a great player and will be a good player for us for the rest of the season".

Hunt has been chucked straight into the deep end in the Liverpool job, when he takes his first game in charge of Liverpool against Premiership League giants, Chelsea and their English manager, Adam Selby who Hunt says is a great manager and it should be a very good game and you wouldn't want to miss it. Hunt has basically a full strength team to pick from for the game with Chelsea other than Martin Srktel who is suspended. Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torrres and Javier Mascherano will all start for Hunts side tonight.

Torres (left) and Gerrard (right) will be the two big players for Liverpool for the remainder of the season

Well, It's week 27 in the league campaign so far, and the table is taking shape and is starting to split into the mini leagues of 4 and 5 as predicted by the EPL, But the most shocking is that Arsenal still remain top of the table after Dan Griffin had almost left them a few weeks ago, but he returned and found that they were top of the table and started to take more interest again. The next most shocking was that Spurs are still very close to the North Londoners in the table, and also Rob Hardwick had resigned from the Liverpool managers post, to be replaced by unknown manager Rhys Hunt.

Re: Gold Championship 62 - The Race For The EPL Title

Torres runs the show!

On the 7th October, Rhys Hunt's Liverpool lined up against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium. Liverpool earlier in the season won the other fixture between the two sides 2-0 and they were looking to repeat that result this time around in the return leg, and they did just that.

In the first half of the game, chances were few and far between, with nither side threatening enough to open the scoring, but the had a few half chances within the first 45 minutes with Wigans Ben Watson coming closest for them, and Spanish striker Fernando Torres came close on a number of occasions for Rhys Hunt's Liverpool.

Liverpool knew they had to break the dead-lock and on the 63rd minute Fernando Torres goes on a run and finishes very well. Liverpool bagged a quick second through an unlikely source in Argentine Javier Mascherano strikes the ball from 30-yards out, what a screamer. The next goal came from Liverpool's talismanic Spanish striker Fernando Torres when he nods home a whipped in corner to kill off the game and make it 3-0. Just moments later Fernando Torres bagged his hat-trick with a great strike to make it 4-0. At the full-time whistle the score was Wigan Athletic 0-4 Liverpool.
