Re: The Coca-Cola Championship 2009/10 Season

Barnsley F.C.

10_front_small.png3_1196909593.gif1_front_small.png

Last Season: 20th

Barnsley’s poor start to the season, where they only managed to win two of their first ten league fixtures seemed to set the tone for their 2008/09 campaign. In fact, the Tykes’ most notable movement last term came when Reuben Noble-Lazarus made history by becoming the Football League’s youngest ever player at the age of 15 years and 45 days. However, it was two big losses to the Barnsley squad which hurt them most. Brian Howard’s departure to Sheffield United in October left a gaping hole in Barnsley’s midfield, while Iain Hume’s serious injury sustained against Howard’s new side in November kept him out for the rest of the season. The Canadian striker had only been bought that summer for a seven-figure fee and his fractured skull meant the South Yorkshire outfit had to do without their star striker for the rest of the campaign. Barnsley struggled for form and consistency all season, as they managed consecutive victories on just two separate occasions. At times, it looked like they were to fall victim to the dreaded drop into League One, especially when they went on a winless streak of eight late-on in the year. However, a vital 2-1 win away to Plymouth on the last day of the season ensured their survival, for another season at least. At least victories, home and away, over bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday will have kept the fans happy.

Manager: Simon Davey

The 2009/10 season will mark Simon Davey’s third full season in charge of Barnsley, and his third in football, full stop. Davey, who entered into coaching at Preston North End where he was in charge of the youth academy, made the step up from Barnsley academy coach to caretaker manager in November of 2006 after the sacking of Andy Ritchie. After saving the Tykes from relegation that season, Ritchie went on to lead his side to famous FA Cup victories over Liverpool and Chelsea the following year, before they bowed out at the semi-final stage. However that season and the season just gone, he and Barnsley have struggled to avoid relegation battles and rid the side of their tag of being a fairly weak Championship outfit.

Captain: Stephen Foster

The signing of Stephen Foster in 2007 was one of the best in Barnsley’s recent history. Another to come off the conveyor-belt of great talent at Crewe Alexandra, Foster is entering his third season as a Tyke, and his second as club captain. Foster signed for the Railway Men at a young age and went on to make almost 250 appearances for Dario Gradi’s side. He was always higly rated and eventually made the move across the North West to Burnley. However, in his two seasons with the Clarets, the central defender struggled to make a great impact on the first XI for one reason or another. Barnsley made the move to put him back in the limelight and he didn’t disappoint as he swept Barnsley end of season awards, winning every gong going. Appointed captain at the beginning of last term, Foster continued his excellent form and was a rock in the defence all season, making 40 appearances in all competitions. His manager and his teammates will continue to expect him to lead his side by example for the forthcoming season.

Key Player: Jamal Campbell-Ryce

Barnsley’s diminutive winger, Jamal Campbell-Ryce is the most exciting player at Oakwell right now and is coming off the back of his most productive season of his career. Last term, Campbell-Ryce scored 9 goals in 39 league starts as he helped Barnsley steer clear of relegation. The Jamaican international seems to have found his feet in South Yorkshire after moving from club to club over the last six years or so. During that time, he has spent permanent spells at Rotherham, Charlton and Southend, while he has endured a multitude of loan spells at the likes of Chesterfield, Leyton Orient, Colchester and MK Dons. However, since Barnsley signed the winger in August of 2007, Campbell-Ryce has settled down and won over the Oakwell crowds with a series of scintillating performances. A regular in the Jamaican national squad, Barnsley will be looking for their wing-man to continue delivering the goods if they are hoping for a successful season.

Rising Star: Reuben Noble-Nazarus

Barnsley caused quite a stir last season when young Reuben Noble-Lazarus became the youngest ever player to make a Football League appearance just weeks after his 15th birthday. The youngster made two substitute appearances last season, although there has been little to suggest that the player is a great talent as of this moment in time. Some, including me, remain sceptical that the move to introduce Noble-Lazarus on the scene was little more than a publicity stunt to create a buzz. If this is the case, then it worked as the newspapers continued to formulate rumours that top EPL clubs were preparing bids up to around £2m. Nevertheless, Reuben is tall for his age (5’11” – sure to get taller), very fast and has plenty of time to develop. It remains to be seen whether or not his cameo appearances last season will materialise into anything more for the upcoming campaign. We shall await with interest.

Big Addition: Onome Sodje

Not the biggest of additions, but Barnsley have made few key transfers this off-season. If they sign somebody of more importance, this section may be subject to change! This summer, Barnsley moved to acquire the services of Onome Sodje, another from the large sporting Sodje family. Sodje arrives from York City, where he spent the past two seasons scoring 21 goals over the course of that period. He began his career at Charlton, before joining Gravesend. In the 2006/07 season, Sodje began to make a name for himself when he scored 9 goals at the tender age of 18. York saw enough in him to prize him away from Gravesend and he has continued to impress at non-league level. His move to Barnsley is a large jump in quality, but I reckon we may be seeing a bit from the latest Sodje in the coming campaign. Here’s what boss Simon Davey had to say of the young striker following his transfer:

“Onome is one for the future and a player we are looking forward to working with having here at Oakwell. He is lightning quick with an eye for goal, a lot of potential and someone we feel can improve and develop here at Oakwell.”

Big Loss: Strength in depth?

At the time of writing, Barnsley haven’t really lost anyone who you’d say would be a dramatic loss to the squad. Granted, Heinz Muller was a decent ‘keeper, but they received a good fee for the player and they have a better ‘keeper in the ranks already in Luke Steele. Diego Leon and Dennis Souza were half-decent players, but I think the Tykes can get by without them. There’s nobody in that list below who shouts out and makes you think, “oh yeh. They’re gonna miss him.” The only thing I would be a little bit worried about if I were a Barnsley fan is the strength in depth. Losing all those players could have a detrimental effect on the squad as the season wears on as Barnsley don’t possess the biggest squad in the world. Hopefully, they can pick up two or three players, either permanently or on loan, before the transfer window shuts.

Transfers in: Andy Gray (Charlton - Undisclosed), Adam Hammill (Liverpool - Undisclosed), O'Neil Thompson (Notodden FK - Undisclosed), Onome Sodje (York City – Free), David Preece (OB – Free), Emil Hallfredsson (Reggina - Season-Long Loan)

Transfers out: Heinz Muller (HSV Mainz 05 - £600,000), Dennis Souza (Al Sailiya [Qatar] - Free), Diego Leon (Las Palmas - Free), Marciano Van Homoet (Willem II - Free), Kyle Letheren (Plymouth - Free)

2009/10 Prediction: Relegation Strugglers.

It’s tough for Barnsley with them being a small club with limited resources and it’s going to be important for the Barnsley board to be realistic, and not too optimistic. In all reality, staying up in this division would represent a notable achievement as, by looking at their squad, the depth of talent is extremely thin. As it will be for all the small teams, it will be vital for Barnsley to establish something of a fortress at Oakwell. They must keep it tight at home and snatch tight wins whenever possible as every point will be key for them. Away from home, I can’t see them doing a lot, so picking up as many draws as possible, along with the odd win will help their cause. But I’m afraid it shall be a long old season for the Tykes and I make them one of my favourites for the drop.

Re: The Coca-Cola Championship 2009/10 Season

Blackpool F.C.

7_front_small.png6_1190596348.gif12_front_small.png

Last Season: 16th

Blackpool built on their survival from the previous campaign by finishing a credible 16th last term. Although that may seem to be rather slow progress, for a club of Blackpool’s size and financial standing, becoming a regular fixture in the second tier of English football is very respectable. Last season, Blackpool’s inability to score goals hurt them most, as only five other sides in the division scored less than they did. In fact, they only managed to notch more than two goals in a game on two occasions and their top scorer isn’t even a Blackpool player - D.J. Campbell, on loan from Leicester, scored 9 goals after making a January move. Managerial uncertaincy clouded over the Seasiders’ campaign all season, after Simon Grayson, a popular and promising, young manager jumped ship to manage League One side Leeds United. Tony Parkes filled the void in a caretaker manager role until the end of the season, and he successfully guided the side to safety.

Manager: Ian Holloway

Blackpool finally filled the void left by Simon Grayson at the end of the season by confirming the appointment of Ian Holloway as manager on a one-year contract in May. Holloway, reknowned for being one of the most bright and entertaining managers in the game today, has experienced an up-and-down managerial career to say the least. His first managerial role came as player-manager of Bristol Rovers, his hometown team and one which he appeared for over 400 times as a player. Holloway managed the Pirates for five seasons, leading them to a play-off semi-final defeat on one occasion. QPR appointed Holloway as the man to try and save them from relegation to Division Two (now League One) in February 2001, although he was unable to do so. After an acclimatisation period, QPR returned to the second tier at the third time of asking when they finished second behind Plymouth Argyle in the 2003/04 season. Holloway did well to make sure QPR remained around mid-table for the first couple of seasons before he was suspended by the club amid rumours linking Holloway to Leicester City. However, he did not join Leicester, at least not immediately. After an ill-fated stint at Plymouth Argyle, Leicester finally got their man in November of 2007, to the disgust of Plymouth fans. It turned out to be a bad appointment though, as he won just 9 of 32 games as the Foxes boss and they were relegated from the Championship. As a result, Holloway spent a year away from the managerial scene, until agreeing to become Blackpool boss this year.

Captain: Jason Euell

Key Player: David Vaughan

Rising Star: Billy Clarke

Big Addition: Charlie Adam

Big Loss: Shaun Barker

Transfers in: Charlie Adam (Rangers - £500,000), Neil Eardley (Oldham - Undisclosed), Jason Euell (Charlton – Free), Billy Clarke (Ipswich – Free), Hameur Bouazza (Sivasspor - Free), Mark Hudson (Rotherham - Free), Adam Nowland (Notts County - Free), Ishmel Demontagnac (Unnatached - Free)

Transfers out: Shaun Barker (Derby - £1m), David Fox (Colchester - Free), Stuart Green (Wycombe – Free), Marlon Broomes, Francesco Carratta, Claus Jorgensen, Jermaine Wright, Ashton Bayliss, Matt Kay (All Released)

2009/10 Prediction: Relegation Strugglers

Ian Holloway faces a big task with the Seasiders as he tries to rebuild his image as a promising, young manager – something which may have been tarnished by some of his recent ventures. Blackpool have a small squad, so keeping injuries to a minimum could be influential over the course of their season. The loss of captain Shaun Barker will hurt them, and you have to wonder where the goals will come from up front. If they can get several of players to chip in with 5-8 goals, then they might have enough in the tank to stay away from danger, but I fear that they might be in thick of it for a fair portion of the campaign.

Re: The Coca-Cola Championship 2009/10 Season

Bristol City F.C.

10_front_small.png13_1202400808.gif1_front_small.png

Last Season: 10th

After a stunning introduction to Championship football the previous season, where Bristol City stunned many by not only registering a fourth-placed finish, but also narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League, Gary Johnson’s side’s exploits were more modest this campaign. A slow start to the season contributed to this, and it was only when they managed a good run of results in early 2009 when they finally hit their stride. Summer signing, Nicky Maynard, struggled to justify his hefty price tag early into the season, but grew in confidence as the season wore on as he and fellow striker Dele Adebola combined to net 21 goals for the Robins. City’s greatest strength last term was their canny knack of being tough to beat at Ashton Gate. They were only beaten on three occasions on home soil, although a huge 13 draws meant a lot of dropped points. A half-decent record on the road, despite a lack of goals, kept them in the play-off picture for a while, but they ultimately fell short. Nevertheless, City fans should recognise that this is not a failure in comparison to the previous season, as becoming a tough Championship outfit for several consecutive seasons is often wise before that assault on the top flight.

Manager: Gary Johnson

Gary Johnson is widely respected as one of the best managers outside of the Premiership. He has built himself a sterling reputation for himself over the years, particularly for his time at Yeovil Town. Johnson’s first management job was at Newmarket Town, although he was persuaded to join Cambridge United in the late ‘80’s, when they were still in the football league. Although initially a member of the backroom staff, Johnson took over the reigns of the club in 1993, and was manger for two years before being sacked. The Londoner spent another couple of years as manager of Kettering Town before being fired again, and at this point, Johnson decided to take a step back and help out at Watford as the director of their youth academy. In a rather bizarre move, Latvia moved to appoint Johnson as the National Team’s new head coach and it was he who famously recommended Marian Pahars to Dave Jones at Southampton, who went on to become a top Premiership striker for a short while. After resigning as Latvian boss, Johson joined Yeovil where he began to accumulate accolades and trophies. FA Trophy winners, Conference Play-off winners and Division Three Champions were soon to be on his resume, as Johnson transformed the Glovers from non-league giant-killers, into Football League pretenders. The 53-year-old joined Bristol City in 2005, early into the 2005/06 season. After a ninth-placed finish in his opening season, Johnson led the Robins to promotion to the Championship at the second attempt after they finished second behind Shorpe United. Since then, City have become a force to be reckoned with in the second tier of English football, and Johnson’s side were narrowly beaten to promotion by Hull City, following a 1-0 defeat in the 2007/08 Play-off Final.

Captain: Louis Carey

Key Player: Nicky Maynard

Rising Star: Andre Blackman

Big Addition: Paul Hartley

Big Loss: Michael McIndoe

Transfers in: David Clarkson (Motherwell – Undisclosed), Dean Gerken (Colchester – Undisclosed), Danny Haynes (Ipswich – Undisclosed), Paul Hartley (Celtic – Free), Andre Blackman (Portsmouth – Free), Evander Sno (Ajax - Season-Long Loan), Alvaro Saborio (FC Sion - Season-Long Loan), Andrius Velicka (Rangers - Season-Long Loan)

Transfers out: Michael McIndoe (Coventry - Undisclosed), Dele Adebola (Notts Forest – Free), Scott Murray (Yeovil – Free), Jennison Myrie-Williams (Dundee United – Free), Chris Weale (Leicester - Free), Izzy Iriekpen (Hamilton - Free), Peter Styvar (Xanthi – Loan), James Wilson (Brentford - Loan), Marlon Jackson (Hereford - Loan), Tristan Plummer (Hereford - Loan), Lee Trundle (Swansea - Loan), David Noble (Released)

2009/10 Prediction: Play-Off Contenders.

In Gary Johnson, Bristol City have themselves one of the best managers in the division and he has steadily built a very strong squad down at Ashton Gate. One thing you can say about the Robins is that they have goals in them. Nicky Maynard will guarantee you 15 goals in a season and they have made a couple of good acquisitions up front in Danny Haynes and David Clarkson. Paul Hartley brings some extra quality and experience in midfield and a solid defence should keep the southern outfit in the mix. They shall be a test for any side this season, and don’t be surprised in the slightest to see City occupying one of the play-off places once again come May.

Re: The Coca-Cola Championship 2009/10 Season

Cardiff City F.C.

2_front_small.png18_1216254515.jpg67_front_small.png

Last Season: 7th

Cardiff were cruelly denied a place in the play-offs on the final day of last season, thanks to a combination of results conspiring against them, and a poor run of form. Jermaine Johnson’s goal at Hillsborough in May put the Bluebirds out of the play-off picture and meant that Burnley and Preston both crept in, with the latter squeezing home on goals scored alone. However, many of the Welsh side’s fans may say that they shot themselves in the foot, after they let a strong position go, going into the last few games of the season. In fact, Cardiff were well in contention for automatic promotion before the collapse four games prior to the end of the season, which included a demoralising 6-0 thrashing, ironically, against Preston. Still, there were many positives to take from the campaign, despite the sorry end. Ross McCormack, a summer signing from Motherwell netted a fantastic 21 goals which left many clubs vying for his signature and only champions, Wolves, scored more than the Welsh side in the whole league. In fact, Cardiff had a pretty strong squad in general last term, which showed as they occupied a top 6 position for much of the campaign. One downside, however, was Cardiff’s often leaky defence – they conceded the most goals in the top-half of the league with 60 goals.

Manager: Dave Jones

Liverpudlian boss Dave Jones enters his fifth season in charge of Cardiff City aiming to go one step further than previous years, and take the Welsh side into the Premiership. Jones is a succesful manager, going right back to his first job as manager of Stockport County. He earned promotion to Division One (now the Championship) with the Greater Manchester outfit, and took the side to the Coca-Cola League Cup semi-finals. His success there prompted Premier League side Southampton to acquire his services. Despite reasonable achievements there, his reputation was soured when he was arrested on the charge of child abuse, although this was later thrown out in court. Nevertheless, it affected his career at the Hampshire club, and he eventually left when the Saints paid off the remainder of his contract. After a while away from the football scene, Jones returned with Wolves, with whom he earned promotion to the Premier League during the 2002/03 campaign. However, it proved to be a short stint at the top level, and they returned to second tier action immediately. An aging Wolves side struggled to acclimatise, and Jones was sacked in November. Since joining Cardiff, he has stabalised a club that had previously been in financial uncertainty and has gradually put together a squad which is consistently capable of mounting a top 6 challenge. His highlight, obviously, came when he led the Welsh outfit to the FA Cup final, where they lost narrowly to Portsmouth in 2008.

Captain: Mark Hudson

Key Player: Joe Ledley

Rising Star: Darcy Blake

Big Addition: Michael Chopra

Big Loss: Roger Johnson

Transfers in: Michael Chopra (Sunderland - £4m), Mark Hudson (Charlton - £1.075m), Anthony Gerrard (Walsall – Undisclosed), David Marshall (Norwich - Undisclosed), Paul Quinn (Motherwell – Undisclosed), Kelvin Etuhu (Man City - Loan)

Transfers out: Roger Johnson (Birmingham City - £5m), Paul Parry (Preston - Undisclosed), Darren Purse (Sheff Weds – Free), Darren Dennehy (Hereford - 6-Month Loan), Jonathan Brown (Released)

2009/10 Prediction: Title Challengers.

Dave Jones has himself a very strong squad in South Wales, but there hopes could hinge on whether or not they can keep hold of star players Joe Ledley and Ross McCormack. Even if McCormack were to go, Michael Chopra is an absolute goal machine at this level and will guarantee enough goals to propel the Bluebirds into the top half. On top of that, they have a very strong midfield with plenty of creativity to provide. In defence, they have lost a key player in Roger Johnson, but Mark Hudson is a good replacement in an already competent backline. Cardiff have more than enough about them to make the play-offs, but I’d tip them to be good outside bets for automatic promotion.

Re: The Coca-Cola Championship 2009/10 Season

Coventry City F.C.

306_front_small.png25_1217871592.jpg270_front_small.png

Last Season: 17th

The Sky Blues endured an up-and-down campaign which ended poorly as they went on a winless run of eight games to end the season. Despite being safe from the drop, City fans will be sure to be unhappy by the poor run of results that brought an end to the term. One major positive point from the 2008/09 season, however, was the acquisition of Keiran Westwood, an Irish goalkeeper from Carlisle. Westwood already had a decent reputaion from his time in League One, but that soared after his move to Coventry as he established himself as one of the top ‘keepers outside of the top flight. On the flip-side though, start summer signings, Clinton Morrison and Freddie Eastwood endured hit-and-miss seasons. Eastwood never found his shooting boots all term, while Clinton’s 12 goals helped the cause tremendously. Goals came at a premium, however, as Coventry boasted one of the worst goalscoring records in the league. A good FA Cup run to the Quarter-Finals where they suffered defeat to eventual champions, Chelsea, will have pleased the fans and bank balance. However, in general, City fans will definitely feel that there is room for improvement for a side they may feel should be competing at the upper echelons of the division.

Manager: Chris Coleman

Young Welsh manager, Chris Coleman was soon to realise that Championship football is tough to acclimatise to in his first season in charge at the Midlands club. After a playing career that spanned almost 500 games, Coleman was thrusted into the managerial limelight after the departure of Jean Tigana in April 2003. The ex-Wales international steered the club away from relegation in a caretaker-role, and was appointed in a permanent position in the summer. As a young manager, Coleman did well to keep Fulham in the league for several seasons, despite the loss of key individuals including Edwin Van Der Sar, Steed Malbranque and Louis Saha. But, when the club went on a particularly poor run, late into the 2006/07 season, Mohammad Al Fayed informed Coleman that his services were no longer required. Coleman then made a shock switch to Spanish Segunda side Real Sociedad, where he led the club to 5th spot in the table up until January, when re resigned due to newly-elected President, Inaki Badiola’s involvement at the club. Just a month later, Coventry’s chairman, Ray Ranson, moved to appoint Coleman as manager folowing the dismissal of Iain Dowie. Coleman has slowly but surely steadied the ship at the fallen Premier League giants, but he will be expected to push on this season and move the side further up the table.

Captain: Stephen Wright

Wright has recently been appointed the new captain of Coventry City following the departure of fellow defender Scott Dann to Premier League newcomers, Birmingham City. Of the appointment, manager Chris Coleman had this to say:

“Stephen is an experienced professional and when he featured last year, we enjoyed our most successful spells. He is a level-headed individual, calm, solid defender who a lot of the younger lads can look up to and learn from. He is a leader with or without the armband, and I’m sure he will do extremely well for the team.”

Rather a veteran today, Wright began his career at his hometown club, Liverpool, although he appeared on just 14 occasions for the EPL giants in his five years with the club. Sunderland came in and rescued his career and Wright was part of the club that suffered relegation from the top division with a then record-low 19 points, although he also helped the side to win promotion back to the Premiership two years later. However, a series of injuries ruined the remainder of his Sudnerland career and he sought a move elsewhere following his release. Coventry picked him up in the summer of 2008 and he made 22 starts for the club last season.

Key Player: Keiran Westwood

As touched upon earlier, Keiran Westwood was one of the revelations of, not only Coventry City’s season, but the Championship season, last term. The Manchester-born stopper began his career at hometown club Manchester City, although he was released early into his career with him being well down the pecking order. He went on to join Carlisle United, where he was again restricted to first team opportunites with him standing behind Matt Glennon for the number one jersey. However, following Glennon’s departure and new signing, Anthony Williams’ poor form, Westwood was finally given his chance. He started 35 league games as Carlisle marched towards the League Two title, and he kept the position as Carlisle reached the League One Play-Off semi-finals, where they lost to Leeds United. These sterling performances earned Westwood a place in the League One PFA Team Of The Season, and a rumoured initial fee of £500,000 transfer to Coventry, where he continued to win over more pundits. Westwood enjoyed another successful season and was again awarded a place in the PFA Team Of The Season for the Championship. He has been the subject of rumoured £4m bids from various EPL sides and he has recently made his debut for the Republic of Ireland (who he qualifies for through his grandmother) in a friendly against Nigeria.

Rising Star: Aron Gunnarson

Highly-rated youngster Aron Gunnarson joined Coventry last summer after failing to force his way into the AZ Alkmaar setup. However, the move has done wonders for his career as he has become one of the top talents currently plying their trade in the Championship. The move has also cemented Gunnarson’s place in the Iceland national team, and he already has 11 caps to his name by the age of 20. Last season, he was a regular in the Sky Blues midfield and picked up two club Player of the Season Awards at the end of the campaign. He made 45 starts in total, scoring twice, including a memorable, long-range volley in an FA Cup game against Blackburn. Top clubs are already keeping an eye on the talented Icelander, but manager Chris Coleman will be keen to keep one of the best talents that Coventry have had in years.

Big Addition: Michael McIndoe

Big Loss: Scott Dann

Scott Dann’s multi-million pound transfer to Birmingham will prove a big loss to the Sky Blues backline, although it will mark a large profit for a player who spent just one full season at the Ricoh Arena. Dann started his career at Walsall and was part of the side that won promotion to League One as champions. Dann won a lot of plaudits for his effort in this campaign and Walsall rewarded him with a contract extension to ward off interest from other clubs. However, as Dann continued to impress for the Saddlers, an inevitable move in January 2008 materailised as Coventry picked the centre-back up for an undisclosed fee. Dann helped the side avoid relegation and was appointed the side’s captain for the following season at the tender age of 21. He also made his debut for the England Under-21’s in this time as his career really began to flourish. As captain last season, he made 34 appearances in all competitions and did enough to convince Birmingham boss Alex McCleish to splash out a reported £3.5m on the player, which the chance to rise to £4m with performance based add-ons.

Transfers in: Michael McIndoe (Bristol City - Undisclosed), Sammy Clingan (Norwich - Undisclosed), Patrick Van Aanholt (Chelsea - Four-Month Loan)

Transfers out: Danny Fox (Celtic - Undisclosed), Scott Dann (Birmingham City - Undisclosed), Robbie Simpson (Huddersfield – Undisclosed), Sean Fraser (Falkirk – Free), Andy Marshall (Aston Villa - Free), Leon McKenzie (Charlton - Free), Donovan Simmonds (Floriana - Free), Kevin Thornton (Mutual Termination), Michael Doyle (Leeds - Season-Long Loan), Michael Mifsud, Guillaume Beuzelin, Bradley Jones, Chris Hollist (All Released)

2009/10 Prediction: Bottom Half, But Safe

On paper, Coventry have themselves a very good looking first team. They have, arguably, one of the best looking midfields in the league, they have a prolific forward in Clinton Morrison and the greatest goalkeeper outside the top flight. However, dig a little deeper, and there is little depth to the squad and they shall need a few of their promising youngsters to step up to the plate when injuries set in. I also have worries about their defence after the big losses of Scott Dann and Danny Fox and, while they will be a test for all top sides with a full strength team, I fear that they will get lost in the shuffle and mid-table may be the best they can hope for. Nevertheless, this is not necessarily a bad thing as Chris Coleman needs time to build a suitably strong enough squad before challenging for promotion.

Re: The Coca-Cola Championship 2009/10 Season

Crystal Palace F.C.

49_front_small.png27_1231880033.jpg12_front_small.png

Last Season: 15th

Manager: Neil Warnock

Captain: Shaun Derry

Shaun Derry is in the middle of his second spell at Selhurst Park after returning to the club in 2008 following a loan spell from Leeds. Now a veteran at the age of 31, Derry has enjoyed spells at various sides in his carrer, although it was at Notts County where he first made a name for himself. He made his debut for the East Midlands outfit way back in the 1995/96 campaign and he went on to make 94 appearances for the side, becoming a regular for the following two seasons. Sheffield United splashed out £750,000 to bring the tough-tackling, central midfielder to Bramall Lane and a subsequent move to Portsmouth eventually brought him the captain's armband at the south coast outfit. However, when Harry Redknapp arrived on the scene, he was one of many to feel the wrath of Redknapp's regime and was deemed surplus to requirements. He joined Palace for the first time in 2002 and was part of the side that won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs. But Derry was rarely to be used in the Eagles solitary season in the top flight and he was shipped off to Leeds United for an undisclosed fee. Derry impressed for Leeds but was injured for the second half of the 2006/07 campaign and could only watch as Leeds were relegated to the third tier of English football. Famously, after a defeat to Crystal Palace, then manager Dennis Wise revealed that a Leeds player, known as "the mole", had provided the Leeds team to face Palace to the opposition backroom staff pre-match and Wise vowed that that player would never play for the club again. Shaun Derry never played for the side again; coincidence? I think not. He made a loan spell at Selhurst Park permanent in the 2007/08 season as he formed an impressive midfield partnership with Ben Watson, before the latter moved to Wigan Athletic. Last season, he was named captain following Mark Hudson's move to Charlton Athletic.

Key Player: Patrick McCarthy

With a side littered with exciting, young talents, the experience of centre-back Patrick McCarthy will be vital to Crystal Palace's success this season. He and other experienced members, like captain Shaun Derry, will need to be at their best to help organise and encourage the younger members of the squad. McCarthy is another who came through the ranks at Manchester City, although he never got the chance in the first XI. After loan spells with both Boston United and Notts County, Leicester City payed £100,000 for his services where he went on to become a fans favourite due to his tough tackling style of play, as well as being made club captain. He made over 80 appearances for the Foxes, scoring on four occasions before making the switch to Charlton Athletic in a £650,000 deal. He spent only one season with the Addicks as they moved for Palace defender Mark Hudson, prompting Neil Warnock to bring McCarthy in the opposite direction. Despite a long, shoulder injury, McCarthy did well in his first season with the Eagles and will be the key member in their backline again this campaign.

Rising Star: Nathaniel Clyne

With so many promising players coming through at Selhurst Park, it's tough to single out one as the likes of Victor Moses and Sean Scannell are precocious talents as well. But it is full-back Nathaniel Clyne who perhaps made the greatest impression in his debut season with the club. After coming through the club's youth system, he made his debut in October of last season against Barnsley. Not only did he do enough to keep his place in the side, he earned himself a three-year contract with the club not too long afterwards. He made 28 starts in total last season and impressed many with pace and his willingness to get forward to help in attack. At the end of the campaign, he was named Young Player of the Year in the club's end of season awards.

Big Addition: Darren Ambrose

Another big name who was released at the end of last season, Darren Ambrose is a player with great pedigree and reputation. Neil Warnock did well to acquire his services after Ambrose's former club were relegated from the Championship last season. Ambrose started his career with Ipswich Town and made his debut during the season they were relegated from the Premiership. An impressive showing the following campaign led Newcastle to take advantage of Ipswich's poor financial state by snatching Ambrose for a snip at £1m. He started well at Tyneside, but fell out of favour under new manager Graeme Souness and he ultimately moved to Charlton upon his frustration of his lack of first-team involvement. In a £1.5m deal, Ambrose scored sixteen goals in the next three seasons, but he was forced to move to Ipswich on loan due to Charlton's poor financial standing. Ipswich wanted to make the move permanent, but that fell through and Warnock moved quickly to get Ambrose to sign a pre-contract agreement in early 2009. The winger will bring some much needed width and trickery into the Palace midfield, and should be a great addition to the squad.

Big Loss: Carl Fletcher

There weren't too many big losses from the Palace squad this summer, but the loss of midfielder Carl Fletcher will be felt somewhat, as he has the experience to help the progress of his young teammates. Fletcher began his career at Bournemouth where he captained the side to a 5-2 Division Three Paly-Off Final victory, with Fletcher himself bagging two of the goals. He made over 200 appearances for the South Coast outfit before West Ham payed £275,000 for his services in 2004. He was part of the squad that won promotion to the EPL via the play-offs once more and got himself Premier League experience for the first time in his career as a result. Due to a suspension to Hayden Mullins, Fletcher played in West Ham's cruel FA Cup final defeat to Liverpool following Steven Gerrard's dramatic late equaliser. However, that was his last game for the Hammers as he joined Palace in the summer where he was appointed captain. However, once Neil Warnock took over as manager, Fletcher's first-team involvement reduced. After loan spells with Nottingham Forest and Plymouth, the Wales International agreed to a switch to the Pilgrims this summer.

Transfers in: Stern John (Southampton - Free), Darren Ambrose (Charlton – Free), Claude Davis (Derby - Free), Ryan Smith (Southampton - Free), Freddie Sears (West Ham United – Season-Long Loan)

Transfers out: Rhoys Wiggins (Norwich – Undisclosed), Jerson Dos Santos (Grays – Free), Carl Fletcher (Plymouth - Free), Scott Flinders (Hartlepool – Free), James Scowcroft (Leyton Orient – Free), John Oster (Doncaster - Free), Keiron Djilali (Crawley - Loan)

2009/10 Prediction: Mid-Table Anonymity

Palace have enough quality in their side to steer well clear of the relegation zoen, but I doubt that they have what it takes to mount a serious challenge on the play-offs. Under the shrewd guidance of Neil Warnock, they will win a lot of games they perhaps may not deserve and with the amount of talented youngsters coming through right now, the future certainly looks bright. They have a good blend of youth and experience and if the likes of Freddie Sears and Stern John can chip in with 10-12 goals each, they could very well find themselves on the fringes on the play-offs. However, this is likely to be a season too soon before Palace really stake a claim for promotion.

Re: The Coca-Cola Championship 2009/10 Season

Derby County F.C.

103_front_small.png29_1199919859.gif6_front_small.png

Last Season: 18th

Manager: Nigel Clough

Captain: Paul Connolly

Paul Connolly has held the captain's armband for the Rams since early on last season. He was handed the honour in a Carling Cup fixture following a summer move from Plymouth Argyle. It was here where the full-back has plyed his trade for his whole career, making his debut for the Pilgrims in May 2001 when the Green Army were still languishing in Division 3 (now League 2). Under the guidance of influential manager Paul Sturrock and with Connolly as an ever present in the Plymouth side, the team progressed through the leagues winning both the third and fourth tier titles in double-quick time. In the Championship, Connolly helped Plymouth acclimitise to their new surroundings before joining Derby on a free transfer after his contract ran out. He began his time behind Tyrone Mears in the pecking order, but a move to Marseille propelled Connolly into the first XI, where he hasn't looked back since. He netted his first Derby goal in April (only the second of his career) and made his 200th career appearance late on last season.

Key Player: Kris Commons

Now a Scotland International, Kris Commons is slowly building himself a reputation as one of the best players outside of the top division. Commons started his career at Stoke City, making his debut as a 17-year-old in 2001. But his time with the Potters was disrupted by a serious ACL injury, although he returned to the team to make over 40 appearances for the club. He did enough for Nottingham forest to be convinced by his promise and they brought him to the City Ground for £300,000. It was here where Commons began to make a name for himself, making over 130 appearances for the Reds, scoring an impressive 38 goals from midfield. He was part of the Forest side that won promotion back to the Championship during the 2007/08 campaign and Commons was named in the League One Team Of The Year. However, his contract was up and he decided to jump ship to Forest's bitter rivals, Derby County amid the interest of several clubs. Last season, Commons impressed many, particularly on the big stage when he netted a fantastic winner in Derby's win over Man Utd in a Carling Cup Semi-Final, First Leg. After qualifying through his grandparents, he was called up to the Scotland squad for the first time last year, making his debut in the friendly against Northern Ireland.

Rising Star: Miles Addison

Miles Vivien Esifi Addison (I'm sorry, but I just couldn't ignore those middle names! :P) is a talented young defender who has come through the youth system at Pride Park. He made his debut late into the 2005/06 season as a fresh-face 17-year-old and, although he kept his place in the side for the following fixture, he was pushed back into the academy side for the forseeable future. Nevertheless, Addison's promising displays had got Derby fans hopeful that they had a talent on their hands and they weren't to be disappointed. Although he had to wait over two years for his next appearance, he became a regular in the side last season. He even impressed in central midfield, unexpectantly, after impressing coaches when playing there in training. He went on to make 36 starts that term and was named Young Player of the Year in the Club's end of season awards. He even netted his first senior goal against Sheffield Wednesday, and netted a second against Man Utd in the FA Cup.

Big Addition: Lee Croft

Derby nabbed themselves one of the best free agents on the market this summer by acquiring Lee Croft from relegated Norwich City. Croft is another to come through the predigious youth system at Man City and he was part of the youth side that reached the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup in 2003. Croft made several appearances for the first XI at Eastlands, but they were mainly as a substitute and fairly infrequent. He made the switch to Carrow Road in the summer of 2006 for a fee of £600,000. Croft made 131 appearances for the Canaries and established himself as a real fan favourite. He was one of the few bright sparks in the side that got relegated last season and he was named Player of the Year in Norwich's end of season awards. He was always too good a player to play in the third tier of English football, and with his contract up, Derby made the move to bring the wideman to Pride Park.

Big Loss: Liam Dickinson

Many might not agree, while most will probably ask, "Liam who?". Liam Dickinson is a precocious young talent who was signed by Paul Jewell and the beginning of the 2008/09 season. He rose to prominence with Stockport County and was part of the side that won promotion to League One via the play-offs in 2008. Dickinson was a key member of that side and impressed many with his pace, power and finishing abilities. One of his big strengths is his ability to hold off opposition defenders, even if they are larger than himself, and to often win free-kicks for his troubles. In short, he's a hell of a handful. After that campaign, when he scored a terrific 21 goals to round of a spell at the club where he scored 33 goals in 94 games, Paul Jewell brought him to Pride Park for a fee of around £750,000. However, due to the large squad that the Rams possessed, Dickinson was never given a chance and was shipped out on loan, both under Jewell and new manager Nigel Clough. After scoring frequently for Blackpool and Huddersfield, it was only a matter of time before a club bidded for his services, and Brighton were the ones who got him for an undisclosed fee this summer. Derby fans may never know it, but they lost themselves a hell of a talent who never got a chance to shine in front of the Pride Park faithful.

Transfers in: Shaun Barker (Blackpool - £1m), Jake Buxton (Burton – Undisclosed), Dean Moxey (Exeter – Undisclosed), Ben Pringle (Ilkeston - Undisclosed), Medi Abalimba (Southend - Undisclosed), Lee Croft (Norwich City – Free), Jake Livermore (Tottenham - Loan)

Transfers out: Tyrone Mears (Burnley – Undisclosed), Emmanuel Villa (Cruz Azul – Undisclosed), Liam Dickinson (Brighton – Undisclosed), Andy Todd (Perth - Free), Mile Sterjovski (Perth – Free), Lewis Price (Brentford – Season-Long Loan), Luke Varney (Sheffield Wednesday - Loan), Paris Simmons (Released)

2009/10 Prediction: Mid-Table Anonymity

There is no doubt about it that Derby have got themselves a good young manager in Nigel Clough. However, it is important that he is given time to show what he can do, just like he got at Burton Albion. With the history of the club and his father, I would imagine that he would be given more of a chance than most. For this season, Derby, on their day, have enough talent in their squad to challenge the best in the league and possibly even enough to propel themselves towards the play-off region. However, the Rams are sort of in a transitional period and Clough will want to steady the ship for a while before making that assault on the Premier League. He will want to put his own stamp on the side by getting rid of any unwanted dead wood (Derby have a large squad) and bringing in the players he wants to take to the elite level. With this in mind, I reckon Derby will pose a threat to most sides this season, but ultimately get lost in the shuffle and finish around mid-table.

Re: The Coca-Cola Championship 2009/10 Season

Doncaster Rovers F.C.

25_front_small.png30_1201524708.gif1_front_small.png

Last Season: 14th

Manager: Sean O’Driscoll

Captain: Brian Stock

Key Player: Martin Woods

Rising Star: Sam Hird

Big Addition: Billy Sharp

Big Loss: Richie Wellens

Transfers in: Byron Webster (FK Siad Most - Undisclosed), Quinton Fortune (Tubize - Free), Mustapha Dumbuya (Grays Athletic - Free), John Oster (Crystal Palace - Free), Jason Shackell (Wolves - Loan)

Transfers out: Richie Wellens (Leicester – £1.2m), Matt Mills (Reading - Undisclosed), Gordon Greer (Swindon – Free), Jason Price (Millwall – Free), Gareth Taylor (Wrexham – Free), Darren Byfield (Walsall - Free), Tomi Ameobi (Released)

2009/10 Prediction: Bottom Half, But Safe

Possibly one of the most attractive to watch sides in the division, Sean O’Driscoll has got his side playing some beautiful football. The only problem for them is that they lack a goalscorer, and at the level, it is vital to have somebody who you can rely on to score regularly if you want to be successful. Defensively, Rovers are not the strongest, and the loss of Matthew Mills will be felt while, even more so, Richie Wellens’ departure will hinder their progress. Doncaster will stay up comfortably, and shall test some of the big guns very much so, but I reckon they shall be set for a similar sort of season to the last one; one of consolidation, rather than progression, but that’s nothing to be ashamed of for a club of Doncaster’s size.
