Harvey 3,234
Re: English Championship 3951 - Transfer/Gossip thread Football fans all over the country are eagerly anticipating the opening day of the Coca Cola Championship season. We take a look at the opening fixtures: Part 1 Swansea City vs Crystal Palace After losing manager Roberto Martinez, Swansea have appointed Romano Valente as their new manager. He will be looking to get off to a good start against Crystal Palace who had a disappointing campaign in 08/09. The Liberty Stadium was somewhat of a fortress for Swansea last year, and Jason Scotland will be key to their success this season. (I checked, he's still there despite moving to Wigan in reality.) Sheffield Wed vs Bristol City Bristol City failed to impress last season, after reaching the Play off finals in 2008. They finished 10th in the final league table, just two places above Sheffield Wednesday who they play on Saturday. Both clubs will be looking to make a good start to this campaign. West Brom vs Ipswich Town After a disappointing season in the Premier League, West Brom will be looking to maintain their reputation of playing good football in the Championship this season. Ipswich didn't have the best of seasons in 2008/09 but additions such as Lee Martin and Damien Delaney could make them a force this season, especially with Mexican Giovanni Dos Santos in their ranks. Middlesbrough vs Peterborough United Middlesbrough were unable to avoid relegation from the Premier League last season after several years in the top flight. If manager Shinchien Leong can keep hold of their valuable assets they are certainly one of the contenders for automatic promotion this year. Their opponents are also new to the Championship via promotion from League 1. Two successive promotions is a fantastic feat in itself, could they make it three? Doncaster vs Reading Doncaster had a good first season in the Coca Cola Championship last year finishing 14th, while their opponents on Saturday, Reading, finished 4th. Despite their strong finish, they were beaten by Burnley in the Play off Semi Final thanks to great goals from Paterson and Thompson in the second leg. Reading have since released captain Graeme Murty and are hoping to build under the stewardship of new manager Ryan Pearson.
