Match Preview

Division 2

Birmingham failed to impress in their first game in Division 2 with a lucky 1-1 draw with QPR with the home side dominating most of the match and taking the lead through a 49th minute Freddie Sears goal and looked set to cause a real upset until the 79th minute when Carvalho Kleber got on the end of a corner a rare corner for Birmingham to salvage a point for them.

The draw leaves Birmingham in 11th place while QPR are in 12th

Wigan Athletic 2 Millwall 0

Wigan started there division two campaign with an impresive 2-0 victory over the recently promoted Millwall. New Wigan signings Higuain and Ireland scored the goals, the former getting the man of the match prize. Wigan have been predicted to win the title after getting relegated from division 1 last season. Gaffer Chewett, who only took over a few games to go last season, spoke to SkySports after the game ''We have made some good signings pre-season, mainly Higuain, an Argentina internatinal, he scored today and played superbly. The other lads played their socks off too, an all-round great performance. Credit is due to Millwall though, like us they are new boys to the league, yet they have a good team and they'll do just fine.''

Rochdale start season off on a high note

Joe Thompson securing Dale's win on the 74th minute

Rochdale fans tonight travelled to Valley Parade in hope that their newly appointed manager Jim Randall can get their season off to a good start against Bradford City. Rochdale broke the deadlock on the 20th minute with Nathan Stanton grabbing Rochdale's first goal of the season with a towering header. Shortly after half time chances wen't begging for both sides, with Rochdale skipper Jones missing an open goal and Bradford's Clark missing from 8 yards out. Rochdale then secured all 3 points on the 74th minute with Joe Thompson finishing off a very cool Rochdale move. So with Rochdale getting off to a flying start under their new manager Jim Randall questions will still be asked as a job vacancy is still availible at the Bradford City role tonight.

Re: English Championship 3951 - Transfer/Gossip thread

Predictions - Season 2 - Turn 1

Divison 1

0 Manchester City 3 - 1 Newcastle United 1

Man. City have a lot of quality, but are now lacking in depth. They should get off to a good start though, but will find it much harder to get results as the season goes on. It's the opposite for Newcastle, so much depth in the squad with a total 136 players in their squad, they don't have the quality that Man City do though, Man. City should win.

0 Everton 1 - 2 West Ham United 2

Everton have a lot of quality in their squad, as do West Ham. West Ham have more match-winners though, with the likes of Ribery and Diego Capel at the club, and I think they have enough quality to get the win.

2 Hull City 0 - 4 Liverpool 1

Hull have one one of the the weakest squads in the divison, they dont have much depth in the quality that they have and will be in the dogfight at the bottom to stay in the divison. Liverpool have one of the strongest squads in the divison, Gerrard is doubtfull and Arbeloa is out for the game, but Liverpool have plenty of quality, and this should be a walk in the park for the Reds.

2 Blackburn Rovers 1 - 1 Chelsea 4

Blackburn had a great season last year, and won the league, and they've continued bringing in talent, signing Nico Kranjcar, Michael Dawson and Valeri Bojinov. Chelsea have a great squad though, and will really trouble Blackburn, but their is a big difference in the quality in the managers. I think Blackburn may snatch a point in this one.

1 Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 0 Bolton Wanderers 1

Tottenham have a superb squad, and have managed to improve on their squad by signing Capdevilla for £5.5 + Bale. They've got a lot of depth in their squad aswell, and are one of the better sides in the divison. Bolton have got a good squad, but Bolton's quality are coming towards the end of their careers, I think it could be won in the last 15-20 minutes. Bolton are also without Van Bommel and Govou, so Tottenham to win it.

1 Aston Villa 3 - 0 Stoke City 1

Villa don't have much depth in their squad, but they do have a lot of quality in their squad. Jose Angel Crespo is injured, but he was unlikely to play anyway. Stoke have plenty of numbers, but Villa's quality is likely to win it, with Stoke failing to have any match-winners. Villa to win it.

2 Portsmouth 1 - 0 Preston North End 2

Portsmouth have a squad of real quality, with the likes of Cole and Albiol at the club. They do have one or two talented youngsters aswell, and are likely to get a mid-table finish. Preston have brought in players towards the end of their careers, and with no quantity in quality. Marco Borrielo is suspended, with Wellington now likely to play. Portsmouth win.

1 Manchester United 5 - 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1

Manchester United are always likely to win when they play at home, they've got a great side, cutting down on the squad size, but improving on the quality of the squad. Wolves are currently unmanaged, and despite having some good players, they dont really stand a chance. Easy Manchester United win.

0 Arsenal 5 - 0 Ipswich Town 2

Arsenal should easily win the game, they've got some of the world's brightest talents and some really quality upfront with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Ipswich have a squad a lot older than Arsenal's, Luciano Civelli is also out with an injury. Arsenal to win.

2 Burnley 2 - 2 Fulham 1

Burnley have a lot of quality, with the likes of Chamakh and Jovetic, and those two could be the key to Burnley this season. Fulham also have a lot of quality, especially in attack, aswell as some very good young players. I predict a draw, with the sides quiet evenly matched.

Divison 2

3 Sunderland 2 - 0 Reading 3

Sunderland have a lot of quality in their squad, and are one of the favourites to win the divison. They've extended to the quality of their side in the summer, with the signing of Dejan Stankovic and have a full fit squad for the season opener. Reading have also got a very good squad, Readings is a much younger squad and is looking like a superb squad in the future, but on the night I think it'll be a Sunderland win.

2 Wigan Athletic 3 - 0 Millwall 0

Wigan have an excellent young side, plenty of quality in both attack and defence, and are favourites to win the league. Millwall have got a good side, but not up to the quality of Wigans. Easy Wigan win.

0 Sheffield United 1 - 1 Nottingham Forest 1

Sheffield United have an excellent side, this should improve on the whole in the Champinship rating changes. They haven't got much depth though, but in the early part of the season that wont matter too much. Forest also have a very good side, with a good mix of youth and experience, Forest have a much bigger squad then Sheffield United aswell. I predict a draw, but more of a point gained then two points dropped for Sheffield United.

2 West Bromwich Albion 1 - 0 Doncaster Rovers 0

West Brom have one of the strongest sides in the divison, plenty of depth in quality aswell. A couple of the WBA starters will rise in the next few days aswell. They're strength is at the back, but they've got plenty of talent going forward aswell with the likes of Shaun Wright Phillips and Kevin Davies. Doncaster also have a lot of quality, but not throughout the side, with very though wingers and full-backs in the side. West Brom to knick the win.

4 Leicester City 2 - 1 Coventry City 0

Leicester have plenty of numbers, but no real quality in the side. Their a very young side, but slightly obsessive about they're youth, with the only player over 23, is 37 year old goalkeeper Sergio Bernal, who has been transfer listed. Coventry have managed to extend they're budget as much as they can, bringing in some real quality in Giovanni Espinoza and Valon Behrami, and have managed to bring in 3 loan signings to extend the size of the squad. They're isn't enough experience in the side though, with only a few players over the age of 30. Leicester to edge it.

2 Sheffield Wednesday 2 - 0 Norwich City 3

Wednesday have a lot of needed experience, aswell as some youth in the likes of Tommy Spurr. They've also managed to sign Eden Hazard on-loan, who will be key to them this season. Norwich have got plenty of numbers, and a lot of young players. They do have limited quality and experience though. Sheffield Wednesday to win comfortably.

5 Watford 1 - 2 Cardiff City 0

Watford have got plenty of quality, with the likes of Eider Gudjohnson, John O'Shea and Ben Foster, but in a tight league like divison 2, an unmanaged club will usually get beat on the tactical side of things. No real quality for Cardiff, but plenty of numbers who are all capable at this level. Cardiff have a great manager, in Dan Griffin, and should get their tactics right. Cardiff to edge the away win.

5 - Most Build Up - Middlesbrough 2 - 1 Swansea City - Most Build Up - 3

Middlesborough have a very good team, with plenty of quality, especially in Attack. They've got numbers all over the pitch, but unfortunatly for them will be missing Mortan Gamst Pederson to injury. Swansea have a very good young team, with plenty of depth in youth. I think Middlesborough will have the experience to get the result though.

3 Bristol City 2 - 0 Peterborough United 1

The new manager at Ashton Gate has not had much time to get players in, but has signed a key player in Kim Kaalstrom, he could make an impact. Peterborough haven't got and quantity in their quality and are very fortunate with loans that they have a further 3 players who are capable at this level. They have a very experienced squad on the whole, with a huge gap up front, the gap will close in a few days with the rating changes but on the night the gap is their to be exposed, Bristol City are able to freely attack with no real threat in the final third for Peterborough.

1 Queens Park Rangers 1 - 1 Birmingham City 1

QPR have got a lot of English talent, who are all capable match winners, with the likes of Leon Osman and Peter Crouch. They don't have much numbers, but with the numbers they do have a lot of them are very capable at this level. Birmingham have a lot more quality in star players, with match-winners in their squad. They've also got a lot of young players that are capable at divison 2 level, with the likes of Phillipe Koch at the club. Birmingham are the more likely to get the win, but I think QPR can grab a suprise draw.

Leicester City 4-0 Coventry City

The home side got off to a very impressive start,

going a goal ahead in the first 20th minutes thanks to

strike from Badstuber and Tosic added a second in

the 22nd minute, putting Leicester firmly in the driver's

seat.

After the break, Coventry's lack of defensive discipline

cost them in the 60nd minute as young striker Forestieri

made it 3-0 with a thunder shot into the net. A deserve

goal for the young Italian as he assisted the two goals in

the first half. The home side were totally in control of

the game.

displayimagev.jpg

Fernando celebrated his first goal of the season

The visitor were also have some chances but failed to

make the break through. The Kaito's team continued to

dominate possession. It was four in the 71st minute, as

Forestieri pass the ball to Honda, the Japanese international

caresses in a curling shot past hapless Westwood to sealed

the win as the host coasted to an easy victory.

The Leicester boss told the media,

"I think we made it because we had the right mentality

against a team that was well organised."

"Scoring early made things easy for us and we were able

to manage the game in our favour which allowed us to

score more and win the match."

"The team playing well, full of confidents. A special mention

to Fernando [Forestieri]. He was brilliants, setup three goals

and scored for himself."

"We know a lot people and media have critic us because

of the lacks of experience in our team. But I believe in

my team. The chairman was not expected anything

for this season and we will try to get promotion."

Re: English Championship 3951 - Transfer/Gossip thread

Predictions - Season 2 - Turn 2

Divison 1

Newcastle United 2 - 0 Everton

Newcastle are on the back of an away win, whilst Everton are on the back of a home defeat. The momentum is certainly swinging in favour of Newcastle, and players like Di Natale and Juan Mata are on form, after leaving the West Ham defence to pieces in their last game. Everton have a solid defence, but are lacking with attacking quality, they do have a fully fit squad though. Newcastle to win.

West Ham United 3 - 1 Hull City

Both sides are on the back of solid wins, West Ham showed a perfect balance of defensive and attacking play to beat Newcastle away from home. Whilst Hull gave Liverpool a huge shock, beating them 2-1 at the KC Stadium. Both teams will be missing players, Franck Ribery picked up an injury for West Ham in their away win, whilst Eduaord Cisse got sent off in Hulls win. Both players are vital for their teams and will both be major blows for their teams. West Ham have plenty of players to cover, whilst Hull will be lacking in a quality cover for Cisse. West Ham to ease to victory.

Liverpool 1 - 1 Blackburn Rovers

Liverpool suffered a major shock, losing away to Hull. Whilst Blackburn were unlucky not to get a better result then a 4-2 defeat at home to Chelsea. Liverpool have a lot of quality, Blackburn are known to cause upsets as they managed to win divison 1 last season. Liverpool to slip up again, 1-1 draw.

Chelsea 1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea got a convincing victory, against championship Blackburn. With Didier Drogba, showing his quality with a vital hat-trick for the blues. Tottenham could only manage a draw at home to Bolton though, they failed to take their chances before finally get the equaliser, 3 minutes from time. Chelsea to edge the win.

Bolton Wanderers 1 - 2 Aston Villa

Bolton performed well in their last game, drawing away to Tottenham and were winning untill just 3 minutes from time. Aston Villa also got a 1-1 draw, but in a game that they were favoured to win. Bolton haven't got much quality going forward, and rely on their defence to get vital results. Aston Villa have plenty of quality, and are always given plenty of chances, with Javier Mascherano in the hearts of the midfield. Aston Villa to knick the 3 points

Stoke City 2 - 1 Portsmouth

Stoke managed to grind out a valuable away point at Villa in their last game, and will be confident of getting something from Wednesdays game. Portsmouth were dissapointed with the home point they got against Preston, Preston are one of the favourites to go down, but dominated played with 62% possesion, despite Portsmouth having the likes of Raul Albiol and Joe Cole at the club. Portsmouth wont go in to the game with much too cheer about, and I don't think they'll leave the game with much too cheer about either, Stoke to win.

Preston North End 0 - 3 Manchester United

Preston will be happy with the away point they got at Portsmouth, but Manchester United will be dissapointed in failing to beat Wolves at home. Renato will be missing for Preston, and their wont be much quality in the cover that they use in centre-midfield, with either inexperienced Tom Hately or even less experienced Mehmet Ekici or Jonathan Dos Santos filling in. Manchester United should come out comfortable winners in this game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 - 0 Arsenal

Wolves will be hugely pleased with the point picked up away to Manchester United. Whilst Title-Favourites Arsenal will be furious with the opening day performance, losing at home to the newly promoted Ipswich Town. Arsenal will be looking to bounce back in style, but i'm not sure that they can grind out the win.

Ipswich Town 1 - 0 Burnley

Ipswich are on the back of a shock win, away to title-favourites Arsenal, and will be up for the return to Portman Road. Burnley are also on a high, after an opening day victory at home to Fulham with striker Marouane Chamakh scoring a brace. I predict Ipswich to win it, with home advantage on their side.

Fulham 0 - 2 Manchester City

Both sides are on the back of dissapointing defeats, Fulham lost away to Burnley in a game they must of though they could get something out of. With Manchester City losing at home to Newcastle, dispite being favourites for the game. Manchester City will still have their best players fully fit, and surely must win now as they have a very small squad and players will begin to tire as the season goes on.

Nottingham Echo Match report

Nottingham Forest 1 v 0 Sheffield United

Saviola 83min

Match report

Forest travelled to Bramall lane for there first game in div 2 and came away with all 3 points. The game was as predicted very tight throughout, possention was mostly shared as was shots on target. In truth this game could have gone either way with N'Gog missing a open goal later in the game and a very lucky goal for forest savoila secured the win.The forest manager will not be unhappy though,he brought 3 points home from a tough away trip and with West Brom on Wednesday those 3 points may help to adress the balance if they lose against WBA which the critits will be expecting.Considering the quality of the Forest squad the Echo expect the players to up there game for Wednesdays game ,especally as it will be the first Home game of the new season and the fans will want to see the new signings justify there tranfer fees.

Managers quote

After the game the Echo quoted the forest manager as saying "3 points is a great start for us,we did nt set the world alight no, but its early days and the new players need a little time to gell".Onwards and upward we need to fully focus on WBA on Wednesday, they have some top,top players and it will be a real early test for the players, but as the chairman said yesterday, its a marathan not a sprint. If the players give 100 % l ll be happy.

Sheffield Wednesday to revamp side

sheffield-wednesday.png

Sheffield Wednesday boss Andrew Clifford is to revamp his side over the coming week after his players come off there transfer bans respectively,This has caused much debate in Yorkshire with many feeling Clifford has shown a lack of respect to the side that got them into the playoffs last year and has overreacted to the opening day defeat to Norwich City.

However there is also a majority of fans who believe that the manager should be trusted after last seasons achievements and if he feels that the squad should be improved the opportunity should be taken,The rumour mill has now started after several departures have been announced as to who will replace them with the likes of Simone Perrotta and Stefan Kiessling to be two of the players will be replacements to key players such as Palacios and Brandao.

Everton's Manager said he wouldn't be surprise of a loss and that is exactly what he got. The team play was disappointed by Everton and they were shred to pieces by a well constructed West Ham team. Manager Scott gave his praises to Gavin Kenny.

Manger

Scott

First match of the season everybody wants to win but it wasn't to be for us. The players are no way altered by the loss. They had to adjust from the game plan completely to allow our best players on the field. We had numerous shots on goal but we couldn't keep possession. I tell you that West Ham team was tough but nevertheless that is what these English Championship are about.
It does not get any easier for us with away trips to Newcastle and Liverpool and then we host Chelsea at home. Critics are saying we wont win any of our first four matches but that is why they are critics and I'm the manager and we will not lose four matches in a row.
It's hard not to talk about the big rivalry game coming up against Liverpool in Turn 3 and by then is when I want all the pieces of the puzzle to be placed together. They also lost their opener but we know there are problems in Liverpool as the manager is said to be in hiding.

Despite Derby's two goals, they still crumble to Barnsley at home.

Yesterday evening Dan Griffin took over Derby County in search for his first win under the team, but they crumbled to a well organised Barnsley side who thumped some daylight into Derby at Pride Park. Derby have a lot of players over 30, but with Griffin's obsession with youngsters should change the setup around Pride Park.

Griffin's men take the trip to Huddersfield on Wednesday evening in search to get their season back on track, and with new signing Miguel Veloso set to make his debut, things could be heading the right direction for Derby County once again.

Derby: Sanchez, Ibarra, Sala, Uzulmez, Mertens, Skjelbred, Giannokopoulos, Tikhonov, Cresswell, Koutsiniak, Bellucci.

Barnsley: Coupet, Wilson, Ayala, Wheater, Rool, Emerton, Diao, Rocchi, Taraabt, Crespo, Yulinidia.

Arsenal finally kick-started their long-anticipated season at home, against new comers to the EPL, Ipswich Town, which saw the Emirates sellout and bring in a crowd of over 60,000. As soon as both sides made their way out the tunnel the atmosphere became electric, and to the Arsenal fans' credit, they reserved a special applause for former Arsenal great- Robert Pires, now playing with Ipswich.

It didn't take long for the first scoring chance, as an eerie looking Arsenal side, perhaps overwhelmed by the occasion of the season starting at home, with high expectations coming into this season of a trophy, looking nervous and quite edgy, where caught off guard in the first minute with Shevchenko latching onto a long ball, beating Almunia with an outside the foot shot, yet the ball caught the outside of the post. In a quick rebuttal Arsenal answered in there attack with Pato firing a cracker from 25 yards out, which sailed well-wide. Arsenal still looking razzled found leadership, from Fabregas, who looked like he was trying to calm the side down, no that it helped, as 10 minutes later, Gary Mcauley, struck a beautiful overhead kick, which went over Almunia's head, 1-nil to Ipswich! From then things only got heated as Pato was angered over a vicious tackle on him, forcing a yellow card upon himself. It seemed Ipswich where in total control, with the Arsenal midfield conjuring up very little passing plays, and leaving Pato, and most importantly Ibra, isolated from the match. 1-0 at half-time to Ipswich.

The same was pretty much the same story for much of the second half too, to the point where Kylan decided to bring on Walcott, Denilson and Rosicky, yet to no avail, not much changed, despite Walcott, showing much effort to scheme up a goal, but no end product. Arsenal's fate was sealed for a season-opening loss when the former Arsenal man, Pires played a cross on into Fletcher, who merely just stuck his foot out, to connect with the ball, giving Almunia very little chance, 2-0 Ipswich. Pique looked furious at the back, trying to encourage his team ... with only 8 mins left .. it seemed to have worked though, as in the 86th minute, sub, Rosicky went on a crazed run down the left wing, cutting in, and unleashing a wicked shot, just grazing the post, final score 2-0 to the visitors, Ipswich Town who have to be commended, the first match, after coming up from the Championship, at the Emirates, and coming away with all the 3 points. To no avail we where unable to get any reaction from Arsenal management or the players, most likely due to what people will view as an upset for Arsenal, and a horrible outing, start to the season.

- GAME ACTION -

FOOTBALL01-04-09-11-20-03.jpg

Steven Fletcher celebrates in the 15th minute after putting the visitors, Ipswich Town ahead, 1-nil, as Arsenal got of to a nervy start, and never where able to recover.

Alexandre-Pato385_269310a.jpg

Arsenal hitman, Alexandre Pato, proved to be a loose cannon today, getting a yellow card, and always finding himself in trouble, growing ever-frustrated, showing much of a temper.

gun__1239873962_pires_farewell.jpg

After the match, despite much of the Gooners fanbase feeling the blues after losing the match, they still stayed on to give Robert Pires a standing ovation for his many contributions and play for Arsenal in his red-days.

y188173824329678.jpg

While that was going on, the Arsenal players' faces where more focused on the matter at hand - a season opening loss at home to Ipswich! Where will they go from here?

Re: English Championship 3951 - Transfer/Gossip thread

Good result for the portsmouth team in there opening game of the season. With very limited cash and not being able to make any major changes to the team, manager Ricky Martin has managed to gel the team together so they are able to play well with each other. A few big money signings are in place now but after that first perfomance, fans should be confident of a good season ahead.

Manager Scott promises better performance against Newcastle.

Everton wont have it easy trying to get their 1st win of the season after loosing to West Ham in the season opener. Newcastle are at home and it should be an exciting match.
