Wednesday, 22 August 2012 18:14 Should FC Porto really offload Hulk?

The Brazilian forward may prove decisive, one way or another

images.jpgHulk is likelier than ever to leave FC Porto by the end of August, provided one of the interested clubs is actually willing to fork over the €60 million his employers are asking for. Therefore, this issue raises some interesting, pressing questions.

1. Is it worth it to keep disgruntled employees on the payroll? The example of Álvaro Pereira has been making it plain for everyone to see that there is such a thing as good timing and bad timing to sell one of your best players. Last year FC Porto's left-back was one of the most sought-after players in the market, believed to command a transfer fee of approximately €22 million. Pinto da Costa, usually a savvy trader, chose not to sell him (least of all to Chelsea, who had just hired his former coach somewhat bullishly). After a less than average season, Pereira's value plummeted to something around €13 million, if the press rumours are to be believed. If FC Porto's president goes down the same path with Hulk, will the same thing happen to the Brazilian? If that is not enough, let us not forget about the cases of Maniche, Costinha, Derlei, Bruno Alves and Raúl Meireles, to name but a few.

2. Can FC Porto play without a star player on the wings? FC Porto have been playing some sort of 4x3x3 since Mário Jardel was offered to António Oliveira (except for a string of matches under Co Adriaanse). In fact, there aren't that many teams nowadays that are as faithful to this system as FC Porto have been over the last 15 years. António Oliveira, Fernando Santos, Co Adriaanse, Jesualdo Ferreira, André Villas-Boas and Vítor Pereira have been wary of moving what seems to be a pre-established order, from the outside. A winning 4x3x3 needs a complementing midfield - a reliable holding midfielder (which Porto have in Fernando), a high-paced box-to-box midfielder (João Moutinho) and a creative spark (which Lucho hasn't been able to provide since he returned to Porto) - but, most importantly, a good 4x3x3 must have width (Barcelona is a non-issue for this matter). If Hulk leaves, FC Porto will be almost winger-less, since James tends to drift inward, Djalma was loaned out, Varela seems to be going down Vítor Pereira's pecking order and Iturbe's real value is still unknown. Even though Danilo and Alex Sandro may be able to prove their mettle, it's a tall order for them.

3. Who will be the star all the other players will look up to? Say what you will about Hulk, but he's proven time and again that he does not shy away from matches and that he doesn't go MIA when things get tough. On the contrary, his ability to decide matches almost singlehandely often makes him try too hard and sometimes makes his team-mates forget about creating passing lines. If Hulk actually leaves, FC Porto will miss an attacking reference to look for when matches get cagey, either in the Champions League or the Portuguese league. Despite all his improvement, James is too mercurial (at least for now), Jackson Martínez has just arrived and no midfielder has those particular traits.

All in all, FC Porto will be faced with a tough task, no matter what their option (or lack thereof) may be. Keeping a player against his will hardly ever works, even when he papers over the cracks, but on the other hand, allowing Hulk to leave may open up a hole in the squad and put a huge burden on whoever replaces him on the team.

Not all players! The ones are being added (the u-19 portuguese players and others).

For example: A gameworld is created in 1st September and the players is added on the dabase in 2nd September. That player might be a free agent!

Re: PORTUGAL – 1st and 2nd Division extensive thread - Discussion Thread

Can I ask why James Rodriguez has only started one of the 2 matches so far? Not something to be worried about in SM terms is it? I'm sure I'm reading too much into nothing :o

James made a "not so great" first match and Atsu made a enormous one, as Hulk is in one wing, Atsu and James are "fighting" for the other winger place.

Also James will maybe take the place of Lucho as the nº10 of the team. James could bench some games, will play as a winger in others and others for the place of Lucho.

Nothing to be worried about ;)

Well he doesn't want to stay at Benfica and he should leave. But I think Benfica is asking too much for him. Benfica don't count on him either, they have Salvio, Bruno César, Nolito, Ola John and Enzo who seems to be at the pole position.

Let's see what happens tomorow ;)

what's your opinion on nabil ghilas of moreirense has had a good start to the season' date=' will he feature regularly all season also it looks like espinho and Augusto will be first team players?[/quote']

I know Ghilas since last season and I was impressed by his skills when he played for in some cup games against first division teams.

And now he shows that he is really a first division player and a good one, he is an unknown talent I think.

For the other ones, I haven't seen enough yet ;)

Porto en Fulham melden zich voor Odjidja, Gençlerbirligi, Sheffield en NEC voor Vleminckx

FC PORTO

The have make there bid yesterday late for Vadias Odjidja cm-dm-am played whit CLUB Brugge.

About Vadias in belguim, he was the best cm the past season, verry hard workend player.

a vacuum cleaner on the Middelveld, good overview, quick, good distance shot, good pass, the leader of the team.

venturing his chance, regularly takes his goal with, someone who brings peace, who can win the ball and can go alone on the target, if there are no other options, not afraid of a hard takle. also pretty good in defense, cleans the balls that other leave, a bit of everything of a player ,doing in the belgian competion terribly well.

good acquisition for Porto ... Fullham has also made an offer, but I think he's going to follow the other Belgians defour and half Belgian mangala.

Bruma will play all the games so he will rise.

I don't know if he will be promoted next season because he is only 17 but what I know and I have written about that is that he can be the next best portuguese player.

Re: PORTUGAL – 1st and 2nd Division extensive thread - Discussion Thread

Why isn't Ola John playing for Benfica?

My guess is that Ola John has to adapt first. He played in the pre-season not so spectacular but good enough to be at the Staring XI.

In the beginning of the season Jorge Jesus would put players that he thrust more. In all wingers of Benfica, Ola John is the youngest one and least adapted! Thats why he is not playing so much and Benfica have much more experience and older players like Bruno César, Eduardo Salvio and Enzo Perez for the wings.

Don´t you worry! Benfica spent 7.5M in the transfer of Ola Jonh. He will play but, you to wait a few more games;)

It will be Cedric Soares' date=' a young and very talented kid.[/quote']

Do you think Cedric can reach 86/87 at the end of the season? Perhaps more

He is very talented, very balanced in attacking and defending. I have faith on Cedric to make forgettable João Pereira and to replace him in the National Team ahead of Miguel Lopes.
