FC Twente maintained top spot with another convincing victory tonight. Blaise Nkufo got a double, the third Twente player to do so in 3 games.

Twente now face a run of 5 home games out of their next 6, including the home tie of the SMFA Shield, and the first round of the Dutch Shield, so now the season is theirs to take, and after this performance not many would bet against the Owen Hargreaves led side.

Great night at Old Trafford

Manchester United 2 - 1 Liverpool

Rooney 43*

Riera 44*

Scholes 51*

It was new Man Utd manager Rhys Evans's first big challenge as the Red Devils welcomed Liverpool, was a game pretty even with great performances from the United players.Wayne Rooney opened scoring on the 43* with a great volley, United had dominated most of the first half, but United's celebrations were short lived when Albert Riera tapped off Benyoun cross, the game went in at half time at 1-1.

Second half started spritley for Man Utd when Paul Scholes slotted the ball home, the game turned on its head when Liverpool started dominating possesion with numerous chances but with no avail, the game finished 2-1 to United and the manager had this to say after the game.

Delighted with the boys performance right from back to front, Would like to point out Paul Scholes who was influential for us today getting himself on the score sheet and the veteran also picked up Man Of The Match.

Evans deighted with Scholes performance.

Double delight for Heerenveen debutant

Match Summary

An emphatic 2 goal display from new signing, S. JEAN CARLOS has helped Heerenveen upset Standard Liege 3-2 in front of a sellout crowd at the Abe Lenstra.

The result gives Heerenveen its first win of the season as well as handing previously unbeaten Standard Liege its first defeat under their new manager.

The first goal came in the 29th minute, with JEAN CARLOS pressuring and forcing the Liege defense into a poor mistake at the back. The Brazilian was able to capatalize to give the home side a one goal lead at the break in what was a fairly unconvincing 1st half performance from both sides.

When the teams emerged from the break, Liege looked the much livelier, dominating in just about every facet of the match. It was only a question of 'when' rather than 'if' the Heerenveen back-line was able to hold up. Up stepped Aston Villa discard, S. PETROV who in the 58th minute, from outside the box, silenced the home fans with a stunning curler landing in the top corner of the goal. 1-1 with still a third of the game to play ...

Just after the equaliser, it was the Heerenveen Manager who made the big moves, subbing a defender off for a forward as well as replacing the 5-3-2 formation with a more attacking 3-4-1-2. This decision paid immediate dividends, with D. MICHKOV poaching a goal in the 62nd minute and another great finish from JEAN CARLOS in the 66th gave Heerenveen a commanding 3-1 lead with just 20 to play.

Some pure brilliance from former Villareal now Liege midfielder, A. IBAGAZA reduced the margin back to 1 and it was almost a sense of Déjà vu, considering Heerenveen had blown the lead in their 2 previous matches. The last 10 minutes was all Liege, with L. JIMINEZ embarrassingly missing an open goal which summed up their night.

Standard Liege dominated shots and possession and will be ruing this game as a 'missed opportunity'. Despite being lackluster, Heerenveen were still able to slot 3 goals against good opposition and can take confidence into their next match against FC Groningen.

A very emotional side celebrating their first win of the season.

Friendly match

Lesson for the youth and Evans

Birmingham City 4 - 1 Manchester United

Benitez 24*

Bilbija 47*

Benitez 57*

Benitez 78*

Manchester United travelled to St Andrews last night for a friendly, great chance for both managers to show any young stars they have, but it seemed Birmingham had they're strongst out while United fielded a young team, the game was even on the stats but some clinical finishing from Christian Benitez proved vital for Birmingham as he netted a hat trick.

Was a pretty poor showing from the United youngsters, the only player to stand out was Nemanja Bilbija the player got himself on the score sheet and was Evans's best player by far.

Cup delight for Evans, as Frei sinks the Cobblers

Manchester United 3 - 0 Northampton Town

Frei 70*

Alexander Frei stopped any doubts over the signing of the player after he netted a hat trick for his new club, the player was in sensational form as he lead the front line with Owen. United were under strength, a performance from Aaron Ramsey was seen, but we all thought he was on loan to Cardiff, Evans had this to say on the game and the situation with Ramsey.

Yes Aaron was at Cardiff but looking at my tactics board monday I knew I needed him after knocks to 3 midfielders. We performed very well tonight with great showings from all the players, Alexander was superb tonight shaw gives me something to think about before the Arsenal game Wednesday.

Frei delighted with his goals

An Atletico team ruled by injuries edged a narrow game at Estadio del Mediterráneo on Saturday night. Atletico, who started with Saddick Adams and Alvaro Dominguez, were facing an uphill task early on when Modeste M'bami opened the scoring for Almeria. Czech defender Tomas Ujfalusi equalised for the visitors just two minutes later and the comeback was eventually completed on 83 minutes through in-form striker Diego Forlan. The win for Atletico is their fourth in the league this season - their only loss in the domestic campaign coming on Halloween night as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Osasuna. Heerenveen sinks luckless Feyenoord

Match Summary

SC Heerenveen have secured an impressive 3-1 win over Feyenoord in what was a fairly one-sided encounter at the De Kuip Stadion.

Heerenveen's Brazilian duo of S.JEAN CARLOS and C. PAULO HENRIQUE were simply unstoppable up front, with the latter cashing in with an impressive 2 goal first half display. The second half was much of the same, with new signing, J.SZEKELY slotting a screamer, which all but ensured a valuable away win. Despite scoring a late consolation goal from J. DE GUZMAN, Feyenoord's midfield failed to impress, managing a measly 38% possession in front of their home fans.

LEFT:C. PAULO HENRIQUE always seemingly 'one step ahead'.

RIGHT: SC Heerenveen celebrate after the final whistle.

The win sends Heerenveen up to 2nd place on the Eredivisie table, which is a fantastic achievement considering the manager's expectations prior to the season opener. After 3 consecutive 'upset' wins, SC Heerenveen will look to continue their good form when they return home to face strugglers, NAC Breda on Wednesday.

On the other hand, Feyenoord have made their worst ever start to the season in the clubs history, picking up just 1 point in their first 5 league games. Pressure is starting to mount on Feyenoord's manager, Dave Izod as their season continues to slip away.

Club Best and Fairest ...

After each league match, the coach and directors of SC Heerenveen will select who the best three players on the day for Heerenveen were via a 3-2-1 voting style. At seasons end, the player with the greatest accumulation of votes will be declared as the Club's Best and Fairest player.

The inaugural Abe-Lenstra Medal will be awarded to the player adjudged the SC Heerenveen Club Champion over the immediately preceding Dutch football season. It is named after Abe Lentra, widely regarded as the best player to have represented Heerenveen back in the 1950's.

"To win the first ever Abe-Lenstra medal and be engraved in our club's history will no doubt motivate the players to bigger and better things!" said the manager.

"We're having our best season in decades and it would only be fitting to reward our current squad for what they have achieved so far. Having said that' date=' It's still early in the season and although 'anything can happen', I'm confident we're heading in the right direction. Our goal is to finish in the top half for now, we'll reassess our position during the mid-season break. "[/center']

Darlinton Update:

English Shield Round 3- Darlington 1 Preston 3

Following on from the fantastic win over Tottenham in the last round Darlington's reserves took to the field hoping to cause another upset but alas it was not meant to be. The omens looked good when Nathan Porritt fired Darlington into an early lead, however preston showed there better ability with 3 good goals to send a brave Darlington tumbling out of the cup.

League Matchday 6 Macclesfield 1 Darlington 3

Darlington maintained there impressive league form with a routine victory. A brace from Veteren striker Dean Windass and a debut goal from on loan Werder Bremen star Bargfrede sealed the points before a late lapse in concentration allowed Macclesfield a consolation goal.

The win keeps Darlington top with 16points from 6games, 3 clear of Accrington Stanley and other teams managed by forumers Chester and Notts County close behind.

"I am delighted to the start of the campaign by no means are we the strongest in this league but we are playing well and we hope to continue and push on in what is an extremely competitive division 5 with at least 8-10 really good teams for this level"

It has been rumoured in the press that pauley's impressive start to the season has not gone unnoticed and it is rumoured he has been approached by the Southampton board, Pauley remains tight-lipped on this and wont respond to any speculation.
