Re: GC75-Official Thread. News/Match Reports!

SMFA Champions Cup

Round 1 Leg 2 Preview:

Bayern München (2) V (1) Lyon: Should be a tight match with both teams in really good form but Bayern are the favourites to progress here after an excellent 2-1 victory in France. Bayern currently have a 4 point lead at the top of the German league while Lyon have been running away with the French league a massive 16 points clear at the top. Both teams have excellent managers' date=' Dai Winston for Bayern and Ray Pauley for Lyon. Prediction 2-1 Bayern to progress.

[b']Boca Juniors (0) V (2) Villarreal:[/b] A comfortable 2-0 victory for Villarreal in the first leg should prove enough to see them progress. Having said that the form side here has to be Boca who are unbeaten in 7 in the league, whilst Villarreal have only recorded 1 victory in their last 8 league games. However Villarreal do currently boast the competitions top scorer, Joseba Llorente with 5 goals. Prediction 2-1 Boca but Villarreal to progress overall.

Chivas de Guadalajara (0) V (3) Real Madrid: A confident performance by Real Madrid in the first leg makes them odds on favourites to progress here. Despite a wobble in the league recently which has seen their lead at the top cut down from 10 points to now just 3 Madrid should prove too strong for Guadalajara. Real are expected to play their reserves for this match but they should still progress with ease against a currently unmanaged Guadalajara side. Madrid also have perhaps the greatest manager of all time at the helm. Prediction 1-2 Madrid to go through.

Club América (0) V (1) Internazionale: Inter take the slenderest of leads over to Mexico and this should be a very tough tie for them. They are the overwhelming favourites in this tie but a shock could be on the cards. Both teams are top of their respective leagues and in good form. No doubt Inter boast the better players here but Club América wont be a pushover. Prediction 2-1 Inter to progress on away goals.

Juventus (1) V (2) Werder Bremen: This tie is finely in the balance here. Juventus's away goal could prove to be crucial here. Juventus have had an uninspiring season thus far, sitting 15th in the league whole Werder are 3rd in the German league. The game probably hold's more importance to Juventus and no doubt they will be up for this game, however they have really struggled to score goals this season. Will likely be a low scoring affair which could go either way. Prediction 1-0 Juventus to progress on away goals.

Liverpool (2) V (2) Fiorentina: Liverpool go into this match as favourites having come away with an excellent 2-2 draw in Florence. Both teams find themselves way off the pace in their respective title races so both teams will be all out for the win here. Liverpool holding home advantage should progress here, but dont discount Fiorentina completely as they are still in this tie. Prediction 2-1 Liverpool to progress.

Manchester United (3) V (4) Roma: These two cooked up a thrilling encounter when they last met and hopefully more of the same coming up. Manchester United are in great form at the moment, are 6 points clear at the top of the EPL and should be full of confidence. Roma have been stuttering a bit lately and United could prove too strong for them. Prediction: 3-1 Manchester United to progress.

Marseille (1) V (1) Atlético Madrid: Despite Marseille holding home advantage Atlético are the favourites here. Marseille havent won in 5 games in the league and are missing some key players through injuries, while Atlético are in scintillating form - 9 wins and 2 draws in their last 11 league games. Prediction 0-2 Atlético to progress.

some excellent predictions, you got all the clubs to progress right bar one I am only to pleased to say!! :)

SMFA Champions Cup

Round 1 Leg 2 Review:

Bayern München 1 - 3 Lyon, Lyon win 4-3 on aggregate: In a surprise result Lyon travelled to Munich and beat Bayern 3-1. Goals from Clerc and Kallstrom had the visitors 2 up inside 20 minutes before Luca Toni brought the tie level overall before the break. Lyon kicked on in the 2nd half and got the winner through El Hamdaoui on 71 minutes.

After the match we caught up with a delighted Ray Pauley "We are absolutely delighted to progress through to the next round,I like to offer commiserations to Bayern who provided us with tough opposition as im sure Juventus will next round however if we play to our potential i believe my players can beat anybody and we will be giving it our best shot that is for sure."

A visibly disappointed but philosophical Dai Winston had this to say "This first season is all about the League for Bayern. We want to command Germany at this stage but as I attempt to improve the squad we will switch attention to the SMFA in coming seasons. So, going out at the first knockout stage last night was disappointing but not the end of the world for us. I played a "weaker" team to keep players fresh for our Bundesliga push.

That "weaker" team has done me proud this season, every player staking a claim for a first 11 place. We came out of a very tough group this season, beating the likes of Atletico Madrid, Porto and Celtic. Good luck to Ray with Lyon in the next round."

Boca Juniors 2 - 0 Villarreal, 2-2 Villareal win 3-1 on penalties: Villarreal made tough work of this tie. Having the comfort of a 2-0 lead should have had them confident going into this match, however a goal for Boca from Viatri after half an hour seemed to knock the Spaniards as they were all over the place. Fuentes was red carded on 76 minutes and from the resulting free-kick Cristian Chavez put the tie all square. From then on in there looked to only be one winner, however Boca couldnt get the crucial goal while Villarreal looked a danger on the counter. The tie was eventually settled on penalties with a relieved and somewhat fortuitous Villareal winning 3-1.

Chivas de Guadalajara 1 - 0 Real Madrid, Real Madrid win 3-1 on aggregate: As expected Real sent out their reserves for this match, adopting an unfamiliar defensive approach. The game was few on chances and few on quality. The only goal coming just before the interval from Ávila. In truth Madrid always looked in control and seemed to stroll through this match. Post match madrid's manager told us "in truth this was an awful game of football, very dull not and uneventful - but that was exactly what i had wanted. I am obviously happy to have progressed to the quarter finals and am very much looking forward to facing Liverpool, it should be a good game.

Club América 1 - 5 Internazionale, Inter win 6-1 on aggregate: This game was seen as a potential banana skin for Inter, and in fairness although the scoreline would suggest otherwise there was little to seperate these teams. Finishing wise however Inter blew away their hosts with goals from Lucio, Quaresma, Milito and a brace from Eto'o. Club América's only goal came from Micola but it was scant consellation for a heavy defeat.

Juventus 2 - 1 Werder Bremen, 3-3 Juventus win 2-0 on penalties: In an evenly contested match at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino Werder Bremen can consider themselves extremely unfortunate to have gone out of the competition. A piece of pure genius from Luka Modric had the home side into an early lead as he showed great skill in embarrasing Werder's defense before scoring a lovely goal. Rising star Mesut Ozil equalised on 64 minutes but 3 minutes later Juve retook the lead through Maazou. After 2 legs nothing seperated these teams so we had to go to the dreaded penalties, and Bremen were simply awful not scoring a single penalty losing 2-0.

We managed a quick word from Werder manager Craig Johnson as his players trudged off the pitch "I'm as sick as a parrott right now, no-one likes to go out like this, it's not as if the lads have done anything wrong, they just didn't get the rub of the green when it mattered. On the plus side, we can take from it that we matched a side stronger than us on paper over 2 legs, and now we can concentrate fully on a good finish to the league campaign."

Liverpool 2 - 1 Fiorentina, Liverpool win 4-3 on aggregate: Liverpool won a hard fought match here. Raul had put Liverpool into the lead on 37 minutes with a bullet of a shot which smashed off the underside of the bar and went in. 3 minutes later a bemusing call from the referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco who showed Javier Mascherano a straight red card for diving. The home fans were rightly furious at this as were the players and the manager. However Raul kept his head and on 69 minutes scored his second to ease the home crowds nerves. 2 minutes later though Castillo made it 2-1 to ensure a grand stand finish to the match. Liverpool managed to hold on to set up a quarter final clash with the mighty Real Madrid.

After the match we questioned Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco on his baffling decision to send Javier Mascherano off, who will now miss the matches against Madrid, he refused to comment. However it has subsequently come out that Alberto is a massive Real Madrid supporter...

Manchester United 1 - 0 Roma, 4-4 Manchester United progress on away goals: This match failed to live up to the enthralling first leg where both teams went all out for the win. This was a more cagy affair with both teams seemingly afraid to lose. The only goal was scored by Ji-Sung Park just before half-time. The only other action of note was a red card to United's Luis Anderson.

Marseille 0 - 2 Atlético Madrid, Atlético win 3-1 on aggregate : As expected Atlético cruised to a 2-0 victory in Marseille. They dominated the possession and had twice as many shots as their hosts. Clearly the better team progressed here as goals from Assuncao and Pernia sealed their place in the next round.

Quarter Final Draw:

Villarreal V Manchester United

Atlético Madrid V Internazionale

Real Madrid V Liverpool

Lyon V Juventus

Bordeaux have agreed a deal with Bayen for the transfer of German international midfielder, Bastien Schweinsteiger. Wendel and Ciani will head to the Allianz Arena in exchange.

Schweinsteiger will link up with Gourcuff in the centre of midfield, a formidable creative force ahead of stopper Alou Diarra.

Lyon Update:

League form falters after championship secured, but Champ League progress is gained in tight encounter:

League Matchday 32- Lyon 2 Sochaux 1

Lyon gained a tght victory after goals from El Hadaoui and Florent malouda put pay to a determined, gritty Sochaux.

league Matchday 33- SM Caen 1 Lyon 0

Wh the Champs leaue QF return in Juventus in mind pauley fielded a second string side and was made to pay as unfancied Caen managed to cause an upset and beat Champions Lyon. The vital moment coming in the 54th minute with a goal from Pez earning the home side a famous victory.

SMFA Champs CUp QF 2nd leg- Juventus 2 Lyon 1 (Agg 2-2 away goal win)

Lyon scraped through to the semi-finals and a meeting with Manchster United after coming through a tense, nervy encounter in Turin. Things appeared to be heading to plan when El Hamdaoui put Lon ahead however Juve equalised almost immediately. The game appeared to be up when Juventus were reduced to 10men but the numerical advantage did not show as Juventus pulled level on aggregate through Alex Teixeria. Juventus then proceeded to pummel the Lyon goal but despite a few hairy moments the Lyon defence held firm and took Lyon to the furthest they have evr ben in European Competition.

League Matchday 34- Lyon 3 Toulouse 3

Lyon earnt a point after a late late show coming from 3-1 down after 87mins to earn a point as he big hitters came off the bench to rescue a draw for the home team. There is no doubt that Lyon's level of intensity in the league has dropped dramatically since the title was secured and elementary mistakes have crept in which will need to be ironed out if Lyon want to win either the domestic or European cup. Yildrim, El Hamdaoui and Clerc with the goals.

League Matchday 35- Grenoble 1 Lyon 3

Lyon got back to winning the ways in the league as a youthful, exhuberant side produced a solid display to see off grenoble. Russian starlet Dzagoev hit a brace whilst French winger griezmann also got in on the act as Lyon eased to the victory.

168_front_small.pngINTERNAZIONALE 1 - 2 BAYERN MUNCHEN61_front_small.png

Lahm (22)

Klose (46)

Zanetti (56)

Last night, Bayern Munchen capped a memorable season by lifting the SMFA Champions Cup. It is Bayern's third Trophy of the season in what could have been a quintouple season. The Charity Shield was lost to Bayern Leverkusen. Very disappointing after Bayern dominated in his first season in charge and wanted to continue in the msame fashion in season 2.

Bayern went on to win the German Shield with relative ease. Scoring 17 goals in their five games and conceding just 3. Winston knuckled down and played his strongest team in the SMFA Cup games, making the competition top priority.

League form was still very good considering a 'weaker' team was being played. Bayern were pushed right until the final day of the League campeign and needed to match Schalke's result to win the Bundesliga. They did that emphaticly with a 3-1 win.

Then came the grueling schedule of the German Cup quarter final (A win vs Hansa Rostock), an SMFA Cup Semi-Final first leg ( A 0-0 draw away to Milan), A German Cup Semi-Final (A 3-1 win against Schalke), the SMFA Cup Semi second leg 2 days later ( A 1-0 win against Milan at Home), the German Cup Final another 2 days later ( A very frustrating and disappointing 1-0 loss to Bremen) followed finally by the SMFA Cup final another 2 days later! A WIN!

Winston blames the stupid fixture list for denying his team what would of been an amazing quadrouple.

Winston's comments following last seasons early SMFA Cup exit:

This first season is all about the League for Bayern. We want to command Germany at this stage but as I attempt to improve the squad we will switch attention to the SMFA in coming seasons. So, going out at the first knockout stage last night was disappointing but not the end of the world for us. I played a "weaker" team to keep players fresh for our Bundesliga push.

I told ya'll!

Wigan Athletic are a win away from securing 3rd place. Nobody could have expected this outcome when Singaporean manager Yap took over, but he won over the fans instantly, as he led his unfancied team to a 11-match unbeaten run. Wigan have already secured a SMFA Champions Cup spot, something which even the most ardent of fans wouldn't have envisaged at the start of the season, but if they win at Bolton Wanderers today, they will finish ahead of Liverpool regardless of their result, behind champions Manchester United and runners-up Chelsea.

Rotherham United Complete Rise to the Summit

It's been a long old road, but tonight Rotherham United shall complete their journey from the depths of Division Five to the promised lands of top flight football by being crowned champions of Division Two. The Millers have in fact had the title in the bag for a couple of weeks now but will look forward to tonight's trip to the Walker's Stadium, after which captain Taras Mykhalik shall hoist the Division Two trophy aloft.

Rotherham's rise through the divisions has been a remarkable achievement, storming through with four successive promotions. After a stuttering start which saw the Millers clinch promotion from Division Five as runners-up way back in season one on the last day, Rotherham have marched up the pyramid with consummate ease, winning Division's Four, Three and Two by remarkably wide margins. Indeed, Rotherham have lost just eleven league games in four seasons thus far.

The architect of this success is none other than Andy Howat, who has transformed Rotherham from a poor team into a one that must be feared next season by those in Division One. The squad has continued to evolve over the seasons, and now is in a position to challenge even the top dogs of Division One. Here is how the squad looks today:

Eduardo 89

Vorsah 88 - Mykhalik 89 - Armand 89

Isidoro 83 - Forlin 88 - Astori 88

Gonul 89 - - - - - - - Medel 88 - - - - - - - Santos 89

Piszczek 88 - - - - - - - Possebon 77 - - - - - - - Spyropoulos 88

Ledesma 89 - Janssen 89

Yebda 88 - Marquez 88

Erding 89 - Sow 90

El-Arabi 88 - Carroll 88

And with a highly promising youth academy that continues to grow, the future of Rotherham United Football Club looks bright. Europe's elite should watch out.
