Darlington considered dark horses for Premier League title after major signings

Arjen Robben unveiled as a new signing by Darlington

Darlington have now considered as one of the Dark Horses in the Premier League after announcing the signing of Dutch wing maestro Arjen Robben and Milan striker Alexander Pato for a combined fee of £46 million. Robben was bought after a stellar season with Bayern Munich but also with the Dutch National team at the World Cup. Whilst Pato was bought after wanting to move on from Milan after yet another trophy-less with A.C Milan.

Darlington now have one of the strongest strike partnerships in the Premier League on paper with Pato most likely now to partner with Gonzalo Higuain who was another major signing last season but has suffered a injury plagued season.

Manager Jason T expressed on a pre season tour of Australia that this season in the Premier League will be the toughest season for him and the club since the caliber of players in the Premier League are at a "higher standard than before with the likes of Ronaldo , Messi , Kaka, Rooney and Xavi have the ability to destroy teams on their day." He also said that "The depth of the squad and not getting many injuries to key players early in the season will be a defining factor in whenever we have a chance in winning the Premier League."

Antonio Valencia dribbles past his defender to score

A double from Alexandre Pato has propelled newly promoted side Darlington to their 4th consecutive league victory moving to 6th in the standings only 11 points behind a undefeated Liverpool side who Darlington next face.

This season, the Darlington defence has been at fault to the defeats this season and it looked likely that these events would continue when Brazilian Robinho skipped past Georgi SCHENNIKOV and scored his 1st goal for the new campaign. Darlington didn't take long to reply when Antonio Valencia was able to beat two defenders in a swift counter attack to slot home a great solo effort. The attacking pressure of the Darlington strike duo Pato and Higuain was getting to hot to handle for the Man City defence when Pato was unable to convert a header into the goal but he soon redeemed himself his miss-hit shot rolled into the back of the net. Half time and the scores were 2-1 to Darlington.

Alexandre Pato points to fellow team mate Higuain as he scores a double

The start of the 2nd half was the start of a Man City capitulation with Lucio gifting his Brazilian compatriot his 2nd goal and his 8th for the season with a poor back pass then earning a straight red for foul play. With a man down, Man City started to play more attacking and more direct with playmaker Diego leading the charge with some super through balls and a long ranged effort hitting the crossbar. But his efforts soon came to nothing when Gonzalo Higuain scored despite clearly being in an offside position so score his 1st for the season. Darius Vassell neatly scored a curling shot in the 80th minute to add some respectability to the score but young central midfielder Kwadwo ASAMOAH was able to finish off a wonderful team goal where the score was 5-2 to Darlington.

After the match Manager Jason T told Sky Sports

The teams needs to continue to put in a strong performance like today in order to knock Liverpool off their perch. I thought Pato, Higuain and Valencia played brilliantly and expect more of the same when we play Liverpool at Anfield.

Anfield left shocked as Darlington produce last gasp winner

The homecoming of former Spanish duo Álvaro ARBELOA and Xabi ALONSO was overshadowed by a 88th minute goal from defender Thiago SILVA . Through this historic victory, Darlington are now 5th on the League and have now bridged the gap between Liverpool and Darlington to only 8 points. Their next match is now against fellow promoted side Ipswich Town.

By not fielding a relative full strength side by Liverpool manager John Weasel would soon be back to bite him as Darlington played a almost full strength side and it showed as the Darlington midfield and attack were constantly firing shots on goals. The homecoming of former Liverpool fan favorite Xabi ALONSO was not full of roses as the Liverpool players especially Jamie CARRAGHER constantly attacking him which ultimately lead to a yellow card to CARRAGHER after 32 minutes. Sabrosa SIMAO had the best chance of the half when he was free from his marker but fired his shot wide. Half time and the scores were 0-0.

The start of the 2nd half saw Darlington almost break the deadlock when Álvaro ARBELOA was called offside after a swift counterattack. Manager John Weasel was encouraging more attacking play and it brought immediate response with Sánchez JOAQUIN and Krkic BOJAN playing some wonderful combination play only to be denied by Hugo Lloris . After 88 minutes of play through a Arjen Robben corner, Thiago SILVA fired in a superb volley to win the match for Darlington in front of a silenced Anfield crowd .

Manager Jason T talking to the BBC

This is a historic day for this club. To come to Anfield and not only score, but also keep a clean sheet, it sends a big message to the other teams that Darlington is a force to be reckoned with.

Darlington have progressed into the 3rd round in the English Shield after thrashing Tottenham 5-0 . Darlington would have to play without left back Aly Cissokho due to a gashed head during the match and is estimated that he will be out for 4 weeks . Their next match is against an Everton side who also won their Shield match 1-0 against Crystal Palace.

The match saw Tottenham start the better out of the two sides playing some good possession football. A 30 yard strike from highly rated youngster Steven Defour tested Darlington keeper Hugo Lloris but Lloris was equally up to the task. Tottenham soon fell asleep when mercurial winger Arjen ROBBEN dashed past the Tottenham defence to score from 10 yards. More trouble was coming for Spurs as Marek Hamsik curling strike went past Russian goalkeeper Igor AKINFEEV. Half time and the scores were 1-0 to Darlington.

The 2nd half saw Tottenham's blue head striker Vagner Love get sent off for a late challenge on Aly Cissokho. Darlington took advantage of the situation when Lucas BARRIOS pounced on a loose ball in the box to score his 1st English Shield goal. Tottenham fans were deflated even further when a brace from Man of the match Kwadwo ASAMOAH after 69 and 81 minutes. Darlington were still looking to further their impressive lead after an exquisite pass by Gregory VAN DER WIEL left Lucas BARRIOS to finish off with an overhead kick but sailed over the crossbar.
