Czech Jarolim in international action

Portsmouth FC confirmed that bids have been accepted from Lyon and Hamburger SV for the midfield duo of Kim Kallstrom and David Jarolim respectivley.

Kallstrom can play as either a CM or LM and it is believed he will join the south English team for £2 million plus Turkish striker Halil Altintop. Czech midfielder Jarolim will make the move for around £3.1 million plus Spanish centre half David Navarro who has failed to settle in England despite being a starter for Pompey.

Portsmouth manager Patrick Coll expressed his delight at the signings and told Portsmouth TV;

I felt that we needed more bite in midfield and Jarolim will give us that. I also thought we needed a playmaker and I believe Kallstrom can fill that role. I really believe the fans will appreciate the quality of these players once they are fully match fit.

In other transfer news, the club have accepted bids for Abriel,Duljaj and Makeev after they were said to be surplus to requirements. Although all 3 bids are undisclosed it is expected they will make the club around £16 million which will be used to fund further transfer activity.

Jagielka Deal completes Swansea's Spending

Phil Jagielka joins Swansea, as the South-Wales club complete their spending for the time being

Swansea City have completed their signings for the time being with the arrival of former Sheffield United & Everton centre-back Phil Jagielka from Turkish club MKE Ankaragucu.

Jagielka joins for a bargain fee of just £6,000,000 as the replacement for American centre-back Oguchi Onyewu who joined Milan this week,

Jagielka is the third signing of the day for Swansea, as they looked to finish all their deals today, with James Tomkins & Jamie O'Hara also arriving in Swansea today,

He arrived in Turkey in a shock deal, joining for a fee of £7,900,000. But like Tomkins & O'Hara he found it difficult settling abroad and he wanted a return back to England.

Leicester almost signed Jagielka but pulled out of a deal, as they looked to raise the funds for a bigger and more exciting target. Sheff. Utd also showed their interest, and Jagielka had said that he'd love to return to the Yorkshire club but the Blades never made a bid for Jagielka.

Then Swansea came in for him, and it wasn't long before Jagielka completed his move to the Welsh club. Jagielka is delighted to have joined Swansea and looks to get a regular place in the side.

He will look to achieve Swansea's aim in reaching the play-offs, and he'll look to reach Division 1 with Swansea. He also is hoping for Swansea to overhaul Cardiff and reach the final of the shield were he'll look to make history at the Welsh club.

Fulham Match Preview

Fulham come into the game tonight off a 2-0 deaft to the much improved Arsenal. With this being a game managers boy hood team Manchester United. He is likely too go all guns blazing to show the Red devils what they have missed not taking him on as there manager.

It seems the current Manchester United manager has forgotten all about his team as he has checked about them in ages. They are going though a transitional season . They have a poor run off form recently not winning in 4 losing the last 3 the manager is trying to do all he can to get them going in the right direction. But as of just now the languish in 10th.

It is likely that Fulham will give debuts to two of there new signings and what more could you ask for on a debut a change to pit your wits against there world very best in many people eyes. Leandro Almeria will not make the Xi . But Michael Kadlce and Anderson Hearnes are in line to make the debuts it is unlikely that the new striker will sign in time. Fulham are selling most of the team after tonight game so it will be interesting to see how they play.

Manchester United are likely to make 1 change to the side that lost to a first minute Gilardino goal to Everton. Injured Alvaro Arbeloa will miss the game with a bruised foot and it is likely that David Santon will fill the fullback berth left by Arbeloa

TURN 24 - THE CHAMPIONSHIP CHECK UP

15 games to go this season - and everything in the Championship division is to play for really. For top to bottom - points are pretty important. Teams at the top will want to stay where they are - but for teams outside the playoffs, looking for a top 2 placing, or fighting inside the bottom 3 - they will quite literally - as the song says - want to "MOVE IT!"

Coventry City vs Newcastle

Positions = 1st vs 2nd

  • Here its a cracking game promised at the Richo Aren as Coventry look to hurt wobbly of late Newcastle and strengthen their promotion hopes.

Prediction: 2-0

Ipswich town vs Swansea City

Positions = 18th vs 5th

  • Swansea are looking to win here tonight as the top 2 meet themselves, they could be back in the real reckoning for a top 2 place. Ipswich meanwhile are looking for survival points, and these would be big!!!

Prediction: 0-1

QPR vs Sheffield Wednesday

Positions = 3rd vs 15th

  • Consistent Rangers will like Swansea want a win here to mount pressure on the leagues leading lights, but can the Owls prevent this, and improve their chances of getting away for the bottom, and back into playoff contention??

Prediction: 4-2

Watford vs Middlesbrough

Positions = 4th vs 8th

  • Watford and Middlesbrough are 2 very strong teams and have playoff or even promotion ambition. Who will be stronger tonight at Vicorage Road?

Prediction: 2-1

Sheffield United vs Leicester City

Positions = 6th vs 7th

  • Another mouth watering game here as 2 teams looking for a playoff berth colide!

Prediction: 2-4

Bristol City vs Peterborough

Positions = 9th vs 11th

  • Yet another 2 fighting for the up! Can Posh make it a posh night tonight - just like they did at Ashton gate earlier on this season (won 5-1) or is it sweet revenge for the Robins?

Prediction: 1-1

Ipswich Town 1 - 2 Swansea City

The Big Picture

A Darron Gibson wonderstrike helps Swansea back into the match as they go onto beat a relegation threatend Ipswich Town

Swansea City have token a 7 point gap on 7th place as they look like they could be in line for a comfortable play-off finish with 14 games left in the season.

Swansea went behind early on, but Ipswich were reduced to 10 men and Swansea fought their way back into the match with two second half goals as they put the pressure on the teams above them.

After beating Coventry 4-1 on Saturday & also beating Preston 1-0 on Monday with 20 different players being play the Swansea boss a few headaches in his team selection.

But despite good performances from the likes of Ilan, Swansea opted to play the majority of the side that beat league leaders Coventry. James Tomkins came in for his debut at centre-back, with Pereyra a suprise partner for Arouna Kone in the Swansea frontline. New signing Jamie O'Hara was on the bench aswell, and in contention of being brought on for his Swansea debut.

James Tomkins comes into the squad, making his debut at the heart of the Swansea defence

Early on, and it looked like Darron Gibson had been played through on goal with the keeper as he raced away from the Ipswich defence. But the linesman raised his flag for offside to the frustration of the Irish midfielder.

Damien Delaney then had Ipswich's first chance in the match. He found space on the left hand side, but racing towards goal he struck over the bar as Ipswich missed a great opportunity.

But then as Ipswich thought they missed their opportunity they took the lead. Nicolas Gaitan beating Rafael, and with plenty off space on the left he crossed the ball into Biabiany on a plate for the Frenchman who just converted the ball into the net. Biabiany has found goals hard to come by this season, but his 4th of the season may give him the confidence to help fire Ipswich out of their relegation threatend position.

Biabiany gives Ipswich the lead, with just his 4th goal of the season

Dorus De Vries then had to be at his best to deny Biabiany from scoring a quick fire double. Biabiany conneted with Delaney's cross and it looked like it was heading towards the top hand corner, but De Vries got across his goal to tip the ball over the crossbar.

Towards the end of the second half and Swansea felt they should have had a penalty. Darron Gibson had forced himself into the box, and was pushed to the ground and off the ball but the linesman waved away the penalty appeals to the relief of the home team.

Then at the start of the second half and Swansea were given a way back into the game. Ivan Tomecak bringing down Arouna Kone as the last man, Tomecak clearly knowing what he was doing and there was no doubt in the referee's mind that it was a red card offence.

Tomecak shown straight red for a proffesional foul, as Swansea are given a way back into the game

The game stayed quiet though and Swansea found it hard to get back into the game. Ilan was brought on, as Swansea switched to a 4-2-4 in an all out attempt to get back into the game.

And this substitution immeadiatly inspired the team, as they scored a goal as soon as Ilan was brought on for Zoran Tosic. Darron Gibson picking the ball up from deep and striking the ball straight into the top hand corner. A contender for goal of the season for Gibson who has been superb since he joined Swansea on loan at the start of the season.

Darron Gibson levels the scoring, with a contender for goal of the season.

A couple of minutes and later and Swansea had another opportunity to score. Leiva Lucas getting away from his marker but failed to capatilise on the break as his cross was sliced into the crowd.

Then with 10 minutes remaining and Swansea took the lead, as they completed their second half comeback. A long ball across the box from Colin Kazim Richards found Juan Pablo Pereyra free at the far post who apped the ball into the gaping goal.

Juan Pablo Pereyra's winner finishes off a second half comeback, as Swansea go on to beat Ipswich

That goal was enough to give Swansea all three points as they look in search for a play-off place.

Next up for Swansea is a tough league game, as they're at home to Watford on saturday. Watford are in 3rd, whilst Swansea are in 5th but a win for the Jacks will put them above their play-offs rivals. With a lot at stake going in to the 6 pointer.

Post Match Interview

A good three points, did you know your players had enough to complete the comback?

Yes, the side has enough quality to get back into games after going behind. There's a lot of character in the squad, and it's not the first time we've come from behind to win a game. On Saturday we went behind against Coventry, but went on to win 4-1, so there wasn't any doubt in my mind that the players had the quality to turn the game around. They still had to work for it, and Ipswich didn't make life easy for us despite going down to 10 men, and some great individual performances from Darron Gibson & Arouna Kone aswell as Ilan when he came on was enough to give us the three points.

Yes, Darron Gibson inparticularly was superb. Is he vital for you this season?

He's had a great season, and is an ever present member of our squad at the moment. He got his deserved man of the match award, and a phenemonel goal which he's always got in him. He's been a superb loan signing for us, and has given us some extra edge over the clubs in our division. Although it will be tough for a place in the team up untill the rest of the season for Darron with Jamie O'Hara joining the club.

You keep on winning, but so do the sides above you. Is this frustrating?

Very. We're lucky that we have been winning as the competiton for a play-off place is pretty huge. I'd say anybody in the top half of the league has a shot at reaching promotion, as everyone just keeps on winning. It's certainly frustrating that after a hard earned victory like today, the likes of Watford & QPR both win although we've managed to gain some ground on Newcastle. We're happy with the gap over the 7th team though, and we don't have too many tough games left in the season. We'll look to get those tough games out of the way, with a couple coming up in the next couple of games and then we'll need to pick up some form with a few games up against lower teams in the league. We fancy our chances at a place at the play-offs, but there's some hard work to do yet.

Henry simply superb in wiping out Burnley

Blackburn Rovers moves to 6th in the table with a seven goal thriller at Turf Moor that saw them just edging Burnley with heroics from French man Theirry Henry.

The Rovers who were reduced to 10 men in the 33rd minute with some indiscipline behavior by Dimitar Berbatov who shoved the referee to the ground knew that 3 points was the only option to leave Turf Moor with. At times looking extremely flat in their play, the defense was virtually extinct but both strikers Kalinic and Henry stepped up their play in the absence of Berbatov to come away with a victory.

After the midweek report that the chairman ordered Rovers boss, Yhanick Scott to start the 22 year old Croatian Kalinic. The manager obliged and was treated with another outstanding performance by Kalinic who netted once more and is now just 2 goals behind Wayne Rooney's 13 goals. The manager yet again altered the formation that the team lined up in, where the manager deployed a 3-2-2-2-1 formation deploying three strikers upfront and leaving three at the back. It was very evident at the disadvantage at the back and Burnley almost took full advantage of it.

nikola-kalinic-200.jpg

Nikola Kalinic seems like a must start for the remainder of the season

The match started off rather promising for the Rovers With Malouda and Javi Martinez setting the tone early in the midfield and with just five minutes in the game Malouda had the Burnley Keeper working with his free kick just off the edge of the box.

It was Burnley who went on the score sheet first with an error in the three man defense allowing Joey Gudjonsson to be one on one with the keeper with Joey easily getting around Robinson to put the home side one goal up.

With just six minutes after allowing Burnley to score, Blackburn did some scoring of their own and from a player Blackburn fans thought did not remember how to score. Thierry Henry netted with a wonderful strike with his left foot just 15 yards from goal. Henry had played seven games before this and failed to found the back of the net so many will say this was well overdue.

ThierryHenry1001_468x316.jpg

Thierry Henry after eight games scored the first of his Rovers career.

The game started to open up quite beautifully but was then spoiled by the disgusting behavior of Dimitar Berbatov who after being warned for arguing with the referee proceeded to push the referee to the ground.

Berbatov sent off after 33 minutes

With Blackburn Rovers down to ten men, Burnley immediately took advantage, with Clark Carlisle scoring the second for Burnley but the 22 year old Croatian had different ideas. Scoring his 11th goal of the season to ensure both teams went into halftime leveled on two goals each.

The second half pretty much was all Burnley, with a three man defense and Rovers team down to ten men. Robbie Blake gave Burnley the edge once more with a volley from a corner kick, showing his fantastic athleticism.

0,,10413~6942237,00.jpg

Robbie Blake volleying into the back of the net

I

t was all Burnley way and with ten minutes left in the game Burnley looked to be quite sure of three points until someone named Thierry Henry showed why £10.7M was spent on him. On the 80th minute Henry single handedly created an opportunity with a one time finish from a pass from Kalinic to level the scoreline. Henry was not finished there as he proceeded to shock the home fans as within the next minute he found the back of the net for the third time. He had Clark Carlisle and Michael Duff flat footed, beating both defenders with another solo effort leaving the keeper with no chance, slotting home in the right hand corner.

Henry celebrating his 3rd goal of the night

Blackburn Rovers managed to hang on to the one goal advantage to come away with three points. Berbatov will be now suspended for the next three games and may even come under further actions from the club with his actions. Blackburn will now welcome Stoke City and three points should be automatically guaranteed.

MANAGERS WORDS

Let me first apologize for the behavior of Dimitar Berbatov and such behaviour will never be seen from any of my players ever again. He will be suspended without pay of £58,650 for all of the three games he is set to miss. We do not condone such behavior and if repeated by the player he will be fired. As it relates to the match, I am happy to come away with the three points. Very pleased in Henry but the game was much too close for my comfort.

England call-ups Lurk on the Horizon

Swans Captain Stephen Warnock is one of four Swansea players who could be inline for an England call-up

With England needing a win in tommorow's qualifier at home to Romania, four of Swansea's squad could be in line to make their first appearances under England boss Ahmed Gharib.

All of the squad have only recentley joined Swansea, with Swansea skipper Stephen Warnock being the main player in for contention for a place in the team. The other three in line for a place in Gharbi's team, is Phil Jagielka, James Tomkins & Jamie O'Hara.

O'Hara & Warnock are the two likely contenders to get into the side. O'Neil & Guthrie are suspended, with Gharib unlikely to keep Marney in the side so there's a big gap in the side for O'Hara to fit in. Whilst at left-back, Baines wont be favoured whilst in Egypt, and Bridge is ruled out with an injury.

All four of the players have said that they would be delighted to play for England, in such a succesfull era under a manager like Gharib. Jagielka has said that joining a club like Swansea was always going to give the players a chance at a National team call-up and it was a real benefit in signing for Swansea.

Jamie O'Hara & Phil Jagielka could be making their England debuts even before they make their Swansea's debuts. But Gharib is yet to release his squad for the Romania match, and he does have a tough job in selecting his team.

Manager Scott

If Hartlepool United are serious on closing that 8 point gap between them and Shrewsbury Town then manager Andy Howat should get this kid. As it stands now though if any manager is interested they should contact me immediately.

Five Goal Thriller At St Mary's

Southend United walk away from St Mary's stadium with a great 5-0 win,the blues have closed a 9 point gap from the play offs and now are outsiders to reach them. 20 yer old Stijn WUYTENS claimed the first in 17 minute with an one on one attempt with the keeper wich saw a great finish put into the back of the net. The second came from the young german Philipp BARGFREDE with a calm quick goal.237477-philipp-bargfrede-ist-bei-werder-bremen-unverzichtbar_485x364.jpg

da silva jucilei scored to make this a truely one team show who also grabed motm with his great performce getting a 10 outof 10.John O'shea got his first for the club in his second appreance for the club, the big money singing showed quailty at the back and poked home an simple goal.John-OShea-001.jpg

As half time struck southend new it was no contest with 4 already scored and still 45minutes to play. The side went back out and southampton go some confiendce and went for an all broke attemp. Soon after the Belgium grabed his second.WUYTENS at the 71th min to finish the game off.

We had a word with the manager

"It was a important game for the club with another 3 points to add to make us 9 points of the playoffs..... We have a hard norwich who are 3rd place and will be hard to claim 3 points but will look to pla as good as we did today and pull off a show"

Also John O'shea had a few words to say

" Yeh it was a hard game even though we scored 5, it intense when they come to attack and i believe we played very good today and look to keep this up"

Fulham Sign Four.

355019.jpg

The Cottagers have signed even more players and the manager has said his season spending has not finished as he still wants to bring in two more players before the weekend game but it's highly unlikely that many of the new signings will play.

Oleksandr GLADKYY has joined the side the 22 year old joined from Shaktar as the manager attempts to bolster his squad Gladkyy is unlikely to make his debut as he needs longer to adapt to the much faster football over here but the managers has high hopes for this younger forward he has said he is still learning but he has bags of potential.

Christian NOBOA has also joined the Cottages he has joined from Russian team Rubin. He is a highly rated player in his home country and also in Russia . Fulham had to beat of competion from plenty of well know teams including Peterborough and Leicester too name a few. He is likely to put straight into the XI as he has bags of quality and creative skills.

Nicolas LOMBAERTS again 25 has joined he is a defender and he has plenty of experience with 7 Belgian caps . He is just exactly what Fulham need to survive a good tall pacey and no-nonsense defender that why he has been likened to the likes of Nemajan Vidic. He if he keeps up his from he could go a much bigger club in the not so long future.

Milos NINKOVIC has also joined from Dyanmo Kiev . The Russian and Ukraine scouts have done well unearthing some gems. Nikovic will not play at the weekend . He is also another creative player he like Noboa will look to be the creative spark that the Cottages have been missing. He can play at Lm or Am so he will give plenty of options for midfield

Defour Winner Deepens Pompey's Worries

Portsmouth 0 - 1 Chelsea

Defour 62

A 2nd half strike from Steven Defour was enough to seal the 3 points for Chelsea and moves them up to 7th in the league. On the other hand another defeat for Portsmouth sees them slip down to 19th and relegation looks ever more likely.

igor-akinfeev.jpg

Chelsea keeper Akinfeev pulled off a host of shots to keep Chelsea in the game

Chelsea started the better side and on the 6th minute Pompey keeper Brad Friedel was forced to make a fine save after Didier Drogba hit a fierce effort from just outside the box. A minute later full back Ashley Cole was through on goal after a great run but his effort veered way off target. Down the other end Pompey should have opened the scoring on the 17th minute after a great cross by Pandev found Tymoschuk in plenty of space but the Ukrainian failed to capatilise on the chance. Tymoschuk did almost score on the half hour mark but his 30 yard screamer was well tipped over by Akinfeev. As the half time whistle went it remained 0-0.

large_784684.jpg

Defour's 62nd minute goal was enough to win the game for Chelsea

Chelsea could have been ahead only 7 minutes after the break when Ivanovic latched onto a through ball and charged towards goal only to see the linesman's flag raised. However with 62 minutes played the deadlock was broken when a long range effort from Kaka was spilled by Friedel and Defour raced in to score. Defour could have had a second only minutes later when again Defour made a seemingly good run but he was ruled offside. As full time approached the home fans urged their team on. Efforts from Kallstrom and Maxwell within 2 minutes failed to beat the Chelsea keeper. Marquez could have won with 7 minutes remaining but his 15 yard shot slipped past the post. It finished here, Portsmouth 0, Chelsea 1.

Jacks on International Duty

Jagielka (Back Row, Far Left) lines up for his first England appearance of the season

As the International qualifiers reach their climax, the stars of Swansea City have been away on International duty as being ever present for their Countries aswell as their club.

Phil Jagielka made his big first appearance for England under Ahmed Gharib as they needed a victory if they wanted a realistic chance of qualification. England crashed out to a 5-2 victory at Wembley though, but Jagielka played the 90 minutes and was as good as anybody on the Wembley pitch.

Jagielka is delighted to have made his first game under Gharib, despite their defeat and is still confident that they qualify despite this major defeat. He's now looking for what's set to be his Swansea City debut as they face Watford tommorow.

Roque Santa Cruz helped Paraguay to just their 2nd point in their qualifing campaign, as they picked up a vital point away to Holland managed by Fulham boss Lewis Scorgie. He played well and is glad that their finally picking their act under boss Gerardo Martino.

Darren Pratley was also on international duty as part of the Jamaica squad. He didn't have a great game though, as Jamaica failed to stop Germany's 100% record as they qualified whilst Jamaica look like they'll be missing out on a spot in the World Cup.

Peterborough slump to there twelfth defeat of the season as they lost 3-1 to a strong Bristol City side who kept there promotion dream alive as they closed the game within the first forty five minutes.

Dutchman Cedric Van der Gun failed to pass a late fitness test before kick off, this saw 28 year old midfielder Jobi McAnuff take his place in the side and play his sixteenth game of the season.

Bristol could of been a goal ahead within the opening four minutes, but Georgios Samaras failed to poke home to put Bristol ahead. They soon nearly regretted there missed chance when Danny Guthrie hit the woodwork twice within five minutes to the 22 year olds disbelief. But Bristol soon hit back and took the lead minutes later when Georgios Samaras headed home after a wonderful delivery from Hugo Viana was headed in by the former Celtic player. Danny Guthrie failed to hit the target at the second chance of trying as Lukasz Fanianski parried the ball into his path, but to the Pol's delight he managed to block the Englishman's second chance on goal. George Boyd soon could of put Peterborough level as he was left in plenty of space but Lukasz Fabianski rushed off his goal line to leap onto the ball. Peterborough hit the back of the net on the half hour mark, Shane Long with the tap in after a long drive from Danny Guthrie was beat off by the Bristol keeper, Lukasz Fabianski. However, The score line didn't stay level for long as only 30 seconds after the restart Bristol were ahead again, Lucas Moya nodding home after a brilliant run down the flank by Graeme Dorrans equaled by a great delivery. Then Bristol suddenly made it 3-1 only five minutes later when a short corner was picked up by Georgios Samaras a looped around the unsighted keeper, Tomasz Kuszczak in the Peterborough goal.

Bristol looked more certain to score within the opening minutes when Hugo Viani headed just wide of the post. Peterborough then created a brilliant chance to revive there hopes of a victory when Gregory Sertic made a dash into the box and was played in only to have the flag raised for him to be offside. Krisztián Nemeth then followed Gregory Sertic's chance up by hitting a shot from 20 yards to just see it go a foot wide of the post. Peterborough brought on Aaron McLean and Tommy Rowe to try and boost there forward options and it nearly brought a goal, but Aaron McLean skied his shot over the bar.

Samaras celebrates his first on Wednesday night..

Peterborough manager Dan Tomlins said:
"Games have been tough lately so there's no need for us to kick our-self's, we currently sit in a comfortable position with still an outside shot of the play offs"

"Coventry won't be any easier at the weekend but we need to take every game as it comes and not to get our hopes up"

Bristol City manager, Tom replied when asked "How important was Samaras to the win tonght, and does he sometimes carry the team?"
"No, he doesnt carry the team, we are a team of 11 players thanks,"

"But he certainly made a cutting edge for us tonight," "Georgios is a striker. A striker scores goals, they are employed to do that - so a good striker will do their job, and score goals....," "If he didn't we wouldn't have him here - simple!," "Credit to Peterborough, theyre a good team, and everyone expected them to struggle this season, and theyre challenging along with us for a top 6 place, which is good for them,"

Moussa%20Sissoko2.jpg

Fulham are pleased to announce the signings of more younger players who have very bright futures. Both players are already internationals. Fulham have done well to beat of comeption from top clubs like Liverpool to sign the players . Fulham manager is now very happy with his squad.

Gokhan Gonul the highly rated 25 year old Turkish fullback who already has 13 Turkish caps. He is also widely expected to go to the World Cup , but Fulham fans will have to wait until Wednesday to see this very promising young fullback how will go straight into the squad as soon as he is math fit he gives another think for the Fulham fans to look out for. Did you know? in February 2008, he was ranked among the best 15 fullbacks in Europe, by Kristian Borrel in GOAL Magazine

We have also signed Moussa Sissoko who has joined for a very good Toulouse. Many Fulham fans did not expect him to join due to Fulham poor league position especially when Liverpool had a bid accepted on. But Sissoko always wanted to join Fulham as he has always liked Fulham and he liked the challenge of seeing one of his favourite clubs out of relagation fears.

Cordoba Signs For The Black Army

article-1161651-03D82C5E000005DC-664_468x345.jpg

They will now face each other in Premier League.

Sunderland has secured the services of Ivan Cordoba beating the likes of Palermo, Lyon, Atletico Madrid. Coach Maradona mentioned that he would sign another player before he is happy with his team. It turns out the player is Ivan Cordoba. Cordoba who spent 10 and a half season and has been capped for Colombia 67 times, is very pleased with the moves and said that it was Maradona's word who made him snub the other interested clubs and instead move to Sunderland.

I am very happy of moving to Sunderland. I haven't been able of watching so much Premier League this season, but I know that this league is regarded as the best league. Sunderland are doing well at the moment, I've heard that they are 2nd currently. I can only speak abit English so I have to work on that, but it's good that coach Maradona and some of the players (Forlin, Cavani and Bolatti to name a few...) can speak Spanish. I have to English courses *laughs*. I was on the move of joning Atletico Madrid, but then coach Maradona called me and said some words to me that made me join Sunderland instead. I am very pleased with that decision! - Ivan Cordoba on his first press conference in Sunderland.

Incredible Appointment Brings Hope...

pg-74-Eddie-Howe-AS_273919s.jpg

Northern Boy Brings Northern Cheer

Oldham Athletic announced an incredible appointment in the way of E.J Sutcliffe. The young manager, known mostly for the building of Rochdale in EC106, has a remarkable record, and the move, though temporary at first, seems a coup for Oldham. The young boss took over Rochdale in EC106, taking them to their first promotion in 37 years in his first full season in charge. Other notable work has been done with smaller clubs, taking Altrincham to promotion in GC71 in his first season. His good work with Tottenham in GC15, winning the SMFA Super Cup, finishing 4th in Division 1, and taking them to an FA Cup Final and a League Cup Semi Final in his first season in charge. Away from this, Sutcliffe could still be considered inexperienced, but in terms of success with smaller clubs, he is arguably the perfect man for the job. On top of this, he's a Stockport boy, and a Rochdale lad, towns that lie either side of his new club. He certainly has a chance to make a name for himself, but his job is veering upon the impossible.

460RochdaleMarkThompsonGetty.jpg

Sutcliffe: Known for his good work at Rochdale

Mission Impossible

Oldham are 11 points from safety. They lie bottom of the 3rd division, with the worst goal difference in the league. Sutcliffe's first game in charge is away at Charlton Athletic, top of the league. After signing the contract last night, the new manager has no time to bring in players before his first game, and so has to produce what must only be conceived as a minor miracle if he is to get something from tonight, and in turn, keep Oldham in the league. With 14 games remaining, there is time, but Oldham are seriously lacking in terms of squad size, and more importantly, squad quality. Sutcliffe must move quickly if he is to turn things around for the lowly club, ran into the ground by previous managers, who have not stuck around long enough to properly change Oldham's poor position. Sutcliffe hopes to change that, even if he might not be here by the start of next year...

sheridan_1366612c.jpg

Previous managers ran Oldham into the ground

Temporary Appointment

Both Oldham and Sutcliffe, have been sure to point out that they have not laid groundwork for the future as of yet. Sutcliffe has been appointed for one reason only, and that's to keep Oldham in the league. Both parties have admitted that they will assess the situation at the end of the season. Sutcliffe is admittedly keen to stay in the league, but according to insiders, may feel he is better than a 4th division club should they go down. The young boss has served his time with Rochdale, and built his reputation the hard way. Most feel that Sutcliffe is unwilling to accept low wages, low transfer funds, and more sub standard football at Oldham, however, the footballing world has seen much crazier decisions from Sutcliffe, so taking over permanently at Oldham is not against the odds.

Off The Field

One of Sutcliffe's biggest flaws, away from his arrogance, and tendency to upset other managers, is indeed his off the field antics. His private life at Rochdale was highly scrutinised, from celebrating promotion with a mass celebrity orgy, from dating Paris Hilton long term, to cheating on her with Amanda Bynes and most recently, Fergie. All of this seems to have tarnished Sutcliffe's glowing reputation on the pitch, and if there is one thing Oldham, and Sutcliffe, don't need for the remaining 14 games, it's distractions. In a press conference today, Sutcliffe spoke for the first time on his new job, and how he's putting everything else to one side, to concentrate on the job in hand. That job, apparantly, does not include any girls...

doug-reinhardt-and-paris-hilton-photo.jpg

Hilton and Sutcliffe rocked EC106... but not EC5579

Sutcliffe Says:

A strange decision, yes, but I like this football club. Before today, I was without a job, sitting around my Lancashire home with Fergie. I need something to keep me busy, at least until the end of the season. The Oldham job came available and incredible, I think out of desperation and hope, I received the offer. It's just what I was looking for. Admittedly, I can't make my own mark on this football club in such a short period of time, so this is not ideal, nor the job I would normally take. However, I am so sure that this is right. I want to consolodate Oldham's current position, and I want to keep them in the league. I have but 7 weeks to do that. A short period of time, but that is how long I will be here. I have told the chairman, and now I am telling the fans. I will definitely be here for 2 months, that's a certainty. However, I cannot make promises for after that. If a job offer comes knocking, or another becomes available, I may move, to further my career. I may keep Oldham in the league and move on. I may keep them in the league and stay. Alternatively, I could take them down and stay, with a job unfinished. Nonetheless, if I am to make one, full on, downright promise to those fans out there, it's that I will leave Oldham in a better state than they were when I joined. I know they are grateful, not many big names would take this job, but I'm here and raring to go. I have also told the chairman that there will be no distractions. I am not prepared to take Oldham down, so that means I won't be sleeping around. I have a girlfriend at home I am happy with, but that won't peter out onto the pitch or around the club. I want to spend time bringing good players in that I can trust to take us out of the position we are in now. It may turn out I have to build for my predecessor next season in the 4th Division. We will see how it goes. For now, I have a job, and I'm fully committed to making sure I do that job to the best of my abilities.

Can This Man, Seriously, Pull Off A Miracle, And Keep Oldham In The Division...?

Peterborough Fail in an Attempt to sign Matthews

Peterborough's £3,000,000 bid is far from what Swansea value Adam Matthews at

Swansea City have announced that they have rejected a £3,000,000 bid from fellow Divison 2 side Peterborough. Swansea immeadiatly rejected the offer, as they look to hang onto a great prospect like Matthews.

The full-back joined Swansea at the start of the season for £2,900,000 in a very cheeky signing from arch-rivals Cardiff City with Cardiff in need of cash.

Matthews has since made a total of 3 starts at Swansea in all competitions as he's faced competition from the likes of Rafael Da Silva, Angel Rangel & Amin Nouri throughout the season.

Peterborough were originally interested in Matthews when Swansea originally signed him, and have come in for Matthews once again but Swansea are far from pleased with the bid made for the 18 year old.

Matthews has 4 years left at Swansea, and wants to make himself a legend at his hometown club. His main aim is to get some sort of first team action this season, whether if its at Swansea or out on loan.

Adam Matthews has said that if he would leave the club it would be to a divison 1 club but at the moment he wants to have a succesfull career at Swansea City.

Peterborough may come in with an improved offer, but Swansea have said that there is no chance that he will be sold in the near future.

Matthews Arrives at Valley Parade in Loan Deal

Adam Matthews joins Divison 4 play-off contenders Bradford City on loan untill the end of the season.

In an eventfull day for Swansea right-back Adam Matthews see's him join Divison 4 side Bradford City on loan untill the end of the season. He'll now be a key figure for Bradford untill the end of the season as they look to reach the play-offs.

Today Peterborough made a £3,000,000 with Swansea immeadiatly rejecting the offer with the South-Wales club valueing Matthews at double that fee.

Matthews had only made 3 starts in all competitions though, and was unlikely to get any more football up untill the end of the season so was made availible for loan.

Peterborough came in with an improved offer of £3,700,000 which was immeadiatly rejected. But MK Dons, Northampton & Bradford all came in with loan bids for Matthews.

Bradford beat off the competition to sign Matthews though, with the young full-back working with Bradford boss Sean Fitzpatrick in the past. Swansea also wanted to make sure Matthews would get 1st team football so Bradford was the perfect opportunity for him to play regular football.

Matthews is in line for his Bradford City tonight, at Valley Parade as they face Walsall in a play-off scrap in Division 4. Bradford are on the back of four wins, and Matthews will look to help them to a fifth straight victory.

Swansea City 1 - 1 Watford

3, Kroos

19, Santa Cruz

The Big Picture

Santa Cruz on target as honours are even at the Liberty Stadium

Swansea City have opened up a six point gap on 6th placed Leicester City after they drew with Watford in a huge match between two of the strongest sides in Division 2.

Watford took an early lead, but the scores were soon level. But neither side could make an impact on the game in the second half meaning both sides had to settle for a point.

Jamie O'Hara had to wait for his Swansea debut, but Phil Jagielka came in to make his Swansea debut at centre-back in place of James Tomkins. Ilan couldn't take the place of Kone, despite his great form as he once again had to settle for a place on the bench.

Jagielka had made a good performance for England at centre-back and the former Everton defender was delighted to make his Swansea debut and as were the fans who have very high expectations of him.

With the first attack of the game though and Watford took the lead. Toni Kross skipped passed Jagielka and Rafael racing away from the defence and slotted past De Vries for his 6th of the season.

Toni Kroos celebrates a great solo goal to give Watford the early lead

Then Ignazio Abate left Swansea in relief as Watford almost doubled their lead moments afterwards. Abate skipped passed Warnock and put a dangerous cross across the six yard box but Franco Jara just couldn't make contact with the cross.

Toni Kroos then wasn't far off scoring as Watford looked to seal the game early on. Kroos wasn't going to have the pace to beat Phil Jagielka, but quickly turned and rifled his shot just wide off the far post.

But then as Watford looked like they were going to extend on their lead, against the run of the play Swansea took the lead on the counter attack. Zoran Tosic took a speculative effort from distance with crashed off the bar and straight into the path of Roque Santa Cruz who tapped into the empty net.

Santa Cruz levels with the easiest of finishes

Phil Jagielka then picked up a booking, but it could have been much worse. Franco Jara has skipped away from Jagielka, who came in with a high challenge on Jara who looked to have been in a goal scoring opportunity. The refere didn't deem it to be a goal scoring opportunity though as he only showed a yellow card.

Then Watford were on the worse side off the officials once again as half-time approached. Andrea Ranocchia looked to have beaten the offside trap and had beaten Dorus De Vries but the linesman raised his flag. Ranocchia was clearly onside and was frustrated by the decision.

Ranocchia looked to have beaten the offside trap, but the linesman raised his flag

Zoran Tosic then had an early chance in the second half to give Swansea the lead. He recieved the ball on the edge of the box and looked to have caught out Dzhanaev with an early strike but he got back and palmed the ball to safety.

Then Leiva Lucas had a great opportunity to score, but under pressure he miss-hit his shot. A scramble in the six yard box fell to Lucas but his strike fell straight into the keepers hands.

Lucas's strike is poor, as Swansea miss a great opportunity

Toni Kroos then could have given Watford the lead in an end to end game. Kroos's strike from distance hit the bar though and then fell straight back into De Vries's arms to the frustration of the surrounding Watford players.

Then both sides seemed happy with the point, as news broke round elsewhere that both Sheffield United & Leicester were behind. And there wasn't any sort of chance as the game was brought to a close.

Watford have an 8 point gap over 7th placed Middlesborough, whilst the gap for Swansea is 7 points although both sides would like a place in the automatic promotion places if possible.

Swansea will now be without Phil Jagielka for 9 days though, who will now miss the big Shield Semi-Final away to Cardiff aswell as the Sheffield United & Doncaster league games.

Next up for Swansea is a tough game, as they face Sheffield United away from home. With a win needed to give Swansea some ground over the chasing play-off pack.

Phil Jagielka out for 9 days, as he's set to miss the Shield Semi-Final

Post Match Interview

A draw against a strong side like Watford, will you be taking more possitives than neggatives from this result?

Certainly, Watford on their day are the strongest side in the league. Their at the quality of automatic promotion and although we may have though we could of knicked a win the result could of been a lot worse than a draw. We also have to remember how much we've come on since the start of the season, as we were on the back of a 4-0 drubbing to Watford at the start of the season.

Santa Cruz has really hit form since joining you, 5 in 6 now, what is it with you and form striker?

Well we certainly know how to find them. All the strikers are hitting form, Kone, Ilan & Santa Cruz are all on fire with Pereyra scoring when he was needed on Wednesday. Santa Cruz's scoring record is quiet spectacular, he's got real quality and there's a lot of interest in him. Kone looks set for Fulham, so Santa Cruz may be needed more than ever in the next couple of weeks.

You've token a 7 point gap on 7th placed Middlesborough, will this be enough to reach the play-offs?

I've said it all season, that it's going to go right down to the wire. We're certainly in a position where we have the advantage, and none of the teams below us can find some sort of consistancy so aslong as we keep on picking up the points at this rate we should be ok. But consistancy needs to occur, we need to keep on performing at this level, and if we do then we should reach the play-offs come the end of the season.

Last night victory against Barnsley was Aveldano's last

4a2594fb736d7.jpg

Aveldano looking to rejoin his former club

In an interview after last night's game against Barnsley, Parker has announced that Lucas Aveldano has played his last match into a Millwall's shirt before moving back to his old club Racing Club. He said that it was a hard decision for him to sell one of his most consistent players but believes the likes of Nounkeu and Coates will be able to fill in the gap left by the 24 year old Argentine.

I would like to comfirm that we've received a bid for Aveldano and after careful consideration with the player and speaking to other member of our staff, we believe that Aveldano will leaving us after tonight's game against Barnsley. He has said that he has really enjoyed his time here but he found it hard to settle down and feels a little homesick. His family haven't been able to adapt with the climate and I'm really gutted that I'm about to loose one of my more consistent performer. He's been fantastic at the back and he had a fantastic return infront of goal considering he was a defender. Tonight in his last game for the club, he showed the same enthusiasm that he showed when he first signed and we are privilaged to have had a player of his quality in our squad. He has played the most number of games for us and it shows what a great profesional he is. In every game he's been here he'd given it 100% and that's the sort of players the fans pay their money to come and watch. I would like to wish him the best of luck and hopes he has a fantastic career in front of him

So there we have it a bid of around £4.8 million has been accepted and it looks like Aveldano will be going back home. The sale of Aveldano will see Millwall bag a £2 million profit considering they bought the player for a bargain of around 2.7 at the start of the season. So now questions will be raised about who is likely to replace him at the back. The main candidates who are likely to be fighting for the void left by Aveldano are Dany Nounkeu, Audreu Fontas or Seb Coates. Other questions that will be asked is what's going to happen with the money. As a result of all the questions surrounding this transfer, a sky reporter managed to catch up with Parker after their training session and these were the answers given by the man himself.

So Hans. Aveldano has flown over to Racing for a medical and his deal is likely to be concluded by the end of the day. Do you have a replacement lined up or do you have enough depth to cope with his departure?

Yes, he flew over this morning after saying goodbye to his team-mates and he also signed a couple of autograph's for the fans before leaving us. He will be sorely missed but we have to move on and no I'm not going to use the money for a defender I'll keep the money in the bank and wait to see where we need reinforcement. We've already got loads of other defenders like Dany, Audreu and Seb who will be fighting for that position. We've also got the option of bringing Lolo back but think his best position is as a defensive midfielder so we won't be using him at the back.

200909222155_w350.jpg

Dany Nounkeu likely to play against Colchester

From last week there were reports that the club have to sell players to keep the book balanced. What can you tell us about this?

Well of course that's true. We have got a massive squad consisting of over 100 players and we've already had to send a couple on loan to save money on wages so yes some of that money will be used to help us keep the books balanced but I still think we'll have enough to get a quality player in. We'll be likely to get around £5-6 million more in the coming days so that should trim the squad down a bit aswell as giving us the opportunity to buy players who are likely to improve our squad.

Last question before we let you leave. Antoine Griezmann had such a fantastc start to his career but he has been out for a long time. Is he likely to play any games this season?

It's been a shame for the lad. He had such a wonderful start to his career here but since suffering that injury against Brentford back at the start of March he's been unable to train with the rest of the team and the doctors have comfirmed that he'll be available in around four weeks time so we will have him fit and ready for the run in. He could be a crucial player for us in the future and I'm absolutely certain he'll come back with a bang.

Former Bayern Duo Give Portsmouth Vital Win

Aston Villa 0 - 2 Portsmouth

Tymoschuk 43

Van Bommel 85

Goals from former Bayern duo, Tymoschuk and Van Bommel gave Portsmouth a vital 3 points in their fight against relegation. The result means that Pompey are still 5 points off 17th place West Ham,after their 4-1 thumping of Wolves, but with only 3 points seperating 12th place Wigan from West Ham it seems no one in the bottom half of the table is safe.

mvb01.jpg

Van Bommel scores on his debut to win game for Pompey

The game started slowly with little action inside the first 20 minutes and only a booking for Villa defender Gorlitz for a 50/50 ball was an event worth talking about. Mali striker Kanoute had a great chance to score on his debut on the 23rd minute but the former West Ham striker somehow missed an easy tap in to keep the score level. The home side then had a great chance to open the scoring after some great footwork from Tiago opened up some shooting space but his shot failed to hit the target. As the half progressed the away side looked more likely to score and on the 34th minute Jarolim seemed destined to score but he mis hit his volley. Then, only two minutes from half time, a great through ball by Van Bommel left Tymoschuk with only the keeper to beat and he cooly slid it past the keeper to send the away fans wild.

ksc_goerlitz_345.jpg

Gorlitz was given an early bath after his vicious tackle

However just after the break Aston Villa almost instantly responded but after a great run by Babel, Popmey defender Grygera made a fine last ditch tackle before hoofing it away. Then with 68 minutes played, there was a moment of controversy when Villa player Gorlitz was shown a straight red after he ploughed into Kanoute. Kanoute was again involved in more controversy a minute later when he was deemed to have dived in the box and was given a yellow card. Although with one man less, Villa pressed for the equalizer. Milito popped up after Pompey defenders dithered with the ball but blasted wide. 2 minutes later the same man had Friedel scrambling after a vicious 25 yard effort. However the game was put to bed 5 minutes from time when Van Bommel hit a powerful 15 shot into the top right hand corner. It finished here, Aston Villa 0, Portsmouth 2.
