Re: English Championship 5579 -Match Report/Transfer Gossip Thread

Ipswich Town 1 - 1 Swansea City

11, Agbonlahor

51, Ademi

The Big Picture

Agbonlahor finds the net, but it's not enough for Swansea to pick up three points as they couldn't take there chances

Swansea City picked up there fifth draw on the trot, as they were left frustrated despite dominating in there match at Portman Road away to Ipswich Town as they were left frustrated with amount of chances they wasted in a game they really should have won. Swansea showed there dominance throughout the match, but despite scoring early on Ipswich levelled just after the break and a series of late chances were missed as Swansea were certainly dissapointed to have not got all three points from the match. They have overtaken South Wales rival Cardiff City though, moving up to 16th ahead of a tough clash on Wednesday at home to Hull City. Following this they face Hartlepool in the Shield though, as the second sting will be tested out. New boy Matthew Ethrington was straight into the starting line up, ahead of Kevin Doyle as he was deployed on the right wing as a player who was more likely to get balls into the box then Gabriel Agbonlahor who was previously played on the right. Agbonlahor was moved into the centre alongside Moussa Dembele in just Dembele's second appearance for the club. Lee Cattermole's late goal on Wednesday was enough to put him in the starting line-up ahead of Dean Whitehead and Jack Wilshere who will both push him for a starting place, in what is a competitive position with plenty of starting quality players able to play alongside Mikel Arteta.

Matthew Ethrington was brought into the Swansea starting line-up for his debut in place of Kevin Doyle

Valter Birsa had the first effort for the home side early on, although it didn't lead to much with Samir Handanovic alert to the danger. Birsa beat Aurelio in the air to header the ball towards goal, but Handanovic dived to his right and clutched the ball to his chest preventing the follow up. But soon after and it was Swansea City who took the lead, with Gabriel Agbonlahor proving his quality against an inexperienced defence. Agbonlahor used his sheer pace to run onto a through ball and thumped the ball into the top hand corner with style and precision for his 2nd goal of the season, following a goal in Swansea's draw with Sheffield United at Brammal Lane in the first of the run of four consecutive draws going into the game. Nicolas Gaitan was a real danger for Swansea last season, scoring on plenty of occasions for both Ipswich and Coventry against Swansea and he came close to equalising mid-way through the first half. Gaitan recieved the ball on the edge of the box and his curling effort was very close to sneaking in at the far post but the ball just went wide of the target. Matthew Ethrington was then cursing his finish on the half hour mark, as he recieved the ball on the right in a shooting opportunity, but a poor finish let him down as he missed the target narrowly in a position where he really should be hitting the target at the very least. Nicolas Gaitan then had an opportunity just before half time, with a drilled effort looking like it would fly into equalise for Ipswich, but Samir Handanovic dived down tremendously to make a superb save.

Gabriel Agbonlahor gives Swansea the first half lead with his second goal of the season

Moussa Dembele came within inches of scoring in the first chance of the second half in what would have been his first goal at the club since joining in exchange for Eidur Gudjohnsen. Dembele fired in an effort from inside the box, but it was cleared off the line by the defender to safety, with Dembele very unlucky not to have doubled Swansea's lead. Just four minutes later and Ipswich Town were level completely against the run of play, as Swansea were left kicking themselves for not capatalising on there earlier chances and giving themselves a clear advantage on the match. After some good footwork Arijan Ademi slotted the ball narrowly past Samir Handanovic for his first goal since joining the Tractor Boys last season. Radford didn't spare any time before letting his players know that he wanted another goal, and Ryan Giggs came close soon after. Matthew Ethrington's additional crosses from the right were an extra asset for Swansea, and a cross towards Ryan Giggs left Giggs able to get a header in to try and find the net but he didn't connect with his header well as it looped up and found the roof of the net. Jack Wilshere was brought on for Lee Cattermole on the hour, making his first league appearance since joining the club, as Swansea looked to go more offensive and Ryan Giggs came very close to scoring soon after with his curling strike going just wide of the post. Then Giggs came close soon after, as his volley towards goal crashed against the post, as he was so unlucky not to find the net. That turned out to be the final effort of the game, as Swansea just couldn't take there chances at the end of the game which would have won them the game.

Ryan Giggs comes close late on, but not even the captain could find the net as Swansea are left to settle for a point

The point is certainly frustrating for Swansea City, as they were up against a very inexperienced side and a side that really shouldn't have been any match for the Swansea City squad. For large parts of the game they weren't a match for Swansea but Giggs and Dembele were very unlucky not to find the net, and Swansea just couldn't find a second goal to show there dominance on the game on the scoreboard meaning that they were left to go out of the game having to settle for a point. They've been left an injury blow aswell, as Jack Wilshere picked up an injury after being brought on for Lee Cattermole. The young English future star, on loan from Arsenal played well before his injury and also played very well in the 1st round of the FA Cup as he scored Swansea's goal in the penalties win over Cardiff, but there going to have to put up without him for three weeks which is frustrating for Swansea who were playing to deploy him in the next few matches. But Swansea City continue to climb up the table, moving up to 16th above rivals Cardiff City and are starting to catch teams above them, despite failing to win in there last seven but they have another tough match on Wednesday as Swansea face Hull City. Hull are doing very well towards the very top of the divison, and this will be the second hardest game in Swansea's season so far, second to Aston Villa away in which Swansea picked up a very respectable 0-0 draw, and Swansea will certainly be happy with a 6th consecutive draw if that's the result that they pick up.

Luke Daniels Becomes Swansea's New Back-Up Goalkeeper

Luke Daniels joins Swansea as a replacement for Ben Alnwick

Swansea City have announced the £660,000 capture of young English goalkeeper Luke Daniels, as they prepare for the exit of current second choice goalkeeper Ben Alnwick, who is expected to leave the club in the not too distant future. Swansea City boss Aidan Radford has always been a fan of Daniels, who's impressed at numerous English clubs in the lower leagues on loan spells there and Radford believes he can eventually break through to become a quality English keeper. Daniels has been at Villareal as a back up goalkeeper looking to break through, season April when his three months spell at Tranmere ended as they looked for a more experienced goalkeeper. Daniels played 17 times in Divison 3 before leaving Tranmere and he's being looking to break back into English football ever since, but as time moved on teams lost interest in him as he failed to get a look in at Villareal. He has finally moved back into English football though, with Swansea City taking a gamble on him as they feel he's more then suitable as the back up goalkeeper replacement of Ben Alnwick. Alnwick joined Swansea in September, in a deal that saw previous back-up goalkeeper Marwin Hitz leave the club in exchange. Alnwick never featured for Swansea though, with Samir Handanovic remaining fit and unsuspended in Alwnick's three month stay at Swansea. Daniels is a year younger then Alnwick, and Radford feels he's a better long term investment then Alnwick as he feels he is a better goalkeeper on the whole. Radford's been a fan of him since his superb spell at Shrewsbury, capped off with him making some great in a penalty shoot out that took Shrewsbury to a Divison 4 play-off final. Since then Daniels had a succesfull loan spell at Tranmere, followed by a loan spell at Charlton which saw him fail to pick up an appearance. But nethertheless Radford feels it'll be a good investment, and that £660,000 will look like a bargain in two or three seasons.

The Brian Lions Sponsored FA Cup

FA Cup Checkups - Round 2

It's the second round of the FA Cup, with a lot of teams playing in the competition for the first time since the turn of the season due to 1st round bye's. There's no bye's in the 2nd round though, and any sort of win from anyone tonight, taking them to the 3rd round will start to get people thinking about the later stages of the competition, as although defeat will get people concentrated on the league, everybody enjoys a good cup run.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Liverpool LIVE ON BBC1 - COVERAGE STARTS AT 19:30

  • There's a lot of history between these two clubs, and especially on this ground. Yes when 21 years and 8 months ago, the Hillsborough disaster occured. Sheffield Wednesday wasn't involved in the fixture, as it was infact an FA Cup Semi-Final between Leeds and Nottingham Forest but nethertheless it'll be an emotional day for everyone associated with Liverpool. They go to Hillsbrough for the first time in EC5579, and this will be an interesting game indeed.

Prediction: 0-3

Manchester City vs Millwall LIVE ON SKYSPORTS1 - COVERAGE STARTS AT 19:30

  • The force of Manchester City will be feeling confident after a draw to lower opposition, but Millwall are not to be underestimated as they can give anyone a run for there money. They've been inconsistant lately though, and i do think that with home advantage it should be a straight forward win for Manchester City's recentley improved second string.

Prediction: 3-1

Derby County vs Manchester United - LIVE ON BBC2 - COVERAGE STARTS AT 19:30

  • After scraping through on penalties in the last round against Tranmere, Manchester United face lower league opposition once again, this time in Divison 2 Derby. Derby have been inconsistant, but Manchester United have been poor. But i think that Derby do have a chance of winning the game.

Prediction: 1-1 (Derby to win on penalties)

Stockport County vs Arsenal LIVE ON SKYSPORTS2 - COVERAGE STARTS AT 19:30

  • Stockport have improved a lot since Elliot Hilton took over the club recentley, but now he has a real test as he's left to face Arsenal in the cup. Hilton's youthful side have a real task if there going to beat a very strong solid Arsenal side, and although i'd like a big upset to occur here, i can't see it happening.

Prediction: 0-2

Portsmouth vs Tottenham Hotspurs

  • These two sides met on Saturday, and Portsmouth won on that occasion, but in the Cup everything can change. It's quiet typical for a side to win a game in the league, only to loose to the same oppositon a couple of days later and i can see that being the case in this Divsion 1 clash.

Prediction: 1-2

Blackburn Rovers vs Middlesbrough

  • Blackburn have gotten off to a great start to there Divison 1 campaign, but Middlesbrough have enjoyed previous success in this competition as they finished runners up back in Season 1. Middlesbrough are too inconistant in Divison 2, and i don't think they can get a result against a strong Blackburn side.

Prediction: 2-0

Hull City vs Everton

  • It's an interesting fixture at the KC Stadium, Hull are doing well for themselves in Divison 2 and they look like they can push for promotion. But Everton are happily going along with there buisness in Divison 1, and are a very strong side. I can see an Fa Cup upset happening here, and i do think that despite being lower league oppositon Hull City can progress through to the next round.

Prediction: 1-0

Yeovil Town vs Newcastle United

  • Sean Fitzpatrick has worked wonders since taking over Yeovil, and he's got a big cup tie as his Yeovil await the visit of Divison 1 Newcastle United. I personally think that Yeovil have enough to win the game narrowly, and cause one of the upsets of the 2nd round.

Prediction: 2-0

Not Forgetting:

Colchester United 1 - 2 Charlton Athletic

Coventry City 3 - 0 Bury

Doncaster Rovers 1 - 1 Gillingham (Gillingham to win on penalties)

Crewe Alexandra 2 - 3 Bolton Wanderers

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 - 1 Preston North End

Sunderland 2 - 0 Watford

Milton Keynes Dons 0 - 1 Wycombe Wanderers

Shrewsbury Town 2 - 1 Plymouth Argyle

Crystal Palace 4 - 1 Leyton Orient

Southend United 2 - 1 Reading

Bristol City 2 - 0 Walsall

Torquay United 1 - 2 Peterborough United

Birmingham City 0 - 0 Dagenham & Redbridge (Dagenham to win on penalties)

Bradford City 1 - 1 Southampton (Southampton to win on penalties)

Burnley 0 - 1 Leeds United

Norwich City 1 - 1 Walsall (Norwich to win of penalties)

Swansea City 2 - 1 Hartlepool United

Nottingham Forest 2 - 1 Swindon Town

Brentford 3 - 4 Stoke City

Burton Albion 1 - 4 Barnsley

Fulham 2 - 0 Leicester City

West Bromwich Albion 2 - 2 Shorpe United (WBA to win on penalties)

West Ham United 1 - 3 Bristol Rovers

Northampton Town 0 - 1 Blackpool

Radford Looking Forward To 100th Game In Charge

Radford's looking forward to his 100th game in charge of Swansea, as they place Hartlepool in the 2nd round of the cup tonight

Swansea City boss Aidan Radford prepares for his 100th game in charge of his beloved Swansea City as they face Hartlepool United in the 2nd round of the English Cup at the Liberty Stadium tonight. Radford's in his third season, and almost 11 months into the job at Swansea and a lot has happened already in what is already being called the start of an era at the club. Radford took over with a goal to eventually help Swansea into Divison 1, and that remains the aim but a lot's happened in between. Back in Season 1, Swansea reached the play-offs, but fell out of the play-offs to Coventry but despite that they did manage some success as they reached the English Shield Final, with a trip to Wembley and some serious cash being earned from that success. Last season wasn't good for Swansea and Radfords reign at the club as they only managed to stay in the Divison on the final day of the season, but nethertheless Radford's still at the club and enjoying his time at his homeclub. He takes over his 100th game in charge at the club tonight, and he's hoping it's the first of many century's of games in charge of Swansea. They face Hartlepool in the 2nd round of the cup in his 100th game in charge as they look to progress to the next round of the competition against lower oppositon. The Monkey Hangers second squad are as strong as Swansea's though, and it'll be a hard task for Swnsea but there hoping that they can progress to the next round of the competition. The stars of the squad involve the likes of Kevin Doyle, Michael Turner, Dean Whitehead and Samir Handanovic whilst there's unlikely to be any sort of weakness in the squad unlike the first round of the competition with two youngsters left to fill in the centre defensive partnership. Adam Matthews is expected to be the only young player involved in the fixture, with Radford hoping to get a win in his 100th game in charge of the club.

Jinx Inx LTD Champions League

Group Stages: Turn 5

Last week's fixtures turned out to be a mix of results some dissapointing and others brilliant. Manchester United defeated Zenit by three goals to nill which put's Zenit at the bottom of group A with no points and their hopes of getting to the knockout stages shattered. Possibly the biggest suprise last week was Manchester City winning their game against Marseillie, they may still be bottom of the group but the gap from the top is very small. Liverpool continued their poor run with a draw at Juventus and Portsmouth had a shock defeat to Valencia which will put them on their tip-toes. Here's this weeks fixture's:

Group A, FC Porto vs Manchester United

This should turn out to be a promising fixture with both clubs drawing on points and desperate to overtake Italian giants, Milan at the top of the group. United will struggle upfront with Rooney out with bruised ribs and top goalscorer Adebayor not fit to play but it seems things are starting to turn for the good at Old Trafford as they recored back to back wins in the leagie and cup. Porto however will be keen to come back from last weeks defeat to Milan.

Prediction: FC Porto 1-2 Manchester United

Group B, Villarreal vs Manchester City

Well City certainly shocked everybody last week recording their first win in the competition and they'll be looking to continue taking the three points as they face Spanish side Villarreal who are in second place in the group. Last time these sides came up against each other City lost by one goal but with recent wins against Birmingham and Everton in the league they will be looking for a win this time around.

Prediction: Villarreal 1-1 Manchester City

Group C, Napoli vs Liverpool

Liverpool are still on the hunt for their first win in this competition after another draw with Juventus last week which left them at the bottom of their group and a loss to Sheffield United yesterday certainly won't boost their confidence. Nothing could seperate these two sides last time but the competition is hotting up and neither team in a qualifying position we should expect to see a far few goals tonight.

Prediction: Napoli 2-3 Liverpool

Group D, Bordeaux vs Portsmouth

Portsmouth may have lost last week but they will be looking to come back fighting against French side Bordeaux tonight. Bordeaux find themselves at the bottom of group D with just one point and they'll certainly struggle tonight. Last time these two sides met Pompey eased past with three gaols too one and i'm sure manager Coll will be looking for a similar performance.

Prediction: Bordaeux 0-2 Portsmouth

Ebanks-Blake Capture Strengthens Swansea Attack

Ebanks-Blake is an extra option in Swansea's attack, as he joins from Valencia

Swansea City have completed the signing of striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, adding to the strike force as an extra striker if an extra striker is needed over the course of the season. He joins Moussa Dembele, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Kevin Doyle & Michael Chopra as the strikers at the club and he'll compete with the likes of Kevin Doyle & Michael Chopra for some sub appearances and some cup team football. Chopra and Doyle failed to make a goalscoring impact in Swansea's 1-0 home defeat to Hartlepool in Radford's 100th game in charge in the 2nd round of the English Cup, so there's a possibility that Sylvan Ebanks-Blake can come into the English Shield team next Monday to make an impact. Ebanks-Blake joins the club in a swap deal for £327,000 along with Antonio German & Ben Alnwick. Ben Alnwick was expected to leave the club regardless of the swap deal to bring Ebanks-Blake to the club, with Luke Daniels joining the club in the last week to replace him as the second choice goalkeeper at Swansea City. He could have possibly joined AFC Bournemouth or Rotherham with bids in from both sides for Alnwick to join the club. Antonio German has also left the club as part of the deal, with him being one of the players that Radford was happy to let go since announcing a major sale at Swansea, and he leaves the club as he hopes for more first team opportunites out in Spain. Ebanks-Blake will be the main target man of the five players, but he can also offer goals with plenty at his time at Wolves. He's been waiting a long time to get that move back to English football, having the left Wolves with just one game to his name at the start of Season 1. Since then he's had spells at Dynamo Kiev, Ajax, Galatasaray SK, Bordeaux & Valencia, but hasn't had regular football at any one of the clubs that he's played for and has often had to settle for the odd cup appearance so he's delighted to join Swansea where he's likely to get some first team football over the course of the season. It wont be a straight forward thing, and he may well be left to go out on loan in time but he's certain to get more football. He's an extra option to the attack, and more of a luxury option then anything else and Radford needs to work out how he's going to fit him into the side with plenty of strong players already not getting enough football and he certainly needs to watch some players picking up some concerns about there time at the club. If this does happen, then players might have to be sold, but Radfords been told by Brydon that he's confident of this not occuring, as he believes that he can manage the squad so that everyone's happy.

The club manager Avram Grant has breifly spoken on his new arrivals "I am very happpy to welcome both players to the club and believe both players have what it takes to cemment a place in the first team.We really needed that little extra quailty and both of them are very creative footballers with a high pedegree and l cant wait to see them contribute to the team".

Financial Concerns

The club have faced some critisisuim of the new signing as the club are still losing 300k a week and some fans and the press believe the extra wages could bankrupt the club, but the club can assure you that once both new signings have got past the tranfer bans 2-3 players will have to leave the club to reduce the wage bill.It is not appearent who these players are at present, but over the next few weeks Avram will be watching all the players and how they perform and along with his coaching staff make some hard decision on which players he could lose out the squad.

Re: English Championship 5579 - Match Report/Transfer Thread

Well it's that magic 10th game isn't it, after tonight the league table matters and the league starts to form after everyone starts to settle in. It's another night of some great games, as ever, and there'll certainly be some enterating games, with a couple of shock results possible along the way. Enjoy reading, and for everyone involved good luck tonight.

Reading vs Derby County

Positions: 1st vs 12th

  • Reading are on the back of what was the toughest game of there season, as they face Hull City at the KC Stadium in what remains currently as the biggest game of the Championship season. They got a strong point from the match, and now have a nicer run of the games
  • Tonight they face Derby County, a side that started off the season terribly but have had some decent form since and it wont be too easy for Reading. But i do think that Reading will win the game.

Prediction: 2-0

Swansea City vs Hull City

Positions: 16th vs 2nd

  • Swansea are on the back of five straight draws, as they've managed to cut out any loosing ways. But they do need to win some games, this is one of the hardest games of the season though and a draw will certainly satisfy the manager.
  • Hull are on the back of a strong draw against Reading, but haven't been doing to well recentley so there going to be focused on getting all three points from the trip to South Wales.

Prediction: 1-3

Watford vs Coventry City

Positions: 20th vs 3rd

  • Sheffield United's recent form have meant that Watford have slipped to bottom of the league, they certainly wont want to stay there so they need to do well from the game.
  • Coventry City have been doing very well recentley, and are now level on points with Hull City. They'll look to push them for an automatic promotion spot at this stage, and i don't there'll be much difficulty in them picking up all three points.

Prediction: 0-2

Barnsley vs Queens Park Rangers

Positions: 4th vs 6th

  • Queens Park Rangers have moved from the bottom half of the table, all the way to the play-offs. Barnsley are staying strong in the play-offs aswell though, and it'll be a tough fixture for both sides. It'll be a superb win for either side if they do manage to pick up all three points, but i don't think that either side will beable to pick the win that they need, and i think the game will end up as a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

Peterborough United vs Millwall

Positions: 5th vs 11th

  • Peterborough are doing very well for themselves in Divison 2 and are in there best position under the management of Dan Tomlins. Despite Millwall managing to knock out the reigning FA Cup Champions Manchester City of the FA Cup on Monday, in the league Peterborough are the form side.

Prediction: 2-0

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Aston Villa

Positions: 15th vs 7th

  • Brighton are slowly picking up the points, despite not picking up that many wins but face a very tough fixture tonight as they face Aston Villa at home in what will be a very big game for them having come up from Divison 3. Although Brighton will give them a game, and certainly will show them that they can match them, i think it'll be Aston Villa who are most likely to come out of the game with an away win.

Prediction: 0-1

Bristol City vs Crystal Palace LIVE ON SKYSPORTS1 - COVERAGE STARTS AT 19:30

Positions: 8th vs 13th

  • In the televised game of the day, Bristol City meet Crystal Palace at Ashton Gate. It will be an insteresting game indeed, both managers are strong tactically and it will be intereseting to see who gets the better of the game. In all honesty this is another game which i just can't see anything seperating the two sides, so i'm going to have to predict a draw as the outcome.

Prediction: 3-3

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Middlesbrough

Positions: 10th vs 9th

  • There's very little seperating the two sides, and they are two very similar sides and it will be a tight game. But Middlesbrough have been doing very well, and are the form side and despite being away from home i think that they are the side that are going to come out of the game with the win and a crucial three points.

Prediction: 2-3

Shrewsbury Town vs Sheffield United

Positions: 14th vs 19th

  • Sheffield United have got themselves off the bottom of the table, as there on the back with some decent results but they face a tough test against Shrewsbury away from home. Shrewsbury are always a strong outfit, and i think that with home advantage that they can pick up three points and get themselves back into a strong league position.

Prediction: 2-1

Cardiff City vs Ipswich Town

Positions: 17th vs 18th

  • Cardiff have spent sometime without a win, but they've got a great chance to get a win as they face Ipswich at home. Ipswich did very well to pick up a point at home to Swansea, but away from home to Cardiff is another tough test. I can't see Ipswich getting anything from the result, and Cardiff should pick up what will be a crucial three points.

Prediction: 1-0

Manchester United vs Black Burn Rovers

League Positions = 12th vs 1st

Manchester United find themselves lingering in mid table and a big distance off the top of the table. Is their title defence all over alredy? They must win tonight you feel, msut! They'll be 3 points even further behind if they are beaten tonight by suprise package Black burn!

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

League Positions = 10th vs 2nd

Spurs travel to Everton tonight as they bid to keep up the pace with Black Burn at the top of the table. Spurs have been very impressive so far this season, but tonight could easily provide a stumbling block!

Liverpool vs Blackpool

Leicester City vs Wigan Athletic

League Positions = 16th vs 19th

Lastly, we see Matty's Leicester side take on Wigan in a relegation based battle. Could a winner in this game prove decisive in the end of season's bottom 3 outlook? This week we caught up with Matty from leicester on Premier life:

Q: Well its been 9 games here at Leicester in your debut to the top flight. Do you feel at home?

Yes i feel at home, With the way were playing and going at teams i definitely think that we belong in the premier league

Q: Its a different ball game for a team just been promoted from the Championship division. Do you feel the more "need to defend" in this league, compared to the attacking style needed to do well in the Championship?

you always have to remember what league your playing in as there are much better players on display but were not playing any different from how we played in the championship. we always go out to win the game as playing for a draw is always a dangerous game.

Q: Who'se the key player to any success here at Leicester this season?

Most definitely hulk, He's been an absolute machine for us this season, If we didn't have him this season i think we would most definitely be in the bottom three.

Q: What would be a successful league table finish this season?

In our first season i would say a mid table finish would be more than acceptable.

Q: How important is it the fans stay with you for the whole season, through good and bad?

It's extremely important, The fans are the heartbeat of the club. There very aware that they've got to take the rough with the smooth, They had the smooth last season so they are prepared for the rough that may be coming there way this season.

Q: Finally, tonight you take on Wigan. They sit in 19th - just where you dont want to be at the end of the season. Are you worried about tonights match?

I worry about every game because none are easy, they'll be fighting for there lives tonight and our players are very aware of that.

Well I like the way Matt's handling things at the minute, and theyve certainly got a good shot of surviving relegation this season. Hulk is important, and if they keep him lit then theres no reason why they should go down in my opinion. But... tonights pretty important, and Wigan will be aware too.

Re: English Championship 5579 -Match Report/Transfer Gossip Thread

Swansea City 1 - 1 Hull City

11, King

33, Perotti

The Big Picture

Ledley King's first Swansea goal helps Swansea to a point against the superstars of Hull City

Swansea City have picked up a very strong point, against one of the strongest - if not the strongest side in the divison in Hull City. This happens to be the sixth league draw on the bounce, following draws to Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Millwall & Ipswich Town as they're now just two games away from breaking there unbeaten run, achieved back in Season 1. The record was held between the 6th and 27th of February as Swansea were unbeaten in 7 games, in probably the strongest period of Radford's reign, and Radford is looking to beat it. They need to avoid defeat away to Derby County on Saturday and at home to Middlesbrough a week today to break the record. They haven't been up to standard though, and Radford knows that they needed to win at least one of the six games to give them a boost, rather then keeping at the same consistant but ambitionless pace. This means that they do suffer knock backs in there league position and that's what's happened tonight, as they've dropped back from 16th to 18th into the relegation zone despite picking up a strong point with Cardiff City, Sheffield United & Watford all picking up victories. The same team was kept by Swansea, with Ethrington remaining on the right side of attack and Lee Cattermole staying in the midfield alongside Mikel Arteta but it was the oppositon line-up that was most interesting. The stars of the squad were all out there in the Hull starting line-up, with Lucio, Darren Fletcher and Pepe Reina all starting for Hull.

Lucio was among the Hull City stars in the starting line up, making them one of the promotion favourites in the divison

Pepe Reina showed Swansea early on that he might be in for one of those spectacular performances he was in the last time he played at the Liberty Stadium, he kept a clean sheet as he made numerous saves to show the Swansea fans that they don't want to see much of him. He was in the starting line-up for the game and early on made a good save as Moussa Dembele's header was covered by Reina and comfortably saved by the Spanish goalkeeper. But soon later Reina was beaten, Swansea took the lead as Ledley King found his first goal for the Swans since joining the club at the start of the season. He's played in every single game this season for Swansea, and has consistantly performed well, and his goal was well recieved as he lost his man from the corner and thumped the ball in on the volley under Reina at the first time of asking. Ryan Giggs came close to doubling Swansea's lead soon after, with Giggs shooting from range but his effort went wide of the target. Lee Cattermole's slip cost Swansea soon after as Hull City managed to find an equaliser 10 minutes before the break. Cattermole slipped on the cold surface, allowing Diego Perotti to find space and has was able to run through the gap and past Carlos Cuellar before thumping the ball into the goal. This was Perotti's first goal for Hull City since joining from West Brom, and it was a well deserved one with Perotti certainly doing well to find a goal from a simple slip. Samir Handanovic then had to make a good save to make sure Swansea went into half-time level, a great move from Hull City soon found Diego Perotti able to **** a ball over the defence to play Anderson through but his effort was met with a strong save from Handanovic.

Ledley King celebrates his goal, but the scores are level at half-time after a Diego Perotti equaliser

Diego Perotti then almost made more impact on the game, having equalised late on in the first half. He had the first opportunity of the half, as he went through one-on-one with Samir Handanovic and expertley chipped the ball over Handanovic and just as it looked like it was going to role into the net untill Ledley King raced back on the line and cleared the ball to safety to keep Swansea level. Swansea had there first chance of the second half soon after, Ryan Giggs managing to whip a great cross into the box only for Matthew Ethrington to be unable to outjump his marker to make contact with the cross. Luis Anderson then came very close to scoring half an hour before the end, Anderson turned past Mikel Arteta and blasted his shot at goal but Samir Handanovic dived down to make a great stop. Gabriel Agbonlahor was left fuming at strike partner Moussa Dembele as his flick setup the attack putting Dembele in a great position only for Dembele to fluff his strike wide of the target. Mikel Arteta came close from range soon after, he looked to try and make an impact on the game with a shot from distance and it almost paid off but in the end his effort went over the bar. But late on there was only one opportunity and that fell to star man Lucio, but he lacked the final touch as his shot didn't even trouble Samir Handanovic, meaning that the game ended level.

Moussa Dembele missed one of only a couple second half opportunities, as the game ended level

It's a decent point indeed, with Swansea are certainly happy with against a Hull City side that will certainly be pushing for promotion and a Hull City side that have been performing very well under the management of recentley appointed boss Ian Eltringham. Since Eltringham has token over the club, they've gone from a side that are pushing for a play-off places, to a side that will be pushing for promotion. The likes of Lucio, Darren Fletcher & Pepe Reina are world class players who all feel confident that Hull will go up, so for Swansea to get a point at home to them, is certainly a possitive result. Despite getting a point against a very strong Hull City side, Swansea have dropped down from 16th to 18th and into the relegation zone. Cardiff City, Watford & Sheffield United all managed to win there matches, meaning Swansea have slipped down into the relegation zone with them currently being unable to win matches. Next up for Swansea City is a game they'll look to win, to ease the pressure that lies at being towards the bottom of the table. They face Derby County at Pride Park, and although Derby have been doing well recentley, Swansea will feel this is certainly a winable game and they will go into the game with the intent to get all three points.

Re: English Championship 5579 -Match Report/Transfer Gossip Thread

Swansea Narrowly Miss Out On Ferdinand Signing

Swansea have missed out on the signing of Rio Ferdinand, as he's on his way to complete a move to Everton

Swansea City have missed out on signing what would have been an inconic signing in England skipper Rio Ferdinand, who is on his way to Merseyside to complete a move to Everton. Similar to the signing of Ryan Giggs last season, this would have been a similar sort of signing and made a similar sort of impact to the Swansea side, but the deal involving Carlos Cuellar wasn't going to be good enough to beat Everton's bid which means that Rio Ferdinand is on his way to join Everton in a swap deal. Ferdinand left Manchester United at the very start of Season 1 in a swap deal that saw Georgio Chiellini join the Red Devils, with Ferdinand failing to make even a single appearance for Manchester United in the opening Season, and has since had to try and make his way in European Football away from Manchester United and England. He's had three spells at Real Madrid, aswell as spells at Barcelona and Juventus but has been waiting to get back into life in English Football for sometime, he's been trying to push a move through and eventually he looks likely to return to England with Everton as he's set to complete a medical before tommorow's game away to Bolton Wanderers in what will be a tough game for the Toffee's. Everton have been doing well recentley, and after a strong start to the season they are currently in 7th place so far this season. They'll certainly be happy with that but a high profile signing like Rio Ferdinand will certainly boost the whole morale at the club as they look to push on from 7th up to the very top of the divison and a title challenge. It never looked like Swansea were going to sign a name such as Rio Ferdinand, despite being only one of two bidders in the end who looked to sign him, and they thought that they were perhaps spending too much of there current budget on a player that would occupy more of the budget with wages. So they've decided to leave him to Everton, as they look at other options and it is possible that before Wednesday's game at home to Middlesbrough that they'll have brought a new defender into the club to complete the signing of a quality defender in place of Carlos Cuellar. Ferdinand was likely to take up a big wage bill, currently on a massive £73,600 a week at Real Madrid, and with Swansea already in difficulty financially, and having a large wage bill already the addition of Ferdinand's wages is something they probably couldn't afford. Carlos Cuellar is currently on £44,850 a week, and although that's expected to be reduced by some margin in the close future, that's still a long way under the wage of Rio Ferdinand and that extra cost would be hard for Swansea to finance. If they are going to replace Carlos Cuellar, whilst still bringing in a big defender to the club, they need to replace him with a defender that wouldn't occupy the wages that someone like Rio Ferdinand does. The replacements they have in line for Cuellar, other then Ferdinand are on a lot less wages then the England skipper and are much more affordable options. Although they feel that signing Ferdinand would have been a major capture, which it would have been, there are potentially a lot more good defenders they can bring into Swansea that are so much more financially affordable. And that has to be an important factor for a club like Swansea, who are one of a big number of clubs that do suffer with a problem in financial terms. There main priority at the moment is to get a strong result and a strong performance away to Derby County, where Swansea will hope to get a win but at the minimum they need to avoid defeat and keep up there undefeated run.

Re: English Championship 5579 - Match Report/Transfer Thread

10 games have now been played, and whilst the sides at the top of the divison will have some confidence to stay in that sort of position throughout the season, the sides of the bottom wont let double figures get to there minds as they still have higher ambitions. As ever there's some good fixtures and some highly enjoyable one's in the 10 games we have lined up for you.

Middlesbrough vs Reading

Positions: 7th vs 1st

  • Middlesbrough go into the game on the back of some recent form, as they look more and more like a play-off worthy side after every match, but they've got a very difficult game tonight as they host the league leaders Reading.
  • Reading have already got a four point lead at the top of the table, and they don't look like slowing down in the near future, with the form they've been on so far this season they'll go into the game looking for a win and i think that they'll get those three points.

Prediction: 1-2

Hull City vs Cardiff City

Positions: 2nd vs 15th

  • Hull have been picking up some points recentley, but far from the amount they were at the very start of the season. There edging closer and closer away from Reading and they do need to pick up some more wins if there going to stay within reach of them.
  • Hull's oponents tonight are Cardiff City, who after a run of bad defeats ended it with a win over Ipswich Town. This has lifted them up the table slightly and givent them some confidence, but against Hull at the KC Stadium i don't think they can get something from the game.

Prediction: 1-0

Sheffield United vs Coventry City

Positions: 16th vs 3rd

  • Had Coventry not slipped up badly away to Watford on Wednesday then they'd currently be ahead of Hull and occupying a position in the automatic promotion places. But they did and it means they go into the game on the back of a defeat.
  • Sheffield United have been doing very well recentley and have suddenly turned themselves from just two points and being bottom of the league, a few games ago into nine points and out of the relegation zone. I think after some very strong performances in recent weeks, Sheffield United can pick up another three points.

Prediction: 3-1

Barnsley vs Watford

Positions: 4th vs 17th

  • This will be a very interesting game, as you see just what Watford side turns up. You never what your getting from them, will they be the side that beat Coventry & Bristol City or will they be the side that can't buy a win the majority of the time. I can't see Watford winning again, as they just haven't showed that sort of consistancy so far this season, so i'm going to go for a Barnsley win.

Prediction: 2-0

Ipswich Town vs Peterborough United

Positions: 20th vs 5th

  • This is fairly straight forward to call, with Ipswich never being in worse form, whilst Peterborough have never been better. I can only see Peterborough winning this match, and doing so will certainly mount pressure on the sides above them as they could be pushing for an automatic promotion spot at this stage if results go there way elsewhere tonight.

Prediction: 1-4

Aston Villa vs Bristol City

Positions: 6th vs 9th

  • I'd say that this game will probably be the most entertaining game of the night. Both sides are currently looking like play-off or promotion contenders, and although Aston Villa are currently above Bristol City it's only by two points and a win for the Robins tonight will take them above Aston Villa. I think that althoug the game will be full of goals, i think both sides will cancel themselves out, and i can see a point going to either manager.

Prediction: 3-3

Queens Park Rangers vs Wolverhampton Wanderers LIVE ON BBC2 - COVERAGE STARTS AT 19:30

Positions: 8th vs 11th

  • The televised game of the day see's Queens Park Rangers play Wolverhampton Wanderers at Loftus Road. There's very little seperating the two sides so far this season and they both look like possible play-off contenders. I can a suprise victory lurking in the waiting though, in favour of Wolves.

Prediction: 1-2

Millwall vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Positions: 10th vs 19th

  • Millwall have had a couple of recent signings in the likes of Kuzmanovic to boost there first team as there side looks a lot fresher then it has been at earlier stages of the season. I can see them taking all three points against a Brighton side that will be looking to get some wins sooner or later to take themselves away from what could be a dangerous position for them later on in the season if they remain in there current position.

Prediction: 2-1

Crystal Palace vs Shrewsbury Town

Positions: 12th vs 14th

  • Two of the newcomers divison that have settled to life slightly better at Divison 2 level meet at Selhurst Park tonight. There's not that much between the two sides on any sort of basis, and i can't really see either side having enough domination on the other side to pick up all three points.

Prediction: 0-0

Derby County vs Swansea City

Positions: 13th vs 18th

  • Last but not least it's Derby County and Swansea City, who meet at Pride Park tonight. Swansea are on the back of an unbeliavable six draws on the bounce, and have been steadily picking points, but they haven't won in the last eight games leaving them in the relegation zone on goal difference. They face Derby County tonight confident that they can win the game, but on paper it should be another draw for Swansea.

Prediction: 2-2

Re: English Championship 5579 -Match Report/Transfer Gossip Thread

Turn 11 tonight, and more drama is in store for us! Can Black Burn continue their dream start? Will Burnley steer themselves out of the bottom 3? Can the big guns such as Man Utd and Man City reignite their title ambitions? Turn 11

Blackburn Rovers vs Leicester City

League Positions = 1st vs 14th

Before you know it - 10 games into the season and Black Burn Rovers of all sides, are 9 nine points clear at the top of the Lennys Ben & Jerrys Premier Division! Incredible. But dont count your chickens too early. However much they look good, they could easily go on and lose a few games, then it'll be close once again. Tonight the Rovers face newly promoted Leicester who have made a steady but sured start to the season. On Wednesday we heard from Matty at Leicester. Tonight we hear from someone everyone wants to be really. A man who has his eyes on tucking in to almost a lifetimes supply of ben & jerrys ice cream - Bibi - Manager of Black Burn:

Q: You have had a blistering start here at Ewood park so far this season! Whats been the secret?

If I told you, it wouldn't be a secret anymore. Just Joking, I really think it's just right timing, we've been building a squad that can compete with the best of them over the last two seasons, Now they are showing they are ready to take the next step.

Q: I dont want to commit the classic curse of the interviewer, but can you - or do you belive you can keep this up?

I really think the best is yet to come, I think we can be even much more impressive than we are doing now.So is just about keeping up the good work.

Q: Whats the aim for this season? I guess whatever you was aiming for pre season's gone out the shop window now!!

The aim is to win the Title, from pre-season we had it in mind and that aim still continues.

Q: Whose the key player in this Black Burn squad this season?

I really don't believe in a key player, the performance has been a total team effort but If I had to call a name, our Captain Alonso has been inspirational.

Q: Tonight you take on newly promoted side Leicester and Matty. You upset the odds yet again on Wednesday night over turning a strong Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge. Can you please your home fans once again tonight?

We are going to demolish them.

Q: Finally, any last gasp words for your opposite number Matty for the game?

I respect Matty, did well with being promoted and is doing well so far in Division One. All the best to him really, Swansea Jack needs to take a leaf out of his book, I cant belive that guy is still employed at the club.

Strong and very interesting words from Bibi there. He's clearly very confident in his Blackburn side. But the most interesting point is where he claims he was aiming to WIN the title all the way through pre season. Thats confidence for you. Its certainly paying off right now though to be fair. But tonight, the pressure is on Blackburn because for a rare occasion, theyre by all bookies and odds expected to win the game. They are viewed as the team to beat now.

League Positions = 6th vs 3rd

On Sky Sports tonight theres two heavyweights of the league. Its Pompey and pre season title favirotes Liverpool going head to head. Both sides know a win is fairly crucial to their title hopes. Could one team be dealt a title knockout by losing tonight?

Tottenham Hotspur vs Birmingham City

League Positions = 2nd vs 13th

Spurs will be hurting after their midweek 2-0 loss at Goodison Park against Everton. In a normal world, thats a very tough game for Spurs, and you'd say a point there would be an achievement and a half! But theyre here fighting for the title, and looking to hunt down Blackburn. They are no less than 9 off the top spot now, and times ticking as ever. Big game tonight, must bounce back!

Wigan Athletic vs Arsenal

League Positions = 19th vs 4th

At the DW Stadium tonight Wigan host Arsenal in a big game at both ends of the league table. Wigan are finding life fairly tough, and will feel pressured by Burnleys first victory of the season in the week over West Ham. But they must remain focused and try and defy the odds by beating title challengers Arsenal.

Fulham vs Chelsea

League Positions = 17th vs 8th

A london derby at Craven Cottage as Fulham entertain Chelsea. Chelsea felt the pain of the Black Burn suprise early domination in the week. But tonight they must bounce back and look to heap misery on Scout's struggling Fulham who find themselves just outside the drop zone. Important for both teams.

Preston N.End vs Newcastle Utd

League Positions = 5th vs 10th

They last met in Season 1's Coca Cola Sponsored Championship. Tonight they meet again but in the Ben & Jerrys Premier League. Theyre both within the top half too. But Preston are playing really well right now, and are looking really at home in this league! But can Toon crash them and send them back on their ways down to earth?

Manchester City vs West Ham Utd

League Positions = 9th vs 11th

Are man City on the fightback/ Theyre now up to 9th and not so long ago they were down near the drop zone. Have they recovered now? Tonight they host a team of similar calibre, West Ham. Close but well anticipated game in store.

Burnley vs Manchester Utd

League Positions = 20th vs 15th

Lastly, weve got basement side Burnley against a rather sorry Manchester United camp. This game could interestingly enough go either way tonight, and is a big game! Burnley recorded their first win of the season in the week by overcoming the West Ham threat. Tonight they'll be feeling a lot better of themselves, but must be wary of the threat they face tonight. The defending champions of 5579. This week we caught up with Legendary Manager at Turf Moor.

Q: Youve endured a pretty tough start to the season here at Burnley lets be honest. But Wednesday night you earned your first win of the season over the Hammers. Is this the start of a good run then?

A:It could lead to a run of good form but my recent form would say differently but i think it can only get better. The start of the season was appalling, first i thought we had some hard fixtures but it was just bad football which is my main concern to put right.

Q: How much are enjoying your time at Burnley taking into consideration the good times and the bad?

A:Im loving my time at the club and hope i stay here,When i could'nt even pull out a draw i becomes frustrated.Last season overall it was a good season as we remained the Division one also was able to beat teams like Arsenal and Chelsea.

Q: What are your main goals for this season?

A:My main goals are to stay up but also to mantain and only improve my squad.

Q: How much confidence have you got in your squad of players in delivering this season?

A:I have confidence in my squad there a bunch of talented players but they've taken a knock in confidence in them selfs with the poor form but after the victory steady sailing could be in the distant future.

Q: Lots of bookies had tipped your side to struggle this season during pre season. Do you take much notice of the Bookmakers?

A:Well i do care as i would rather them have a good opinion of my club then what they do now but i have'nt really taken much notice to be honest.

Q: Finally, tonight you take on Manchester United, the defending champions of EC5579. Theyve looked edgy to say the least this season so far, but can you take advantage of this and record yourself bak to back wins?

A:I do not think i'll be trying to take advantage of there record when mine looks even worse. But i think we have got a good shot as we are at Turf Moor plus with the three points gained last match we have a boost in confidence and we will try to expose Manchester United finally coming away with the valuable three points.

Well its honesty which wins me over here. Legendary Manager is very clear his team have had a rotten start to the season, but recently theyve improved, and if they can keep improving then they have every oppotunity of survival. Tonight could be a key night.

Bolton Wanderes vs Everton

League Positions = 12th vs 7th

Sunderland vs Blackpool

League Positions = 16th vs 18th

Re: English Championship 5579 -Match Report/Transfer Gossip Thread

Division 4 Match Previews:

Hello Hello Hello EC5579'ers... Have decided that I'll have no time to do previews on Wednesdays due to having alot of other priorities like school and stuff. Anywho, 2 weeks exactly till christmas day but most importantly it's Turn 11.

Rochdale vs Notts County

19th vs 9th

Well my Exeter drew with Rochdale suprisingly on Wednesday night so could there be another shock involving Rochdale. Honestly, i think Notts County will come out victorious in this tie.

Prediction : 0:1

Carlisle vs Exeter

5th vs 6th

In my opinion, this really should be on tv but suprisingly it isn't on tv so it is one to go on iraqigoals.net to see. It's a hard one to choose but i'd be quite happy with a draw with ma Exeter.

Prediction : 2:2

Northampton vs Barnet(LIVE 20:00 PM ON ITV4)

15th vs 18th

A win for either side tonight could really move them up the league tonight with Division 4 being as tight as it is but looking at the teams Northampton have such a strong squad they should easily get them 3 points.

Prediction : 3:0

Gillingham vs Hereford(LIVE TONIGHT 20:00PM ON CHANNEL 5)

20th vs 17th

Both of these teams haven't had the best of starts to this season but tonight each side will be hoping to pick up those all important points. Tonight I think it'll be either a draw between these sides or a win for Hereford as I doubt Gillingham will come out with the 3 points.

Prediction 1:2

Crewe vs Walsall

8th vs 3rd

This tonight is a game that will definately be close.. Aaron has had quite a respectable start taking his Crewe Alexandra into the top 8 but face a strong Walsall tonight that are in great form! Unsure to decide who I think will win but just with Becky's form I predict that they'll very narrowly just beat Crewe.

Prediction 0:1

Bradford City vs Huddersfield

7th vs 1st

Another very very close game featuring tonight in this competitive division. Both teams have started well to the season but I think Huddersfield will run away with the 3 points after there suprising start to the season.

Prediction 0:3

Apologise to everyone now haven't done this before but have to finish the reviews very early into my post due to having other important priorites. Sorry to all those that haven't saw there team be featured in this turns preview...

Re: English Championship 5579 -Match Report/Transfer Gossip Thread

Derby County 1 - 2 Swansea City

28, Delgado

46, King

68, Ethrington

The Big Picture

Matthew Ethrington's first goal for Swansea turns out to be the winner to give Swansea a crucial three points at Pride Park

Swansea City have move out of the relegation zone, with a win against Derby County at Pride Park giving them three points, moving them above rivals Cardiff City and into 17th position. After what was a crucial three points, and only there second win of the season and that might have perhaps expected to move slightly above where the currently were with four point from there last two games in what were difficult matches, in the end dropped them down one position. This has been because of recent streaks of form from Watford & Sheffield United, meaning that Derby, Watford, Sheffield United, Swansea and Shrewsbury all on 12 points now with 11 games played, meaning that things are now so tight down the bottom of the divison. Only goal difference meant that Swansea were seperated from a much higher league position, as had they had a better goal difference then the other sides on 12 points they'd have been as high as 13th. But there goal difference is currently poor, with a 5-0 defeat to Coventry cursing there goal difference as they've only been able to win by the one goal when they have won this season with a lot of there points coming from draws which aren't going to improve the goal difference. This win improves there unbeaten record, equaling the record held way back 10 months ago in February, when Swansea were probably under there best under Radford as he picked up manager of the month in February. Going into the game and there were no changes from the side that picked up an impressive point at home to Hull, with the manager showing some faith in Moussa Dembele despite not playing well recentley.

Carlos Cuellar was selected from the start for Swansea, despite almost leaving the club yesterday

Early on and the two pacey strikers for Swansea were giving Derby County plenty of problems, Moussa Dembele and Gabriel Agbonlahor were quick to close down the Derby defenders who like to pass it around straight from kick off, and it resulted in Stefano Guberti booting the ball into touch as Swansea found a way to stop Derby passing the ball around very early on in the match. Then key man Joe Cole got Derby in the right direction with a shot at goal coming close to finding the net. Joe Cole is a player that Radford is certainly interested in signing, and has made enquiry's about in the past and he almost showed Swansea how good he is as he struck the ball from range and although it looked like it was going to fly into the net at the last the shot's bend took it wide of goal to the relief of Samir Handanovic who looked relieved as the ball went wide. Then Joe Cole showed where his real talent is, and that's getting good crosses in as he whipped a very dangerous ball into the box and Cesar Delgado met the ball with a strong header which powered past Samir Handanovic and into the Swansea goal for Delgado's third goal of the season. Ryan Giggs then had pops at goal twice soon after the equaliser, as the captain looked to step up to the job at a crucial time and equalise before the break. But Giggs saw a wonderfull strike punched over by Stephane Ruffier, before just two minutes later seeing another effort, this time from futher out, once against punched over the bar by Ruffier as Swansea were left to go into half-time 1-0 behind.

Cesar Delgado puts Derby infront at half-time with his third goal of the season

Radford went into half-time stating to his players how important it was that they got off to a good second half, to try and get themselves back in the game and finding an equaliser as soon as possible, to give themselves a chance at winning the game later on in the match if they had time after there equaliser. In the first chance of the second half, Ryan Giggs whipped in a corner but it wasn't one of his best, and it looked like it was going to fall straight into the arms of Stephane Ruffier but Ruffier made a hash of it as it slipped out of his arms and it fell straight to Ledley King who wont score an easier goal in his career as he got Swansea back into the game. On the hour and Swansea made a substitution, and the first substition of the match with Moussa Dembele brought off for Kevin Doyle as Doyle looked to make an impact. The game went it a bit quiet after that, with no real activity for a while but Louis Saha could have put Derby back in the lead as he found himself in space but Saha wasted the opportunity as he blasted the ball wide of the target. Gabriel Agbonlahor raced past Samba and Senna in the Derby box, and a great ball across goal left Etherington infront of a gaping goal and Etherington couldn't miss as he scored his first Swansea goal since joining the club to put Swansea infront. During the rest of the game, only one side was going to get the final goal of the match if there was to be one and that was Swansea. Derby didn't trouble late on, and it all went Swansea's way as Mikel Arteta came very close as his effort from range went just wide of the target. In the end Swansea didn't find a third goal, but it was enough for them to pick up the three points.

Matthew Ethrington celebrates his first goal for Swansea, which is enough to win the game for Swansea

The win leaves Swansea with just goal difference seperating them from 13th position, and there's very little seperating from the sides slightly above the sides locked on 12 points. But Swansea City do need to be caucious, especially when there in 17th position and just a point ahead of the 18th placed rivals Cardiff and the relegation zone. They need to make sure that they win games more often, as the wins will get them up in what is a very tight league. They face Middlesbrough at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday in what will be an interesting game. Swansea City have a possibility of beating there unbeaten run, which would extend to an eight game period, a draw would be good enough to beat the record but will Swansea go for the win or settle for a draw. A draw would certainly be a decent result against a side that is doing very well, with Middlesbrough currently in 7th position and only goal difference seperates them from 5th and 6th and being in the play-offs. But Swansea have been as good as they've been in a long time recentley, and they could possibly be looking for a better result, having managed to get the win today away to Derby and having put done well to draw to the likes of Hull City, Millwall & Aston Villa in there run of six draws on the bounce. Swansea will certainly look for the win, but if things don't go there way after the injuries of Carlos Cuellar & Ryan Giggs meaning that both players will miss the game, a point might just be satisfying for Swansea.

Cisse Joins Swans, Adding Strength To The Attack

Djibril Cisse joins in place of Kevin Doyle, to add some power to the Swansea attack

Swansea City have announced the big name signing of Djibiril Cisse to strengthen the Swansea strikeforce a lot, with the French International striker joining to the likes of Gabriel Agbonlahor, Moussa Dembele, Sylvan Ebanks Blake & Michael CHhopra but he wont be joining up with Kevin Doyle as he leaves the club as part of the deal to bring Djibril Cisse. Cisse has stayed at Panathaikos for the entire three seasons, despite interest from the likes of Sheffield United, Charlton Athletic, Tranmere Rovers and Huddersfield Town and Swansea quickly got a deal sorted to bring him into the club in plenty of time for him to gel into the squad and get to full fitness to face Middlesbrough on Wednesday in what will be his Swansea City debut. Cisse's played for the likes of Liverpool, Sunderland & Marseille and has plenty of experience. Cisse has said he was suprised not to be brought into English football for a return earlier but now he's looking to show Swansea that he's well worth being brought in to fill the boots of someone like Kevin Doyle. He has said that he's looking to make a similar sort of impact to the impact that Arouna Kone made when he came into the club back in Season 1. Cisse is a similar type of player to Kone, and he admits he was a massive fan and remains a massive fan of him, as at one stage he was just looking forward to watching Swansea played whenever they were on to see how Kone got on. He's been brought into Swansea to replace Irish forward Kevin Doyle, who's always played well for Swansea but he's never really got into great goalscoring form for Swansea. Having joined Swansea last season, as part of a deal that saw Nolan Roux leave Swansea, Doyle's only managed to play in 12 league games for Swansea with 3 goals to his name. Swansea were looking for a bigger name with perhaps better ability to replace Doyle, and Djibril Cisse is certainly that sort of player. Cisse is expected to be given a chance straight from the start against Middlesbrough, with Ryan Giggs injury picked up yesterday in there victory of Derby meaning that Cisse can slot straight into the team. The front four to play Middlesbrough is expected to be Matthew Etherington, Djibril Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor & Moussa Dembele, with Cisse likely to be the target man of the team for the game. Cisse could have perhaps been overlooked to play on Wednesday behind Sylvan Ebanks-Blake & Michael Chopra, as he wouldn't have had that much time to gel into the squad but with Swansea playing Crewe on Monday in the 2nd round of the English Shield, Ebanks-Blake & Chopra are likely to be playing the hold 90 minutes and because of this Cisse is likely to go into the game on Wednesday ith a lot more match fitness so it'll be a suprise if he doesn't start the game. Cisse is hoping that if he can get into some form, then he might be re-introduced into the French squad. Loic Remy and Theirry Henry are both failing to get regular football, at Liverpool and New York respectively so Cisse is hoping that Cardiff City and France manager Carl Spurrier might look a lot closer at the option of putting Cisse in the French squad if he can play regular football and perform well at Swansea after the move to South-Wales. Cisse's hairstyle has also been a talking point of the fans of whatever club he's been playing at, and that remains the case at Swansea as "Cisse wigs" are already being sold by the dozen in the official clubshop. Cisse's looking to do his talking on the pitch though, and not with his hair as he prepares to make his debut against Middlesbrough, and he's looking for a strong performance to kick off his Swansea career with a bang.

Cisse arrives in Cardiff Airport, with the usual unsual hair-do

Swansea Draw Cardiff Once Again In Shield 3rd Round

A David Jones brace helped Swansea to beat Crewe, helping them to another derby fixture

Swansea City yesterday managed to pick up a victory in the 2nd round of the English Shield as they managed to edge a win away at Crewe on penalties, despite Crewe playing a full first team including the likes of Robbie Keane with a second string side selected for Swansea. And as a reward, Swansea have drawn Cardiff City in the 3rd round of the competition, to add to the 1st round Cup game between the two sides earlier this year. This means that at the least Swansea and Cardiff will have met four times by the end of the season. It's a big game for Swansea, and it's all because of there strong performance last night in what was always going to be a difficult match with Crewe playing there strongest side for the fixture. Swansea were shocked when they saw the opposition team line-up, with Robbie Keane and all the Crewe usual starters in the side, when they were expecting the second string to be played. The job then got a lot harder for Swansea, as Michael Kightly shown a red card with just 5 minutes played, Kightly was shown faith by the manager in being given the captaincy in just his third game for the club, but he ended his day early on with a kick at his marker and was soon shown red as he was left to give the captains armband to Dean Whitehead, in what is likely to be his only game as captain for the Swans. Despite Michael Chopra being brought down in the box, the referee opted not to give a penalty, helping the game to half time at 0-0. Soon after though, in the second half, and David Jones found his first goal for the club to put Swansea infront as he used his skill to get past his marker and then drived the ball past the goalkeeper to find the net for the first time in a Swansea shirt. With half an hour left in the game though, Crewe levelled the scoring to put themselves back within a chance of progressing through to the 3rd round of the competition. But just a minute later though and Swansea were once again back infront, as David Jones scored his second goal of the game. Stephen Ward raced forward from left-back to a win a penalty, as he was brought down inside the box, and the referee gave a penalty almost immeadiatly. David Jones quickly stepped up to take the penalty, and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and slotted the ball into the net. With 13 minutes remaining in the game and once again Crewe equalised, to put themselves back into the game. Sofiane Feghoulli forced himself into the box and having beat Adam Matthews he managed to lash the ball past Handanovic into the goal to put Crewe in with a 50/50 shot of winning the game as it came down to penalties. Swansea scored three from there first three, with David Jones, Sylvan Ebanks Blake and Michael Chopra scoring there penalties but with Crewe missing two of there first three penalties with only Robbie Keane scoring, it meant that if Dean Whitehead scored his penalty then Swansea would win the game and progress to the third round. Whitehead stepped up, and calmly put the ball into the top hand corner and despite the goalkeeper going the right way, Whitehead's effort was unstoppable though and it guided Swansea to the 3rd round of the Shield.

After picking up an injury against Crewe, Chopra is fighting for full fitness to play against his former side

Whitehead's penalty guided Swansea to a draw against Cardiff, one of the fiercest rivalries in British football. It's quiet remarkable that the sides meet eachover again, as in all in the six competitions since the setup started, Swansea have met Cardiff in three of those, meaning that on average Swansea are likely to draw Cardiff in at least one competition a season. It's not a brilliant draw though, as although it's a great occasion and there'll be a great atmosphere, it's a game against a very difficult side without Swansea being able to play a very big club and test themselves against the very best. It's still a big occasion though, and it should bring in some good income, with the last meeting between the two sides drawing a record crowd for Swansea, that'll be hard to beat with there being very few seats empty in the last game between the two sides, but crowd wise it will be a big gate for Swansea and they will get some good income. One of the interesting sub plots to the game, is whether Michael Chopra will feature against his former side or not. Chopra would ofcourse love to feature in the game, having been a former cult hero at Cardiff and to play against Cardiff is always going to be a big occasion for him, especially whilst wearing the white of Swansea. But after picking up an injury tonight, against Crewe he's uncertain to play in the game. He's been ruled out for slightly less than two weeks, meaning that he should be ok, and he should have shoken off his injury but his fitness will still be quiet low and he wont have had the necessary training required to gel straight back into the Swansea starting line-up. But anything can happen in South Wales derbies and Chopra will be fully fighting to get into action for the game, and Radford has said that he's happy to give him some sort of action of the bench, if he isn't fully fit, and if he's fit enough to start the Radford does believe that he's good enough to play the full 90 minutes against his former club. The last time Swansea played Cardiff, in the 1st round of the Cup at the beginning of the season, Swansea had to wait untill penalties to win the game, and aslong as Cardiff don't play a fully strength squad then Swansea will feel that they need to win the game the end. They'll feel confident that they have a stronger side, and a strong enough side to win the game at the Liberty Stadium.

Jinx Inx LTD Champions League

Group Stages: Turn 6

Not long to go now until we discover who has made it through the group stages and entered the knockout round of the Champions League. Everybody bar United were defeated, with United only managing a draw against Porto. It look's likely that only one or two Eglish clubs will get through the group stages this season which isn't a brilliant show. Here's this weeks fixture's:

Group A, Milan vs Manchester United

Milan still remain top of the group with just a one point lead over United and Porto. Porto will be expected to win at Zenit so United will have to gain some points from this game if they want a strong chance of progressing to the next round of the competition.United's squad is injury free but there are some doubts as to whether French left back Evra will feature in the side as he has been made not match fit.

Prediction: FC Milan 1-0 Manchester United

Group B, Roma vs Manchester City

The chances of City getting through the group stages are now extremely slim they will need to win their last games in order to gain a small chance, starting tonight against Roma who are second in the group and looking to fly past City and challenge Villarreal to the top spot. City will struggle but they have hit form in the league so anything is possible.

Prediction: Roma 2-1 Manchester City

Group C, Bayern Leverkusen vs Liverpool

Liverpool lost last week which has confirmed they are out of the competition after another whoeful season in the Champion's League. Leverkusen aren't out just yet though as they will need a win and for Juventus to win in order to progress. The champions of the group will definatly be either Juventus or Napoli who face each other tonight.

Prediction: Bayern Leverkusen 2-0 Liverpool

Group D, Bordeaux vs Portsmouth

Portsmouth are one of the few English clubs who still stand a chance of getting past the group stages, they come up against confirmed group champion's Lyon so they will need to be at their peak tonight. They are currently level with Valencia on points but the Spanish side's goal difference is higher.

Prediction: Lyon 0-1 Portsmouth

Re: English Championship 5579 - Match Report/Transfer Thread

The seasons certainly underway now, and the league tables certainly matter at this stage in the season. There's some key battles developing at an early stage, there's five teams stuck on 12 points all looking to climb the table and get away from the relegation zone. There's also a number of sides looking to creep into second behind Reading, with plenty of teams in with a shout of that at the moment aswell.

Reading vs Queens Park Rangers

Positions: 1st vs 8th

  • One of the big games of the day occurs at the Madejski Stadium, as top of the league Reading face play-off chasers Queens Park Rangers, in what will be a tightly contested fixture.
  • But with home advantage along with generally a lot more consistancy, and a lot more of a winning ability and habit i feel that Reading have the capabilties to win the game.

Prediction: 1-0

Peterborough United vs Hull City

Positions: 2nd vs 3rd

  • This has got to be the biggest game of the day, between 2nd and 3rd as possibly two of the key promotion challengers meet as Peterborough face Hull at home in a game that will be tightly contested.
  • Peterborough might not have any major expensive players who earn big wages, but the players at the club are doing phenomenal and fully deserve to be where they are. Hull were the early pace setters but have recentley struggled for wins, and i think that they don't have enough to win the game, but i do think they will pick up a point from the game, in what i think will be an even game.

Prediction: 2-2

Shrewsbury Town vs Aston Villa LIVE ON SKYSPORTS 1 - COVERAGE STARTS AT 19:30

Positions: 15th vs 4th

  • The televised game of the night, see's Shrewsbury host Aston Villa in another David vs Goliath clash, in terms of the size of each club. But on the pitch it could well be a different matter.
  • Shrewsbury will cetainly show Aston Villa that they can match up to there standards, and although Aston Villa will push for the victory i feel the two sides will end up cancelling eachover out and the game will result in a draw.

Prediction: 0-0

Coventry City vs Crystal Palace

Positions: 4th vs 12th

  • Coventry will feel they've let themselves down in the last couple of games, as they've failed to capatalise on the bad form of Hull City as they remain behind the tigers, whilst Peterborough have managed to climb up into the automatic promotion spots above Hull. They'll look for the win tonight, but Crystal Palace are a strong side and with more form in there favour i think it could well be a crucial three points tonight in favour of Palace.

Prediction: 1-2

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Barnsley

Positions: 11th vs 6th

  • Although they haven't done aswell as they had done at the very start of the season, Barnsley have still got of to a great start to the Divison 2 season as they're currently in the play-offs. They've got a tough game today though as they travel to Molineux, there under pressure to pick up the points aswell with the sides behind them not too far behind, and although they'll look for a win i think they'll have to settle for a point.

Prediction: 1-1

Swansea City vs Middlesbrough

Positions: 17th vs 7th

  • After loosing Ryan Giggs and Carlos Cuellar to injury in mid week, Swansea's squad has been weekend for the game against Middlesbrough. But they also picked up a win from the game against Derby, and they look like there going to go into the game with a winning spirit. I think that Swansea can get the win here, with Middlesbrough pretty inconsistant, and Swansea not loosing any of there last seven.

Prediction: 1-0

Bristol City vs Millwall

Positions: 10th vs 9th

  • It's a mid table battle in the encounter between Millwall and Bristol City who are both sides who could end up at either side of the divison. Both sides aren't far off the play-off chase and a couple of back to back wins and they'll be right in the hunt, but a few defeats and there locked in the relegation zone. I think that with home advantage though, Bristol City can comfortably win the game.

Prediction: 2-0

Watford vs Sheffield United

Positions: 14th vs 13th

  • This encounter looked like a relegation clash a couple of weeks ago, with both sides in the relegation zone but some winning form for both sides and they've both rocketed up the divison. Sheffield United have come back from a worse position though, and as a result have more form recently and have picked up more points in the last few games, and with form in mind i've got to back the Blades to win the game.

Prediction: 1-2

Cardiff City vs Derby County

Positions: 16th vs 18th

  • This is a must win game for Cardiff, they know that with home advantage they must win a game after some recent poor form has slanted them to the relegation zone despite a strong start to the season. If they do pick up a win they'll push out of the relegation zone, and i think that they will do that and pick up all three points.

Prediction: 2-0

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Ipswich Town

Positions: 19th vs 20th

  • The bottom two sides meet in this encounter, with Brighton hosting Ipswich. There may just the one point between the two sides, yet Brighton are a class apart from Ipswich. Ipswich look relegation likely already, whilst Brighton are a side that should beable to push out of the mess, and a win today will certainly help them to do that.

Prediction: 3-1
