A tribute to chelsea- treble winners for season 4 wc 3652

Right from the start, it was apparent that Atletico Madrid was going to be Chelsea’s main rival for the league title. After snatching the Season 3 title away from Chelsea(who were the defending champions from season 2) by virtue of having one more win than Chelsea, Atletico started the season strong, by going 10 games unbeaten while Chelsea suffered two losses in that same period, albeit obtaining more points in the league.

Chelsea managed to defeat Atletico in their first league encounter, extending the lead that they had over the second-placed Atletico. Chelsea further consolidated their position after enjoying a 11 match unbeaten run.

However, in the closing stages of the season, Chelsea’s mettle was put to test when Ballack suffered a broken foot, ruling him out for the rest of the season. Adding on to Chelsea’s woes was the fact that Essien picked up injuries in the latter part of the campaign, meaning that he was not available in several key matches as Chelsea worked towards their first treble.

Furthermore, Obi Mikel was used as a part exchange to bring Gonzalo Higuain to Stamford Bridge. This further tested the depth of Chelsea’s midfield as injuries and suspensions usually meant that Frank Lampard was the only senior player available. As such, Hernanes, who was bought immediately after Obi Mikel’s departure, had to be deployed in the midfield.

It soon became obvious that Chelsea’s participation in both the Cup and Shield had taken its toll on the players as Chelsea often lost the match held directly after a Cup or Shield match as seen in the 2-0 defeat to Juventus after the Cup final and a 4-2 defeat to Arsenal after a semi-final in the Shield.

The team was always not match fit and squad rotation was necessary as key players were absent in parts of the season.

In the Cup Final, Chelsea was forced to use an attacking formation, 3-4-3 as they had they lacked a midfield anchor required in the manager’s favoured 3-5-2 formation. The absence of Essien was apparent, especially in the Cup Final. Chelsea had enjoyed 60% of possession when using 3-5-2, with Essien as the midfield anchor but with 3-4-3, their possession dropped to 51%.

Sensing that the team was missing Essien’s dynamic displays, Lass Diarra was brought in to fill Essien’s role. Luis Fernandinho was also bought to take some pressure off Hernanes.

Against Fiorentina in the World Champ Shield Final, 3-5-2 was used again, with Diarra as the anchor. Knowing that he had big shoes to fill, Diarra played to the best of his abilities and helped to deliver Chelsea’s second trophy of the season.

However, Chelsea’s quest for the treble was not so direct as they were stunned 2-0 by Juventus while Atletico fought to a 2-2 draw with Manchester United in the 36th round of the league. This meant that Atletico had managed to displace Chelsea off the perch of the league table by virtue of goal difference, 40 as opposed to Chelsea’s 38.

In the 37th round, Chelsea fought to a 2-2 draw with AC Milan while Roma sent Chelsea back to the top of the league table by dispatching Atletico 2-0. At this point, Chelsea led Atletico by a single point.

The final round of the season saw both Chelsea and Atletico winning their matches, 1-0 against Valencia and 2-0 against Bayern respectively. Chelsea concluded the season with 76 points against 75 points collected by Atletico
