Roberto Firmino is an 18 year old attacking midfielder who is currently playing for Figueirense. He has been known for a while as their best young promise, but has taken off in the past two months and is now one of the best promises in Brazil.

As a tall attacking midfielder somewhat reminiscent of Kaka, Firmino has already drawn attention from Europe. In fact, early in 2009 he has a trial for l'OM; and this year he has been repeatedly linked to Manchester United; all this before cracking the Figueirense starting 11.

He got his debut last season, aged only 17, in 2 Serie B sub appearances late in the season once Figueirense's position was set. It took a good 5/6 games in this season's Catarinense until we got to see him, subbing in against Metropolitano on the 31st of January. After 2 more sub apps, he finally got his first start, against Chapecoense on the 10th of February, where he won the winning penalty.

It didn't take him long to start adding goals to his playmaking skills. His first came on the 3rd of March against Brusque FC, followed by 2 goals in his next game again Joinville. He added one more in April to finish the Catarinense with 4 goals.

1st Catarinense goal: 0:30

2nd, 3rd Catarinense goals: (1st and 3rd)

4th Catarinense goal (2nd of the clip):

Roberto Firmino was on fire heading into the Brasileiro, Serie B. But alongside his new status came bigger expectations. Well, he's delivered. After two games, Firmino scored the 1-0 goal in a 1-0 win over Sao Caetano and the 2-1 goal in a 2-1 win over Portuguesa. He was the most dangerous player in both games.

Firmino is the type of player that Brazil is lacking at the moment. He's a true field general, in the mold of Kaka and Paulo Henrique Ganso. He'll not only lead the attack, but often push up and finish it. With big clubs like Manchester United and Marseille already interested, he'll be an interesting one to follow in years to come.

Vid from last year.
