GRETNA NEWS

Recent signing Dean Windass scored the only goal in last nights away win at Wrexham. This was the 5th goal Windass has scored in Gretna's last four games and he has also been man-of the-match in each of those four games. Manager Wolfcatt said considering I paid £25,000 for Dean, pound for pound he is probably the best signing I have made so far, especially considering the size of the lad.:D

DIVISION THREE

Vase_aloft_L.jpg

East Fife(12th) 2 - 4 Northwich Victoria(1st)

These games often go the way of the struggling team but Northwich avoided losing to bottom club East Fife to hold onto top spot. Mcgowen and Mitchell score for the home side with Dani scoring twice, Ince and Latapy making it four. The leaders lost Drozd late on but did enough to hold onto the lead.

Cowdenbeath(8th) 0 - 3 Alloa Athletic(2nd)

Alloa keep up the chase on the vics with a win over Cowdenbeath. All three goals were put in in the first half leaving the second to be less than exciting for the fans watching. Reid, Inoue and Can giving Alloa the win.

Sliema Wanderers(3rd) 1 - 1 Perth Glory(4th)

Cup finalists Sliema got back to league business with a draw with fellow promotion chasers Perth. Francisco Lima fired Sliema into a first half lead, which was pulled back by Perths only shot on target as Jeremy Christie scored. A draw not the best result for either side but they are both still in the chase.

Burton Albion(6th) 0 - 0 Forest Green Rovers(5th)

These sides took themselves out of the promotion chase by playing out a goalless draw at the Pirelli Stadium. MOM was Greens keeper Doyle with a mark of seven showing what a poor game this was.

Arbroath(11th) 1 - 5 Southport(7th)

Southports best ever away win came at a good time to end a run of four straight losses. Arbroath are not so fortuante and added another L to there season as they lie 11th and lose touch with 10th.

Grays Athletic(9th) 2 - 1 Rushden and Diamonds(10th)

Grays lept over Rushden in this battle of two sides who are not in danger of finishing bottom but are not likely to feature at the top of the table either. Poole and Thurgood put the home side two up. Rushden gave themselves a fighting chance with Chillingworth but Grays held on for three valuable points.

DIVISION TWO

Bristol Rovers(1st) 3 - 1 Raith Rovers(6th)

The league leaders kept there lead at the top to four points after seeing off Raith in the first half. Louis Bonnet, Karel Rada and Henrik Larsson put the home side into a comfortable half time lead. Raith gave there travelling faithfull something to shout about with on loan striker Emmanuel Adebayor netting.

Albion Rovers(2nd) 1 - 0 Sydney FC(5th)

Grant keeps up the chase of brother Paul as Albion win by a single goal against Sydney. Anthony Stokes was sent off for Sydney on 11 and the only goal of the game came from old hand Romario on 66 to earn him MOM and three points for his side.

Tamworth(9th) 1 - 0 Morecambe(3rd)

Morecambes loss opens up a gap of five points between them and Alloa. Tamworth unbeaten in three are looking a different side now they have a manager are slowly climbing the league. Despite playing an hour with ten men they snatched a win through Martinez Mario to go upto 9th.

Stirling Albion(3rd) 3 - 1 Birkirkara(12th)

Welcome aboard to Shelbourne, he is taking the ultimate challenge of trying to get Birkirkara out of trouble but things havent started well as they still await there first win. Taking the lead through new signing Issac Osbourne they were pegged back when Stirling levelled thanks to Donovan. A Luton Shelton double strike in the second half helped Stirling to victory.

Stafford Rangers(10th) 1 - 3 Adelaide United(7th)

Another new boss in charge, Teje had better luck with his Adelaide side picking up a win at Stafford. Quinns first half strike was cancelled out by Staffords Grayson in the second. The the turning point, Stafford lost Murray to a red card and within ten minutes if that happening Adelaide had killed the game off with Beinlich and Kightley scoring.

Dagenham and Redbridge(11th) 2 - 1 Exeter City(8th)

Dagenham kept there slim hopes of survival alive with a win over Exeter who's manager George will want to forget this week. Knocked out of the cup at the last four stage a league defeat didnt help to ease the pain.

DIVISION ONE

PremiershipTrophy_L.jpg

Notts County(1st) 1 - 0 Wellington Phoenix(10th)

County continue to impress at the top of the league and remain unbeaten in the league. Wellington climb out of the relegation zone despite losing and although they have a final to look forward they may go back down to D2 if they dont pick up league points. A Cristobel Jorquera goal on 11minutes settled this match.

Newcastle United Jets(9th) 1 - 1 Queensland Roar(2nd)

Kevs roar and Adams Jets couldnt be seperated as they both had to settle for a point each. David Carneys second goal of the season put the Jets into a deserved lead at the break. MOM Steve Hunt scored his first of the campaign to save a point on 61.

Aldershot(3rd) 5 - 1 Central Coast Mariners(11th)

SOP's shots gave him a welcome birthday present ending a run of five games without a win to keep hold of third place. Aldershot took a 25th minute lead as Nabil El Zhar opened his account for the season. They held the lead for two minutes when Nick Mrdja brought the Mariners back into the match. El Zhar then found the net again before a blitz of goals in the second half stopped any hope for the Mariners.

Wrexham(4th) 0 - 1 Gretna(6th)

Its not clear as too where or what happened with Wrexham manager Byrne as his side were looking good and challenging for the title. His departure has led Wrexham to a bit of a spiral with only one win in the last four. There defeat to Wolfcatts Gretna only heaped more trouble on the club who will be on the lookout for a new boss. Dean Windass scored the telling goal seperating the sides.

Torquay United(5th) 1 - 3 Crawley Town(8th)

With Gretna beating Wrexham and Crawley winning at Torquay its starting to bunch up the middle of the table nicely. Five points seperate 8th from 3rd now. Tugay and Sutton had fired Crawley into a two nil lead but Guiseppe Rossi's goal on 32 kept this game hanging in the balance. Luckily for Crawley Paul Bosvelt popped up on 51 to increase the red devils lead before Sutton was sent off. Crawley hung on though for a great victory.

Hibernians FC Paola(7th) 6 - 1 Peterborough United(12th)

Champions Hibs provided the best scoreline of the day with a thrashing of doomed Boro. Mathematically Peterborough can survive but zero points from the first twelve games makes them likely to go down. Hibs were two up at half time in this game but ripped the visitors apart in the second to give them there biggest home win ever. It wasnt all good for the home side though as they lose Craig Short for a lengthy spell.

Re: The Leamington Invitational Official Thread

Exeter City boss George has hit out as his players recent performances, saying that the players were more interested in the money than the actual game.

City started the season brightly but the past few performances have been like watching a kids game.

Poor league results, and a disappointing exit from the cup have had fans calling for George's head.

However, George replied saying ' I am doing what I can, I'm giving other players the chance but I can't find a winning XI. '

LB Billy Jones agreed saying ' George is doing a great job as manager I think, it's our ( players ) fault, I admit that my performances this season have been poor, so d many others. It's time to put in that extra effort now, we need to start winning. '

LEAMINGTON INVITATIONAL CUP FINAL PREVIEW

FACup_2_L.jpg

SLIEMA WANDERERS vs WELLINGTON PHOENIX

The second LI cup final is upon us and with last seasons winners Bristol Rovers knocked out there will be a new name on the cup. The final will be contested between Sliema Wanderers of division three managed by John Gordon and Wellington Phoenix of Division one managed by the Legend Neller.

Sliemas Wanderers road to Wembley.

Round one: Victory on penalties against Peterborough of division one.

Round two: Victory over last years finalists Notts County of division one.

Round three: Victory over Raith Rovers of division two.

Quarter Final: Another penalty shoot out win over Stirling Albion of division two.

Semi Final: Place booked in final with win over Exeter City of division two.

Johns side have beaten opponents from higher divisions to get this far and are the only team to inflict defeat on Notts County this season.

Player to watch: Dejan Petkovic

petkovic.gif

Check out Petkovic in action.

Wellington Phoenixs road to Wembley.

Round one: bye

Round two: Victory over Dagenham and Redbridge of division two.

Round three: Knock out holders Bristol Rovers on penalties.

Quarter Final: Another penalty shoot out win this time over Crawley Town of divsion one.

Semi Final: Place in final booked with win over Sydney FC of division two.

Probably an easier route to the final for Phoenix but still had to knock out the holders who are having a great season in the league.

Player to watch: Scott Carson

ScottCarson_L1.jpg

Check out Carson in action.

THE VERDICT

This game has all the makings of an upset. Sliema obviously the underdogs are on a great run of form, whereas Wellingtons only win in the last six came in the semi final of this cup.

Petkovic will be inspirational behind the strikers and on loan goalkeeper Scott Carson may be the difference keeping out Wanderers.

Good luck to both managers and for my verdict i am going for a Sliema Wanderers upset.

Re: The Leamington Invitational Official Thread

As reported earlier, Bristol Rovers beat Shelbourne's Birkirkara 3-1. Bristol Rovers manager Paul Thame has a few things to say about the match and the current state of things at the Memorial Stadium.

So... Paul, things looking good at the moment, promotion looks certain. Your thoughts?

'Well, the team are on fine form at the moment, even in the game on Sunday with Birkirkara. We did what we set out to do, which was to win at all costs. A loss would have been devastating especially with the platform we have built throughout the season. Promotion is our only hope now, we have to get promoted, otherwise the team's hard work will have been for nothing.'

Any new signings on the way to the Memorial?

'No, we have all the parts we need for the rest of the season, we have one loan possibility we are looking at, apart from that, we are in no need for new players.'

Tonight's the cup final between Sliema Wanderers and Wellington Phoenix. Last season, you were in the same position, against Notts County, with your team winning on penalties. Who would you back, and do you have any advice for the finalists?

'It's a tough call. Sliema have been the underdogs all season long in the cup. They have a good team from what I have heard, and a decent manager in the form of John Gordon. Wellington on the other hand, managed by Alan Neller Junior, have had the easier route, including knocking my team out in the third round, which critics see to be a turning point in tonight's match, knocking out the holders. My heart says Sliema, purely becuase of the underdog factor, and let's face it, everyone loves a good underdog, but Wellington in my opinion are too strong for the Maltese side. Wellington to win, but I wouldn't mind seeing either name on the cup this year. Good luck to both managers.'

Winners: Wellington Pheonix!!!

Wellington Pheonix become the second winners of the Leamington Invitational Cup after a 3-3 draw in the 90 minutes, with Wellington edging the match on penalties. Wish I could do a full report for the winners, charting their amazing cup run, but the fixtures are updating.

As for Sliema, the consolidation prizes for the whole team, memorial mugs from the final are on their way:

Re: The Leamington Invitational Official Thread

Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing... Wellington Pheonix!!!

This is it, the memorial I promised to the well worthy cup winners Wellington Pheonix!

Playing league football in the top division was always going to see a top division club go far in the cup, with last season's cup runners up Notts County proving the theory correct. Let's chart the Pheonix's cup run from the first to the last match they played in the cup, also charting all other results in the cup, leading to the final.

First off for Alan Neller Junior's Wellington Pheonix was... a bye in the first round. Other first round matches saw Exeter crush Alloa and runners up Sliema edge past Peterbrough on penalties.

Rushden & Diamonds 1 - 2 Queensland Roar

Sliema Wanderers 1(p) - 1 Peterborough Utd

Southport 3 - 4 Cowdenbeath

Alloa Athletic 0 - 5 Exeter City

Round two saw The Pheonix dump Dagenham and Redbridge out of the cup in a two-nil win. Andras Simon and Daniel Maa Boumsong scored for the Pheonix. Other second round matches saw Exeter once again crush opposition, this time in the shape of Perth Glory, holders Bristol Rovers eliminate Arbroath and Sydney FC dash the hopes of Grays Athletic.

WELLINGTON PHEONIX 2 - 0 Dagenham & Redbridge

Burton Albion 0 - 1 Hibernians FC Paola

Aldershot 4 - 1 Gretna

Perth Glory 1 - 9 Exeter City

Albion Rovers 0 - 1 Birkirkara

Sliema Wanderers 3 - 2 Notts County

Raith Rovers 4 - 2 Stafford Rangers

East Fife 2 - 0 Queensland Roar

Cowdenbeath 0 - 3 Wrexham

Northwich Victoria 2 - 0 Morecambe

Tamworth 0 - 7 Crawley Town

Arbroath 1 - 4 Bristol Rovers

Adelaide United 0 - 2 Stirling Albion

Central Coast Mariners 3 - 2 Forest Green

Newcastle United Jets 2 - 3 Torquay United

Sydney FC 9 - 0 Grays Athletic

Round three saw The Pheonix eliminate the previous cup holders Bristol Rovers after winning on penalties. Many critics saw this as a turning point in the cup. A Claudio Suarez goal for Rovers was countered by Hungarian starlet Andra Simon's equaliser. Other matches saw Sydney crush Birkirkara, Sliema edge out Raith and Northwich Victoria edge a seven goal thriller with Aldershot.

WELLINGTON PHEONIX 1(p) - 1 Bristol Rovers

Central Coast Mariners 1 - 2 Exeter City

Raith Rovers 0 - 1 Sliema Wanderers

Northwich Victoria 4 - 3 Aldershot

Crawley Town 1(p) - 1 Hibernians FC Paola

Wrexham 4 - 0 East Fife

Sydney FC 5 - 0 Birkirkara

Torquay United 1 - 1(p) Stirling Albion

The quarter finals saw The Pheonix again win on penalties, this time against surprise package Crawley Town. A Theo Walcott goal for the Pheonix was equalised by a Paul Bosvelt cracker. Other matches saw Sliema beat Stirling on penalties, Sydney win over Wrexham and Exeter knockout Northwich Victoria.

Stirling Albion 1 - 1(p) Sliema Wanderers

Sydney FC 2 - 0 Wrexham

WELLINGTON PHEONIX 1(p) - 1 Crawley Town

Exeter City 2 - 1 Northwich Victoria

The semis saw a battle of the Nellers and Junior met Senior, with Junior's Pheonix putting the nail in Senior's Sydney's coffin, giving them a 6-2 lesson in football. Two goals for Sydney from Juan Cuevas were countered by two goals from Mariano Bogliacino, another two from Ozcan Ozgurcan, a goal from Alvaro Mejia and Theo Walcott completed the rout. The other match saw Sliema eliminate Exeter.

Sydney FC 2 - 6 WELLINGTON PHEONIX

Exeter City 0 - 3 Sliema Wanderers

The final, and Sliema Wanderers awaited The Pheonix and another win on a penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 draw for a Leamington Invitational Cup final. Goals scored for Sliema were by Dejan Petkovic and a double from Ueslei were countered by goals for the Pheonix by Anderson and a double from Ozcan Ozgurcan were enough for the Pheonix.

Sliema Wanderers 3 - 3(p) Wellington Phoenix

Birkirkara See The Light?

A first league win of the season for Birkirkara arrived at ther 14th attempt, A hard Fought 3-2 Victory over Tamworth at Ta Quali in front of the hardest of hardcore "Supporters",A goal By new Signing Tamas Priskin after only 2 minutes sent the Birks crazy a little bit too crazy infact as SANTACROCE who was runnning forward to join the celebrations with his team mates he was triped by PASQUALINI, SANTAROCE Then got up & headbutted the oppenent ,A huge melay followed whice resulted in Santacroce being Dismissed,However Pasqualini was not even booked nor was any other player. This only geered up the home team & after 9 minutes Iassic Osbourne Made it 2-0 after he headed home a corner kick, (Thats 3/3 for the young Englishman & surley the big sides will be keeping an eye on him over the remaining games of the season.)Joe gamble then made it an unbelievable 3-0 after he headed home a cross from a deep posisition sending the Supporters Crazy.

However Birkirkara would again show there defensive frailties as they allowed there opponents back in to the game in the 51st Minute & then even more so 8 mins later,However the Birks were able to hang on till the fulltime whistle. There are now 11 points from safety but also with a considerbly worse goal difference.

MeanWhile Hibs recoreded a magnificent 4-3 away win @ Wellington AND Silema Won out 2-0 away at Alloa (A very Important result for them there)

MATCHDAY 14

DIVISION THREE

Vase_aloft_L.jpg

Northwich Victoria(1st) 6 - 0 Arbroath(11th)

Northwich made easy work of opponents Arbroath as they marched on towards division two. Four goals for Russell Latapy and one each for Paul Ince and Dani gave the vics there best home victory and a seven point cushion at the top.

Alloa Athletic(2nd) 0 - 2 Sliema Wanderers(3rd)

The race for second spot became more interesting as Sliemas win puts them within two points of Alloa. Sliema hoping for a quick return to division two won the game with goals from Niclas Alexandersson and Orosco Anonam and look to have recovered from there cup final misery.

Perth Glory(4th) 1 - 3 East Fife(12th)

East Fife's first victory of the season came at promotion chasing Perth. A Paul Ritchie hattrick surprised even the Fife fans as they coasted to victory at the Members Equity Stadium. Perths consolation came thanks to Naum Sekulovski.

Forest Green(5th) 1 - 0 Cowdenbeath(9th)

Two midtablers met at the Lawn with the home side keeping the points there. Lionel Ainsworths first strike of the season settled this match for Greens first win in eight games.

Rushden and Diamonds(10th) 1 - 1 Southport(6th)

Southport drop a place after being held to a draw with lowly Rushden. Both goals came in the first half with Southport going ahead on 27 thanks to Alex Smith. Nine minutes later Chris Hope levelled, with not many chances hitting the target the second half played out with not much incident.

Grays Athletic(7th) 4 - 0 Burton Albion(8th)

These sides swapped places after Grays thumped Burton at the New Rec. Two goals in each half spread the game out which was controlled by the home side. John Martin, Glen Poole and two for Jamie Slabber returned him as D3's top scorer.

MATCHDAY 14

DIVISION TWO

0,,10794~2888713,00.jpg

Bristol Rovers(1st) 1 - 4 Stirling Albion(3rd)

Stirling will be pleased with a slightly flattering result over leaders Bristol. Making sure every shot on target counted they romped to a four one victory but Rovers still look good for going upto division one. Goals from Beckford, Schmidt, Shelton and Corcoran won the game with Chiesa netting for Rovers.

Exeter City(8th) 0 - 3 Albion Rovers(2nd)

Albions win and Bristols loss closes the gap to one point at the top of the table. A game dominated by the visitors they made there possesion count with Corini, Edilson and Scholl for Albion.

Morecambe(4th) 4 -0 Stafford Rangers(10th)

Morecambe continued there chase for a second successive promotion with a comfortable win over Stafford. The aptley named Guillermo Barros Schelotto netted twice taking his tally to seven and one each for Hutwelker and Castanheira completed the scoresheet.

Raith Rovers(6th) 4 - 1 Sydney FC(5th)

Two sides bouncing around the middle of the table in division two. Raith had an electric start to the match and took a four nil lead going into the break. Goals from Scott Macdonald, Willie Gibson and two for Emmanuel Adebayor gave Sydney no chance. They hit one back in the second half thanks to Jose Calderon and it looks like another season in D2 for these two teams.

Adelaide United(7th) 2 - 0 Dagenham and Redbridge(11th)

Adelaide pulled themselves away from trouble with a win over struggling Dagenham. Pablo Luguercio bagged two but Adelaide were reduced to ten after his first, even though they pushed on and finished the job late on. Dagenham are four points behind 10th.

Birkirkara(12th) 3 - 2 Tamworth(9th)

Birkirkara finally secured a first victory of the season but did it the hard way playing 87minutes with ten men. They ended Tamworths run of four games without defeat with goals from Priskin, Osbourne and Gamble in the first half. Tamworth hit back in the second period with Mondini and Maya but time ran out and the Maltese side fans finally had something to cheer about. Could this be the beginning of a miraculous comeback or a one off.

MATCHDAY 14

DIVISION ONE

PremiershipTrophy_L.jpg

Crawley Town(8th) 0 - 1 Notts County(1st)

County kept there lead at the top of division one to six points after a single goal victory at Broadfield Stadium. County lost Reynoso on seven minutes to a straight red card but despite this Cristian Jonathas grabbed the winner on 38 for his 3rd of the season.

Gretna(6th) 3 - 6 Aldershot(2nd)

In a thoroughly entertaining game Gretna and Aldershot took part in a nine goal bonanza. Aldershots record signing Stefano Okaka Chuka scored a hattrick with Maaroufi, Mejia and El Zhar also adding to the scoreline. Gretnas goals came from Windass, Jenkins and Fellah.

Peterborough United(12th) 2 - 3 Wrexham(3rd)

D1's managerless sides battled it out at London Road. Kanyuka and Schwoch had put Wrexham into the lead at the break but with ten men they could not hold the lead. Low and Convey brought Boro level and as they headed towards there first point of the season Wrexham shot them down with the winner coming from Stevenson.

Queensland Roar(4th) 5 - 0 Central Coast Mariners(11th)

The Roars best home result didnt look like happening after the first 45minutes. At nil nil at the break no one would of thought of five goals being hammered in in the second period. Nafver and Datolo both with two each and Kissock were all on the scoresheet for the Suncorp side.

Newcastle United Jets(9th) 3 - 3 Torquay United(5th)

More goals flying in this week with six at the Energy Austrailia Stadium. The Jets took the lead on three occasions, Bendtner, Carle and Rodriguez on target but each time within minutes Torquay would level. Denilson, Bruno Game and O'Conner doing the business for them and leaving Torquay three points off second.

Wellington Phoenix(10th) 3 - 4 Hibernians FC Paola(7th)

The newly crowned cup winners returned to league action unable to capitalise on there victory. Up against the champions this was another game full of goals. Two for Fotti and one for Anderson had put Phoenix three one up at the break. Jose Enrique scoring the first of his two goals. A second half turnaround with Corrales, Benzema and Jose Enrique secured a win for the visitors.

Boom!! Boom!! Boom!! Another 1 Bites The Dust

Birkirkara fans could only be described as been in heaven as they watched there team in what you can only describe as a "SLAUGHTERING" defeat of 3rd from Bottom Tamworth in England.

Few Fans Traveled to england for this one instead opting to stay & home & watch the game at the Ta Quali Supporters Bar in The Municipal & various other bars around the City.

Things were looking up for the Birks coming into this game with yet more additions to there ever improving squad, Reports are sujesting that as much as £7-Million Was spent on Both Carlos Vela the Highly Rated Mexicano, & Sebastian Giovinco the little unknown Italian.

Birks got off to a flyer in this one as they have in most games since Shels took over the Management of the Maltese Outfit, They opened the scoring after just 2' When Captain Nick Loohuis struke home & just 2' after that BW.Philips netted again for the Birks, But Birkirkara would have to stay focussed as they have in recent games let there oppenents back into games were they were stroling,This time however they would hang on & add even more goals just 7' into the 2nd half Loohuis scored again & just 7' after that the 4th and final goal of the game was scored by Priskin the young Hungarian Striker, However Birkirkara still have a lot to do & cant really afford to slip up & would then still have to relie heavely on other teams dropping points.

Meanwhile Silema Wanderers Drew 1-1 at home & have alot to do to make a promotion place this season & Hibernians are all but garunteed Premiership Football next season after a victory over Crawley Town.

Morientes to join Glory!

Fernando Morientes and Sergej Barbarez will join Perth Glory tommorow morning for around £8,000,000 and £1,000,000. Manager Sam Wainwright claimed: "I am ecstatic that they have both chosen to join us. those two and Archie Thompson can link up brilliantly this season."

Morientes has to live up to his name if he wants a first team place after Archie Thompson is the top scorer in division 3 scoring 12 goals in 15 matches. Barbarez will be tested and if he scores regularly, Thompson will leave at the end of the season.
