Podolski puts Sunderland in the cards

1959454.jpg

Podo giving another chance to his club

On Stadium of Light with 34,000 of fans in front of them Sunderland was playing the last card for the promotion.Either a win to welcome the chances for automatic promotion or either say bye-bye to it.

The game started exactly how S'land fans wanted.Podolski scored from a sublime assist provided by Kevin Mirallas. The fans went mental after they saw that Bury was loosing and Stoke was still struggling to score.Sunderland was dominating the game and was creating chance after chance, the fans were in a great mood today untill a free kick came and Botia scored. This goal was scored from nothing after Sunderland dominated the whole half.Oh well, nothing happened. The fans continued to sing and the S'land continued to attack like a top team.Of course, with this attitude the goal came.Mata with the assist and the hero, the german horse,Lukas Podolski with the goal. The fans went mental,Raz went in middle of the fans to celebrate and everything was going like it should be.Half-Time came.Everything was good on Stadium of Light. The boys coming back on the pitch. The 2nd half was exactly like the first one,Sunderland attacking, attacking and attacking. The boys had another 3 great chances,set-up by our Idol who was almost to score another one.

It was a great game with a great atmosphere. The fans went crazy when they saw the other results aswell. It was the perfect night for Sunderland who might finally see the Premier League football. They still believe in it and we all believe in it.The players are in a great mood and everything is possible.Believe!

Thompson blast embarrassing display

simongraysonleeds.png

Bang out of form - Barnsley boss Steve Thompson has questioned his players character following defeat to Ipswich

Barnsley's title hopes appear to be vanishing rapidly as their poor form continued tonight with a heavy 5-0 away defeat to Ipswich. The result see's Thompson men remain in 4th spot but the gap has now widened to 7 points between them and Watford who currently occupy top spot.

Portman Road rose to it's feet to welcome new manager secasiu calin-mihai before the game and the new gaffer was the toast of the Stadium as his side raced into a 2-0 inside the first 15 minutes with Alex TEIXEIRA making it 1-0 on 10 minutes then a minute later Aaron RAMSEY fired a low shot past keeper Eduardo to make it 2-0.

Barnsley looked a shadow of the side from a month ago with the recent defeats clearly taking their effect on the players confidence and with 35 minutes the home side effectively ended the game as a contest making it 3-0 thanks to a second of the game from Welshman Aaron RAMSEY.

The second half continued in the same vain as the first with the visitors rarely threatening and with 50 minutes on the clock it was 4-0 thanks to Serbian attacker Adem LJAJIC who beat the helpless Eduardo with a clever flick on. The visiting support who made the long trip were heading for the exits early and it was a good job they did as the Tractor boys helped themselves to a 5th with 18 minutes remaining courtesy of debutant Benedikt HÖWEDES. FULL TIME 5-0.

After the game a clearly angry Steve Thompson fronted the waiting the media.

" I am not going to come out and try and defend that kind of performance It was a complete disgrace and i am embarrassed to have to come out and talk about it. It seems that too many players have rested on their laurels and that will change i tell you heads will have to roll for this.

We knew this would be a difficult game they have a new manager coming in all their boys are lifted and with the squad they have they should be fighting in the top 6 at the minimum but our complete lack of fight and desire was infuriating and i feel for the supporters who made the long trip they don't deserve to see that kind of inept display.

The boys will be in first thing tomorrow they don't deserve a day off with what they have given us recently we have scored just 3 times in 7 games and conceded 16 that is relegation form not promotion form and we need to act fast or our season will end is disappointment.

We have another tough fixture at home against Swansea on Wednesday and we need to see some sort of reaction to give the fans hope. I think changes are now necessary and i will work doubly hard to get back to where we were a few weeks ago"

Re: English Championship 7046 Match Report/Tranfer Gossip Thread

SMFA CUP LIVERPOOL v SPURS 2ND LEG(LAST 16)

Liverpool football club is in a much happier state than it has been in recent times, seven straight league wins have moved the club out of the drop zone up to the much more respectable position of fifth place although that good run of recent league form counts for nothing tonight in this all English last-sixteen SMFA Cup game, Spurs are a good side with pedigree in this competition after winning it the year before last, a trophy that has eluded Liverpool in this set up, they also have a good young manager in Mr.Newman.

This+Is+Anfield.jpg

Tonight Liverpool take on Tottenham for the third time in the space of eight days, we have emerged as winners both in the league and in the first away leg of this last sixteen SMFA Champions Cup match but tonight we will see a much different side for us as Rooney scorer of all four goals in the two recent 2-1 wins over Spurs is missing due to an injury sustained in the most recent Spurs game also injured in that match and missing for us tonight is Alonso, we have Robben missing through injury as well albeit not an injury sustained in matches played against Spurs.

PAIR INJURED BY SPURS IN RECENT LEAGUE MATCH, INTENTIONAL?

1139.jpg

998.jpg

We have a 2-1 lead from the away leg so we have a couple of away goals and a one goal lead, will I change formation in response to this? The answer is no, maybe a tweak or two but the formation that has served us so well in the two meetings between the sides will be used again. One thing is for certain Pepe will be replaced by younger centre back Marquinos with Papadapoulos a substitute whilst Old-Man Drogba will come in for the injured Rooney & Konoplyanka(Ukrainian Messi) will come in for the injured Alonso.

Lets hope for a good clean game this time with no injuries, break a leg Newman :).

Tykes look to get to Hull and back with the points

asamoahgyanimage2730941.jpg

Leading the line - Asamoah Gyan will be hoping to add to his 12 league goals against Hull tomorrow

Barnsley make the trip to Humberside tomorrow looking to build of their impressive draw against Swansea and further cement their place in the play off picture whilst keeping the pressure on the teams above them in the title chase.

Away from home seems to be where the problems lie for Thompson's men with no wins in their last six league away game and just three goals in those games so a much needed change in fortune is due as the Tykes look to end the season as they started and hopefully achieve that second successive promotion.

Thompson is likely to name an unchanged side from the one that achieved a point against the Swans so that means another league start for loan man Martin Montoya. The Spaniard on loan from Tottenham has found games hard to come by in league action with cup competitions his main use but the injury to left back Dennis Aogo has opened the door for Montoya who looks set for an extended run in the side at a very crucial time.

Ahead of the trip the press caught up with Barnsley manager Steve Thompson.

"The draw in midweek was a decent point although i was disappointed we couldn't hold out for all 3. We were the better side and it was encouraging considering our recent dismal displays. Our destiny is still very much in our own hands we have games against teams around us starting with Hull and we need to get back to where we once was.

Hull are going to be tough opposition despite being out of the play offs currently they know a win could see them back there and they will want to give their fans something to cheer. Our away form is very poor 13 league goals away from home is the worst in the league and that must be improved massively between now and the end of the season.

I don't envisage having to make any changes for tomorrow although Dennis Aogo is available having recovered from his injury the only thing that could change is the system"

LIVERPOOL SIGN MESSI

43536.jpg

Liverpool have signed Messi, no not the wee guy Argentinian with the mad skillz, they have signed the Kiwi Messi Marco Rojas, I am a huge admirer of this young guy who is plying his trade for Melbourne Victory well he is leaving for Europe destination unknown (Liverpool & Stuttgart are interested, Aussie sources think he is off to Bundesliga).

We are glad to sign this kid as he has a bright future, he is blessed with a bag of tricks and a sweet left peg.Going in the other direction to Northampton is young Brazilian kid Bruno Mendes, he is well regarded and we wish him all the best.

This+Is+Anfield.jpg

In other news Liverpool beat West Brom 5-0 to extend their league winning run to eight in a row which is a new club record again, up next is Arsenal who Liverpool beat 6-1 earlier in the season, Liverpool have moved up to the loft heights of 4th place a big change from the 19th slot we occupied not so long ago.

The 7046 Interviews:

Season 7’s Climax!

leathersoccerchairhattr.jpg

wozlives - Dagenham

Here we go, the first in a series of interviews with the top contenders from each of the 4 divisions. First up we have wozlives, speaking about his beloved Dagenham:

Welcome to the season 7 interviews Wozlives. Dagenham are riding high in the division, seemingly in a safe second spot. Is automatic promotion as good as assured?

I wouldn't say it's assured as I've seen teams freeze before in the final run in. Hopefully we have enough as I think this is a better squad than the one had last time we were promoted from this division.

Back in season 4 Dagenham stormed to promotion winning the league with an incredible 83 points. It’s been downhill from then though with relegation in season 5 and mid-table mediocrity ever since. What went wrong?

That was of my own making as I decided to do a little experiment and use the real life squad with catastrophic results. It's took a while to build back up and you can be certain that won't happen again.

And what has changed this season? What would you say are the reasons for the success so far?

Like I said earlier, I have totally rebuilt the squad with good players that people had put on the scrapheap really.

Dagenham%20&%20Redbridge%20FC1.jpg

Looking back you had a truly awful start to the season, losing the first 5 games played. How much is that going to cost you or do you still think you can catch the top team Swindon?

I've got to say the first few games were really shocking. I couldn't get my head around why we weren't picking up any points. Perhaps we would have been promoted by now if it wasn't for the start we had. It's only five points so you never know.

Speaking of Swindon, your main rivals are having an amazing season, having only lost 4 games all season. One of those was when you thumped them 5-2 just recently so they do seem vulnerable at times. Is there any advice for the remaining teams that have to play them?

All I can say is play your own game. I look at it that teams have to beat us soIi don't particularly prepare to stop other sides i let them worry about ourselves.I think we beat Swindon 5-1 as well this season, though I might be wrong

And lastly, as everyone knows, you are prolific on the match reporting thread with your division 4 review. What is it that spurs you on to keep it up week after week, often the only one reporting there?

I just think it keeps it interesting in the lower divisions as people don't really talk much about them. If we are promoted obviously the review will be Division 3.Thanks for the interview Jooles it's been a pleasure and good luck on the run in this season.

And thanks to you Warren for getting back to me so fast to be the first one up. Best of luck to you in the promotion push and maybe even next season in division 3 :)

The 7046 Interviews:

Season 7’s Climax!

leathersoccerchairhattr.jpg

Paleka12 – Coventry City

And now over to the Ricoh Arena where things are looking rosy for Robert Jarni’s Coventry:

Well Paleka12, you seem to be really enjoying this season at Coventry. With such a tight race do you think it’s possible to make up for last season’s disappointment of finishing just outside of the play-off spots?

Couldn't be more proud of the team. However, I did not doubt my team one bit. Last season, as I took over Coventry, they were dead bottom last, and my goal was simply to avoid relegation. The fact I just slightly missed out of promotion zone, did not bother me one bit.

It’s an incredible run you’re on, a club record of 14 games unbeaten in a row. What would you say accounts for this success and can you really keep it up?

In all honestly, when I managed Croatia, I just proposed a random tactic that would suit my squad, and went out with win the World Cup with them, beating the teams with a high caliber such as Brazil (2-0) Belgium (3-0) Netherlands (2-1) and Spain (2-0). Through this, I was able to apply a similar tactic to Coventry, leading to my current success.

Looking at your final seven fixtures it’s one difficult run-in you have, not only playing the top two teams Stoke and Bury, but also 4th, 5th and 6th placed Blackburn, Wolves and Newcastle. Would you say that run-in really counts against you or is it good to know that the future really is in your own hands?

Look these games will be our most difficult, especially as the season is closing in, with the pressure building up for automatic promotion. I will be honest with you, I don't think I will fall out of the promotion zone, however, my goal is to finish either 1st or 2nd. I will let the fate sit in my hands.

1301585380692.jpg

2nd placed Bury were the last team to beat you. Out of your rivals, who would you say you fear most and who has the best chance of grabbing one of the two automatic promotion spots?

The fact Bury have two games winning streak, and are now back in business, they are equal rivals, along with Sunderland. But I feel that Stoke and Bury both deserve promotion. They have done a excellent job this season.

With the likes of Subotic, Bender and Ganso there is some real talent at Coventry but outside of the first team is it fair to say that Coventry are perhaps a little lacking in depth? Should you make it to the top flight could this really count against you next season? How do you rate your chances should you go up?

Depth? pfft. I have survived this who year with the small team i have. Yes i did fall with two of my strikers to injury, I managed to bring in Aboubakar on loan, who scored 13 goals in 14 games for me. I am happy with my team right now, and would not like to jinx my chances haha. [/color]

And finally, you’ve spent time in most of the great forum set-ups, EC106, 5579, 7046 and 7777. How would you say they compare and what are the pros and cons of each?

EC106 was my first and most favorite championship, until all forumers left. However EC7046 has easily become my favorite setup due to the fact, there are people like you who take time out of there hand, to interview me. So i do thank you, and others who do so.

Well thanks Robbie, particularly appreciate you mentioning beating my Spain in the last World Cup final there! Well you’re doing a great job over at Coventry so best of luck for the remaining games, maybe we’ll be seeing you in division 1 next season :)

Junior Hoilett: We fear no-one now

  • Blackburn beat Division 2 leaders Stoke City at Ewood Park
  • Hoilett set up a goal in the 3-2 win

wpid-JuniorHoilett1809480c.jpg

Hoilett has surprised many with his performances this season

Blackburn Rovers' 22 year old winger Junior Hoilett spoke of his team growing confidence in their bid to bring Division 1 football to Blackburn.

"We have now beaten the best team in the division" said Hoilett. "There were on a 12 game unbeaten tear, but we played our socks off and fully deserved to pick up the 3 points".

"It was particularly pleasing for us as a team to score 3 goals, especially without Oliver Giroud. We feel that we simply haven't scored enough goals this season, but with only 7 games to go hopefully we are coming into form at the right time, to secure that playoff spot and ultimately get promoted this season".

Hoilett was signed from Aston Villa in a part of the deal that allowed Stefan Kiessling to be allowed to leave. He was not expected to make a real contribution this season and it was assumed he would spend most of the time on the bench. However, he has gone on to make 14 appearances for Rovers scoring 6 goals and making 7 assists.

Blackburn currently lie in 4th position in manager Gonzodan's first season in charge.

The 7046 Interviews:

Season 7’s Climax!

leathersoccerchairhattr.jpg

Paul Gibson – Swindon Town

What an incredible season for Swindon Paul. With just 4 defeats all season and being some 11 points ahead of 3rd placed Chesterfield Swindon seem all but assured of promotion. Would you agree or it is not yet cut and dry?

It’s not quite cut and dry yet, with 7 games to go anything’s possible, but hopefully the lads continue in their rich vein of form and see the job through, in the financial position the club is in promotion is a must.

This is your third full season with Swindon yet previously the highest you ever finished was 13th place (after an abysmal 18th place finish in season 5). How do you account for such a dramatic turnaround at the club?

The turnaround, following my first two seasons at the club, I feel it has come from stabilising the squad, reducing numbers, retaining the quality players, with no purchases coming in this season and with 5 outgoings, this has helped trim the wage bill, but with the club racking up huge debts, further sales cannot be ruled out in a bid to balance the books, although fielding daily enquiries and bids for the clubs top young stars can become tedious, but is all part of the job.

EC7046 is a forum filled set-up, unlike many of the other set-ups you’ve been in. How does it feel to be playing a human manager every week and would you say it’s any harder here than other set-ups you’ve been in? If so, why (or why not)?

I feel the human filled set up of the league is harder, more challenging and enjoyable than the usual semi filled set ups, full of 90+ chasers, players hoarders and computer managed teams with generic formations and tactics. (thanks for the introduction to this set up).

Swindon_5F00_Pro_5F00_Img5.jpg

Speaking of the forum, how come we’ve never seen you on there? We’re a friendly bunch, most of the time...

Unfortunately my lack of free time dictates the amount of time I get to spend on SM, which is mainly taken up managing my teams and tactics, and sadly rarely on the forum, I must try to make more of an effort in the future.

Outside of division 4 are there any other teams that have caught your eye or is your focus purely on the bottom tier? If so who do you most fear there?

I’ve been focusing my attentions on the job in hand and haven’t really been paying attention to the other leagues, although, this season my nemesis has been 2nd placed Dagenham and Redbridge who have inflicted two of my 4 league defeats on me, 5-1 and 5-2, I’d love to stay ahead of them until the finishing line for the title.

And lastly, with the writing on the cards and promotion all but inevitable how do you rate your chances for next season in division 3? What position would you be aiming for should you make it up?

I’m confident my promising squad of young guns, average squad age 22, eldest player 25, will be up to the challenge of the 3rd division, with names such as Perin, Jesus Juan, Verratti, Insigne, Markovic and top scorer Rudnevs who’s hit 23 in 30 games.

Well there you go, an insight from the current top dog in division 4 from outside of the forum. Here’s to an interesting battle between Swindon, Dagenham and maybe others for the coveted division 4 title. Thanks Paul and best of luck to you.

Re: English Championship 7046 Match Report/Tranfer Gossip Thread

The 7046 Interviews:

Season 7’s Climax!

leathersoccerchairhattr.jpg

bigtunna – Walsall

Straight question Tony: Does Walsall have what it takes to go up?

Without question we have the quality, now in the final run in it comes down to mental toughness and what teams handle the pressure. We were tipped as one of the favorites to go up this season and rightly so with the quality we've got but it's the first season where we have been expected to do it and thus far I think we've coped with that pressure very well but it counts for nothing if we don't finish strong and see it through til the end.

With such a tight race at the top of division 3 it seems such a shame that one club, Swansea, Walsall or Watford are set to lose out. With such a big gap between those teams and the chasing pack how do you rate the 3rd placed team’s chances of success in the playoffs?

We all know from history that the playoffs are a lottery so I don't think coming 3rd will have any real bearing on who comes out on top really, it's just whoever turns up and plays better on the day.

It’s no secret that there is great rivalry amongst the Harman brothers in 7046 and beyond. Given the incredible success Josh has had with Bournemouth in the last two seasons it must be tremendously pleasing for you and John at Watford to be showing him who’s top dog this season. Can you speak to that a bit?

Yes Josh took all the plaudits last season and rightly so after a great season with Bournemouth but Div 3 is a step up in class and I think they have found the going a little tricky at times. There's a lot of good sides in this division on paper so putting a run of results together certainly isn't easy as John will testify to at the moment, Watford were flying and they have only managed 1 win in the last 7 so the form book certainly doesn't favor them.

While on the subject, can you tell us a bit more about the Harman brothers? (are you all actually brothers or are you related in some other way?). Who is the most competitive out of the 4 of you and how did you get into SM in the first place? What about Wayne, how come he’s languishing behind in division 4?

Yes we are all brothers, no doubt Wayne is the most competitive of the lot closely followed by myself. As for getting into SM I'm pretty sure Wayne started first then slowly one by one we all joined and caught the bug. Wayne was the last to join 7046 and as you know it's not an easy setup to get in so he was happy to take any job he could to start out which is why he's down in Div 4 but he's built an exciting young team down there and they could be one to watch in the future.

And what about the future? Many say that a Harman will never be seen in 7046’s division 1. Do you one day see a Harman in division 1 and if so who is that most likely to be and how long is it going to take?

Well I can only speak for myself in saying that I'm a one club man, Walsall through and through as it's my hometown club so the dream is to take them to the very top and if we can hold our nerve for the rest of the season then were well on the way. I think we have a squad that could scrap it out in Div 2 and with 1 or 2 additions you never know maybe one day Walsall will make it to the very top.

Finally, what are your thoughts on EC7046? Is it one of the best set-ups out there and what future do you think it has?

EC7046 has been my favorite setup for a long time and little additions like this keep the GW entertaining, as for it's future I don't see anything other than it staying as one of the top setups on SM for a long time to come.

Many thanks Tony, it's been a pleasure. It looks like you still have your work cut out for you this season but it would be great to see a Harman brother flying the flag in a higher league, well deserved given all the hard work you all do down in the lower leagues.

McColl takes gamble on "Santa's little helper"

roque-santa-cruz-19-4-13.jpg?itok=40EbFr2I

Doncaster Rovers have announced the signing of Roque Santa Cruz in a straight swap deal involving Apostolos Vellios.

Many have seen Santa Cruz as a flop and failure over the last few years but McColl had this to say;

Roque has been very unlucky in his career, when he was with Bayern Munich he picked up an injury nearly every season which prevented him ever getting going, then he joined Blackburn and showed his qualities which tempted Man City to buy him which Roque looks back on and im sure he regrets the decision of ever joining. He is a fantastic player who i hope next season for us will help us in our push for promotion in my first full season in charge.

Santa Cruz himself had this to add;

I thank the gaffer for putting the faith and belief in me following my fall from fame over the past few seasons, i hope that i can help push for promotion next season with Doncaster Rovers and i am excited by the project McColl has planned for the team.

It is also believed that McColl failed in a bid to try sign 24 year old CB Thomas Heurtaux.

--------------------------------------------------

In other news with relegation a certainty i will be doing what i did at Burton Albion in EC7777 and doing a complete squad overhaul were pretty much everyone will be up for sale (with the exception of a couple) i will be only looking for full cash offers though so most likely most will end up sold externally to give me the full cash injection to rebuild for the new season and create my own squad.

The 7046 Interviews:

Season 7’s Climax!

leathersoccerchairhattr.jpg

Lenny59 – Bury

Bloody hell Neil, nosebleed time at Bury this season, currently sitting in second spot and having been top dog for much of the time. You nipping or what?

It's been a great season for Bury but I feel we are just starting to go off the boil. We have Stoke & Coventry to play yet and I just can't see us staying in the top two.

It would be a rags-to-riches story if Bury were able to make it up to the top flight, following of course in the footsteps of great success stories like Exeter, Carlisle, Huddersfield and the MK Dons. What would it mean to you to finally make it into division 1?

Without doubt it would be the best moment ever for me on SM......Nothing could beat that....Being at Bury from the start of the gameworld in division 4 to make the top flight ...Just doesn't get any better.

And would you ever remain there if you did go up?

All I'd do is look at survival each season.....Let's face it Bury will never be challenging the top 4.

With no tremendous change to key personnel at Gigg Lane this season, what would you say the key has been to Bury’s success given that previously they’ve always seemed to just fall short?

Previous seasons in division 2 we had few 89 players and no 90's.....Now we have a few of those and Remy scoring a few goals has been the main difference from the past seasons.

Bury-FC-Gigg-Lane_2872803.jpg?20121210154239

Is it true, as some suggest, that division 2 is perhaps just easier this year, perhaps the easiest it has ever been?

Well they would say that the year I'm challenging....I think its wrong to say that and is insulting to some very good managers in division 2.

And what of your main rivals, Stoke and Coventry, and the likes of Newcastle and Sunderland? Which of those has what it takes to make it up (and why) and which doesn’t (and why not)?

Coventry are hitting form at the right time and I think will finish 2nd......Stoke will take the title....I'll be in the play-offs I think.....Yes...I love to be negative.

Last up, you’ve been vocal on the 7046 thread this season about not being vocal, often bemoaning that you’ll be coming back “if things get better.” What is so bad with the 7046 discussion thread this season and what can be done to make it better? Is it really true that things were always better back in the past, or is that just the romantic notion of an auld git who’s memory is failing him? And despite all that, is EC7046 still the best in your eyes?

Nostalgia .... most of the old characters of 7046 don't seem to be around much anymore...I have been vocal that a few new managers don't seem to have much in the way of banter......Things change and I should realise that.....Plus you more than anyone know what a miserable git I can be at times....But you can't take a silly game on the internet too seriously can you ?

Nothing beats 7046....I think its the hardest gameworld I have ever hard the pleasure to be part of....

Well cheers Neil, I'll look forward to a Boro vs. Bury league match-up next season maybe? It's about time we had another grumpy auld codger to join SOP in the top flight. Best of luck in your remaining games.

The 7046 Interviews:

Season 7’s Climax!

leathersoccerchairhattr.jpg

Newman - Spurs

What a season Ben, a far cry from your (disappointing?) 5th place in season six. What accounts for your success so far this time around?

I think consistency has been key to our success this year, whereas we were on and off form all the time for the best part of last season. My aim last season was to finish in the top four and qualify for the CL, so a 5th placed finish was slightly disappointing, but lucky for us, Fulham and Manchester United, who both finished in the top four, faced off in the CL final, so we nabbed a spot for this seasons competition despite finishing where we did.

One of the low points of your season though surely has to be the recent three losses to Liverpool. What went on there, why do you think they got such the better of you?

Yes, losing in those three games was very disappointing to say the least, but every credit to Dan and his team, they deserve it and I wish them the best of luck in their remaining league games and in the latter rounds of the CL. I don't know what went on though really. I stuck by the same tactics I've used all season in all three of the games, which may have been a silly move after the first two defeats (:P), but I thought I'd have a better chance of winning than if I chose a new formation that my team wasn't familiar with.

Despite Liverpool’s superb recent form they don’t appear to have enough games left to catch you up. In fact, they are one of seven teams from 3rd to 9th just 8 to 10 points behind you. Do any of these have a chance to catch up and if so which?

You can never say never, especially not in this GW. A few slip ups from either us or 'Boro could possibly allow a few more teams to add themselves into the mix (touch wood that doesn't happen though) ;)

Looking down the divisions, are there any managers that catch your eye? Which teams would you tip for the future?

Good question. Erm, I'd definitely have to say Chris at Charlton is one to watch out for. He's done so well with Charlton this moment, who, not to be offensive, are not the strongest in the league, which is always the sign of a great manager. There are so many more to choose from, but off the top of my head I'll say Ben at Tranmere, Raz at Sunderland and Zak at Swansea, who has done exceptionally well this season may I add. Division 3 is a great place to look for top managers.

_64042029_spursfans2.jpg

Possibly one of the transfers of the season was your Ibrahimovic for Mertesacker/Khedira trade. Trading a 96-rated forward at such a crucial stage of the season would seem a risky move to many. What was your reasoning here and any regrets at all?

No, I've been trying to sell Ibrahimovic for some time and the agreement that me and Will at MK Dons came to suited me right down to the ground, as it filled all the requirements I was looking for and more with Kirrchoff added in on top. The deal gave me great depth (Mertesacker and Khedira are now also first teamers for me) and MK Dons got a 96 rated striker that is currently helping them fight for survival, so everybody won. Oh, and Van Persie has been banging in the goals for us this season, so I thought Ibrahimovic wasn't needed at the club.

And finally, you have Boro, the only other team outside of yourselves and Man Utd to win the league hot on your heels with just 7 games to go. One of those games is a tasty clash between the two sides away at the Riverside where notably you’ll be without the services of Gareth Bale. Do you think that game is make or break or is it going to go down to the wire just like last season did?

You only have to look at how many assists Bale has got this season to see how vital he's been and how much of a loss he'll be in the next few games, especially for that huge, table topping clash between us and 'Boro at The Riverside. I think he'd be a big miss for any side in the GW. With that being said, VDV is now back from suspension and will fill in Gareth's role on the LW, whilst Hiroshi Kiyotake did a great job of playing as our right winger against Exeter last time out, and in fact bagged himself a goal, so he'll definitely be hungry for more as we head into such a crucial stage of the season. I can assure you that Bale will slot right back into the team when he has served his three game ban.

It's too close to call at this moment in time, so it's too hard to judge whether or not the game at The Riverside will be a make or break for the sides involved. However, a lot can happen in the two games before then, so we'll see nearer to the time.

You’re right Ben, I don’t think it will though it’s often surprising how things could have turned out differently with those crucial games. Well thanks for the interview and best of luck for the run-in (well, not too much luck!). I really hope you don’t get many more injuries or suspensions in the next couple of games. :)

The 7046 Interviews:

Season 7’s Climax!

leathersoccerchairhattr.jpg

Steve025 - Barnsley

Hi Steve, for the longest time people on the forum have known you as Mr. Tranmere, with your prolific match-reporting season after season. Given that, how did it feel to finally achieve promotion but in 3rd place, behind first place Tranmere?

I was delighted to achieve promotion at the first attempt with Barnsley we worked hard from when I came in to make it happen and the buzz of the play off's made it all the sweeter.

Getting promoted alongside Tranmere was fantastic I came close to doing it myself whilst I was there and I know the supporters would have enjoyed it.

And how is life at Barnsley these days? That’s some squad you’re building there.

It's going well i must say. Nobody expected us to be where we are including me but now we are in the mix i really want to stay there. The squad is littered with talent and my main job has been sprinkling some experience within it. Defensively we have been one of the strongest in the whole set but H would have liked some more goals.

Our position has been largely down to our performances at Oakwell and we must continue to make it difficult for teams coming to us.

Many, including myself, have division 3 pegged as a 3-horse race. You probably disagree with that assessment, right? Does Barnsley still have a shot at automatic promotion?

I would like to think we still have a shot. We are 8 points from top spot with 7 games to play so anything could happen. The three teams above look in good nick I will admit but as you have seen with us a dodgy run of results can easily follow a good one so we have to maintain belief and make it our goal.

Tell us about the cup run Steve. Losing out in the Shield semi-final to division rivals Swansea must have been hard. And at what cost, having only won 1 out of the last 9 games?

I was proud of the cup run especially when you consider I made 10 changes for every cup game. We beat some very good teams along it was just a shame to fall before the Wembley trip but Swansea have a squad that most teams would be proud of and they have proved that by winning the shield.

I know most people will point the finger at our cup exploits for our recent poor form but I think it comes down to not doing the basics right. We have conceded far too many goals recently and training has been about tightening up and making us hard to beat again.

BarnsleyFC05-570x227.jpg

That said, you must be over the moon for Zakkoo and Swansea after their 4-0 thumping of Man Utd this last Monday. What do you make of their performance is what does this say about the ability of the lower league sides to compete with the big boys more generally?

I was made up for Zak he has done a superb job getting Swansea moving again and to beat United so comfortably says a lot about him and his ability.

It does send out a message to the big boys that we mean business and not to take us lightly. Some top managers are currently plying their trade in the lower divisions and that is only good for the set up in the future.

So aside from Barnsley, who else do you think will make it up this season? Who’s your money on to win the league and what chance that your old love Tranmere can make it two promotions in a row?

If I was a betting man and not betting on Barnsley I would back Zaks Swansea for the title the run they have been on is just superb and at the minute they don't look like slipping up. Walsall and Watford like us have been in the mix all season and they will fancy it.

Tranmere are in with a decent shout Ben has done an amazing job and if he can get a little bit of momentum going for the final stretch he has a great chance of getting in the play off group.

Last of all, what do you make of life in EC7046 on the forum these days. There certainly plenty of new blood but the match reporting thread is at times a shell of its former self. Is the future rosy in 7046 and what changes would you like to see for it to remain one of (if not the) best set-ups out there?

For me 7046 is still the premier EC on the forum it's where any manager would want to test themselves and I certainly think the future is bright for it. It would be fantastic to see a few more managers use the match report thread and get a bit more of a buzz going. I love doing them but understand time is tight for some guys.

Can't really think of many changes we have a load of people waiting to join one thing that does get brought up a lot by leaving managers is player hoarding which I understand can be frustrating but a lot of the lower league managers survive by picking up the youngsters and keeping them till they rise or longer

Well thanks Steve. While trailing the top two teams by 8 points with just 7 games to go may seem like a tall order, you could just well be the man to do it. Back-to-back promotions would be incredible but failing that best of luck in the playoffs fella and thanks once again for all the hard work you put into the 7046 match reporting thread. All the best for the rest of the season.

The 7046 Interviews:

Season 7’s Climax!

leathersoccerchairhattr.jpg

SonofPluto – Man Utd

Next up SOP in an interview that took place before yesterday’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham:

Well SOP: Season 7 Charity Shield Runners Up. Season 7 English Shield Runners Up. And now trailing by 8 points in the league. Come on, be honest with us – are United in decline?

Of course we aren't in decline, other teams have caught up to us again - last time that happened I went out and got Ozil - so watch for possible end of season activity.

You’ve had barren periods before, notably season’s 3 & 4 when you won nothing for both seasons but you stormed back to win the next two titles. Is this different though? With division 1 getting seemingly tighter and tighter could United’s title winning days be over?

The divisions always been tight and the key is not to panic, like you said I went 2 seasons without a trophy and stormed back, its how you react to setbacks that makes you a winner, not spending time worrying about them and doing nothing about them either.

Earlier on this season you commented on how the top three teams are the only ones who have won the league before. Why do you think that is and which other team could be the first to break this monopoly?

I have always said Liverpool are the team of the future and if not for their dismal start to the season the title could have been theirs this time around. Chelsea are another team who have a title winning squad but seem to do nothing season in, season out.

manchester-united-football-club-facebook-cover-timeline-banner-for-fb.jpg

Speaking of winning the league, who is your money on this season? Can United make a late charge and if not who’s your tip to top out?

Us of course until its possible to win it, I just need you and Ben to draw and have a couple of slip ups and I'm right back there with you. However I suspect the title will be going to White Heart Lane for a 2nd time.

Looking back your Rooney for Torres trade seems to be quite possibly one of the worst ever deals made in EC7046. Is this a fair comment and just what on earth were you thinking?!

The Make weight in the deal could still come good, also the season before Rooney did nothing for us, has his worst season ever and I had to change the team around as that was one of the trophyless seasons. But Torres hasn't really lit up the team either, worst deal no, I think was Tony who sold 2 players now almost 90 rated for peanuts after a rise, that has to be the worst lol.

Last question, your forum rivalry with Dom is well known to all, but has been sadly lacking this season. Even worse, Dom has suggested that this may be his last season here in 7046. All jibes aside, any response to that and what kind of loss would it be to EC7046 if Dom were to leave?

Dom is an original member of 7046, all be it he’s on about this 9th club now, he would be really missed, he’s got Fulham to a level we didn't think they would get to, and he’s always knocking on the door of the top 4. Also he is great for the banter. I would miss the young pup if he left.

Can’t agree more with you there SOP, missing his absence already, much as we are yours really. You’ve been quiet of late yourself. Well thanks for the interview and best of luck for the end of the season. Could we really see the first season next time without Man Utd in the SMFA Cup? Time will tell I guess…
