Tykes take Derby spoils

2 GOAL HERO - Andrey Arshavin bagged a brace as Barnsley beat neighbors Sheff Wednesday

Barnsley made it two wins on the bounce on Saturday as they took the spoils against Sheffield Wednesday in an entertaining South Yorkshire derby. The result lifts the Tykes to 8th in the division 3 table and a win over next opponents Derby County will see the Tykes climb into the play off places.

The match started at a blistering pace with Owls midfielder Silva Jucilei receiving a caution within the first minute to set the tone for the game and jut a minute later the home side took the lead courtesy of a close range strike from Georgian attacker Giorgi CHANTURIA 1-0. The majority of Hillsborough were now in buoyant mood but just 3 minutes later the Tykes drew level thanks to a cool run and finish from striker Andrey ARSHAVIN 1-1.

Thompson's men grew in confidence from that goal and with 13 minutes of the game they stunned the home crowed making it -2 Andrey ARSHAVIN again the scorer with a delicate flick on which deceived Fabian Giefer in the Owls goal.

Just after half time Barnsley extended their lead further thanks to Romain HAMOUMA who's daisy cutter from the edge of the penalty box flew past the beaten Giefer 1-3.

The home supporters were clearly frustrated but just a minute later their team reduced the deficit to one goal Andy POLO the man with the goal firing home from a tight angle 2-3.

The Owls fought hard trying to force an equalizer but Barnsley stood firm to see the game out and take the bragging rights back to Oakwell. FULL TIME 2-3.

Tykes manager Steve Thompson was delighted with his sides character.

"It's a superb 3 points for us and i am delighted we have given the fans the bragging rights when they return to work on Monday. It was tough out there 33,000 plus inside makes it a very intimidating place to play in and when they went 1-0 up so early you fear the worse but we showed tremendous character to get back in the game so quickly and i think that equalizer really hurt Wednesday as they couldn't build the momentum.

We took the game to them from then on and i always fancied us to go on and win the game which we did despite their rally at the end which we withstood superbly.

We have come away injury free which is always a bonus and we are very much looking forward to going back to Oakwell and putting on a good display against Derby County"

And now a word

from our sponsors…

We are pleased to announce that 7046’s season 8 English Cup and Shield will be sponsored by Boro manager Jooles and Man United boss SOP. The winner of the ‘Maple Syrup Cup’ and ‘Prickly Thistle Shield’ (Jooles being sweet and SOP being a prickly old git) will be treated by each of us respectively to a year’s gold membership or a new custom, your choice.

Of course, as you would expect, there are a few rules:

- All manager are eligible and will receive the prize PROVIDING they have made at least 5 posts on the EC7046 discussion thread during the season. This is a forum-based setup after all.

- Win the English Cup or Shield and you’ll get a GM/custom, UNLESS Man Utd or Middlesbrough have beaten your team in the other domestic cup that season, in which case your win will be deemed void! You know, just to keep it interesting.

- All new managers who join a club part-way through the season or any managers who moved clubs during the season will also be eligible, providing they meet the above rules and that their club has not been beaten by United or Boro in the other domestic competition (regardless of if they were the manager or not).

- Lastly, in the unlikely event of Dom winning the Shield then the sponsorship will be reversed and they shall be known as the Prickly Thistle Cup and Maple Syrup Shield for no other reason than to make sure that SOP does not have to shell money out for Dom, which would kill him. The ONLY way Dom can get SOP to cough up is to win both :D

Make sense? Any questions? In a nutshell, win the cup/shield, stay active on the discussion thread, and avoid getting beat by Man Utd or Boro in the other competition and we’ll buy you a GM or new custom!

So there you have it, a little something to spice up this season’s domestic competitions. Best of luck to all of you! :)

admiral_samuel_hood_1st_viscount_hood_1784_sticker-rd4f4579df5254afa8ae77bbc99e4b1b0_v9wf3_8byvr_50.jpgAdmiral Samuel Hood Writes...Barely a season after leaving for Sunderland, German frontman Lukas Podolski made a stunning return to Bramall lane as an increasingly desperate Ernest Borgnine finally found a striker to replace the recently departed Miraslav Klose. With veteran Klose enjoying a fine run of form at Wallsall, Borgnines Sheffield United have made a poor start to life in division 2 scoring just one goal and picking up one point in three outings. The lack of firepower was clearly evident this weekend when as despite creating the lions share of chances, United once more failed to hit the target before eventually losing out to a single Paulo Ganso goal in the one nil defeat at Coventry. Since Klose's departure at the start of teh season, Borgnine has been on the trail of several strikers and is believed to have tabled bids for Arsenals David Villa, Portsmouths Bafetimbi Gomis and most recently Accrington Stanleys Wilf Bony.

G.A.S.H demonstrators, Blades boss Ernest Borgnine and a smiling Podolski.

Following the breakdown of successive negotiations, and with Borgnine becoming increasingly concerned at the poor form of the unsettled Patrick Helmes, he once more resumed long standing discussions with Sunderland boss Raz Raison_d’être to explore the potential return of the former Blades star. In an extraordinary turn of events, it transpired that Raisen _d’être has long had his eyes firmly set on the return to Roker Park of young winger Antoine Griezmann, who left as one half of the initial part exchange deal between the clubs for Podolski back in March of this year. Following late night negotiations between Borgnine and Raisen _d’être, a deal was quickly struck which, along with £6.5 million sees Griezmann returning to the North East in return for the services 28 year Podolski. Whilst no doubt the United faithful will be hoping Podolskis return will provide a timely boost to the clubs fortunes, one group of Blades fans patience appears to have snapped and have taken to the streets to voice their discontent at the clubs season so far, as soccer fundamentalism once more reared its ugly head in noisy demonstration outside the clubs training ground.

A group of around 200 G.A.S.H ( Godly against soccer heresy) supporters arrived at the Shirecliffe academy shortly before 9am this morning armed with life size photographs of the recently deceased Hugh ( shark bait) Latimer and placards demanding greater adherence to biblical ball control and the introduction of hard line training methods such as fasting and flagellation. The impromptu prayer meeting lasted for best part of the day before dispersing around 2pm and whilst the atmosphere remained largely good natured, Yorkshire Police are said to be concerned at the presence within the crowd of G.A.S.H extremists (the feared psalm18) rumoured to include the notorious Shorpe based footballing firebrand Herbert Cumquat. Speaking this evening, burka wearing Blades boss Borgnine was quick to play down the demonstration as he spoke at his delight in capturing Podolski...

..whilst i have made no secret of my own deeply founded belief in soccer purity, i think its unfair on the team to label them un-Godly. And whilst we haven't started well, its a long season and i can assure you we are all working hard to achieve our goal in returning to the first division at our first attempt. Lukas's return today is a huge step forward for the club and whilst its obviously a great pity to lose young Antoine, i am certain it will prove to be a great deal for both Sunderland and Sheffield United alike.

Dynamite transfers sprout hope of safety

Marquee signing Sulejmani hopes to make an impact at Chesterfield

Chesterfield has sounded a signal of intent of staying up in Division three by signing Miraleum Sulejmani, Kevin Vogt and Alfred Duncan. In what is usually a quiet offseason, Chesterfield have revamped their side and had to fill the big holes left by the departed Dmitri Torbinsky and Hugo Rodallega.

The headline transfer for the Spireites was Miraleum Sulejmani from Division Three rivals Plymouth Argle for $5.8 million. Being considered quite a coup for the small club, the controversial forward has the reputation of separating a dressing room with his personality however is still considered one of the brightest talents in Serbian football. Known for his pace, skill and precise passing along with his versatility to play on the wing and up front, he is an ideal fit for a Glory Day’s fast paced system.

When questioned as to why he made the controversial move from fellow rivals Plymouth Argle to a “smaller club” Chesterfield

“I don’t think that Chesterfield is a small club, they have big ambitions and have a good attitude in playing football. I wasn’t happy at Plymouth and the manager understood that, so we looked for another team. I talked to ‘former Chesterfield player’ Nemanja (Matic) about joining Chesterfield and he said it would be the best place for you; the manager expects a very high level and will bring the best out of you. So for me, it wasn’t a difficult decision.”

Manager Glory Days addressed how such a big transfer could be kept under wraps

“It all happened very quickly, we realised that Miraleum was available for transfer and he was on the brink of travelling to another club but quick discussions and negotiations with Plymouth and we made a bid, then personal terms were agreed upon and we announced the signing a day later”

Promising Kevin Vogt joins a growing German contingent at Chesterfield; he arrives from German side Augsburg and was touted for a move to Division One side Exeter City however made a surprising move to the Division Three side with prospects of more playing time.

“When I was discussing contracts with Exeter and Chesterfield, the manager at Chesterfield sold the club to me and I was encouraged to come and to make his team better”

Another promising midfield prospect Alfred Duncan arrives from Walsall for $2 million and is seen as one for the future along with Diego Laxalt and Sergio Oliveria.

Manager Glory Days showed his enthusiasm at welcoming his new players to the club.

“We are delighted today to welcome our three new signings to the club which will not only strengthen our chances at staying up in Division Three but will provide a brighter future. Miraleum Sulejmani is a talented, talented player who unfortunately has a reputation of being divisive however here at Chesterfield we believe that we can get the best out of him as a player on the field and as a person in the community.

Kevin (Vogt) is a versatile young German defender who can play right fullback, centre half, defensive and central midfield. We are delighted to have him with a growing number of German players already at the club with the likes of Matthias Ostrozolek, Andres Hahn and Christopher Averor along with Mehmet Ekici who has previously played in Germany; Kevin will adjust to life here in Chesterfield.

Alfred Duncan has been touted as another promising talent; we are happy to welcome him to the club and help to continue his development into a good player.”

We can....

Gotze with his main message..."Believe"

Sunderland didn't had the best start of season but there are many games left from the season and many surprises can happen. The players enjoy their life at this club and are ready to give their soul on the pitch for this team. Most of them are still young and waiting for the succes. They're one of the best in their position even though they're very young and unexperienced.Sunderland need just a bit of experience as Raz,their manager doesn't have any Premier League experience either. The atmosphere in the training is simply amazing.A young squad with a young manager..you can't wish anything better. The fans are making a superb atmosphere and even if our form isn't the best they still come to the stadium and support us in every hard moment. We have to believe....

Re: English Championship 7046 Match Report/Tranfer Gossip Thread

photo.jpgJohn Entwhislte Writes... There were shocking events at Bramall lane tonight after widespread crowd disorder saw 45 arrests and left six Police officers requiring hospital treatment. In scenes reminiscent of the 1980's, Police barely contained rioting members of the G.A.S.H ( Godly against soccer heresy) movement as the rioting football fundamentalists disrupted the division 2 fixture between Sheffield United and Aston Villa. Before the game Police intelligence units had warned of the possibility of violence as rumours circulated that Sheffield based G.A.S.H members were planning a '' lets sweep Satan from football'' demonstration earlier in the afternoon with a massed procession of symbolic brooms. It was then predicted the members were likely to attempt to continue their protest at the game specifically targeting the visiting team at their continued use of the 3-5-2 system. Forearmed with the intelligence elite members of Sheffield constabulary’s riot squad intercepted the massed ranks of broom waving fundamentalists and after a tense, hour long stand-off managed to peacefully disarm the crowd by confiscating over 400 assorted brooms and brushes.

Sweep Satan from soccer protesters, Police struggle to contain G.A.S.H thugs, Hooligan provokes Police with offensive praying

Despite the early success Police were taking no chances and continued to maintain a highly visible presence particularly around the cities holy places, with officers stationed outside all local Churches and Christian bookshops. With the afternoon passing with no arrests, senior officers were hopeful that the threat of trouble had been contained, sadly their optimism was unfounded as unbeknown to the authorities, a large contingent of ultra puritan extremists from the G.A.SH breakaway group Psalm18, had infiltrated the home supporters and entered the ground. As the minutes ticked down to kick off there was a noticeably hostile atmosphere as sections of the ground broke out in ritual psalm singing and offensive prayer and as surprised Police and stewards raced to cordon off the Borough Road enclosure, the powder keg atmosphere within Bramall lane erupted as the chanting members of G.A.S.H reacted in fury as United not Villa, kicked off the game sporting the unmistakable shape of the 3-5-2 holding formation.

As the game got underway Police struggled to contain scores of livid Psalm18 hooligans as they surged ominously towards the pitch and despite urgent tannoy appeals for calm several missiles ( believed to be crucifixes) were seen being thrown towards Police lines and the home dugout. With the game continuing in the back ground the Police line held firm and with the arrival of reinforcements the thuggish element were pushed into one corner of the stadium where they continued to chant psalms and threats of heavenly retribution to Blades boss Ernie Borgnine. After the game Superintendent Proudsnout of Sheffield Police issued the following statement....

Sheffield Police and SMFA are this evening continuing to investigate serious scenes of spiritual violence and disorder in the Sheffield United home end at tonights division 2 fixture against Aston Villa.I would like to add that officers made 45 arrests within the ground for various public order offences and that I anticipate further arrests as our enquiries continue. I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to my officers whose bravery and professionalism whilst under constant attack and provocation, contained and ultimately prevented a serious outbreak of mindless and premeditated violence.

With the shameful violence grabbing all the headlines, the game itself saw a marked improvement from United as the switch to 3-5-2 paid dividends with a confident performance against a well organised Aston Villa. After a goalless first half littered with chances at both ends, the visitors struck the first blow shortly before the hour mark as a rampaging Phil Jagielka rammed home a close range shot after a determined Lars Bender caused havoc within the United penalty. The Midlanders hard won advantage lasted barely two minutes as incredibly United drew level with a neatly flicked header from debut boy Luckas Podolski. The point sees the Blades remain second from bottom ahead of teh weekends visit to Vicarage road to face mid table Watford.

Spireites Special: A fan’s perspective

Chesterfield 3 Swindon Town 1

Despite our bright start, the goal remains to survive relegation

Italian striker Alberto Paloschi has his best game so far this season for Chesterfield

Chesterfield registered third win of the season, second in front of the Spireites faithful. I like to give myself a day or two in order to reflect on the weekend’s events. For me personally, yesterday’s match proved as an indicator of where we are since last season but let’s be honest Swindon Town had three first team players out and it was hardly the side that won Division Four last season.

Regardless we had to play the team that was in front of us and we dominated possession but Swindon grabbed the initiative with a goal against the run of play through Dutch prospect Van Dijik in the 3rd minute. That goal could have easily allowed Chesterfield to drop their heads but to their credit, we persisted and got the equaliser through Italian hitman Alberto Paloschi in the 10th minute.

The much maligned striker often in the shadows of Hugo Rodallega last season, answered his critics with a clinical finish. Since the departure of the Rodallega, Paloschi has been relied upon to be the “main man” up front and yesterday he showed that he’s capable of it.

After the equaliser the pattern of the game was predictable, Chesterfield dominated possession yet Swindon produced chances on goal. But to our goal keeper Bravo’s credit, he kept the chances out. It wasn’t until a beautiful cross from Karim Ait Fana was met by Deny Garmash’s head that we began to take the ascendency. Another brilliant cross by Ait Fana in the 86th minute which was finished off by Paloschi sealed the game and the points for Chesterfield.

All in all, a great performance by the lads and despite the fact that Swindon didn’t have their best starting XI; we grabbed the opportunity and took the points on the day. Nine points from a possible fifteen, a brilliant start but we need to keep things in perspective, the priority is to stay up which is reflected in manager Glory Days post match interview

“Yeah it was a great result for the team, we kept possession well and carved out some nice chances but there are still things that we can improve on. But today, I was very pleased with our pattern of play and our ability to take our chances in front of goal”
“I’m happy with the start that the team has made but we need to keep things game by game and our goal is still to get the magical 40 points to keep us in Division Three”

Another point of improvement that we would need to address is our consistency. We haven’t strung two unbeaten matches as of yet this season but its early days and I believe that we are capable of getting a more consistent Chesterfield.

Newly crowned Chesterfield captain Claudio Bravo quietly inspires his team to a win

Final point I would like to make is the improved performances of Claudio Bravo since his arrival back to Chesterfield from Blackpool. Prior to his departure, Bravo would be capable of the spectacular game but then that would be few and far between but since he came back, his experience in Division 2 has put him in good stead and his appointment as captain has amplified his contribution and his influence on the team.

We have many positives to look at but we need to keep in perspective that the job isn’t done until we have guaranteed a Division 3 spot for next season.

10 men Tykes pick off Cherries

AMONGST THE GOALS - Romain Hamouma scored his 3rd goal in 6 games in his sides victory over Bournemouth

Division 3 promotion hopefuls Barnsley made it six games unbeaten on Wednesday night as they overcame the odds to defeat Bournemouth 2-1 at Oakwell. The Cherries arrived at Oakwell unbeaten in their 5 league games and sitting 2nd in the table and with 25 minutes gone their odds on victory increased when Barnsley were reduced to 10 men Ferreira MARIANO was the man heading for an early bath after he led with his elbow into a challenge.

Following the dismissal Bournemouth enjoyed a good spell of pressure but were unable to breakdown a dogged Barnsley back-line and that wastefulness came back to haunt them just after the restart when the home side took the lead through Marko ARNAUTOVIC who smashed home from just inside the area 1-0.

That goal gave Thompson's men renewed confidence and with 71 minutes on the clock they doubled their advantage courtesy of a wonderful long range strike from Frenchman Romain HAMOUMA 2-0.

The visitors were stunned into life by that goal and just 3 minutes later they reduced the arrears back to one goal Argentine forward López LISANDRO scored his 7th goal of the season with a superb diving header 2-1.

Bournemouth went all out in search of an equalizer but Barnsley showed their steel and held out to take all the points and lift themselves to 3rd in division 3. FULL TIME 2-1.

After the game a delighted Steve Thompson faced the press.

"It's a wonderful 3 points when you consider we played 3/4 of the game with 10 men. We showed tonight why we are considered a good bet for promotion with our never say die attitude and resolute defending and we need to see plenty more of that this season if we wish to stay were we are in the league.

I thought the sending off was very harsh Ferreira is an honest lad he said there was no intent and for me the referee has been to quick to get the red card but thankfully it hasn't effected the result although we now lose a key player for 3 matches.

Our attention now turns to Chesterfield this coming Saturday. They have enjoyed a decent start following their promotion and will be looking to make their place a fortress like we did last season so i am under no illusions on how tough a game it will be but if we wish to fight for promotion these are the games we need to win and the lads will be heading their full of confidence off the back of this result"

Promotion chasing Barnsley moved level on points with top of the table Northampton last night after they came out victorious in an extremely tight affair against Chesterfield with the final score finishing 2-1 to the Tykes at Proact Stadium.

Barnsley took the lead with just 10 minutes on the clock thanks to a 4th of the season from French midfielder Romain HAMOUMA 0-1 but with 33 minutes on the clock the scores were back level courtesy of Alberto PALOSCHI who fired past Eduardo from close range 1-1.

The visitors continued to have the better of the play in the 2nd period and their persistence was finally rewarded on 72 minutes when they grabbed what proved to be the winner through Russian international striker Andrey ARSHAVIN who took a touch before firing hard and low past the stranded Claudio Bravo in the Chesterfield goal 1-2.

Chesterfield searched hard for the equalizer but Barnsley showed their class to hold out and they themselves could have further added to their lead but Bravo ensured his side lost out by just the one goal. FULL TIME 1-2.

Barnsley manager Steve Thompson was full of praise for his side at the full time whistle.

"That was another fantastic away performance against a side who are very difficult to beat. So far this season our away performances have been exemplary and i really hope it continues as last season that is where we let ourselves down.

We are once again up at the top end of the table were we want to be and it's up to the lads to now keep this up and we can enjoy more good times like we did last season.

We have a cup game against Sheffield Wednesday on Monday where once again the fringe players will be given some game time then we welcome Southampton to Oakwell which is sure to be a cracker. They are just behind us in the league table and like us have their sights set on promotion"

Thompson was also quizzed on rumors that he was close to agreeing a deal to bring in another goalkeeper he said.

"I can confirm that discussions are currently ongoing with a division 1 club about the availability of a goalkeeper but at this time we are still waiting on them to get back to us with an answer. Hopefully something will progress soon"

Re: English Championship 7046 Match Report/Tranfer Gossip Thread

Transfer News and more...

Over the last couple of days Birmingham have been active in this crazy competitive transfer market trying to find some decent talent.

Due to the financial changes in SM, Birmingham are having to change their plans and look more to the future. This mean having to sell the higher rated players on higher wages and try and replace them with decent younger players who have brighter futures in a longer run.

In the last month we have brought in 5 younger players who have a good chance of having a long career at Birmingham City. All costing Birmingham a combined fee of a bout £24m plus a player.

Goalkeeper Samir UJKANI, box to box midfielder Soner AYDOGDU, attacking mid/forward Roman BEZUS, attacking midfielder Magnus EIKREM and center back Efe AMBROSE.

These additions will be joining the likes of Torres Nilo, Vida, Arribas, Zuber, Tosun, Golasa and Riviere who all all under the age of 25.

Anyone at Birmingham of the age of 30 and over will be leaving as soon as the T.Ban is over and will be replaced with players under the age of 25. This will obviously weaken Birmingham in terms of ratings for the time being but in the long run I hope these players will grow and become quality players who will eventually get us to where we want to be. Relegation this season will not bother us as we know in the long run, we will bounce back to where we belong.

Life at Birmingham as been tough since I joined the club. I could have gone the easy way about it and kept the good quality players I had here when I joined. We had the likes of Defoe, Palacios, Sanctis, Mexes and few other big names. Maybe it was a mistake in my behalf to sell them but we all make mistakes and learn from them. I'm not going to dwell on the past! This new plan is looking ahead for the future and it will take a long time for it to come good but I'm sure it will be worth the hard work and wait. I'm happy with the bunch of younger players I have here, and the few more experienced lads that I will keep to guide them. The 5 younger lads we have recently brought in have cost us a hell of a lot but this is the price we have to pay in such a competitive league, but I'm sure it will all be worth it in the end.
