Welshman suffers first defeat

Newcastle have suffered their first defeat under Welsh manager Winston after they lost 3-1 at Home to a strong Chelsea team managed by Dan Payne. Winston went on to say that he does not mind losing to one of the big teams in the League so much and thinks the players needed a little reality check after their brilliant start under him, he also said that the team were growing in confidence but maybe a little too fast.

Shevchenko gave Chelski the lead in the 30th minute and the game stayed 1-0 until 12 minutes after the break when Nobby Solano slotted home to equalize, Newcastle were then Bombarded and did well to hold out. But The Blues took the lead again through Yaya Toure and the win was sealed after Newcastle missed chances by Man of th Match Claude Makalele.

Winston said he is not making any excuses what so ever but he rested 10 first team players for the match as he is concentrating on the Cups this season and has a big 3rd Round SMFA Shield match against Vasco de Gama. The Welshman will have his first team out for the game in 2 days time and is looking forward to it.

Philp jumps ship!

Having amazingly left Dynamo Kyiv while at the top of the Eastern Europe league, Philp joined AEK Athens in the Mediterranean league hoping to challenge for the title against Benfica, Porto, Sporting, Olympiacos and also Hadjuk Split. He has already made an impact since joining....

372.gif

Firstly by taking advantage of the huge transfer fund, Philp spent just under £50,000,000 on three players to bolster the squad. Jaime Correa and also Aquivaldo Mosquera joined from Pachuca for a combined fee of £30.0m. And midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz was at th height of a bidding war before joining AEK for a fee of £17.0m, leaving over £44,000,000 in Philp's kitty for now.

They started with a 3:0 win away to Maccabi Haifa, courtesy of two goals from Hidalgo Christian and one from his strike partner Edinaldo Grafite. Philp was pleased to get his first win at the club and had this to say afterwards "the three new lads were rested and we comfortably got the three points, three goals and a clean sheet without them. Good times!"

And in the next match, Boavista were thumped 6:0 in the Olympic Stadium Athens by AEK as Edinaldo Grafite grabbed a hat-trick, with Leandro Benitez, Daniele Conti and Javier Munoz Mustafa all scoring as well, to secure the "fine win with more goals scored this time, a hattrick for Edinaldo and another clean sheet. The new boys still haven't played too"

Next up for AEK is a tie away to league leaders Olympiacos where Philp has to call on new signings Jaime Correa and Aquivaldo Mosquera with Andreas Ivanschitz unfortunately injured for the encounter. Philp knows it will be tough but insists "the form we are on, anything can happen. Yes they are top, but if we can win we will reduce their lead from us to only 2 points".

((It will be tough come tomorrow night, when this is filled to the brim))

A superb 2nd half performance by Elfsborg away to AaB as they came from behind to win 7 - 1.

Michael Jakobsen gave AaB the lead when he scored in the 29th minute, and when the sides went in at half-time it was still the 1-0 scoreline.

Pavel Pogrebnyak grabbed an equaliser for Elfsborg almost straight after the whistle blew for the 2nd half, and they were soon 3 - 1 up thanks to an Anders Svensson double.

Scott Sinclair got the 4th in the 59th minute, before Pogrebnyak thumped the ball into the top corner for his 2nd and Elfsborg's 5th.

A header from Stefan Ishizaki made it 6th in the 71th minute, leaving fans of both sides shocked.

It wasn't over yet, as Svensson completed his hat trick in the 79th minute for the final goal.

Chelsea's blistering form continues

Chelsea have continued they're great run in the premiership and are now 10 points clear of second place West Ham United.

Chelsea yesterday beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 after two goals from Fabregas and one from Shevchenko.

After 17 league games Chelsea have won 14 games drawn 2 and lost just 1 game and although they have just a 17 man squad they are proving they have the talent to win any competition.

Boss Dan Payne has set his sights on any 88+ players that are available as he attempts to spend his £109,600,000m transfer budget.

MEN AGAINST BOYS AS ZURICH PURSUE QUADRUPLE

FC Zurich last night dismantled Young Boys 7-0 to reach the final of the Central Europe Cup. As well as an upcoming semi-final of the Shield, leading their Champions Cup group and a strong second place in the Central European League, the 'impossible dream' of a full house of trophies is still a reality, even though manager Jimmy Mack counsels caution:

" The lads have worked really hard to put themselves in the position they're in but we're gonna have to put our heads down and graft even harder over the next two weeks. We still need at least a point from the last two Champions Cup games to be sure of the last 16, then there's the Shield semi on Monday and the Cup Final the Monday after that. In between that we have to navigate our way through some tricky league fixtures. Only then can we sit back and take stock of where our season is."

2nd Feb: Elfsborg 6 - 1 Brondby IF

Elfsborg got revenge for their exit to Brondby in the cup on penalties as they made it 13 goals in 2 games.

The Elfs took a 4 goal lead in the first 15 minutes, with goals from Scott Sinclair, Pavel Pogrebnyak, Samuel Holmen and Gaston Fernandez.

Bronby struck back before half time though, with Josemir Lujambio headering home in the 26th minute.

The 2nd half saw Elfsborg dominate again, Pogrebnyak adding to the total with his 2nd of the game, and Hjalte Bo Norregaard finished it all off late on.

After the game George praised his side, saying " They were fantastic and we fully deserved the win.

73% possession, 38 shots compared to their 8, 23 of those on target compared to their 1, we could of had more!

I just hope they can keep this up in games to come. "

6th Feb: Elfsborg 3 - 0 SK Brann

Another comfortable win for Elfsborg last night, but not as many goals as the previous 2 games.

Beto opened the scoring in the 1st minute, before Gaston Fernandez hit his 11th of the season.

Scott Sinclair's 2nd half goal, his 6th goal in just his 11th game for the club, made sure of the points.

Title chasing Brescia inspired with Tony`s appointment.

With an impressive season so far, Brescia were able to take it to the next level and in search of a manager found Tony, who is known for his experience in Italy.

Tony told a reporter yesterday, "With half season left, I'm hoping to establish a solid role at the club, knowing the players better and just being able to use each players skills to benefit the overall team. There's no rush to spend all the cash, I expect to spend half of it and use the rest nearer to the end of the season for further improvements."

AllardyceBarton.bmp

Well with only hours to make some transfers, already Brescia have brought in five players along with 2 on loan. Joey Barton is probably the most notable name, joining on loan from Torpedo Moskva with Panamanian striker Blas Perez.

(Ivorian International, Marco Zoro arrives back in Italy for 6.2m.)

Permanently, Kuljic arrived up front whilst in defence Marco Zoro, Cedric Varrault and former Chelsea youth Valerio Di Cesare signed. Having had two big Italian's fail to join, Brescia will surely settle for Jürgen Saumel of Austria. The 23 year old will take up the CM role after breaking the record transfer fee with 7m being spent.

Brescia ease past Treviso 4-1 for perfect start.

Over 19,000 turned up at the Mario Rigamonti stadium for Tony's first game in charge against a poor Treviso.

Tony opted to field 10 new signings and started the game with this XI -

Iraizoz 88

Varrault 87 Zoboli 84 Zoro 86 Balzaretti 87

Bowyer 87 Barton 87 Samuel 86 Sculli 85

Kuljic 87 Perez 88

Although, Treviso did start brighter after 30 minutes, Brescia clearly upped their game. Once Sanel Kuljic made it 1-0 after a scramble in the box, the Austrian began to grow in confidence and quickly got the second showing enormous pace and composure just before half-time.

(Captain, Giuseppe Sculli with the final goal for Brescia)

Quickly into the second half, the debutant completed the perfect hat-trick with a well placed header. 59 minutes into the game and Giuseppe Sculli finished off a good move and effectively ended all hope for Treviso, depsite getting a consolation through Beghetto shortly afterwards. FINAL SCORE : 4-1

Payne closer to title!

Chelsea tonight won 1-0 at home against 3rd placed Liverpool after a Pippo Inzaghi goal in the 6th minute. This means that Chelsea are still 11 points clear of second placed West Ham.

Although Chelsea are 11 points clear Payne fears for his side in the long haul. Having such a small squad he feels his squad may get not match fit and throw away their superb lead in the league.

Dan would like to ask his friends  for any loans they can offer. Obviously the better the player (Rating) the better but understands he cant be picky at these times!

Millwall News

After taking over Millwall 2 seasons ago Manager Matthew Hillman has done the unthinkable . He joined a struggling Division 3 side three quaters into the season. There where sitting 12th in the league with around 12 games to go. Matt brought in alot ofyoung players, but more importantly required the experience of ex-liverpool and Ajax player Jari Litmanen for a bargin fee of 200k.

ufnfulham122.jpg

The influential striker helped take Millwall all the way up 2 second in the league, and by the end of the season the side got promoted to division 2.

Another good purchase was on the way, demolashing the clubs most expensive transfer by 5 million pounds. Andranik Teymourian arrived just days after the start of the season for a fee of £6 million. Ramis and Dufresne followd, along with Carson on loan. Millwall where in dream land as the season started. As the season went on more players joined the den, Marchisio, Hasek and Pesce where brought in and at the half way stage Millwall where in a promising 6th position.

andranikteimourian2.jpg

The season carried on and with one game left Millwall where 4th, with Cardiff just one point ahead. Millwall had a better goal difference so if Millwall could win, and Cardiff not to win at Bolten Millwall would get promoted to Division 1, just two seasons after being in Div 4! With goals from Litmanen and Teymourian Millwall won. Then the news came in That cardiff had lost to Bolten! Millwall where promoted to the prem.

Alot has happened since then. Gera, Phillips, Koumas, Alberman have all joined the club, while Litmanen left for a fee of 2 million pounds. Millwall sit in 7th place in the league. A massive 20 points away from the relegation zone and a chance of being in europe next season. Millwall have beaten the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle and Manchester Utd and drawn against Everton, Blackburn and Arsenal. Top goal scorer Kevin Phillips lies joint 3rd in the leagues top scorers and all looks good at Millwall, will it continue?

New signings to help push Newcastle's challenge?

Since Newcastle appointed Welshman David Winston as their manager in early January they have been busy in the transfer market securing the signings of players that Winston thinks can get the club back to winning ways after a long and frustrating 40 years without a major trophy.

Winston took over a club lying in 7th place at the time and still in all three cup competitions, he made the mistake of buying cup tied players which did not help in the Cup games that were coming up, Winston and Newcastle picked up wins in the first three rounds of the SMFA Shield before Vasco De Gama knocked them out as they had no fewer than 6 Cup tied first team players at the time. They were going well in both English cups with Quarter final places reached in both, they came up against Preston last Tuesday and were knocked out of the English Cup disappointingly, Winston is not making excuses but they had a further 3 new first team players cup tied leaving only Given in goal and Taylor in defence as regular first team players playing. The Geordies have a tough tie at home to Portsmouth next Tuesday in the English Shield Quarter Final but are not expecting much with the players that they have to choose from.

Winston has made quality signings since he took over making Newcastle a real force, he hopes that the team will gel and be real title contenders next season as he will have all players available.

The signings have been as follows:

95579.jpg

Taras Mykhalyk from Dynamo Kyiv for £15 million

Martins Afonso Alves from Real Madrid in a straight swap for Ricardo Oliviera

Clemente Luis Fabiano and Ivica Dragutinovic were added in a straight swap for Michael Owen(Owen was 93 at the time and Fabiano was 90, good deal?)

Newcastle reserves reach Shield Semi Final

Winston has been wheeling and dealing all season which has taken its toll on the cup team that he has been able to field this season. Newcastle have reached the Semi Final of the English shield after the second team beat Portsmouth 2-0 tonight at St. James' Park.

The Geordies had a total of 13 Cup Tied players for the game which might well cost them a real chance of winning the competition.

Newcastle pretty much dominated the tie as the mentality that Winston installed in the players prevailed tonight as his team treated the game as a cup tie and really attacked the Pompey defense in wave after wave of attack. The first half ended surprisingly 0-0.

The Toon side came out in the second half and really looked focused on the job in hand and it did not take long to break the deadlock after the interval when Pacheco Henrique smashing the ball into the roof of the net after some good work from Jan Koller made the space for Henrique. The floodgates looked like opening from there but to the credit of Portsmouth, they did not fold and just lie down with themselves pushing for a goal. The hope of that happening was dashed pretty soon when a Henrique through ball found Alberto Luque who impressively finished to put the tie to bed.
