Portuguese Giants Clash

One of the biggest games of the season comes to a close as SL Benfica beat FC Porto by 2 goals to 0. Three players shone throughout the game and it proved to be the key Benfica needed, Miccoli, Hitzlsperger and Silvera played out of their skins and broke down the Porto defence. A costly mistake from goalkeeper Helton put the game to bed after Miccoli blasted SLB into the lead. The point takes them within two points of leaders Porto with Sporting close behind by one point. AEK Athens managed by Ross also have a shout of the league title this year.

Birmingham City 2 - 1 Newcastle United

Newcastle look destined to throw away any chance the had of qualifying for the SMFA Cup.

They are now winless in 6 League matches after tonights woeful display at St. Andrews. Winston was looking for an encouraging performance ahead of one of the biggest games in their recent history on Monday against Chelsea.

The Welshman was hoping that confidence would be high and his players would be up for the match, he will be working hard over the next few days to get them into shape.

Tonights match was pretty poor, both teams lacked a cutting instinct in the final third in a match of few chances overall. The first half ended with the score a very disappointing 0-0.

The fans were expecting much better in the second half and to be fair the match did start to liven up with Newcastle taking the lead after just 38 seconds of the second half through Robbie Keane's first goal for his new club. Winston was delighted as that is what he signed him for.

(Robbie Keane opened his Newcastle account with the first goal of the game)

Newcastle looked up for it now and pressed with little reward as Birmingham defended quite well and spoiled any chances that Newcastle did create. There was always the chance that Birmingham would nick a goal on the break and ultimately that happened when Darius Vassell scored an undeserved equalizer for Birmingham.

(Vassell scored an equalizer against the run of play)

Winston's mens heads seemed to drop after they failed to make their spell of dominance pay and they were punished for it when Jan Rosenthal's thumped shot flew in late on and gave Birmingham a lucky 2-1 win.

Derby Day Delight !

Relativly new Boca manager Friel sent a great message to the fans after recording his first win in charge after 2 draws v fierce rivals River Plate.

On loan hitman C.Vieri opened the scoring 8 minutes in only for a reply just seconds later from River Plate Falcao to make it 1 - 1.

The game looked to be heading for a draw but up stepped veteran M.Palermo to seal the win which should keep the fans off Friel's back after a uneasy start to life in Buenos Aries !

Chelsea lift English Shield!!!

150px-Chelsea_crest.png

Chelsea yesterday lifted the English shield and are now evens to win the double this season even after they're recent poor run.

Chelsea ran out with just 13 first team players due to many players being cup tied to face a Newcastle side also currently experiancing a poor run of form. Newcastle boss Dai Winston close friend of Dan Payne has guided Newcastle into a SMFA Shield place and with just 7 games to go its looking very tight as the Toon are only 1 point inside the SMFA places.

Chelsea went into the game after 3 losses in the past 5 games in the league and they're points lead cut to 12 with a possibel 21 remaining in what should be a good end to the season as Chelsea still have to play; Manchester United, Newcastle, Arsenal and Tottenham which could well be seen as games where points could be lost.

To the game, last night Payne fielding the well known 4-2-2-2 side in which he has used this season to great effect but with the absence of certain players, was forced to field Mutu in attacking midfield while Tamudo remained up front with Shevchenko. This became one of few mistakes made by Payne as both Tamudo and Mutu were probably Chelsea's worst players on the pitch but this was no matter as Chelsea's star man this season, Shevchenko put the two goals away which secured Chelsea the shield title.

shevchenko.jpg

The game started quickly and Shevchenko headed powerfully home after 2 minutes. Chelsea then continued with their pressure and Newcastle recieved 2 yellow cards before Shevchenko put away a goal mouth scramble. Shevchenko had a few more chances before half time and ended up with a yellow card out of frustration before being subbed after 60 minutes to be rested for the Wednesday game against Man Utd.

Jan Koller pulled one back after 74 minutes in which was a dull second half, which came to life when Castle centre back Fabricio Coloccini was sent off after another stupid challenge.

The game was fairly matched and could have gone either way but the talent of Shevchenko provided the difference.

Newcastle 2 - 0 Everton

Winston's Newcastle team have bounced back from the defeat in the English Cup to end their run of 8 games without a win, they have picked up a valuable 3 points in the battle for an SMFA Cup place.

Newcastle will need to take maximum points from their remaining fixtures to stand any chance of qualification.

The first of these remaining fixtures will be a chance for revenge as they play Chelsea once again and will be looking for a different scoreline to the Cup Final score.

Winston's team used a different formation tonight to try and change their recent bad run of results, it seemed to work as they looked impressive from the very start, taking the game to Everton, they were unlucky not to take the lead on several occasions with chances early on.

Newcastle took one of their chances when Clemente Luis Fabiano seized on a defensive error and rounded Tim Howard in the Everton goal to give the Toon a 1-0 lead.

Newcastle held the lead until half time ad went into the break 1-0 up.

fabiano0912076.jpg

(Brazilian Talisman scored a classy opener for the Geordies)

Newcastle kicked off in the second half and were on top of the match again, they missed chances though and were nearly payed for that as Everton got more and more into the game, creating chances of their own they should of equalized and would of if it was not for Shay Given in the Newcastle goal.

Welshman's team finished the game the stronger team as they pressed for a goal to really kill the game off and this came in the last minute when Robbie Keane cheekily lobbed Howard to make the game 2-0, thats how it finished, an impressive display from Newcastle and they should take confidence into Saturday's game at Stamford Bridge.

Elfsborg go 5 points clear!

Elfsborg moved 5 points clear of Leamington Steve's Kobenhavn last night, as the Elfs won, and Col's IFK Goteborg beat Kobenhavn for the 4th time this season.

It's now 13 games unbeaten for the league leaders, who haven't lost since the 2 - 1 defeat to Hammarby in early February. Since then, it's been 11 wins, with the two draws coming against the fellow forumers.

Despite scoring in the 2nd minute through Gaston Fernandez, and dominating possession, the game was still a close one, with OB having some good chances.

A 10 minute spell in the 2nd half made sure of the 3 points for the away side though, with goals from Stefan Ishizaki and Fernandez.

MoM went to Fernandez who has now reached 21 goals this season.

Newcastle boss was dreading this away game against Chelsea even with Chelsea's recent bad form. Winston had a full strength squad to choose from and picked the best starting 11. He was looking for his team to come out and express themselves as they look to qualify for a SMFA Cup place next season.

Re: Gold Championship 5 official match thread

Alright, I have just taken over Dinamo Zagreb and I am second from bottom in the league but I have made a few signings and my squad is looking a little better. But I am in desperate need of a left back and anyone with a rating above 87 in any other position would be appreciated. Unfortunately I only have cash as I don't really want to swap players yet because quite simply my squad isn't good enough. Any help appreciated. Cheers.

Newcastle win again

52.gifNewcastle 4 - 0 West Ham85.gif

Winston's Newcastle team have gone fourth in the Premiership and given themselves a good chance of qualifying for the SMFA Cup next season after an impressive home victory against 3rd place West Ham United.

The Welshman's team were totally in command all through the match and passed the ball around with ease, they looked confident and determined, which they had lacked in previous fixtures this season.

Newcastle were only 1-0 up at half time through a goal from Benjamin Nivet who was only playing as Jon Obi Mikel was suspended.

Newcastle were even better in the second half than they were in first, they were pressing with intent and it only took 2 minutes of the second half for Winston's team to go 2-0 up when Martins Afonso Alves netted.

Alves scored again on 70 minutes to make it 3-0 to the Toon.

Robbie Keane got a 4th for Newcastle on 86 minutes to round off an impressive victory against a club that sat in 3rd place in the Premiership.

Elfsborg secure SMFA Champions Cup place!

Elfsborg booked their place in next season's SMFA Champions Cup tonight with a 3 - 1 win away to Malmo.

Gaston Fernandez's opener had been cancelled out by Christian Jardler but late goals from Fernandez again and Cristian Bolanos made sure of the 3 points.

Elsewhere, Kobenhavn kept up the pressure with a 3 - 0 win at home to Valerenga, whilst IFK Goteborg slipped up against Helsingborgs, losing 2 - 1.

The top 4 now looks like this:

1 ELFSBORG 34 27 3 4 99 38 61 84

2 FC København 34 25 4 5 92 34 58 79

-------------------------------------------

3 IFK Göteborg 34 22 4 8 69 24 45 70

4 Hammarby 34 20 8 6 74 39 35 68

With 4 games left, there is now a 14 point difference between Elfsborg and Goteborg, meaning that they will defintely take their place in the Champs Cup next season.

Kobenhavn look likely to be the 2nd side, but the title is still up for grabs with the Swedish side currently holding the advantage.

After the game George commented on the title race and next season, saying "

It's been my dream to get the side into Europe since the start of the setup, but the first two seasons..... well they didn't go to plan and we were rubbish. But this year, the lads have been fantastic! The fact we are going to play against some of the best sides in Europe next season hasn't settled in and probably won't until the draw for the group stages in pre season.

But now we have to concentrate on the last 4 games, there's a title to win here and we want it, we have the advantage but that could work against us, the pressure is on us. Good luck to Leammy though ";)

8 goals, 8 points clear!

Elfsborg all but secured the Scandinavian title as they ripped apart AaB on Saturday night.

AaB actually took the lead in the 11th minute, as Lucas Caca took advantage of a poor clearance.

On his return to the starting line up, Rafinha got the equaliser soon after, curling in a strike from 25 yards.

A double from Samuel Holmen in the minutes leading up to half time ensured Elfsborg went into the break 3 - 1 up.

Pavel Pogrebnyak made it 4 almost straight away in the 2nd half and grabbed his 2nd on the hour mark.

He got his hat trick and 25th league goal of the season 6 minutes later as he once again headed past the keeper.

Holmen then completed his hat trick as well, with a spectacular long range shot in the 75th minute.

Cristian Bolanos finished off the scoring in the 86th minute, as he dummied the keeper and slid the ball into the net.

So with Elfsborg winning and Leammy's Kobenhavn surprisingly slipping up away to Lillestrom, the gap at the top increases to 8.
